YOUTH
Ministry
THE FUTURE of the Church depends on the faith of the youth. According to Pope Francis, the youth must be bearers of hope. But for them to fulfill this role in the Church, it is the duty of the present generation to form them and pass on the faith to them with renewed fervor. The Second Plenary Council of the Philippines considers it the highest priority. Thus, the goal of this ministry is to encourage the youth to learn more about their Catholic faith through evangelization and to engage them in the parish activities. But while the youth ministry ushers the young to a greater participation in the parish, it ultimately predicates the future. The entry point is through Youth Encounter, or YE, a module designed by Fr. Ping Molina in 1971. It is a weekend experience where the young are able to understand more about themselves and the role of faith in their lives. After this experience, they are recruited to become members of youth organizations such as Antioch Youth Community or Youth for Christ. As members, they are invited to render services to the parish through the different ministries such as worship, education and social services. Their engagement prepares them for more challenging roles as adult members of the parish community. n

WHAT IS the meaning of the altar in the Mass? One can’t go far into a church building without noticing the central feature in the sanctuary and that is the altar. It has to be said clearly that the altar is the most significant, most central symbol in any church building. This does not mean that the tabernacle is not that important but in the celebration of the Mass, the center of all liturgical actions is the altar. We should also think of three things altogether: Christ who is the victim of the sacrifice, Christ himself is the priest offering the sacrifice, and Christ himself is the altar of sacrifice. St. John Chrysostom has a remarkable comment about the altar in relation to the celebration of the Eucharist. He said: “The altar is an object of wonder: by nature it is stone, but it is made holy after it receives the Body of Christ.” This is why we bow when we face the altar: it has become Christ; we incense the altar, the altar is Christ himself. The altar, far from being an inanimate object, is now the permanent symbol of the presence of Christ for any Christian community. n
