While shot nerves got the better of some, others shone through the elimination rounds until only 10 remained. After lunch, they took to the stage where five of them succumbed to the pressure of some very difficult words. The top five contestants were given two chances to prove themselves as a bonus round applied. In the bonus round, contestants had to spell and define the words which the judges asked, which proved to be no easy task.

SHLENKOSI Secondary School pupils who were disciplined for late coming turned violent and went on a rampage, ripping out doors and windows from the school, stoning police vehicles and in the process causing hundreds of thousands of rands of damages on Thursday. During the riot a pupil was shot at the Shakaville school . According to reports, cases of attempted murder and damage to property are being investigated by KwaDukuza SAPS. It is believed that a group of pupils arrived late to school and the gates were closed in accordance with the education department’s policy. As a result pupils are believed to have begun a violent protest, some even attacking local law enforcement officials. It is believed that during the rioting the pupil was shot in the knee. The pupil was taken to the Stanger Hospital for treatment. Further details on the pupil have yet to be made available. Terrified educators were held hostage by the pupils, who rained stones on the school, making it impossible for them to leave, even though the police were present. officers were stoned for no reason. I am sure many of the pupils were under the influence of alcohol or drugged. In their normal sense they would never have behaved in such a manner. “They showed no respect for the law. Where is our country going to?” he asked. The court heard how Sipho Mthetwa killed a 76year-old woman and tried to murder her 80-year-old sister on March 13 last year. The women were sitting outside their RDP house doing beadwork when Mthetwa attacked them. Mthetwa stabbed the 76-year-old repeatedly in her chest, arms and back. Her sister tried to intervene and was stabbed in the back.

The 80-year-old woman died on the scene. Mthetwa fled on foot. The court heard the testimony of a neighbour who had witnessed the incident. The woman testified that Mthetwa casually walked towards the women accusing them of gossiping and stabbed them. The suspect then walked away from the scene with his knife dripping in blood and flung it into a nearby bush. KwaDukuza SAPS attended the crime scene and found Mthetwa hiding at his aunt’s house and arrested him. He pleaded not guilty to both counts, but his alibi was found to be false, thanks to evidence from the investigating officers.

THE African National Congress launched Imvuselelo 2014 at the Nkbongo Sports Ground on Saturday. Provincial Secretary of the ANC, Sihle Zikalala, NEC members Joe Phaahla and Zizi Kodwa, PEC members Hlagnipho Ntombela, Mike Mubaykhulu and provincial treasurer Peggy Nkonyeni, Regional Members of the Greater KwaDukuza area, mayors, councillors and the community attended the event. The Imvuselelo, which means “Re-awakening”, is a special rally and was launched in 2009 at the 52nd Polokwane Conference with the aim to intensify branch work in each community. This is to ensure sustainable mass work and establish ANC branches as vanguards of their communities, and to make branches the focus of political and ideological work for cadreship of the movement. Before the campaign, ANC top brass went on a door to door visit. Residents in Protea Heights spoke about crime - which is out of control - and drugs at a nearby secondary school. Mubayakhulu told the people that he would call up community meeting with all the residents, the Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS and other stakeholders to address the people’s complaints.
With Regional Chairperson of the ANC, Thokozani Msweli, the programme director for that day, cold wind did not deter the spirits of the reasonably filled stadium, with entertainment provided by local music groups and DJs. Zikalala started his speech by asking all members of the ruling party to stand and take an oath of commitment to all the party’s aims and objectives. Zikalala also outlined the four resolutions to be implemented as theroadnowleadstothe2016Local Government Elections. These resolutions included: 1. Every branch, region and province must do community outreach every Friday, starting this week. 2. Every young person over the age of 18 should be not only a registered member but of the Youth League. 3. Women and girls will be given preference and every woman over the age of 18 should join the Women’s League. 4. In September, the Youth league will hold Nelson Mandela Memorial Lectures and Cadres Assemblies and do Door-to-Door campaign to campaign for memberships. “The ANC will not hesitate to remove people who are not doing work, because they must deliver. “The ANC is here to make the lives of the people better. If any councillor is found not doing his job, then they must go,” said the provincial secretary.

of the past”, said Mthembu. KDM acting executive director for technical services Siyabonga Khanyile, said a couple of poles were burned down by sugar cane fires which resulted in some damages to government infrastructure whichultimatelyresultedinpower outages. “We then commenced with the repairs which lasted for about three hours,” he said. In a separate incident, a planned shut-down by Eskom went wrong in Ballito and surrounding areas last weekend. The shut-down planned for 1am to 3am reportedly exceeded the period due to ‘delays’. “The shut-down was scheduled to take place in the “wee” hours to minimize disruption on the side of consumers, for some reason things did not work out as planned,” said Khanyile.
meaning, energy, movement, enriching personal relationships, longevity and a feeling of well being. “This cannot be achieved by swallowing a tablet. It can only be achieved by creating balance within our bodies, a healthy wholesome diet and life style, replacement of many nutrients and hormones that decline with age, regular moderate exercise, good quality sleep and the cultivation of a positive and realistic mind-set. People don’t have to accept the poor health rut that they’re in,” said Palm. He said age-related decline can be slowed, or even reversed.
DURBAN Integrated health practitioner, Hennie Palm, gave a thought-provoking and inspiring talk on the subject of age management and the importance of keeping thoroughly fit to help slow down the ageing process at the Hirsch’s Ballito networking breakfast last week. “Health cannot be equated with the absence of the symptoms of disease,” said Palm. This is the mistake that is often made in modern medicine and whymanytreatments are focused upon symptom reduction in a “silver bullet approach”he says. Palm said health in our context is equated with vitality,

Zulu maidens prepare for annual Reed Dance MERVYN KRISHNA HUNDREDS of Zulu maidens from the iLembe District who will be participating in the popular annual Reed Dance in Nongoma this week attended a sendoff ceremony at the Thembeni Sports Ground on Saturday. Her Royal Highness Queen MaDlamini and other members of the royal family attended the event. In her address, Queen MaDlamini expressed how happy she was to see young women taking control of their
bodies and ultimately their lives and futures. She also discussed what attire is expected to be worn by maidens attending the Reed Dance and how it should be worn and explained the symbolic significance of the reed. “The reed is very fragile and needs to be handled with care. It represents our young women. They are young and innocent and should be taught how to behave, to be proud of their bodies, to believeinthemselvesandtoholdontotheir virginity until such a time that they are ready,” said Queen MaDlamini.

iLembe farmers given new gear THE iLembe District Municipality handed over ploughing material and protective gear to three cooperative projects in Maphumulo and Ndwedwe recently. The projects, mainly dominated by women, participate in the implementation of a revised school feeding scheme in the District. Enterprise iLembe, the District’s Economic Development Agency, has signed a Service Level Agreement with the Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal for the provision of fresh produce through local cooperatives/ local producers where Enterprise iLembe acts as a managing agent to administer the National School Nutrition Programme within iLembe by providing fresh produce to schools in the District. Mayo, Welcome Mdabe and iLembe councillors in the Economic Development and Planning Portfolio Committee visited the Embo Flagship in Ward 11 in Maphumulo, the Mshiyeni project in Ndwedwe and the Mary Grey project in Ward 7, also in Ndwedwe, to hand over the necessities. Addressing the Embo Flagship, Mdabe told the project members this visit was about more than just handing over the protective clothing and material. “We are also here to look at the infrastructure and see what is broken and what can be done to fix it,” he said. The clothing included safety boots, workwear pants and jackets, gloves and hard hats as well as gardening tools. While visiting the Mary Grey project, the delegates heard how the cooperative recently harvested five tons of cabbages (5000 kg) for the school nutrition project. “We want you to get to the point where you have your own tractor for harvesting. We as iLembe District Municipality want to see you grow,” said Mdabe. R1.4 billion mall for Ballito
>> KZN boomtown Ballito to get R1.4 billion regional shopping centre
T
HE rapidly growing town of Ballito is set to get a R1.4 billion regional mall. Developersandinvestors, theMenlyn Maine and Flanagan and Gerard consortium, have acquired Ballito Junction Shopping Centre and the adjacent undeveloped land and development rights. The acquisition of the existing 11000m2 mall and prime 10ha property at the entrance to Ballito will see Ballito Junction expanded to a massive 65,000m2, transforming it into the area’s first regional shopping centre. Development rights that exist on the site allow for the centre to be further expanded to 90,000m2 and “super-regional” shopping centre status. Construction on the project – the largest single development since Zimbali Resort – will start later this year and be complete in March 2017.
“The extended Ballito Junction is positioned to be the dominant shopping centre in the area. It will offer a world-class mix of fashion and variety stores as well as entertainment that will include cinemas,” says Patrick Flanagan, executive director of Flanagan and Gerard. “The centre will have state-of-theart family entertainment and restaurants and fast food outlets. The position of the site and its views to the east over the Indian Ocean will see a number of restaurants offering al fresco dining with sea views,” he adds. “The existing centre will continue to trade, largely unaffected by constructionactivities. However, thecentre will undergo a degree of modernisation, soastotieintotheexpansion.” The new Ballito Junction mall will beoverthree-levelandoffergenerous parking over five levels (two under-
Sadtu draws huge numbers for Women’s Day celebration MERVYN KRISHNA SADTU KwaDukuza hosted their International Women’s Day celebration recently at the KwaDukuza Town Hall. The day was observed through song, prayer and remembrance lecturers. The celebration remembered the role women played towards the liberation of South Africa from 1956 and beyond. Sadtu regional gender convenor Nomvula Ngcobo reminded the younger generation women never to forget the lengths their elders took to ensure equality with regards to socio economic matters. “Women need not relax as the struggle for equilibrium towards socio economic freedom is not yet realized. “Each time we see the number 50 000, we must think of the women who descended to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to fight for the rightswe, aswomenenjoytoday. We have more women in the boardroom, in government, and in leadership positions than at any point in history. Through consistent effort, lobbying and decisive leadership we have seen an increase in the critical mass of women's visibility in every aspect of life.

Residents say, however, that the new roads into Ballito and the current electricity supply would not be sufficient to cater to such a development. “We have power outages all the time as it is. How is the municipality going to provide enough power to such a large centre as well?” said business owner Barry Korb.

OPINION
Your service stinks STEPH MCLENNAN
C
all me an old lady if you will. But in my days of being a student, and being ever poorer than I am now, I worked part-time in a bookshop. If I had shown any of our customers the dismal service, disgruntled demeanour, or utter disregard that people at various businesseshaveshownmeoflate,Iwouldhave been unemployed faster than I could say "would you like a packet with that?". "In my day", one was expected to address customers as "sir" or "ma'am"andtobesoattentivetotheir needs that on more than one occasion I was asked to stop hovering and leave people to browse. If customer service had gone any further, we'd have been carrying purchases to cars, washing feet and offering in-store massages while customers browsed. Fast forward 14 or so years, and customer service has not only gone out the window: it has disappeared without a trace, much like MH17.
I recently had to return a defective purchase to a local sports-goods store. I had lost my receipt for said item , but had been assured over the phone, by the manager, that if I came in with the item and a print-out of my credit card statement reflecting the transaction, all would be sorted out. Uponarrivingattheshoppingcentre, I single-handedly manoeuvred the equipment out of my car and into a trolley. This while a car guard, who later expected a tip, looked on. Out of breath and sweaty after lugging my pointless purchase from my car at the other side of the planet, I was met at thestorewiththeabsenceof the helpful manager and the blatant hostility of his staff. "Youdon'thaveyourreceipt,"they said. After giving them a brief lesson in their company's policies, a sullen phone call was made, and their tune changed. After two staff members walked away from me while I was mid-sentence in a conversation with them, I suggested to the assistant manager that some training in customer service be given. This was met with a raised eyebrow and look of disbelief. I have also been liaising with travel agents with
regards to an upcoming overseas holiday. As one does, I spoke to representatives from several different agencies, and the most affordable option that I originally found involved four different flights to reach my destination, and included a 20-hour stop-over. When a different agency offered me a direct flight for only R600 more, I naturally changed my mind. Upon having the courtesy to phone Agent 1 back, inform her of what I had been offered and ask her if she could offer me the same deal, I was shouted at and told that it was impossible to have obtained such a deal. Needless to say I won't be using her, or her travel agency, again. As for many of the waitrons I have encountered in recent months, don’t get me started. Customer service is, undoubtedly, only a small step up from being the guy who works for a plumber, for whom a work day involves being up to one's elbows in the faeces of people wealthier than you could dream of being. Thepayislittle, thehourslong, and the irksome customers without measure. On the other hand, a huge percentage of our population has no job at all. Smiling costs nothing, and the customer is always right.

Matter of fact SHOTOKAN Kokusai Karatedo South Africa (SKKSA), its Chief Instructor Aneel Dowlath Sensei and all affiliated instructors hereby distance themselves from the article entitled “Reaching for a dream” published on 18 July 2014 in the Stanger Weekly, which named Sensei Kanazawa in error, and in which a public request for sponsorship was made. The organisation advises that all fund raising was undertaken by the family of the student concerned, Tarika Gokar, in their personal capacity and not under the official
banner of the organisation nor its instructors. SKKSA further wishes to reiterate that Sensei Kanazawa was in no way associated with the training or examination programme attended by the student Tarika Gokar, and as such are of the belief that the use of his name constituted a grave inaccuracy. SKKSA does however confirm that Tarika Gokar has in fact graded to First Dan Black Belt. Sensei Aneel Dowlath SKKSA Founder, Chief Instructor and Technical Head
Hate speech against Indians – why? ONCE again we see hate speech against Indians on social media sites. This time it is from one Skhanyiso Edgar Khanyile who claims to be a law student. His utterances reflectawarped mind that has not embraced the democracy that we now enjoy. As South Africans, Indians have made immense contributions in all walks of life for many decades. We were not handed anything on a silver platter. Our forefathers worked hard under difficult and oppressive con-
ditions to improve their lives. The likes of Khanyile must remove the racist within themselves if they want to be called South Africans. His vile utterances reveal his ignorance and deep seated hatred for democracy and nation building. People who have his mind set must not be allowed to destabilise the harmonious relationships that we enjoy as citizens of OUR country. We are here to stay and the Khanyiles of this world must learn to live with it! LES GOVENDER
‘I am outraged by racist song’ IT is deeply saddening and utterly disgusting to note the clear incitement to violence toward the South African Indian community by Law student SkhanyisoEdgarKhanyile. I condemn, in the strongest
terms, the blatant racism toward a community which has made magnanimous contributions to the economy of this Country. Khanyile’s statements represent a growing intolerance to minority communities - specifically Indians. Therefore, we must not take his statements lightly, as we do not know the extent of this intolerance withincommunities across South Africa. In the same breath, we must not resort to cheap name calling and the like. We need not lower ourselves to the level of the stereotypical bile being spewed by Khanyile. After much consultation with my lawyers, I will be lodging a complaint with the Human Rights Commission as Mr Khanyile has threatened the lives and safety of all Indian men, women and children. Dead seal found at Salmon Bay

A dead seal washed up near the Boathouse, Salmon Bay, on Friday.
SHANNON HOPKINS A CAPE Fur Seal washed up dead at Salmon Bay on 29 August, and experts are stumped as to its cause of death. The seal was discovered on Friday morning. Lifeguards notified Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife experts, and covered the animal with a space blanket, in case it could be revived, until their arrival KZN Wildlife’s Lionel van Schoor said the species, now officially called the South African Fur Seal, is sometimes found on the North Coast at this time of the year, though not prolifically. Hesaidthesealssometimesdieofstarvationdue to not being able to find food in the area. “This seal was not emaciated though and had no visible injuries, so we don’t know what the cause of death was,” said van Schoor. He said the seal was young, in between being a juvenile and a fully-grown adult. “It could be that it had not learned how to find food on its own yet and had died from lack of nourishment,” suggested van Schoor. He said the seals were used to the very cold water of the Atlantic, and thus the cold weather recently would not have affected the animal.

Om Sai Ram Mrs. Sonapathy (Baby) Nunnen 1940-2014
Mom, you were like no other, you gave us life, nurtured us, taught us, dressed us, fought for us, held us in your arms, but most importantly loved us unconditionally. You fought fearlessly against all odds to create this life for your family. Your selflessness and caring loving ways showed in everything you did. The memories we shared with you will forever be treasured and etched in our hearts. There are not enough words to describe how important you were to your family and what a powerful influence you will continue to be. We thank God for giving us you! You fought a brave battle, now its time for you to rest in God’s arm. We know you will be watching over us. We love you very much. You and your family are invited to attend the 10th and 13th day ceremony of the late Mrs. Sonapathy (Baby) Nunnen which will be held at 08h00 on the 6th and 9th September 2014 respectively. Please accept this as a personal invitation. against Stanger Heights before following it up with a 8-wickets victory against KwaDukuza Primary a fortnight ago. On Thursday Manor entertained Dawnview in the final round-robin match in pool A. WEEKLY REPORTER THE Y2K 5km fun run hosted by KwaDukuza Athletic Club on Sunday at the Stanger Manor Ground was a huge success. Public relations officer of KDAC, Ashnee

Singh clinches darts singles title in straight sets WEEKLY REPORTER
SANJAY Singh clinched the KwaDukuza Darts Association singles title after trouncing Darrel Shanmagum in straight sets (2-0) in the final played before a partisan crowd at the Taste of India Restaurant in KwaDukuza on Wednesday night. Singh, who has been in prolific form prior to the South African Darts Championship in mid-July, was off the boil since his return to domestic darts at the start of August. He has proven to be a catalyst among his team-mates, but his recent dip in form underlined Nevil’s Auto below par performance in the recent Distell Richelieu Darts League after finishing at the foot of the log table. However, on Wednesday night, Singh was back to his brilliant best producing top-drawer darts. He clawed his way from a set down to oust Terrence Subban 2-1 in the quarter-finals to secure a semi-final berth against veteran darts campaigner Paddy Paday-
achee, who beat Neeran Somnath (2-1). Singh was all the rage in the semi’s, hammering Padayachee (2-0) to advance to the final. In the bottom half of the draws, Darrel Shanmagum proved too strong for Charlie Pillay, cantering to a fluent 2-0 win in the quarters. Justin Naidoo had to dig deep into his reserves to hold off a strong, late challenge by Nevil Kisten before winning 2-1 to secure a semifinal clash against Shanmagum. Naidoo, overwhelmed by reaching the semi’s for the first time in a major competition and justastepawayfromthefinal, was firing blanks against the Shanmagum which resulted in his 2-0 demise. Thefinalfailedtoproduce any fireworks with Singh romping to an impressive 2-0 win against Shanmagum to notch up yet another major silverware in his illustrious darts career. Tonight (Wednesday) KwaDukuza Darts Association will host a team doubles competition at the Taste of India Restaurant commencing at 7.30pm.

The Beez football outfit.
UN City Football Club and Beez shared the spoils in a SAFA KwaDukuza Local Football Association (KLFA) First Division League stalemate (1-1) played at the Recreation Ground on Saturday. It was a match marred by some horrendous decisions by the referee and officials of KLFA must address the appalling sub-standard of refereeing ahead of the 2014/2015 season which is expected to get underway later in the month. Bothteamsbattledtoadapttotheblustery conditions at the Recreation Ground and tried to use the wind to their advantage in the hope of catching their opponent flat-footed. But, playing against the wind in the first half, City enjoyed more territorial advantage. The Ntshawini-based City outfit should have opened their account as early as the 10th minute after Khanyisa Simelane beat the offside trap and with only the Beez keeper to beat, he kicked wide. Minutes later City’s striker Mlamuli Mbatha received a perfect through ball from midfielder Mpumelelo Dladla, but he missed the target from close. In the 30th minute Siphiwe Ntuli beat his marker on the right flank and his precisiontimed cross was brilliantly intercepted the lanky Luyanda Mtshali, who hammered a low drive to the left of the diving Beez keeper to give City a well deserved 1-0 lead. Trailing 0-1, Beez put on the pressure in search of an equaliser before the break and should have snatched one after Zakhele Labhane beat his marker, but ballooned the ball skyward. Early in the second half, David Ndlovuwatchedagonisinglyafterhisheader beat the City keeper, just missing the far upright. Midway into the second half, Mtshali weaved his way into the box with a darting run before shooting wide. Minutes later Vuyolwethu’s powerful long range shot beat the Beez keeper but just eclipsed the crossbar. On the stroke of the hour-mark, Beez introduced former Nandi Shooting Stars striker Nqobani Mbuyisa into the fray in the hope of finding an equaliser, but he failed to impress. With less than ten minutes remaining Mtshali was brought down just outside the box by the Beez central defender in a tackle. Mtshali’s appeal to the referee to produce a yellow card for the reckless challenge turned out to be a joke after he was shown the card. InthedyingminutesofthegameBeezwas awarded a dubious penalty by the inept referee. Ayanda Mkhwanazi slotted the resultant spot-kick to give Beez a share of the spoils (1-1). A dejected City goalkeeper, Xolani Sibisi said in the post-match interview that they were robbed of three valuable points by the referee. Meanwhile, Darnall Young Tigers trounced City Lads 3-1 in a KLFA Division One League game.
