St. Teresa, light of Jesus
ON SUNDAY, September 4, 2016, Pope Francis elevates Blessed Teresa of Kolkata to the order of the Saints. To this great woman, the path to sainthood has been intense and vigorous. It is a story of a great adventure—the tale of her personal response to Christ’s call. FEAST DAYS & Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Macedonia, on August 26, 1910; the youngest child of Nikola and Drane Bojaxhiu. She was only eight when her father died, leaving the family in financial trouble. Despite difficulties at home, Agnes was very active youth in their parish of the Sacred Heart where she got her early religious formation from the Jesuits. At age 18, Agnes left for Ireland to join the Sisters of Loreto. There, she received the name Mary Teresa—after St. Thérèse of Lisieux. A year after, in 1929, she was sent to India. After her first profession of vows in 1931, Sister Teresa was assigned to the Loreto Entally community in Kolkata and taught at St. Mary’s School for girl. In 1937, she made her final profession of vows, in which she said she became the “spouse of Jesus” for “all eternity.” From then on, she was called Mother Teresa.
Holy Lives
While on a train to Darjeeling on September 10, 1946, Mother Teresa received her “inspiration, her call within a call.” She felt stirred, and visions came to her. Jesus summoned her, “Come, be my light.” He revealed to her his pain for the poor and asked her to form a community dedicated to the service of the neglected. It took almost two years before Mother Teresa received the permission to start her new community. On August 17, 1948, she left Loreto, and wearing a white, bluebordered sari, entered the oft-ignored world of the poorest of the poor of Kolkata. She visited homes in the slums, took care of the old and the sick, fed the children and the hungry. Starting with prayer and communion, she went out each day to find and serve Christ among “the unwanted, the unloved, the uncared for.” Later on, she was joined, one by one, by her former students. On October 7, 1950, Mother Teresa’s new congregation, the Order of Missionaries of Charity, was officially established. Less than fifty years since its foundation, her sisters numbered nearly 4,000, serving in 123 countries. The world turned its eyes towards Mother Teresa, her works, and her order. To millions, she was already a living saint. In 1979, she was given the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition and honor of her works. Mother Teresa died on September 5, 1997. The Government of India honored her with a state funeral. She was laid to rest in the Mother House of the Missionaries of Charity. On October 19, 2003, she was beatified by Pope Saint John Paul II. The life of St. Teresa of Kolkata is a brilliant yet humble testament of faith, hope and charity. Jesus called her to be his light. She said yes, and fulfilled her vocation with unwavering fervor and intense luminosity. n

Reaching out the Kolping way THE KOLPING Society Philippines, Inc. (KSPI) in SJTP conducted the Single Parent Outreach Activity on August 29 at the Del Rosario Barangay Hall. The event marked the first year anniversary of Kolping Society in the Parish. Attended by 21 single parents, the outreach activity was the first in a series of interventions that support KSPI’s vision of “families living meaning Christian life and participating in shaping a humane and just

From August 26 to 28, thirty young parishioners participated in the Antioch Weekend Experience (AWE) held at the Edessa Hall. Introduced by Msgr. Rodel M. Cajot when he was pastor of SJTP, the Antioch program has been serving as initiation to the parish youth ministry. Participants of previous Antioch Experiences have grown to active volunteers of the parish, many of which are members of Thaddeus Choir.
Why bless ourselves with Holy Water? MANY OF us would have wondered why we bless ourselves with Holy Water while entering and leaving church. Holy Water is a popular sacramental and religious tradition used to bless oneself. Its use upon entering Church is a reminder of one’s Baptism and a gesture of purifying oneself before approaching the presence of God. When we dip our fingers in the Holy Water and touch our forehead, our heart and shoulders, we purify our minds, our will, and our actions. n
