ervice delivery protests by the Etete and Groutville communities that turned violent on Sunday have yet to be dispersed. Speaking to the Weekly on Tuesday morning, Umhlali police spokesman Percy Buthelezi said he was not sure when the Etete and Groutville protesters would be fully disbanded. “We are scared that pushing the
community to disperse will result in bloodshed,” he said. The protest started on Sunday and by Monday Etete and Groutville residents blocked the R102, demanding housing and calling for service delivery. A police helicopter circled above the crowd as protesters chanted that they would make the township ‘ungovernable’untiltheirdemandswere met. The R102 was barricaded with

“No one has been here to address us, so this is our way of addressing them,” said Magwaza. He said the community was tired of dealing with its ward councillor, and wanted someone ‘higher up’ to speak to. He said their goal was achieved when KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu together with his council, officials and members from the Greater KwaDukuza regional executive committee arrived on Monday
afternoon. Mthembu told the crowd MEC for human settlements, Ravi Pillay, will visit the area this week. Mthembu said he is obliged to take the community’s issues to a provincial level. “I appeal to the community to stop protesting and be a little more patient with us,” he said. Magwaza said roads would no longer be barricaded, but protests would continue.

First gated estate in Mandeni JYOTHI LALDAS
P
OTENTIAL home owners on the North Coast will be spoiled for choice as yet another gated estate enters the market, this time in the northern part of iLembe. The Jackalberry Residential Estate, the first gated estate in the Mandeni area, is a joint venture between Sappi Tugela Mill and the Elan Property Group. The estate plans were launched on Thursday last week with detailed presentations made to all stakeholders including current residents. Speaking at the event, CEO of the Elan Group, Mark Taylor said on the banks of the Tugela River lies an existing residential neighbourhood comprising some 250 stand-alone freehold homes of which 150 are owned by Sappi. “Jackalberry Estate, named after the beautiful Jackalberry trees in this area, will be a first of its kind in the region and will offer value for money purchases of free standing three and two bedroom homes. “These can be purchased to live in or as an investment for out of town buyers as the rental requirement is very high for local residents. Almost all of the properties brought to the market for sale are already occupied with tenants and can be transferred immediately.” He said Jackalberry Estate will comprise an already existing nine hole golf course with eighteen tee boxes, an events centre, bar, restaurant, gatehouse, 24 hour security and electrified fencing extending around the entire estate which

Speaking to the Weekly, Mandeni mayor, Sphesihle Zulu said the estate will open up a whole new opportunity for Mandeni. “This estate will attract investment to the area and really put us on the map as a viable tourism spot. Taylor added that any purchase of a property under R600 000 does not attract transfer duties which is “a further attractive element to the estate”. “Investors will be able to purchase the property and place it with the on-site rental agents for leasing purposes, ensuring that there is a constant flow of rental income to buyers.” The management plan within the estate ensures the dropping of all residential fences between each property, applying and introducing decorative

MPL’s Yusuf Bhamjee and Maggie Govender during the meeting ployees tasked with organising the meeting did a poor job. “There was no proper indication, no agenda and the invitations were selective, leaving out a huge chunk of Indian stalwarts who could have made a difference to the cause. “Furthermore, the choice of Glenhills as a venue and the long weekend also excluded certain supporters from attending. Glenhills is not at all central.” Mthembeni Zungu, a SADTU member, said it was ‘pathetic’ to see the ANC busy with huge developments in the black communities, but not a single thing was being done for the minorities. “Even the service delivery is pathetic in these areas,” he said. Sunil Singh of Tugela said ANC deployees especially in the Indian community were an embarrassment.
He said they were not representative of the community and were actually rejected by them. He cited ‘dirty tricks’ at branch level where certain individuals were desperately prevented from participating in decision making or becoming officer bearers. Govender said the elected representatives had lost their credibility and were failing the community by attempting to block those who wanted to contribute to the growth of the organisation. These individuals, the meeting was told, had self interests and were not concerned about general service delivery. Bhamjee said they were able to gather enough information which they would take back to the provincial leadership for further investigation.

OVER 1000 angry Nyoni community members blocked the main road near Isithebe and Amatikhulu demanding the mayor, Sphesihle Zulu, inaugurate the area’s Project Steering Committee (PSC) at 2am on Monday. According to the community liaison officer, Scelo Zondi, the community is still angry about the pace of the housing project, which is why there was an urgent need to inaugurate a new PSC. Zondi said: “After visiting the houses that are being built we noted all the problems and the community elected a new Project Steering Committee which should have been inaugurated on Sunday by the mayor or speaker. When they did not arrive we took to the streets the following day.” He further said: “We are deeply concerned about the pace of this project which is why we have chosen a new committee which will work hard to ensure that all the processes are transparent and to ensure that the contractor is capable of doing the job.” Zondi said they (community) do not have enough information about the housing project at the moment and said the committee will make sure they receive all the information as they suspect ‘corruption’. About a week ago the community members marched to Mandeni Municipality demanding houses which they said were being built at a ‘snail’s pace’ and for the contractor to employ locals. KZN SAPS spokesperson captain Thulani Zwane said the protesters threw stones at the police who used rubber bullets and teargas to disperse them. According to Zwane a public violence docket was opened. No arrests were made.
“GATEKEEPING by ANC councillors is taking place in KwaDukuza and this must stop.” These were the words of member of provincial legislature (MPL), Yusuf Bhamjee who together with MPL, Maggie Govender visited KwaDukuza to address an ICW volunteer workshop at the Glenhills Community Hall on Sunday, August 11. By and large the majority of the ANC supporters in KwaDukuza were not informed about the meeting and were, therefore, absent. One speaker at the meeting, who chose to remain anonymous, said it was inexplicable that the ANC expected those at the meeting to go out and conduct a door-to-door campaign. He said those present at the meeting were bused in by “Indian councillors who were trying to keep the ANC for themselves” and that the youth were also excluded. “The huge contingent of high calibre professionals and businesspeople who attended a meeting called up prior to the president's visit on July 24 at the KwaDukuza Town Hall are conspicuous by their absence,” he said. A visibly angry Ram Makerdhooj, one of the few attendees who would be able to mobilise the community, said the ANC did not show real concern for its member's grievances. He lashed out at the calibre of councillors deployed in the name of the ANC within the ‘Indian wards’. Roy Naicker, a circuit inspector in the department of education and winner of the national teaching award, said the regional de-

MF leader hails women's struggle role MERVYN KRISHNA Child Welfare SA-KwaDukuza, the Dolphin Coast Hospice and the Minority Front joined South Africa in celebrating Women's Day last week. As South Africans kicked back and relaxed during Friday’s public holiday, many have forgotten the significance behind August 9, said Minority Front leader Shameen Thakur-Rajbansi, who was speaking at a Women's Day celebration at the Shri Sanathan Mundal Hall on Sunday, August 11. “On the 9th of August 1956, more than 50 000 women staged a march on the Union Buildings in Pretoria. “Bundles of petitions containing more than 100 thousand signatures were left outside then Prime Minister JG Strijdom's office in protest against Apartheid era pass laws,” said ThakurRajbansi. She went on to say Women’s Day is very important because without women ‘we wouldn't be there anyway’. “Women are often behind the scenes and

it's just a day to celebrate and remember. So, we have to celebrate, buy your woman something nice.” While for some the day is just about celebrations, it has a deeper meaning for others. Guest speaker at the Dolphin Coast Hospice, Ragini Nair said the 50 000 women who staged a march to the Union Buildings went there to make a stand, to make their voice heard about something critical in their lives at the time. “So today we celebrate the strength of those women.” One of the speakers at the Child Welfare SAKwaDukuza event, Lolly Pillay, said a lot may have changed since that fateful day but many things have remained the same. “Men still rule the world. Men don’t have that belief that women can make a difference in this world and I believe that something of this sort needs time to change. “While some women believe one day a year isn’t necessary to affirm their importance, National Women’s Day is a way in which we can honour the role of women in society,” said Pillay.

The dilemma of Facebook friends who simply don't exist Facebook is quite a popular social network which most people have included in their lives. As a teenager I spent a lot of my time on Face book, until I grew tired of it. However, I still see most people finding Facebook a most interesting place to catch up on gossip, witness arguments and update their dramatic statuses. What really caught my attention recently though, was the ‘fake Facebook profile’ issue. I noticed some strange happenings on Facebook in relation to this and decided to do a bit of investi gating. Quite a few of my Facebook friends had all be come friendly with a girl on Facebook, but what none of my friends actually knew was the ‘girl' wasn't even real. You're probably wondering how I knew 'she'
wasn't real. Well, as it turns out all of the photo graphs 'she' uploaded of 'herself' were of someone else, someone I actually knew. I'm not quite sure how this person got access to one of my friend’s pictures, but 'she' created a whole profile which looked authentic and was so believable because 'she’ had over 30 pictures of 'herself' (actually my friend). The real person didn't even have a Facebook account, so all these pictures were, I assumed, tak en off BBM (Blackberry Messenger) and uploaded to Facebook. Here's the part that will get everyone wonder ing whether the person they are chatting to on Facebook is real or not. Firstly, every picture on this fake Facebook pro file had at least 30 to 40 comments from guys who thought she was beautiful and were trying to com pliment her. She even uploaded screenshot conversations which came from Whatsapp between 'her' and oth er guys. Eventually, after speaking to my friend, who is incampuswithmeandlivesinJohannesburg, about the whole situation, she got to investigating and finally figured it all out. Turns out an exboyfriend decided to play a prank on her and created the fake profile. Which basically meant a good number of KwaDukuza boys were actually chatting and flirting with a guy. It's disgusting to know someone could create a fake profile just to play games with someone. It's just as sad that we are so trusting that we become friends with people we don't even know and become close to random people who may not even exist. Soon enough, face to face, human interaction will become extinct and we will be reduced to Facebook profiles, Twitter accounts and BBM and Whatsapp emoticons. Do you have a story that you would like to share withmeaboutafakeFacebookprofilethatyoumay have interacted with? Send youremailtoPriya.nunkumar@gmail.com

WHY SHOULD Indians be sidelined? MAZIBUYE African Forum seems to be a racist organi sation while our country has moved on with democracy and its challenges. To even suggest to strip Indians of BEE beneficiary status smacks of jealousy of the great strides Indians have made in our economy and country as a whole. We have lived in harmony with our black brothers and sisters. We should help in building our nation based on its diversity, bringing in different skills and ex perience. Already the Indian community is discriminated through affirmative action and equity plans. I do not want to dwell on the history of the Indian community, but I want to emphasise education was close to their hearts and the fruits are reaped genera tions after generation. It was possible all through hard
work and perseverance. We know BEE has benefited some through lucra tive government contracts and did little to encourage and support emerging black businesses. Broadbased black economic empowerment must be supported, including Indians. If correctly imple mented, it will pull people into the economy, reduce unemployment and stimulate growth. The utterances by the forum to put fear in the Indian community have instead galvanised the minori ty community of about 1.2 million people. We must not blight our democracy but rather build a brighter future for ALL. ONE NATION ONE FUTURE. Councillor Madhun Sobram Sing DA Chairperson iLembe Constituency
To concrete, or not to concrete? I OWN a limited commercial property in Rocky Park. Due to it being at the lower end of Rocky Park I have a problem when it rains as water gushes onto the verge surrounding my property. This is dangerous for people walking into my store. I therefore concreted the verges around my building about five years ago. Three years ago I was ordered by Farlan Ramsamy Naidoo from the KwaDukuza Municipality to remove the concreting. He said the land belonged to the mu nicipality and I had no right to concrete it. I duly removed the concrete as per his instructions.
Now the place is very untidy and unkempt. The munici pality does not see it fit to clean up this verge, yet it was a problem when I was ensuring its cleanliness. If one takes a drive around KwaDukuza, almost ev eryone who owns property has concreted their drive way, which is the verge belonging to the municipality, even employees of the municipality. The concreting was not an eyesore in fact it was the total opposite of it. Why is it that I was asked to remove it? Was it done just to make my life difficult? Makes you think, doesn’t it? I write my mind out >> Young writers to celebrate their work WEEKLY REPORTER
E
LEVEN young North Coast writers will get to see their work in print at the third annual launch of the “I Write My Mind Out” anthology at the Luthuli Museum on Thursday, August 15 at 10am. The launch is the result of a part-
nership between the Fundanami Trust established by retired English teachers Michael and Eliz Wood, to assist in improving literacy among schools in KwaZulu-Natal, and the Luthuli Museum. This is the third collection of short stories and poems entitled “I Write My Mind Out” produced by primary
school learners from schools such as Stanger Secondary, Mavivane, Nonoti, Glenhills, Melville and Zilungisele Primary Schools. At the launch the learners will present their work produced during a three day workshop in May to their peers, parents, educators and members of the media.
Fundanami Trust director Mike Wood said one of the key objectives of the Fundanami trust is to produce books which reflect a South African content and have anecdotes that are strongly flavoured by a life experience here. “We want learners to have the opportunity to read about things that
they can relate to and that reflect what they experience.” Wood added, “Each year we are delighted by the quality of writing produced. Seeing your work in print is a memorable and very stimulating opportunity. “I am sure the children will enjoy this very much.”

He was the captain for the under 19 KZN volleyball squad at the Inter Provincial Tournament held in Limpompo in July this year. In 2011 he won the VSA Cup with KSST Volleyball Club. Grove End tighten grip on league title WEEKLY REPORTER GROVE End tightened their grip on the Sunil Pranpath Incorporated-sponsored Stanger and District Volleyball Association Corporate League title after chalking up an impressive double-header victory on Wednesday night.
In their opening fixture against Cool Leaders, Grove End had to claw their way from a set down before registering a hard earned 2-1 win. A catalogue of unforced errors by the Cool Leaders’ lads led to their 10-15 demise in the final set. With the win under their belts, Grove End raced to an early 7-3 lead against Powertrans, forcing their opponents into an early timeout.
