Holy Lives

October 23-29, 2016

Your will, Lord ONE OF OUR favorite bible passages is “ask and you shall receive.” Time and again, this has been proven ST. JUDE’S true in our life with so many answered prayers and blessings. Recently, however, our faith was tested when my second son took his medical board exams. I knew how difficult the exam would be, so I enrolled him in a formal review program. Medical school was never easy for my son. He struggled all the way to graduation; always in the brink of failing some major subjects. He did not do any better in the review school either, and would constantly rant to me how he would always get low scores in assessment tests. These further diminished his self confidence. I always urged him to pray and to trust God but I knew that he has doubts. Passing the board exams would always be top of our prayer petitions to St. Jude, and during his novena, we would always ask him to intercede for our concern. At one of my son’s early morning rants about how hopeless he felt, I told him to continue praying. At the same time, I told him “Kuya, I’d be lying to you if I’d say that all our prayers were always answered the way we wanted it. Sometimes, God has other plans.” From that point on, our prayers of constantly pestering God to help my son pass his exams became a prayer of surrender. I said, “God, you know our dreams for Jonathan and it would mean a great deal for us if he will pass his exams, but Lord, not our will, but yours, be done.” Your will...to p.3

3 WEEKLY PARISH BULLETIN | Archdiocesan Shrine and Parish of St. Jude Thaddeus, Naga City Your will... from p.2 u A day before the exam, my son texted us that he got his exams venue—St. Jude College! A sudden feeling of unexplainable calm took all our worries away. I texted him back and told him, “Kuya, I truly believe that you will pass, may kakampi tayo dyan sa venue mo, si St. Jude.” During the two weekends of grueling exams, Jonathan did not feel any stress, he was always relaxed and smiling after each exams day. Days later, we got the biggest blessing you can think of. He passed his exam and is now a full-fledged medical doctor. God is indeed good. Thank you, St. Jude, for your powerful intercession. Amen. PARISH Ministries

CLERGY & RELIGIOUS Ministry

THIS MINISTRY is mainly within the jurisdiction of the Clergy and Religious. The Archdiocese has different programs from vocation campaign to seminary formation, from pre-ordination to postordination trainings, from first year of priesthood to retirement. This is also the case of the Religious. However, the Parish and the Laity are also stakeholders. The Parish is the pond and the Laity is the vast ocean or river from where to fish for vocations. Thus, our Parish has the following ministries: 1) vocation ministry—where the young are assisted in discerning their universal vocation to holiness and their specific vocation to religious life or married life. Volunteers are commissioned also to continuously pray for vocations. Another is the Love-Your-Priest Ministry where volunteers are commissioned to pray for the clergy and their different missionary activities. Whenever needed, they are also encouraged to raise funds to support the Archdiocesan Programs in financially supporting the on-going formation of the clergy. n

Social mission of mercy and compassion

THE EXTRAORDINARY Jubilee Year of Mercy is coming to a close. Like taking a last minute ride to Mercyland, our Parish adopts the theme “Social Mission of Mercy and Compassion” to celebrate the Feast of Our Patron, Saint Jude Thaddeus. More often than not, we interpret mercy only from the point of view of the self: “I need mercy.” The theme reminds us that mercy is also a social mission: “I ought to show God’s mercy to others.” Many relate to the Jubilee Year erroneously through self-pity. Reversely, the Holy Father requires us to go out of ourselves and perform corporal and spiritual works of mercy. To ask for mercy is coupled with the duty to be merciful as well. The homilies from our guest preachers are all designed to form our social conscience and direct us to perform concrete acts of mercy to the society. Our parish is composed of families from different walks of life, of individuals with various age brackets, interests and skills. But we are all one in our desire to belong to God’s family. Here are different voices from various vantage points, but common in the desire to unify our Parish Community in the name of mercy and compassion: For me, serving the Parish is our way of extending mercy and compassion to my fellow youth. It is also a good training ground for me not to be selfish, but instead, to be more generous with my time. “Pag maklase po kami, masakiton kami purukawan, pero po pag ma-serve ki St. Jude, bako po masakit magmata”. I also gain more friends and I don’t care where they are coming from; to us we enjoy every single moment spent in the Parish—lanz obias, altar server Kan ginibo po akong coordinator sa kalye mi, naging maray ang pagmati ko ta ang paghuna ko po, para lang sa mga ‘igwa’ ang pagsirbi sa Simbahan. Despite my own struggles as a youth, I keep coming back to St. Jude because I want

to inspire other youth to serve the Parish. I serve at Villa Corazon chapel and I am happy that I was also able to encourage around 18 boys to become altar servers too. I am fortunate to have assisted the priests during Masses. I help train new altar servers; I want to watch them assist the Priests too. I feel that I’m called to priesthood. Kinds of bowing during the Mass

Gallery opens at 8:30am, closes at 7pm

THE ROMAN Catholic Mass celebrates God’s glory not only through words or music, but also gestures. One of the most significant Mass gestures is the bow. A bow is an act of reverence and honor. A simple bow of the head is made when we mention the Holy Trinity, Jesus, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Saint of the day, or even the Saint of the place where Mass is celebrated. The same kind of bow is made by communicants before receiving Holy Communion. The second kind of bow in the Mass is the profound bow, traditionally called the bow of the body. The priest makes the profound bow several times in the liturgy: at start of the Mass, during the gospel proclamation and the preparation of the gifts, etc. The profound bow is also observed during the profession of the creed, upon recalling Christ’s incarnation when we say the words “…and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man.” It is not only in words that we celebrate God’s glory, we also manifest His presence through our bodily gestures at Mass; and one of these getures is the bow. n

Kaya makahulugan an sinabi ni Fr. Ipe sa primerong aldaw kan Novena Mass tungkol sa complacency. Dapat madisturbo ako kan mga pangyayari o kan mga nakapalibot. Magluwas sa sakuyang “I” o comfort zone pasiring sa effort zone, sa mga peripheries, to be the last.—hali sa sarong SJTP lector If the president has his first 100 days, the parish has its own first 100 days. If Duterte promised to eradicate the drugs menace in six months, the parish had torn down the wall of indifference in three months. If the drugs crackdown claimed the lives of 3,500 suspects, the parish re-claimed numerous informal settlers back to the fold. It is a poor juxtaposition, but I cannot help but see the sharp contrast. One claims lives while the other gives life. One is being in power while the other is being with the powerless. One shuns the other embraces. When Glyzelle asked Pope Francis, “Why do children suffer?” The Holy Father said, only when our hearts can ask this question and weep, can we begin to understand. I am seeing a change in the parish—the life giving, the powerlessness, the embracing—because we are becoming a Church learning to weep.— from an SJTP parishioner n Help sustain our WEEKLY PARISH BULLETIN.
