Three things you like about yourself and why. One would have to be my personality and my ability to be cool with everyone. I like meeting and being around new people. Two is that I am very determined. Once I set my mind to a goal, it gets done. Three is my good looks. Because of that I get a lot of attention and opportunities. My OMG moment happened one morning this week when a car was headed straight for me as I was crossing the street and I was able to react quick enough to avoid it.

Make your BOYFRIEND’s

parents like you! Step 1 - Do your homework

Quiz your boyfriend. Are his parents liberal or conservative? Religious or agnostic? What are their hobbies? Did they take a recent trip?

Tip - The more you know, the better you’ll be able to make pleasant chit-chat and avoid conversational minefields. Step 2 - Dress conservatively

Err on the conservative side with your clothing. You shouldn’t feel like you have to lose your style entirely, but avoid midriff blouses, low-low riders, stilettos, and anything skin tight.

Step 3 - Tone down makeup

Go easy on the makeup.

Tip - Wear clear gloss or neutral-coloured lipstick. You don’t want his folks to be reluctant to get close to you for fear of greasy lipstick stains. Step 4 - Bring a gift

Walk with a present. You can’t go wrong with a bouquet of flowers. Hydrangeas, mums, sweetheart roses, and lilies will stay fresh for several days.

Tip - If you’re in it to win it, send the flowers to his mother a few days before the get-together with a card saying

you’re looking forward to meeting her. It’s sucking up, but it works. Step 5 - Pitch in

Make yourself useful. No one likes a guest who sits around waiting to be served. The more you help, the more his family will see you as part of the gang.

Step 6 - Don’t correct or criticiSe

Don’t embarrass your boyfriend – it’s the fastest way to make an enemy of his adoring mom. In fact, slip in some compliments.

Step 7 - Send a thankyou note

Send a note saying thanks. Oldfashioned? Yes. But very impressive.

Foster trust

in relationships Step 1 Extend trust

Signal that you are trusting by unilaterally extending your trust to the other person. Handshakes and other forms of social touching promote trust.

Step 2 - Make the other person happy

Focus on the other person’s happiness. Happiness fosters trust and this fosters more happiness.

Step 3 - Oneon-one

Engage in face-to-face interactions whenever possible.

Step 4 Participate in social bonding

Take part in activities that promote social bonding. Some neuroscientists believe that the ability to trust in humans has a biochemical basis.

Friends?

What’s up with guys not wanting to be “just friends”? Friendship is lovely. It kinda makes me think there was no friendship to begin with.…

Back to life

back to reality! Ah yes, although I’m working as usual, the summer for me has come to a close due to me going back to COSTAATT on evenings three days a week and working in the morning from Monday to Friday. So it’s time to go back… back to the hustle and bustle of working and going to classes. With regular school opening again it will be more hectic transportationwise and more. I hope COSTAATT goes well and hope that there is a lot in store for me this semester. So it is time to strap up and face life and reality all over again

Embarrassed

to death

My ex-girlfriend used to like it when I’d wear underwear for her. She said that it made her feel that I would do anything for her. Unfortunately, I let her take some pictures of me in some embarrassing poses. She has been showing lots of people those pictures because I cheated on her.

Hmmm… Perfect!

Felt good with you today. Haven’t felt this way in a long time. I don’t know where we stand…but I’m cool with it. I’m just living in the moment. I just love the way you look at me. We could talk about anything and not feel uncomfortable….Wish this feeling could last forever.

My morning 5k makes me feel

alive I love that I am a better runner in my mid-thirties than I ever was before and that I do it just for me! Running is the best act of self-love I participate in on a regular basis. It makes me a better person.

My other half You mean everything to me.... you are the first thing I think of when I wake up, and my last thought before I go to bed. You smile at me in my dreams. Do you realise what you are to me? What you’re always going to be? You are the love of my life... everyone else will always be second best. There will never be another you. Ever since the first time you held my hand I’ve wanted nothing more than for you to hold it forever...I’m deeply in love with you...

Hard Rock

Restaurant & Bar St Helena

OMG crew had the extreme pleasure of meeting owner Yodhan Ramsingh of The Hard Rock Restaurant and Bar in St Helena, Piarco. Hard Rock is a 20-year-old institution in the now bustling community. It attracts a mature crowd who come regularly to enjoy lunch and dinner. They choose from ice cold drinks of every kind, from exotic cocktails to an extensive selection of beers. Mr Ramsingh once had a liquor mart but could not sell alcoholic drinks to customers, so he created a space for his friends to join him for drinks. Soon enough one friend invited another, and then another and so his clientele grew. He then added food to the lime and the place blossomed into a full service restaurant with an extensive menu. You will see the Hard Rock sign just about two buildings on the left before the St Helena Junction. There is a small, unassuming entrance, but when you pull open the door and enter you walk into space that radiates a rustic homely Englishpub atmosphere. There is also a large car park for your convenience opposite the restaurant. The owner treated us to some of his signature dishes and we are happy to report that the food was excellent. His grilled pork chops were not only very tasty and well seasoned, they were tender and juicy. The fries were crisp and also had their own unique flavour. We also had the grilled king fish, perfectly done – another winner. We can see why patrons have continued to support this restaurant. The internationalstyle menu is very extensive, ranging from burgers, steak and shrimp to salads and

Atlantic Salmon. Yodhan declared that you cannot have a restaurant in St Helena without some true Trini curry, so they also have a Curry Kitchen with delectable beef, chicken, goat and duck. The daily specials and combinations make Hard Rock Restaurant an excellent choice for the staff of the many aviation businesses in the area. The owner says he has served from the President to government ministers, police officers to business owners. It is a cozy hideout where many people from every part of the country can have a great meal while they network and exchange ideas over drinks. Many big deals have gone down right here, he boasts. Yodhan says, “Quality, price and consistency are what we have been noted for by our customers. We have been able to keep our business running by referrals and that is how I want to build my business in the future, with great service and quality food that will sell itself. I feel that is the best way to build a lasting establishment. I love the food business and I totally love what I do and have built with my family, friends and staff. It is a joy to do this every day.” Yodhan urges takeaway customers to call first and give them a heads-up at 669-0047 or 669-7016. We are also pleased to let you know that one OMG Magazine reader and a friend will be going to lunch at Hard Rock Restaurant. Just like the OMG Magazine page on Facebook and say, “I want Hard Rock Restaurant and Bar.” You will be in with a great chance to win a special treat.

Dexter Jennings has always attempted to marry a folksy Carnivalesque aesthetic with a modern, trendy silhouette, branding his Concept Studios with an inimitable and independent style. With 50 years of nationhood under our belt and just as we as a people are moving from strength to strength, so too is Trinbagonian fashion proving itself, even as a fledgling industry, to be stronger than just pride. Here, fashion designer Jennings affirms his national pride with his 50th Anniversary Resort Wear Collection. He seizes the

opportunity to capitalise on the captivating backdrop of the newly opened National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA) South to make his indelible, and more so southern stamp, on 2012 Independence fashion. With the Fashion Industry Development Committee consolidating the affairs of the local fashion industry, there seems to be a renewed acknowledgment of the impact of fashion on nationbuilding initiatives, economic prosperity and national pride. Fashion begets identity and as we move to our second “50”, fashion will not only brand who we are; it will contribute significantly to our Gross Domestic Product. By the way, Dexter will also be producing his first adult Carnival band for the 2013 season called “Out Ah South”.

How to act if you’re

STOPPED

by the police HOW

TO’S

e l y t s e Fre

RAP

Step 1 - Use familiar rhymes

Start simple, don’t get crazy; who cares if others think you’re lazy? Rhyme cat, hat like you’re five years old, but you’ll still flow hot lava while their rhymes go cold.

Step 2 - Make references

Come on, get a clue. Look at everything that you’ve got around you. Think something’s funny, that it merits your time? Let it ride like Cronkite; give a piece of your mind.

Tip - Maintain a solid knowledge of current events. Stars, sports, polls -- they’re all ripe for comment. Step 3 - Plan ahead

Now you know what to do, Then figure out what you can rhyme to. Be a chess master – 10 moves ahead. If you’re not always planning, your flow will stop dead.

Step 4 - Freestyle freely

Free up rhyme and metre of flow; you’re writing real time, not Dante’s Inferno. Hack your way through verbal thorns and thistles. Forget that guy Webster -- think “fo’ shizzle my nizzle.”

Tip - Throw in similes to be at your best – they can get a crowd buzzing like you kicked a wasp’s nest.

Step 5 - Have some fallbacks

Store a few lines in back of your mind for when you think you’ve gotten off track. You can find some solace when the rapping is on by having go-to’s like “Whatcha think a that, son?”

Step 6 - Practice

Don’t rely on tricks, don’t do it just for kicks; to be a freestyler, sit down and practice.

Step 1 - Relax

Relax. Being nervous, even if you’ve done nothing at all, makes cops suspicious.

Step 2 - Keep your hands on the wheel

If you’re in a car, put your hands in front of you, on the steering wheel. Don’t reach for your licence or registration until you’re asked. Police are trained to assume that everyone has a hidden weapon, so don’t give them reason to believe that you might.

Step 3 - Be quiet

Remember the old adage, “Speak only if spoken to”? Now’s a good time to follow it. Don’t offer excuses or explanations; you may be admitting to something they’re not even pulling you over for!

Tip - Call the person “officer” instead of “sir” or “ma’am.” Surveys show this is the greeting police prefer. Step 4 - Stay put

Stay put. If you get out of a car after being stopped, police assume it’s to attack. The same rule applies when there’s no car involved; if you walk even a few steps away, they assume you’re making a run for it.

Step 5 - Don’t argue

Do not complain or argue. It will never, ever work. Keep things civil — even friendly — and they just may cut you some slack.

Tip - If you have proof of membership of any police organisation in the form of a card keep it in your wallet so the officer can see it when you take out your licence. Just try not to be too obvious about it! Step 6 - Take a ticket graciously

If you get a ticket, simply take it and say “thank you,” as hard as that may be. Being rude can only make trouble for you in the future.

Joshua Lue Chee Kong 24 YEARS OLD, Visual Communicator Joshua received his BFA in Graphic Design with honours from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2010. He subsequently interned at Alfalfa Studio in Soho, New York. He then worked on branding for Cumbe, an African and Dispora Dance School located in Brooklyn, designing the album cover for the Mexican singer Guadeloupe Pineda. While at Alfalfa he was part of the winning team for Best Costume Design for the 2011 AIGA Awards.

Type on Currency Typography Project

Joshua is now back home in Trinidad and works with an advertising agency. He says, “it intrigues me how designing not only expresses one’s own personality but also contributes socially and culturally to one’s environment. But at a certain point I had to re-examine my goals and what I wanted to accomplish in my life. I asked myself, ‘will this make me happy?’ and not necessarily for financial goals. I think being on a small island like Trinidad did not help to feed my creative instincts, and I needed to look outside the box. At SCAD – the Savannah College in Art and Design – my creativity was allowed to develop and mature. Meeting people of different cultures and seeing how they lived opened my mind to a new world of expressions through their art”.

Douen

“Culture plays an important part in my work, as I think design should relate to people and also educate at the same time, something I try to maintain in everything I do. I think growing up I enjoyed listening to tales of folklore, particularly from Trinidad, as they show the intermingling of different cultures to create extraordinary and colourful legends. I also remember being fascinated as a child, living in Cedros, by the intricately designed and elaborate decorations of the tadjahs being pushed into the sea in the Hosay celebrations. What I fantasise about for my future is the restoration to its former glory of Boissiere House near the Queen’s Park Savannah and opening a café where patrons can enjoy excellent freshly brewed coffee and exquisite French pastries while participating in lively intellectual discussions. The best part is also branding the café itself. One can dream!” You can see more of Joshua’s work at the following link www.behance.net/joslue or email him at jlckcreative@gmail.com.

The top ten “Electronic Cash Kings”, as Forbes calls them, earned anywhere from $7 million to $22 million in the past year alone.

And unlike rock bands and pop stars who take home just one-third of gross ticket sales, DJs’ production costs are often extremely minor as they simply require a USB stick, headphones and a laptop.

As Forbes points out, one need only look at the recent activities of the genre’s most prominent practitioners: Last year Skrillex was one of the main attractions at Coachella; last month, Deadmau5 ended up on the cover of Rolling Stone and last week Kaskade

Forbes put together the ranking after looking at recorded music sales, endorsements, merchandise sales, and sourcing Pollstar, RIAA, promoters, managers, lawyers and some of the artistes themselves.

Is there anything creepier than

Nicki Minaj’s new perfume bottle? You know we love Nicki Minaj and think she’s the best thing since cotton candy bubble gum ice cream pie. That being said, her new perfume bottle makes us break out in terror hives. The “Pound the Alarm” singer unveiled her debut fragrance – Pink Friday – recently. It’s a scent which is sold in a torso shaped like Nicki Minaj’s torso… only it’s limbless and it has her face …but without the eyes. What’s not to love about that? We desperately pray we’re wrong, but are those visible nipples on the bottle as well? The wig looks fierce though. We’re not even going to hate on that wig. Of course, just because we think the cyborg vixen scent container is unnerving doesn’t mean everyone agrees; Nicki has been fielding gushing compliments via Twitter literally all day. On the other hand, we can’t shake the feeling that we’re going to wake up in the middle of the night with our Nicki bottle having come to life…with dire consequences. Do you agree? If it helps you decide, keep in mind that Minaj also described the scent as smelling like “like angels playing,” which could be literally anything. Ozone? Jet exhaust? Harp polish? Who wants to buy the upper half of a buxom robot filled with harp polish? Alright, alright. Put down your hands, you pervs.
