Security company disputes Manor Secondary ‘win’ JYOTHI LALDAS LOCAL security service provider Eagle Eye Protection Services has disputed claims that a court application they filed against Stanger Manor Secondary School, after their services were terminated by the school, was “dismissed with costs in favour of the school” at the Durban High Court two weeks ago. Eagle Eye director Tushveer Maharaj

claims that while the case was dismissed there were “no costs awarded in anyone’s favour”. “The case was dismissed due to a dis pute of facts created by the school. “We brought to court an application to be reinstated as the security service provider, failing which we would claim damages for the three year contract that was terminated. “When the case was dismissed we

were advised we should go the action route in a lower court as opposed to the application route.” Maharaj said the company would be taking the matter on appeal due to material inconsistencies. “Furthermore, I was in court and there were no findings by the judge present during our appearance. The judge immedi ately dismissed the case so he did not find that Eagle Eye misrepresented itself

in tender documents.” MMaharaj also contended that they did try to amicably resolve the issue at the school. “Failing which we exercised our demo cratic right by going to court.” Maharaj says that school governing body chairperson Balan Naidoo acted “unilaterally” in defending the matter. “We believe he was not mandated to do so by the full school governing body.”

Theschool’sattorney, NarrinePerumal, said the advocate for the school Adrian Collingwood, who was present in court, confirmed that the matter was dismissed with cost. “This is what we know and fur ther than that Eagle Eye is free to pursue any avenue they see fit. We do not want to start a newspaper war,” said Perumal.

NC provincial secretary, Sihle Zikalala and MP Maggie Govender attended an unmediated ICW (Indians, colureds, whites) forum at the KwaDukuza Town Hall on Thursday night. The ICW committee included ANC regional chairman Thokozani Msweli, secretary Muzi Sithole, KwaDukuza mayor, Ricardo Mthembu as well as ICW committee members Jeff Kannie, Paul David, Roy Naicker and Riaz Meer. Addressing the large crowd, Zikalala said it is believed that the ANC started as an organisation for black people and that it still is. “This is wrong. It is the principle of the ANC that each of our leaders in each epoch worked to bring freedom and equality for Indians, whites, coloureds and Africans. Since 1994 what has happened? “We do not have freedom in totality because today we have moved from the struggle of resistance against the apartheid government to the struggle for equality.” He said each community seems to “care about their own things”. “Indians, whites and coloureds believe 1994 was largely for the black people. “Minority groups find that they do not have much in common with the ANC because they see us as a black organisation. “It is true that the ANC is predominantly black but we have had contributions en mass from all people in South Africa and we work for all people.” Zikalala also spoke about dividing factors such as economic orientation, transformation agenda such as affirmative action, service delivery and factionalism. He said these factor will have to be addressed to create social cohesion in the country. Speaking about the ICW forum, he said it comes as an expression of non racialism – a fundamental of the ANC. “We want to elicit participation and contributions from the Indian, white and coloured communities in the ANC structures. “I admit that there is a high level of factionalism. Election of leadership is based not on the calibre of the person and the work they can do but rather on the amount of support they bring in. “Indians, whites and coloureds are left out not because they do not deserve positions but becausetheyarenotbringinginsupportersfor factionalism.” North Coast KwaDukuza Ratepayers’ AssociationSecretaryFrankduToitsaidtheprovincial secretary did all the talking at the event. “The ‘Indian, white, coloured’ community had to listen instead of the ANC listening. “That left little time for the community to raise concerns. You have to ask yourselves, are they genuinely interested in our concerns or was it just another vote catching exercise

like the “domestic workers” meeting recently at the Townsend Park Hall. It is the season,” he said.

Teenager killed in foiled robbery MERVYN KRISHNA KWADUKUZA police are investigating a case of murder, attempted murder and house robbery after a teenager was killed on Saturday in Charlottdale, near Groutville. Acocrding to a police source, at about 9:30pm a family was sitting inside their home when they heard a knock at the door. “Suddenly three armed gunmen barged into the house. “One of the children at the house managed to run outside in the ensuing chaos. The rest of the family was then robbed of a cellphone and cash. “A scuffle then ensued and the family members

managed to push the suspects out of the house and barricade the door. “The suspects tried to regain entry into the house through the door and windows, but failed.” The source said the family then heard gunshots after which the suspects fled. “Outside the family discovered that the child who had earlier managed to get out of the house had been shot and killed. “Another person in a house nearby was also injured in the crossfire. The child has been identified as 14-year-old Senzeni Derrick Mdakane.” The injured man is recovering in Stanger Hospital. No arrests have been made.

HE arrest of five men intent on robbing a business in Hulett Street on Friday morning reflected police precision, KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu said. The suspected armed robbers were arrested by the KwaDukuza Cluster Team lead by cluster commander Brigadier Derek Captain-Hastibeer on Friday after Hastibeer received a tip-off that the men were planning to rob a busy store in the CBD. The KwaDukuza Cluster Team together with members from the National Intervention Unit arrested the suspects as they pulled off at a petrol station in Hulett Street. The Toyota Corolla they were travelling in was reported stolen in Durban. Three firearms, including a police issue firearm, were found in their possession. According to Hastibeer, this is the second armed robbery syndicate bust in the space of three weeks. “However, the robberies are not going to stop. There will definitely be another syndicate coming into our area. We will not stop arresting these hardcore criminals. If you have any information on any criminal elements in your area, do not hesitate to contact the police.” The men, aged between 20 and 30, have been positively linked to more than 10 cases of armed robbery, murder and attempted murder. Ntando Zulu, Siyabonga Ngcobo and Thabiso Mchunu appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on charges of armed robbery, house-breaking and possession of unlicensed firearms. They were not asked to plead. The trio were remanded in custody and more arrests are expected. The remaining two suspects are yet to appear. Mthembu said through their different policing expertise, the KwaDukuza Cluster Team, spearheaded by Brigadier Hastibeer were able to succeed. “It should also be emphasised that the officers were faced with suspects who were determined to rob and in the process would not have hesitated to kill our officers or even innocent civilians.”

Man in court for theft of copper cables MERVYN KRISHNA THE KwaDukuza SAPS arrested a 31year-old man for possession of stolen copper cables last week. Police were investigating allegations of copper cable theft which led them to a homestead at Doringkop. Theyswooped on the homestead and searched all the dwellings. Members found 20kg of copper cables in one of the rooms. The suspect has been charged for possession of stolen property and is due to appear at KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court this week. KwaDukuza SAPS liaison officer, constable Sibusiso Khumalo praised the officers for the sterling work and determination in arresting the suspect. “We urge the community to continue working hand in hand with the police in order to win this battle of copper cable theft in our province.”

INDELANI residents are breathing a little easier after the arrest of a wanted house burglary suspect on Wednesday last week. The director of Inkunzi Ebomvu VIP Protection, a private security company that operates in Lindelani, apprehended the 19 year-old suspect. Speaking to the Weekly after catching the man, Wiseman Mngoma said he was happy that through informers the suspect was apprehended, however, his ‘partner in crime’ managed to escape. “We found the suspect hiding at one of the houses in Lindelani after one of the residents reported that their home had been burgled. “The KwaDukuza Correctional Services centre was also looking for him because he ‘ran away’ when they caught him the first time. This guy is a very fast runner.” Mngoma said his company would continue to work with government forces such as Crime Prevention Unit and Correctional Services to fight crime in iLembe. “We want to ensure that Lindelani and other areas in iLembe remain a crime-free zone. “We ask that the community works with us.” He said this is the third suspect they have apprehended. KwaDukuza SAPS media liaison officer, constable Sbusiso Khumalo, commended Inkunzi Ebomvu VIP Protection on a job well done. “If the community can work with the police and security companies, many criminals will be placed behind bars,” said Khumalo.

All roads leading to the township were blocked with burning tyres and WEEKLY trees, stranding pupils as well.

Protesters believe they did ‘the right thing’

Resident Thabo Motaung (25) said: “Taxi fares went up by more than R2, but they vehicles are not roadworthy. Sometimes we have to walk to the main road because they refuse to drive on gravel roads. “We are angry because we tried to talk to them about the increase but they said they didn’t care whether we board the taxis or not. We want buses. We are tired of being taken advantage

of.” Residents believe they were doing the right thing even though they missed work. Commuter Thulane Tsele said: “If they want to raise fares, they have to put roadworthy taxis on the roads.”

KwaDukuza SAPS liaison officer, Sibusiso Khumalo said they were there to monitor traffic and give people alternative routes and to control the situation. “The residents blocked the roads but they were not fighting with any-

one.” At the moment the community has stopped protesting however, they have no transportation. The KwaDukuza Taxi Association was not available for comment at the time of going to press.

LASSES could not continue as normal for Ukukhanyakwezwe High School pupils inMaphumulo afterpupilsfromdifferent tribal authorities were involved in a stick fight on Monday last week. Pupils who feared for their lives rushed home during the stick fight while teachers allegedly hid in offices. KZN Department of Education (DOE)medialiaisonofficer,MuziMahlambi who is ‘hopeful’ that the matric pupils will do well in their final exams, said this was not only a DOE issue as the fights also affected all the community members. “The faction fights have affected the whole society. “The pupils who are in matric however, have been meeting to study for

their exams regardless of this situation.” Mahlambi said the department met with the community members and the Induna on Friday who instructed the pupils to return to school on Monday this week. Mahlambi said the school always maintainsan80percent or abovepass rate each year and is confident that they will do the same this year. “All schools completed the syllabus by 31 August and they have been revising the whole time.” Exams will resume on 28 October he said. According to school principal, Lenard Khuzwayo the fights began at a community event ‘umemulo’ and boysfromdifferenttribalauthoritiesin the area were involved. “The fight continued at school on

Monday and pupils who feared for their lives were forced to return home. From Tuesday onwards the pupils did not return to school.” Khuzwayo said Department of Transport, Safety and Liasion MEC Willies Mchunu would address the pupils and community members this week. Maphumulo SAPS media liasion officer lieutenant G Mchunu said there have been faction fights in the area before which all started during community events and then went to various schools. “As the police we stopped these fightswhichenduptakingplaceduring class time and Ukukhanyakwezwe is currently the only school facing such a problem.” Mchunu said the police arrested a few pupils last week.

A historic contribution made to Luthuli Museum WEEKLY REPORTER

A

N exercise book containing handwritten notes penned by Africa’s first Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Chief Albert Luthuli, was officiallydonatedtotheLuthuliMuseum by Pam Didcott, wife of former Constitutional Court Judge John Didcott recently. The discovery of the notebook was made by Didcott shortly after her husband - a founding member of the Liberal Party and Chancellor of Durban Westville university - died in 1998. The book remained in her possession ever since as a treasured me-

mento. Entitled ‘My Outlook’ and dated 20 June 1957 and signed, the original Tudor exercise book contains handwritten notes by Luthuli on a number of topics such as the ‘Spirit of Service to Humanity’ and ‘Why I Champion the Cause of Freedom’. It documents his education, his membership and participation in other societies, his banning orders and notes around his deposition as a member of the Native Representatives Council. It contains rare insight of the influence of the church and Christianity in various areas of the life of Luthuli.

“I did not want to let it go, but after Dr Reddy convinced me and having visited the museum, I know I am doing the right thing. “I am sure it will be looked after and preserved for many more years to come,” said Didcott. She was accompanied by her friendsDrJairamReddy, chairperson of the council of the Durban University of Technology, and Betty Govinden, a retired lecturer from the former University of Durban Westville. “We are very excited about this donation and wish to use the opportunitytocallonothermembersofthepublic who directly or indirectly knew or

haddealingswithChiefAlbertLuthuli toconsiderhandingoversuchhistorical or official documents or photographs or objects that are linked to Chief Luthuli for safekeeping at the museum,” said Luthuli Museum Director Brian Xaba. “Further research of the book and its contents will take place for future historical reference. A copy of it will be placed on our digital online catalogue that is linked to our website. “This will enable academics and researchers from all over the world access to a document that otherwise would have remained hidden away,” he said.

Dr Reddy also handed over five black and white photographs. The photographs record an occasion in 1993 when he - accompanied by former Chief Justice Pius Langa, United Nations Head of the antiApartheid movement Enuga ‘ES’ Reddy and former Durban Municipal Manager Michael Sutcliffe and others - handed over a taped audio copy of Chief Albert Luthuli’s Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech to Mrs Nokukhanya Luthuli, affectionately known as ‘MaBhengu’. They could indicate the first time that Mrs Luthuli had heard the historicspeechmadeinOslo,Norway1961.

I was astounded when I readanarticle about an 80yearold man who goes skydiving or something equally daring for his birthday. To us it seems amazing, but that man didn't just wake up one morning and de cide to jump out of a plane. We can be sure that he has been stretching himself and trying new things his whole life.

Oftentimes, people stay where they are in life simply because of fear! But do you know that fear, isn't reality? It's only a thought in our mind. It's just like that classic movie, The wizard of Oz. When Dorothy arrived at the Emerald City, the great Wizard of Oz appeared to be all powerful and mysterious, and he made everyone tremble. He seemed larger than life. But when Dorothy and her friends pulled back the curtain, the "wizard" was just an ordinary man blowing smoke and pushing a lot of buttons. There's a story about a woman who was newly divorced, almost penniless, afraid of public places, and trying to raise two teenage sons. After several tragedies in her life, she developedsevereagoraphobia (fearofbe

She loved to cook and all she knew to do for income was to make sandwiches and other simple foods. With the help of her sons, she found new customers and her sons delivered the food. She chose to do the latter. Her busi ness grew so much that she eventually had her own television show. Look inside. Think about all the things you've always wanted to do but haven't because of fear. Whenever you and I are tempted to doubt our ability to start something new and accomplish something, we need to recognise that feeling as a symptom of fear it's not a reality. Like the perception of the great and powerful Oz, it is merely illusory. We need to pull back that 'curtain of fear' and believe that we can do great things, that we have seeds of greatness inside of us. So go ahead, start exploring those seeds of greatness inside of you and re member to always dream big!

many articles have been written about being financially prepared for retirement but very few articles talk about what you need to do to stay financially comfortable. It is more difficult to deal with financial challenges when you are retired than when you are young. So take these steps now to stay financially secure and look out for the following risks:

Wilfred Moyo, Investment & Economic Strategist at Metropolitan

Inflation risk is a reality and happens when your pension doesn’t keep up with inflation, e.g. in 2005 R20 could buy you three bags of rice, but now it’ll only buy you one bag.

this leads us to the longevity risk – living long and possibly running out of income. the savings we have when we retire may not be enough to support us in our golden years, especially with medical technology that lets us live longer. another risk that gets overlooked is consumption risk – consuming more than what your financial plan can support. Schedule an annual review of your investments and stay in touch with your financial affairs. then there’s investment risk – the risk of making the wrong investment decisions. there isn’t much time to fix any wrong investment choices after you’ve retired so get a qualified financial adviser to help you. Your financial partner before and at retirement We can help with one of the biggest financial decisions that will impact the rest of your life. Contact the Stanger and mandeni branches and our area office on (087) 742 3312 or visit us at the Whitehouse centre, shop 9, corner mahatma Gandhi and albert Luthuli Street, Stanger. You can also contact the tongaat branch on (031) 369 8891.

Newlands trounce Ilembe NEWLANDS East Kensley trounced Ilembe by 25 runs in a KwaZuluNatal Challenge League game played at the Country Club Ground on Sunday. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first in overcast conditions. The match was reduced to 45 overs due to rain and a slightly damp wicket. The champs are here >> Grove End win volleyball league title WEEKLY REPORTER GROVEEndwas crownedEZE’SElectrical-sponsored Stanger and District Volleyball Association (SDVA) Competitive League champions after stunning reigning champions, KSST (2-1) before a huge crowd at the association courts on Thursday night. Volleyball pundits expected KSST to successfully defend their fourth consecutive league title after their 2-0 demolition of arch-rivals, Randsons a fortnight ago but left the courts red faced after ruing their missed opportunities. Grove End’s league honours must be attributed to the return of the “prodigal son” Ronald “Tiger” Ponnsamy midway into their league campaign. After the

first two rounds of the competitive league, the league title chase looked like a two-horse race between former champions Randsons and defending champions KSST. However, Ponnsamy’s return to competitive volleyball, after almost nine months, set the courts ablaze and took Grove End out of the doldrums. His presence on the courts served as a catalyst to his teammates, who upped their tempo. His constant encouragement to “young-bloods” Vinnie Singh and Sherwin Adayyapa has given Grove End a new lease on life. In Thursday’s crucial league encounter KSST were in sixes and sevens and watchedindisbeliefasGroveEndmercilessly annihilated them. Ponnsamy and
