Three things I like about myself and why: 1. I like that I am a hard worker. I worked hard to get my masters, I work hard to be successful at my job, I work hard to stay fit and most importantly I work hard to always be there for the people I love. 2. I like that I am confident and not afraid to be myself, always. There are people in this world, ready and willing to knock you down and judge you. Without self confidence you can easily lose sight of your self worth. 3. I like that at this stage in my life, I am exactly where I intended to be. Happy, Healthy, Loved.

OMG Moment:

On Ariapita Avenue, right where we met, my boyfriend (now husband) stopped the vehicle we were in, complaining of a strange noise. He got out of the car and motioned me out to see what the problem was. As I stepped out, he was down on one knee and a diamond ring in box was resting on the tyre. OMG!

Know when it’s

okay to kiss

Step 1 - Social kisses only for strangers

Kiss people you are being introduced to only if you are introduced in a social environment, like a party or at a bar, and only if the person introducing you two knows both of you well. Otherwise, a handshake is usually appropriate.

Step 6 - Don’t reject a social kiss

Accept another person’s social kiss. Rejection is considered extremely rude. Pucker up!

Step 2 - Consider colleagues

Consider factors like level of familiarity and profession when kissing colleagues. A kiss in the boardroom would be inappropriate in most businesses, but is common in the fashion and theatre worlds.

Step 3 - Let others lead

Let the other person take the lead if you’re not sure if kissing is appropriate. Although it’s becoming more common, it’s still not right in all circles.

Step 4 - Signal your intent

Be clear of your intention when going in for the social kiss so the receiver is sure of the gesture and can react appropriately.

Step 5 - Right turn

Begin kissing the right cheek of the receiver or offer your own right cheek to them if they go in for the kiss first.

Tip – Be prepared to change direction at the last minute, though, in case of a mix-up.

Be romantic without being cheesy There’s a fine line between being a hopeless romantic and just being hopeless. These tips will help keep you on this side of cheesy.

Don’t compare their lips to rubies or their eyes to diamonds; just tell them honestly why you love them.

Step 1 - Know your audience

Tip – If you write them a love poem, make sure it doesn’t rhyme.

Step 2 - Avoid cliches

Step 5 - Treat them like a grown-up

Know your partner’s tastes, especially when it comes to public displays of affection. What’s hopelessly romantic to one person is mortifyingly cheesy to another.

Stay far from cliches. If your romantic gesture is a staple of bodice-ripping novels and bad rom-coms, it’s probably more cheesy than romantic.

Step 3 - Don’t write a song

Unless you’re a professional singer/songwriter, don’t write your love a song. Insipid lyrics, out-oftune singing, one-note guitar strumming etc. They haven’t got time for the cheese.

Step 4 - Put your love in words

Do try your hand at writing your sweetie a love letter -- on real paper. To make it romantic without being cheesy, keep it simple and straightforward.

When it comes to gifts, treat your lover like a grownup. If the present is something a five-year-old would enjoy, it’s cheesy, not romantic.

Step 6 - Do something nice

A pleasant and thoughtful act done for them makes their day a little brighter or their life a little easier. Sometimes, just being kind is the most romantic gesture of all.

When I shower I always talk to myself like if I’m going to rule the world. It is so much fun.

I’m sad

I’ve been through a lot for the past two years. I break up with my girlfriend. My cousin dies. A friend of mine dies. My aunty dies! My best friend turns into an enemy... the people in my life are just slowly drifting away from me... I don’t hate my life or anything, I’m just sad.

She annoys me

So-called ‘homie’ I have this friend who I introduced my girlfriend to about a year ago. We usually hang out on weekends and we are very close. Last Saturday I went out with my family but my girlfriend had to work so she didn’t go. I spoke to my friend earlier that day and I told him I was out with the family. He then went behind my back and called my girlfriend and picked her up at a sports bar where she was liming with co-workers. When I called her after dropping my family home, ready to pick her up, she had left with my friend for his sister’s house. In a rage went to the house wanting to

We’re still living with his mom It really is depressing. In our culture it’s okay when you are staying with your parents, but this has given me too much stress and unease over the years. We’re trying our best to work harder and earn more so one day we can move our family out for good. We’re still subject to his mother’s rules and all. It’s just tiring. We’re so old yet relatives and even his siblings treat us like we’re still kids. I hope we can move out.

I think I saw a ghost My girlfriend and I were on our way home from dinner late one night. While driving and talking to her I noticed a woman sitting in a meditating position at the side of the road. I was driving really slow so while passing I got a good view of the woman. She was wearing a striped white and pink top and her head was bent so I couldn’t see her face. I turned my car around and went to a nearby house and alerted the owner. We both stood outside the car in front of his house and looked back but the woman was nowhere to be seen. It was scary and I’m a bit confused.

know what was going on and why did he pick her up. My girlfriend and I argued and I then left to spend time with my brother. I got home at about 4 a.m. just a few minutes after my girlfriend. I then called my friend and let out all my feelings saying I found it very suspicious, his connection with my girlfriend. My friend tried to convince me that he was just being there because she needed transport and it was late. I am not sure if being suspicious is a good or bad thing. Now it is affecting my friendship with “My Homie”.

I really don’t like one of my friends. She lives really close to me so she comes over a lot. Sometimes, when she knocks my door, I pretend that I’m not at home. She’s annoying. All I want is for her to stop bothering me. But I feel guilty too.

I’m a weeper I cry when I watch movies. I am ashamed of going to the movies because people looks at me like I’m weird. I think I am geeky for crying but I just love to cry.

Why, why, why? Why do I miss you? Did we really have a connection or was I fooling myself? Did you ever care? If I’m asking these questions then I should know. And yet I miss your face and laugh. I can almost cry thinking of it. The beard you grow when you have a lazy phase… Perhaps I thought you were a challenge. Misunderstood? I dunno. I miss those eyes, framed by slightly crooked glasses. And that smile… I almost wish I’d never met you because the pain of missing you isn’t going away no matter what I do or how hard I try.

Emiliana Osteria Italiana Chef Giuliano Fuochi is a survivor who just happens to be one amazing chef! Born in Parma Salsomaggiore in Tereme, Italy, Chef Giuliano began cooking in 1977, driven by his passion for making people smile through food. While he has worked with some of the world’s best chefs in Switzerland, England, France and Germany, he has retained a nonintimidating and family friendly approach to food – once you are a customer in his restaurant, you are treated like family! A cooking prodigy, Giuliano successfully opened his first restaurant in 1976 in Italy, aptly called Parma Restaurant, (named after the town where it was located). The travelling bug soon kicked in however, and sent him on our shores where he began Trattoria Giuliano restaurant on Charlotte Street in Port of Spain. There he began his legacy of good food and good times, gaining a reputation for holding the hands of his customers as he walked them down a culinary adventure in Italian cuisine. Today, Chef Giuliano is a true survivor. He had to give up cooking several years ago due to a battle with cancer which he

has won. Some would think that after this life challenge, the man would retire but with true Italian grace, he has made a comeback and rekindled his passion for delighting people with food by opening the doors of Emiliana Osteria on Longden Street in Port of Spain. What’s his hallmark? In typical Italian style, Chef Giuliano personally ensures each guest leaves with a greater appreciation for Italian food and wine. He ensures that no dish leaves the kitchen without his final approval and after your meal it is not uncommon for him to personally introduce you to a taste of Grappa or Limoncello drinks. We encourage you to visit the restaurant for a truly authentic experience. Our OMG Moment at the Osteria: The pizzas are just mouthwatering and affordable (we were really surprised when we saw the bill)! Photography and Story Stephen Doobal

Twenty-four-year-old Umi Marcano emerged on the local music scene five years ago. In February 2007, at the age of 19, he won the second Synergy TV’s Soca Star competition. Soon after, he launched his first hit song and music video, “Move That Body”. And if you did not know him as a Synergy Soca Star you took notice of him in his well done video, dressed in school clothes, blue shirt and khaki pants and doing some impressive dance routines. Since then Umi has had several successes. One of his major accomplishments was being part of the HD Family and performing with Machel Montano all over the world. He says that was an amazing experience. So with all that momentum and success he was having, what happened? Why is he no longer with the HD Family? Umi says he made one of the biggest mistakes of his career. He took the advice and encouragement of his then manager to move on from HD to supposedly bigger and better things and so with naive enthusiasm he penned a letter to HD saying he was leaving the team. However, it was not too long before he realised it was a bad mistake. He says, “It was a bad, bad, mad scene. I was performing in Toronto and when I demanded to be paid by my then manager I was put out of the house we were staying at”.

Umi realised that this manager wasn’t who he made himself out to be. He was someone whom he entrusted his entire career with – all bookings, PR and total management – everything. When this happened, he was lost because a manager is such an integral and vital part of an artist’s professional life. He stresses it is vitally important that an artist choose a manager or management team carefully. We ask Umi if he had burned bridges with the HD Family. He says, “No, I don’t think so, there is no malice there, we had a strong relationship, I really appreciated all I did and learned there. I regret what happened but I need to own up and learn from my mistakes, so right now I am looking for a good manager. I have had several offers, I have approached some, so I need to decide, because good management is a big part of your success, because then you can concentrate on the music and the manager will get you and the music out there.” At the moment Umi is busy writing. He is in Rama Studios producing tracks with John Marc. When are we going to hear new stuff from Umi? “Well boy,” he says, “I training, I put on meh boxing gloves and I have been training to build my strength and endurance for this coming Carnival season. We have three great songs in the pot now, with an Island Pop beat. We will be releasing them soon. So everybody look out for that. I never could figure out how Machel does it. He could do four shows in a day. The type of strength and endurance yuh need to do that yuh have to work really hard and I am doing my boxing training now, not to fight but to build endurance and give a great performance.” This young entertainer attended Richmond Street Boys Primary School, St Dominic Savio College and St James

Secondary. He was always a dancer and performer in school. He really loved dancing, he says. We asked if he dances much now. He laughs and says, “All that coming back with the rebranding boy, all that coming back. I don’t know what happened. I used to like to dance plenty, but I stopped dancing for some reason. I suppose the business take over and I just don’t have time to practice. At St James Sec, “Squid” from School of Dance who is a dancer with Swappi, he was one of meh dance partners at school, so when we had school concerts from the time they hear we coming on stage the entire school run up to the stage and screaming, it was great. At school people used to just stop me in the corridors and ask me to sing. That is how I always was a singer, a dancer. I like to entertain on the whole, that is really how it started”. After school Umi worked at a karaoke bar, selecting songs for people to sing but eventually ended up on stage singing for the crowd. He remembers auditioning for Digicel Rising Stars and one of the judges stopping him to say “Umi, yuh good but yuh not great… ‘thank you very much. I said alright, cool, I would remember that’. Then I went to Synergy Soca Stars and I demolish it and I was in Party Flavour too. I got an award for the best original song.” What doesn’t he like? He says, “I don’t like dogs, cats, snakes and bad breath, I can’t stand bad breath. When people have dogs in their yard, I prefer to stay out. I came really close to being bitten by a dog and recently I had to drop a brick on a huge snake crawling up my steps. I saw it and there was nothing around but that brick to stop it with. I drop the brick on it and it still got away. I should ah play ah Play Whe that morning. In terms of people, I doh like bullies, people who have the

upper hand and take advantage of it, especially in this soca industry. That is why it so hard to make it or move in this industry”. Asked if these bullies in the industry can make or break an artist? Umi says, “They can’t make or break an artist, because at the end of the day, God give you your talent so it is up to you to put it out there. If God want you to succeed, you will succeed, but these bullies can make it very difficult for you.” Umi is the father of a three-year-old daughter, Jertoy Kela Marcano, and has another child on the way. His girlfriend is eight months pregnant. He says, “My happy time is being with them. Jertoy is already singing, dancing, modelling and looking like an entertainer”. The rest of his time is spent in the “Rama” (Rama Studios). That is his other family. “Yuh see, Kernal Robert he always have my back and I am grateful for that support.” He says “In the next 10-year stretch, going down here, I see myself as the next king of the land. I just putting down the work now. I could see that. I want to redefine and fine tune what I put out there. I feel I have to give much thanks and appreciation to my father Kenneth Marcano, Lady Montano (Machel’s mother), Johann Seaton of Madmen productions and each and every fan I have out there. I love them.” Umi’s OMG moment came when he was with the HD crew performing in Barbados. “I came on right after Busy Signal. The pyrotechnics just went off and it left a kind of dust on the stage plus there was a drizzle. I jumped up into my hot movement, landed and slipped. I ended up with a level three groin strain. I was down for like three months after that, I was like, oh my gosh. I had to come back home …pain!”

HOW

TO’S

Burn the most calories Not all exercise is created equal: the best activities for calorie-burning are aerobic and sustained.

Warning – Always consult a physician before attempting to do any exercise or exercise plan.

Go running

Go on a run. Keep up an 8.5 mile per hour pace and you’ll burn over 800 calories per hour.

Tip – All of our calories-burned measurements are for a 155-pound person over one hour. If you weigh more, you’ll burn more; if you weigh less, you’ll burn fewer. Cycle

Ride a bike, stationary or road. It’s relaxing and burns 1,126 calories if you keep up a 20 miles-per-hour pace.

Swim

Dive in and swim a few laps. It’s a little less precise, but keep up a moderate pace and you’ll drop around 700 calories.

Box or spar

Boxing is a great way to relieve stress and practice self-defence. It’ll also melt 800 calories.

Play racquetball or a similar sport

If you’re the white-collar type, a game of racquetball will give you the chance to burn 700 calories and make Sampson from accounting look like a fool.

Row

Row a boat, or a stationary machine if you don’t have one: 600 calories and you get to sit the whole time.

Jump rope

Jump rope. Sure, it can get a little boring, but 844 calories an hour is no joke, and outside of running, it’s the cheapest activity possible.

Rubee Hannah Rahaman Henna Artist

Meet the Rubee Hannah Rahaman, the 22-yearold henna artist who has turned her gift and passion into a popular service, adorning the bodies of women from all walks of life. Rubee says the ancient art fascinated her since schooldays. The designs a teacher did for girls at her school intrigued her and soon enough she picked up a henna cone and started doing freestyle designs on her friends. “To my surprise, they all loved it!” she says. The support she got from her family and friends fuelled her decision to take it seriously. In 2008, she began advertising her services through Facebook. “I created a group that showcased my work. My fans did not only include family and friends but potential customers who admired my work and began to seek appointments. My Henna business began to flourish under the name ‘Henna By Hannah.’”

In 2011 she took her art to the next level by going to London to study with Ash Kumar, the world famous henna artist. He has worked with Bollywood and Hollywood stars like Ashwairya Rai, Shah Rukh Khan, Madonna and Julia Roberts and is in the Guinness Book of Records as the fastest henna artist for 2001 and 2003. “It was the experience of a lifetime,” she says. On her return Trinidad as a qualified henna artist Rubee decided to make it her full time job. “Many opportunities kept opening up for my services as word of me being an Ash Kumartrained henna artist spread like wildfire.” She has her own Henna By Hannah products on the market: henna paste, henna oil and gel glitters. “Henna is a blessed work of art that I absolutely cherish and will continue to pursue. I love to do free hand designs as I get my inspiration from everything I see and I try to give each client a look that suits them and something they will value.” The Henna By Hannah Fashion Boutique will soon be opening and services also include make-up application for weddings, other functions and carnival, threading (Indian technique for hair removal), lash and brow tinting. Cyrus and her bulldog Ziggy have been in Philadelphia, where fiance Liam Hemsworth is shooting the espionage thriller Paranoia. According to RadarOnline, she’s been annoying Liam by spending all day and night going out on the town — and wanting Liam to come with her, even when he’s tired after a day on the set. Also, Ziggy snores. But that actually sounds more cute than annoying. Also, according to Miley’s tweets, she’s been spending time in the recording studio.

Police, the fire department and a rescue squad all showed up at Miley Cyrus’ house in Los Angeles, responding to a 911 call recently.

Lindsay Lohan was extremely hesitant to shoot a steamy sex scene for her new movie The Canyons last week but she quickly changed her mind ... after the crew fulfilled an extremely unusual request. Sources connected with production tell TMZ the scene required Lindsay to go topless -- but she was so

uncomfortable with the idea of baring her bosom in front of the set’s 10-man crew, she asked them to strip down with her ... to their boxers. The crew was hesitant at first -but according to sources, they eventually obliged, stripping down and shooting the entire scene in their skivvies ... and it all went off without a hitch. You’d think Lindsay would be used to the idea of baring her lady bits -- she posed nude in one of the most widely-viewed Playboy issues of all time.

‘Dabangg 2’ for Christmas release, ‘Sher Khan’ in 2013 Salman Khan’s Dabangg 2 is almost complete and will be released before Christmas this year, confirms Arbaaz Khan. Also, his other brother Sohail Khan’s film Sher Khan is expected to be released at Eid next year. Salman Khan fanatics just can’t wait to see Dabangg 2 – the sequel to his 2010 blockbuster Dabangg. The new film is being directed by Salman’s brother Arbaaz Khan and will retain most of its earlier star cast including Salman, Sonakshi Sinha and Vinod Khanna. This time around though, Salman will be fighting a bigger villain played by Prakash Raj of Wanted and Singham fame. Salman is currently busy promoting Ek Tha Tiger, his Yash Raj film with

Katrina Kaif. Once the Kat-Sallu star is released, he will join hands with his director brother Arbaaz for Dabangg 2. “Well for all the Chulbul Pandey fans… ‘Dabangg’ 2 is almost 60 per cent complete, we resume shooting after the promotion and release of ‘Ek Tha Tiger’. Dabangg 2 is slated for an end-of-the-year Christmas release… 21st Dec 2012 ,” tweeted Arbaaz. We also heard that while Salman is gearing up for his much-awaited 2012 releases, he is also preparing for his mandatory Eid blockbuster next year! In fact, Salman wants his brother Sohail Khan’s Sher Khan to be an Eid outing. “Eid 2013 is really cutting it close. But I am definitely going to make an effort to make it for Eid next year. I hope to finish the final draft of the script by August and then quickly assemble the cast and crew. Inshallah, we roll in November and release for Eid,” confirmed Sohail in an interview.
