- OUR MISSION -
To advocate the partnership of business and community to preserve, enhance, and promote those unique qualities that make Gratiot County a great place to live, work, and visit.
Welcome to Gratiot County
Greetings!
As I sit here writing this letter, I am just about to celebrate the six-month mark of being the Chamber Director. Today is a blustery day with sporadic snow flurries. The Chamber office is decorated and ready for Santa to visit during Come Home to Alma for the Holidays. Tomorrow we celebrate the holidays in St Louis, followed by Ithaca, and then Breckenridge. Throughout the month, the small village of Ashley hosts their Country Christmas celebration as the Polar Express train visits. It truly is a magical time here in Gratiot County.
But isn’t that true of Gratiot County throughout the entire year? Spring brings us the Highland Festival and as the grounds continue to thaw out, our Farmers Markets come back to town. A flood of golf outings and summer block parties begin. We gather to celebrate our Farm Family of the Year and Agriculture Business of the Year at Rural Urban Day. There are fireworks, parades, car cruises, the DALMAC, and lots of ice cream. The sidewalks bustle with people walking and kids on bikes. The fairground is filled with the sounds of animals and people laughing. Soon we enter into the Fall, where we have our schools’ homecomings, the Agri-Fit Challenge, Fall festivals, and downtown Trick-or-Treating.
Behind all of these events are hundreds of volunteers and businesses that donate time and money. We have unique stores and restaurants, talented salons and barbers, and skilled locally-owned manufacturers and automotive shops. We have selfless non-profit organizations that improve the lives of so many. We have an ever-evolving healthcare system that is Gratiot’s largest employer. We have a community-minded higher education institution that offers year-round educational and recreational activities for the community.
Yes, Gratiot truly is a magical place.
Use this Guide to learn more about this wonderful place so many of us get to call home. And if you’re ever by the Chamber Office, stop in and say “Hi!”
Warmly,
Sara Bonacci Executive DirectorChamber of Commerce

Health Care IN GRATIOT
COUNTY
Offering State-Of-The-Art Care In A Rural Setting
MyMichigan Medical Center Alma is a 97-bed teaching hospital located in Alma, Michigan, specializing in high-quality rural medicine. The Medical Center has been serving the health care needs of residents throughout central Michigan since 1955. It is a member of MyMichigan Health and is affiliated with Michigan Medicine, the health care division of the University of Michigan.
To keep you and your family healthy, we are continuously expanding access to primary care providers including family medicine, internal medicine and obstetrics/gynecology. Along with our Medical Center campus in Alma, we have physician offices in Ithaca, Alma, Breckenridge, Shepherd and Mt. Pleasant and on the campus of Alma College. We offer online scheduling; virtual care including telemedicine, video visits and e-visits; and a patient portal for personal access to your health information. We also have convenient urgent care and state-ofthe-art emergency services located at the Medical Center. With an innovative approach to delivering excellent care to patients, our Hospital at Home (Ha) program allows for inpatient level care in the comfort of one’s own home. Besides the lower cost the program provides to patients, additional benefits include receiving care in familiar surroundings, removing traveling costs and eliminating transportation barriers.
Our full range of specialty services include heart and vascular care, cancer care, orthopedics, general and bariatric surgery, urology, diagnostic imaging, laboratory, maternity, behavioral health, pain management, sports medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation, a wound treatment center and rehabilitative services including physical, occupational and speech therapy. Our ongoing investments ensure we have the latest in advanced technology. For example, we have recently added a new $2.6 million Maternity Center, invested $1 million in a Cardiac Catheterization Lab and installed the very latest in MRI technology.
We are currently in the process of a 51,200 square-foot operating room (OR) renovation and expansion project. This $34.5 million, multi-year project will include three new large, state-of-the-art surgical suites; two procedure rooms; private pre-operative and recovery rooms; as well as new sterile processing department with proximity to the OR. Our redesigned patient care areas will offer patients and their families increased privacy and security, as well as an environment of seamless, coordinated care. An additional phase of this project will include a new main entrance to the Medical Center.
What’s more, we are training the health care providers of the future. In 2016, a family medicine residency program was established to train family medicine physicians. Since this program’s start, we’ve exceeded our goal to keep at least 25 percent of graduates right here in Central Michigan. In addition, we partner with area nursing schools and other clinical disciplines to help train future healthcare team members. Our Simulation Lab offers a leading-edge way to train staff in patient assessment skills with life-like manikins that are programmed to present with symptoms and respond to treatments.
Above all, in addition to our patients, we care for our communities. We give back with our time, talent, and treasure through local support of a diversity of charitable, community and development organizations, such as Art Reach of Mid Michigan, the Alma Highland Festival, Central Michigan University, Child Advocacy of Gratiot County, food distributions with East Lansing Food Bank, Toys for Tots, United Way and more.
reclaim their vitality, return to their homes and resume their daily lives. Each of these centers can also become a “home away from home,” where memory and long-term care residents receive around-the-clock nursing care, therapeutic activities and nutritional support while enjoying a home-like atmosphere. Physician, dental, optometry and podiatry are provided within each center. Additionally, as an answer to a critical need for long-term ventilator dependent care, Masonic Pathways recently opened a specialized Assisted Breathing unit. Gratiot County is truly fortunate to have many high-quality options for our Seniors.

Parks & Recreation
Gratiot OutdoorCountyRecreation
Gratiot County Exploration
Gratiot County is extremely fortunate to have a multitude of recreational opportunities to serve a diverse and active population. Perhaps two of Gratiot’s greatest offerings are Paul Hubscher County Park in Sumner Township (west of Ithaca) and Reed County Park in North Star Township (south of Ithaca). Open to the public, both parks offer a swimming beach, a playground, nature trails, various sports fields, pavilions, and picnic tables & grills.
In addition to these major county parks, cities and villages within Gratiot County have a selection of local parks that offer a variety of amenities. For a complete listing of these parks, please visit each city’s website.
Outdoor enthusiasts are sure to enjoy Gratiot County’s offering of trails. The Fred Meijer Heartland Trail is 42 miles long and runs from Alma, Michigan to Greenville, Michigan. It is a smooth asphalt trail that can be used for walking, biking, skating, and other nonmotorized traffic. The Alma Mountain Bike Trail, located in Alma’s Pine River Park & Outdoor Center, offers a more exhilarating and scenic ride. Finally, a paved 6.6-mile non-motorized pathway was recently constructed along the east side of US Highway 127 from Ithaca to Alma. This trail is part of the efforts of Mid-Michigan Community Pathways, a community group that seeks to establish a cohesive nonmotorized route from Ithaca to Clare.
Gratiot County is home to the Pine and Maple rivers. The Pine River boasts a 30-mile canoe/kayak trail that runs from Riverdale to Alma with multiple access points. The trail is wheelchair accessible at Luneack County Park in Alma, Michigan, which also offers multiple parking spaces for easy access. Maple River, located in the southern portion of Gratiot County, is surrounded by three state game areas. Additional outdoor recreational activities include 9-hole and 18hole golf courses, a splash park, a public swimming pool, shooting ranges, and soccer fields. Indoor recreational opportunities are also available throughout Gratiot County. Various live theater and music performances occur at the Strand Theatre in Alma and the Gem Theater in St. Louis.
All cities and villages also offer beautiful downtown settings with a variety of dining options and unique shopping opportunities. Other indoor recreational options include a movie theater, public libraries, a bowling alley, indoor swimming pools, arcades, health clubs / gyms, and dance lessons. Suffice it to say that Gratiot County has a great variety of recreational activities that are sure to meet anyone’s needs and interests.

Gratiot County History
The City of Ithaca is home to many historical sites including the Courthouse, Historical & Genealogical Society and Historical Museum. The museum, located adjacent to the Ithaca Public Library, displays various artifacts and much of the history of Gratiot County. The Historical and Genealogical Society can be found in the 130-year-old Georgiana Peet Miller home. There you can research the names of every resident who has ever lived in the county. An archive of original newspapers spanning the past 100 years is also on file at the Society. History buffs will find both locations a must stop in Gratiot County.
Other Gratiot County historical sites include the Plank Road Museum in Breckenridge, the St. Louis Area Historical Society in St. Louis, and the state’s smallest Post Office in Elm Hall. Walk or bike the Fred Meijer Heartland Trail to Riverdale and you’ll find the Riverdale Museum. In Riverdale, you might also want to stop by the Riverdale Tavern, one of the area’s oldest restaurants.
Winding a path through the southern half of Gratiot County is the railroad passing through Bannister, Ashley, Pompeii, Perrinton and Middleton. Ashley has well-known holiday tradition with in their old-fashioned country Christmas, which centers around their Polar Express rail line. Whether you are a passenger or spectator, the Polar Express can be exciting for everyone. The experience has become so popular that if you want a ticket to ride, you will want to purchase a ticket early this autumn.
Another key historical feature of Gratiot County is the recently restored Wright Leppien Opera House Block (see left). This historic building was constructed 140 years ago by Ammi Wright as a retail and entertainment venue. Unfortunately, it was destroyed by a fire in 2010. However, thanks to the leadership and generosity of Alma College, several community donors, and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the building has been restored to its original character and integrity. The building offers event space, retail stores, and student housing. The Opera House is now the cornerstone of Downtown Alma.

Linda Bader Spirit of St. Louis Award
Originally from Sandusky, MI, Linda Bader moved to Gratiot County in 1989 and worked as a programmer/ analyst at Alma Products for ten years. After her three children were born, she was able to become a stay-athome mom and run a website design business from home for the next 12 years. In 2011, she purchased her first residential rental property, and this was the beginning of her second business venture which is still active
In 2015, Linda started to research farmers markets in the the area as an outlet for all the extra produce she had from her garden and noticed that St. Louis did not have a market. With the support of local leaders, she became a Certified Market Manager through a training held by the Michigan Farmers Market Association (MIFMA). In 2016, the St. Louis Farmers Market was born. The market has grown much in the last six years. It is a way to support small businesses, improve access to healthy food, and provide a place in the community for people to come together. During Covid, they were able to adapt and provide a safe farmers market for vendors, volunteers, and customers. Linda has also partnered with MyMichigan Health to bring the Prescription for Health program to the market. The program provides nutrition education and free produce at the farmers market to encourage healthier eating habits. Linda has served as a member of the Gratiot Collaborative Council, Live Well Gratiot, and the MIFMA Board of Directors, where she has been President since 2020. She is also an active volunteer for the Gratiot Community Garden which provides free produce and a place where the community can come together.

of the Year
Most people know Carolyn as a long time educator. Carolyn taught for Alma Public Schools for 25 years and was the principal for Alma Middle School for almost 13 years. Since her official retirement, she has been the Director of the summer STEM camps at Alma College, coordinating sessions for 6th-12th grade students to further their math, science, and engineering skills. Carolyn also spends much of her free time as a board member of many local non-profits in our community and is active in volunteering and participating with philanthropic groups that keep her calendar full. She has a heart for community service, having donated much of her free time to nonprofit organizations in central Michigan. She has served on the Board of Directors for: Child Advocacy (ten years), including filling officer positions of Treasurer and President, the United Way of Gratiot & Isabella Counties, and Gratiot County Hope House. She also volunteers for The Royal Family Kids Camp as a placement coordinator of summer camp experience, at the food pantry at the First Presbyterian Church in Alma, at Alma Public Schools supporting the middle school’s STEM for Girls program and working the time clock at sporting events, as a youth advisor with the Gratiot County Community Foundation, with the Gratiot-Isabella College Access Network, and as a co-chair of Arts United.
Above all, she loves and supports her own family, which includes her son Kevin and daughter Katie, and four grandchildren: Sam, Simon, Dayton, and Zoe. She is modeling the love, devotion, and determination young people need as they raise the next generation of leaders.
Dr. David Freestone Ithaca Person of the Year
Dr. Freestone received his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University, attended medical school at the University of Michigan, and completed his residency in Albany, NY. Following this, he served his country in four years in the Air Force at Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi. He is an adventurous world traveler who has been to six of the seven continents and took 500 days to travel across America prior to beginning his career in Mid-Michigan. Following his exciting adventures, he decided to put down his roots here in Gratiot County where he could raise his son, Caleb, and daughter, Amelia.
His passion for service is evident throughout the community. Young children have enjoyed the playscape that was built in Woodland Park, of which he was the co-project manager. Dr. Freestone provides physicals for many of Ithaca’s student athletes and his presence on the sidelines of the football field, and various other sports, as team doctor has been invaluable. This type of involvement has allowed him to build both relationships and community. In addition to being passionate about the people in the community of Ithaca, he is committed to preserving and protecting the environment as well. Several acres of his property have been set aside through a Conservation Restoration Project to support native plant and wildlife species including pheasants, bees, and monarch butterflies. Throughout the last twenty years, with the help of his children and family, he has planted over 4,800 trees for future generations to enjoy.
