The season of Advent in the new millennium jane marie tria santelices

NO ONE IS really is certain of the time when the season of Advent was first instituted. The oldest available document which mentions Advent, its length and the exercises it entails, is the second book of the History of the Franks by St. Gregory of Tours. In the book, St. Gregory says that St. Perpetuus, who was bishop of Tours about the year 480, had decreed a fast three times a week, from the feast of St. Martin until Christmas. In 567, the second Council of Tours had enjoined the monks to observe the Nativity Fast—fasting from the beginning of December till Christmas. This practice of penance soon extended to the whole forty days, even for the laity. Time flew swift; now, we have Advent.

What has been clear though about Advent since it was first observed by Christians is that it anticipates the coming of Christ from two different perspectives: first, is that Advent is a time of preparation, and second, it entails a series of ecclesiastical Offices intended for this purpose. The season offers the opportunity to share in the ancient longing for the coming of the Messiah, and to be alert for his return.

The name Advent takes root from the Latin word adventus, a direct translation of the Greek word parousia which is commonly used to refer to the Christ’s second coming.

Traditionally, Advent opens the liturgical year and commences on the fourth Sunday before Christmas.

It is observed through the lighting of four candles in the Advent wreath, representing each of the four Sundays of the season.

Fast forward to the new millennium when, in the spirit of globalization and cultural integration, non-Christians have been enjoined to celebrate the season come December, the traditional greeting of “Merry Christmas” has gradually been replaced by the more secular “Happy Holidays,” and the noble symbol of Christmas in the image of infant Jesus has been overshadowed by the jolly, fat, old Santa Claus in his sleigh, overflowing with gifts for good children all over the world. The spirit of Advent has been left to weaken, the Advent wreath candles were set aside for the glittering adornments and blinking lights of the Christmas tree.

Advent has almost been forgotten and the celebration of Christmas has become too commercialized and consumer-driven.

Materialism crept through, leaving Christmas popularly associated solely with gift-giving, reunions, and parties galore. People nowadays have become too preoccupied with satisfying their bodies by acquiring new stuff come Christmastime, while starving their spirits of its true intentions.

It is never too late though. We can go back and touch base on the real meaning of the Advent season: anticipation and hope.

Let us recall, Advent means coming or arrival. The entire season is a preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus the Christ an anticipation of his return.

The message of Advent, even in the new millennium, is celebrating truth about God, His revelation in Christ, whereby all of creation might be reconciled with Him. This is a process in which we are now called to participate and the consummation of which we partake.
