Our approved lab for DNA, Neogen, has increased the cost of blood and hair cards to the ASA and as a result, it is necessary to start charging for them to cover this increase, plus the postage it takes to send them. Blood cards are now $1/card and hair cards are $2/card. Methods for obtaining them have not changed. Please call the office or fill out the card request on shorthorn.org to order. The lab’s preferred methods are TSU samples and blood cards. TSU kits can be purchased directly through Neogen or Allflex. *Remember, there is an additional fee for testing hair and semen. **DO NOT test twins via blood samples.

The Board of Directors unanimously approved a new rule, which begins January 1, 2022: “All bulls (Shorthorn & ShorthornPlus) born January 1, 2022 and after will be required to have a genomic profile and parentage markers on file. In order to register any progeny with the American Shorthorn Association”. This means that regardless of service type, all bulls (Shorthorn & ShorthornPlus) used for breeding need to be genomically tested (currently, this is the 100K test but could be subject to change according to Neogen standards in the future). This pertains to AI sires as well as pasture sires/clean up bulls. The rule only affects bulls born after Jan 1, 2022, so this rule won’t really come into play until their progeny are born, late 2023 or 2024. Please be aware that AI sires still require the 3 genetic conditions as well – TH, PHA, and DS.

Getting on the Roll Call
W
e are already in April and Spring is starting to burst out, creating a newness around us. New baby calves and new plant growth, warmer weather and hopefully some rain - all this makes spring such a special and fresh time of the year, but also brings on spring work. Deadlines are coming up for the Shorthorn Junior National and Youth Conference. Deadline for ownership papers and entries is May 1st. If you miss the May 1st deadline, the late entry deadline is May 15th and will cost extra. This year’s event is in Kansas City at the American Royal and is one of the largest and most important events of the breed. All funding comes from donations and sponsorships. The cost continues to rise; we have budgeted close to $300,000 to put on this year’s event and keep the level of excitement it has had in the past. Last year this show and youth conference was voted most enjoyable by Best of the Barns for the second consecutive year. Just imagine the entire bottom and top stalling area of the Royal full of Shorthorn cattle. Be sure to get your entries in on time. The entry form is online on the Shorthorn Junior Page: juniorshorthorn.org. All entries are completed and submitted online. If you have issues or questions please feel free to call the office. Don’t wait until the last minute to submit the entries and/ or have your animals registered and in the juniors name. This special Shorthorn event has gained a lot of momentum. I look forward to seeing everyone in June in Kansas City - come and be part of one of the greatest cattle events of all breeds!

We have been sponsoring and hosting activities to commemorate our Shorthorn Association’s 150th anniversary. The ASA beginning was in 1872. This year the Shorthorn Country will be publishing a special edition of the Herd Book to recognize the Sesquicentennial (150th) of the American Shorthorn Association. We hope everyone will want to be part of this issue and make it the biggest July Herd Book ever! This will only happen if everyone gets on board and puts an ad in this issue. Shorthorn Country is giving special discounts for this year’s herd book ads – a 15% discount for returning customers and first-time/new advertisers get 20% off! And it gets better - if you get your ad material in and pay for your ad by May 15 you get an additional 5% discount. There will be special discounts for multi-page advertisers. This is a joint effort by the ASA and Shorthorn Country to add to the excitement and documentation of the ASA’s 150th year celebration. Imagine, 50 or 100 years from now, Shorthorn breeders will look back to this date and find all the proud Shorthorn breeders of today. Just 50 years from now will be the 200th anniversary of the ASA. Think about the young people, our children, who may be the driving forces of this breed. Their heritage is being formed today. The pride they’ll have pointing to an ad listing in this 150th special edition and say, “this is our family” or “here are your grandparents” as they show their children. It gives ownership in the breed to them and to you. You are not only sharing your pride of being proud to be a Shorthorn breeder today, you are giving
the future generations a look at what has made this breed so great over the years. This issue will go down in the history of the breed as the one time in America that all Shorthorn enthusiasts came together to show their strong conviction for this great breed. I challenge you to be a part of this year’s July Herd Book in some manner. Small or large, be a part of the roll call. The great discounts make a page very attractive. This tells the story of our breed in more ways than you can imagine. It shows the kind, type and progress of the breed which is the future of the breed when we get everyone’s input in this Herd Book edition. We have been reminiscing the past few months and celebrating the 150th with the publication of Shorthorn and the American Cattle Industry coffee table book. Be sure to order your copy online or one up at the Junior National or at the North American in Louisville, Time flies, the years roll on and we dream about doing this or that. Well don’t be a dreamer be a doer and get listed in this year’s Herd Book. It will be seen by many more than in the past. You have the opportunity to show your breeding operation to everyone for more than one month as this will be a reference issue for a number of years. Let’s make this the biggest and best issue of the Shorthorn Country ever!!! = See Detail of Special Offers on Page 5

Searching for Answers With most of the Shorthorn bull sales completed by the time you read this (hopefully you got the bull you wanted), it’s time to shift focus to breeding season. There’s plenty of decision making to be made in your breeding program, from breeding pasture size and availability, cow to bull ratio (don’t overload the young guys), and whether to use AI or natural breeding. This month, we will focus on the breeding and mating decision aspect of the season and how you can use Digital Beef to plan matings and identify genetics to add to your herd. As always, it is important to have goals for your breeding program headed into planning your matings for the coming year. Take the time to study your own herd (genetically and phenotypically) and determine where improvements can be made in the next generation. It’s hard to get where you want to go if you don’t know where that is! There are many ways to utilize the online breed registry to help you during breeding season planning, both from the female and male sides of the equation. Starting with the females, the “Reports” section of Digital Beef is a good resource. Utilizing the “Production Summary” report pulls together the production records on all your active females. It’s essentially the report card of your cow herd. The system will pull together all your cows, and all recorded data on their progeny, giving you the ability to
10
shorthorn country = april 2022
see which cows are making the grades and which ones may need some time in detention! To get a better look at EPDs in the cow herd, I love using the “Custom Report Builder” feature. The Custom Report allows you to focus on the information that is of most interest to your breeding program. Reports can be pulled based on age and sex, and you can select which data points, production info, and EPDs you want presented to you on the final spreadsheet that is output at the end. This is my go-to method to efficiently study data on groups of females. After studying those females, you might decide that AI is the most effective way to infuse the genetics that will take you towards your destination the quickest. The EPD Search function is a good option for identifying those potential AI sire candidates. Via “Search Tools” at the top of your Digital Beef page, you’re taken to the EPD search where you can enter your parameters a potential sire needs to meet. In addition to EPD thresholds (minimum and/ or maximums), you can sort purebreds only, by color, and if a bull has sired registered progeny to date. Once you input search parameters, the search will give back to you a list of bulls that meet your criteria, their entire EPD profile, and a link to their individual animal page in the registry to allow for further study. You will want to enter a couple
different EPD criteria into the search (to narrow the list some), but also don’t want to have criteria for every EPD (yield no matches). The message on the screen “fetching results...please be patient” needs to be adhered to, as it takes a few minutes to search the whole database. Clicking the button to start the search again just takes you back to square one and will make the process even longer. Once you’ve identified some prospect sires, you can see how they complement your cow herd on paper using the Progeny Calculator tool in Digital Beef. You can find this feature under the Tools menu. The Progeny Calculator tool gives you a quick glimpse into projected EPD profiles of a sire (herd bull or AI) for calves out of your females. For a more in-depth discussion of this tool, you can reference back to my article in the November 2021 issue of the Country. Best of luck with your upcoming breeding season. Hopefully, the information that Digital Beef puts at your fingertips gives you the opportunity to move your breeding program in the direction you want to take it in your pursuit of breeding better Shorthorns. If you have any questions about any of the features mentioned in this article, feel free to shoot me an email (matt@ shorthorn.org). =

Catching Greenlights When I was on my 12-hour drive by myself to Kansas from Houston after NCBA, I decided to listen to an audiobook. Typically, I am more of a listen to music or talk on the phone driver, I don’t even like podcasts much, but I had been interested in Matthew McConaughey’s memoir. McConaughey’s book was about a seven hour listen and narrated by the man himself, which is one of the reasons I originally was interested. The book titled Greenlights goes through McConaughey’s life story the hardships, failures, and successes. It includes tidbits of life advice and wisdom he has gained along the way, bumper stickers and greenlights as he calls them. He calls it his love letter to life. “Greenlights mean go – advance, carry on, continue…they say proceed. In our lives, they are affirmation of our way. They’re approvals, support, praise, gifts, gas on the fire, attaboys and appetites. They’re cash money, birth, springtime, health, success, joy, sustainability, innocence, and fresh starts. We love greenlights. They say yes and give us what we want.” He goes to say yellow and red lights are detours or stops along the way. They may slow us down and make life hard. Yellow
and red lights say no but sometimes can be what we need to lead us to the next greenlight. Catching the greenlights in life is about intent, resilience, discipline and more. It is about how we see the challenge in front of us and how we decide to face that challenge. It is about more yeses than nos. As I listened to this book, I felt that McConaughey’s advice and outlook on life was relatable. Not only in my daily life but my job and for the members of the breed. Everyone has goals to reach in life whether it is receiving a red coat to serving on the junior board or maybe it is winning Grand Champion Female at a national show. You could have the goal of raising your own herd of cattle. It doesn’t matter what your goal is just that you catch the lights that help you reach that goal. “We cannot fully appreciate the light without the shadows. We have to be thrown off balance to find out footing. It is better to jump than fall.” Life’s challenges along the way could be your yellow or red light that you needed to find your footing to reach your greenlight. Make your goals, make your plans, embrace the good and bad. It is all part
of life. McConaughey says life is our resume and our story to tell. Live in the way that you want to look back on the life you have. Another piece of advice that I feel is relevant to the Shorthorn members is begin with the end in mind. Figure out your goals, what you want to accomplish in the end. And work to achieve that while living your life. As we are getting closer to the National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference, junior members will be setting their goals for the week. Maybe you want to win the speech contest, run for the board, get a scholarship, or win a show. I highly recommend the audiobook, Kindle book or paper book - whatever is your preference. McConaughey’s outlook on life is different than your typical memoir or personal growth book. Even if you don’t agree with him his views or each portion, it was engaging and I couldn’t stop listening. It made me think about my life and the ‘lights’ that made a difference for where I am now. I want to challenge you to set some goals whether they are short or long term, small or big goals. Set some and make them happen. That is your greenlight. =
Top 8 favorite bumperstickers in Greenlights (because I couldn’t pick just 5) 1. Words are momentary, intent is momentous. 2. The best way to teach is the way that is most understood. 2. I’ll take a little common sense with that knowledge. 3. Common sense is like money and healthy, once you have it, you have to work to keep it. 4. Sometimes which choice you make is not as important as making a choice and committing to it. 5. Great leaders are not always in front. They also know who to follow. 6. Some people look for an excuse to DO. Others look for an excuse NOT to. 7. The arrow doesn’t seek the target, the target draws the arrow. 8. Life. Like Architecture, is a verb. If designed well, it works. It’s beautiful. And it needs no directions. It needs maintenance.

As most of you know the 2022 National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference is right around the corner! The Junior Board could not be more excited to see you all in Kansas City, Missouri, this summer for a week that will be “Out of this World!” The National Junior Shorthorn Show has been voted most enjoyable junior nationals for two consecutive years by the rest of the industry and we couldn’t have done it without the amazing families that participate each year! The entry deadline is May 1st, and the late entry deadline is May 15th. I would like to remind everyone that for cow/ calf pairs to be shown at the NJSS, the calf must be registered before May 1st as well. We had a record number of entries last year at the 2021 NJSS and we would love to repeat the same success this year! If you have any questions regarding entries, please don’t hesitate to contact the ASA office, Shelby or any junior board member.

Sierra 2021-22 Alternate National Betts Shorthorn Lassie Queen
Shorthorn Country Alt. National Queen Recap and Application Due Date Reminder Serving as the Alternate National Shorthorn Lassie Queen has been such a great opportunity. I have represented the Shorthorn Breed by attending various shows, sales, meetings, and social events. I would like to thank my grandparents; Bob and Ladonna Workman, my parents; Corey and Becky Betts, and my sister; Alyssa Betts for being by my side and supporting me every step of the way. I couldn’t have done it without them! I would also like to thank the Shorthorn Breeders who have supported my reign which allowed me to travel to the Shorthorn events throughout the year. I have enjoyed meeting and talking to new people across the United States. I have also enjoyed working with and getting to know the ASA Staff and Jr. Board. They have been so welcoming and helpful throughout my reign and I am very appreciative. After being crowned in Louisville, Kentucky at Shorthorn Jr. Nationals in June, I started my reign by going to the Ohio State Fair Open and Jr. Show in Columbus, Ohio. After that, I attended the State Fair of West Virginia Open Northeast Region Points Show in Lewisburg, West Virginia. Then I headed to the Ohio Shorthorn Breeders

Saturday, February 26, 2022 WCC Cow Palace Anita, Iowa Auctioneer: Mark Venteicher Sale Management: Studer Shorthorns by: Darryl Rahn
A pleasant day greeted those in attendance for this year’s Studer/Gilman bull sale. The bulls offered were of the highest quality with individuals that will work in a variety of breeding programs. Several of these bulls were members of groups in the pen show at the recent Cattleman’s Congress in Oklahoma City. They had many friends at that show and it was evident with their acceptance in the sale. Congratulations to all involved in the presentation of a quality event. $33,500 - Lot 39 - ShorthornPlus Bull - Gilman’s Liberty Valance 25J. A red, polled February 10, 2021 son of Leveldale Cowboy Up 820F and out of Gilman’s
Durham 5F. This was a tremendous young bull and had a ton of interest prior to the sale. He is one that has the structure and body mass that all want. He had an IMF scan of 6.22 which is off the charts for that category. He will be a breed improver. Offered by Gilman Shorthorns and purchased by Bowman Superior Genetics of Greens Fork, Indiana. $21,000 - Lot 1 - Bull - Semen Interests Studer’s Hammer Time 43H. A red, polled February 2020 son of Leveldale Rockford 838F and out of Muridale Sonya 119A. This is a tremendous bull. This massive two year old has already had a successful show career and is now ready to add superior structure and style to his offspring. His confirmation and look go with cat like movement when he walks. Those breeders that purchased semen interests will reap the benefits of his genetics. Offered by Studer Shorthorns and purchased by The Hammer Time Group. $6,000 - Lot 20 - Bull - Gilman’s Stagecoach 35J ET. A red, polled February 19, 2021 son of Byland Soggy Dog 7TM73 and out of Gilman’s Robin 512C. This is a top son of the popular Soggy Dog that had a lot of friends. He was a member of the Reserve Champion Pen of Three at the
Cattleman’s Congress. His overall structure and thickness were admired by all. He can add the performance that everyone wants in their herd. Offered by Gilman’s and purchased by Cedar Lane Farm of Cedarville, Ohio. $5,500 - Lot 41 - ShorthornPlus Bull - Gilman’s Chisum K5J. A roan, polled March 3, 2021 son of Leveldale Cowboy Up 820F and out of JSF Blue Belle 86F. This was another top Plus bull in this sale. He is big hipped and long bodied. A huge crowd gathered in the Loving Farms Sale facility for this year’s sale. On offer was a tremendous set of bulls that are backed with breed leading numbers in a vast array of categories. The Loving firm has a great feed efficiency data program that spells out how the progeny of these bulls will perform in the feedlot. It is just another great tool that the Lovings present to their buyers. News & Notes Farewells Diane Morgan passed away February 14th, 2022 after a short illness at the age of 89 surrounded by her family at home. Diane was born January 1933, in Brea, California to Lester and Alice (Cone) Dillinger joining her siblings Lester (Bud) and Sharon. She grew up in various cities within the inland empire of Southern California where she cultured and developed a passion for beef cattle. She was encouraged by her mother to attend Fullerton Union High School where she became one of the first female students to enter their Vocational Agricultural Program. She graduated from Fullerton Union High School in 1950. She purchased her first Shorthorn heifer from William Anderson of West Liberty, IA and was a devoted proponent of the breed ever since. Diane would purchase and exhibit her cattle across the western U.S. Her adventures traveling with her cattle on a railroad box car were recently featured in the book titled “Box Car Boys” by Ronald F. Eustice. She was fearless in traveling from the west coast to the Midwest to purchase cattle that were competitive. She often moved her
kids throughout the western U.S. as she worked for large cattle ranches as their livestock fitter and was a frequent sight in many Grand Champion photos. Once her children were old enough to start showing, she helped them with their various FFA and 4-H beef projects. This continued her lifelong commitment to youth agricultural programs. Through these youth programs she would help the kids that came from difficult backgrounds to instill the important lessons of work ethic, business, leadership, and the livestock industry. Many of these children have grown into successful business owners and credit their success to the lessons they learned from Diane. Her family grew from the unofficial adoption of these children. Her children and grandchildren often describe these unofficially adopted kids as their brothers and sisters. Diane always joked she was the oldest 4-H member. She volunteered her time, knowledge and expertise as an advisor and group leader. She wanted her members to grow and develop through the hard work, dedication, and practice they put into their projects and reinvest for their future endeavors. Once she settled in Burns, OR, she would continue to spend her time helping young men and women with their ag projects and cooking lunches for the ranch crew. She enjoyed making American Shorthorn Association

lunches for the ranch crew, truck drivers and friends that stopped by as it gave her a sense of purpose and contribution to those that continued the legacy of her Shorthorns. She was an exceptional cook, and her lunches were famous to all those that had the opportunity to join in. Diane is survived by her children: Diane Molt, Morgan (Molt) Strang, William “Bill” Molt, and Louie (Melodi Kaiser) Molt of Burns, OR. Her much loved grandchildren Margaret Strang of Olathe, KS, Melissa (Josh) Ward of Burns, OR, Christine (Jared) Anderson of McMinnville, OR, Cameron Molt of Burns, OR, Keaton Molt of Twin Falls, ID and Mason Daniel Shepherd of Tremonton, UT. There are eight great-grandchildren: Eli, Noah, Finley, Daphne, Cyprus, Florance, Mikey and Dax. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Alice, and her siblings Bud and Sharon. Diane will be greatly missed by her family, friends and her cows. At her request no services will be held. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Shorthorn Youth Development Fund, American Junior Shorthorn Association, 7607 NW Prairie View Road, Kansas City, MO 64151. =
