The power of faith fr. wilmer joseph s. tria

JESUS SHARED to his disciples his vision for the world. It is a world where human lives are considered sacred, where the poor are cared for, where neighbors live peacefully with each other. However, it was difficult for the disciples to visualize such a world. Just like our present world where unspeakable crimes are committed every day, where drugs proliferate, where both criminals and innocent lives are summarily executed, the disciples were overwhelmed by the difficulties they foresee in realizing the vision. Thus, they asked Jesus to increase their faith and grant them the power needed to change the world. Jesus then explains God—to increase our faith, to them that such power not to be overwhelmed by the SUNDAY comes from within. It is the difficulties we encounter, to trust power of faith. Even if it is the power of faith that is found as tiny as a mustard seed, it has the power to within us. We must be generous with our uproot a tree and to move mountains. And time to God, to allow Him to instruct and even if they accomplish great things because inspire us. He is the source of our faith. of the power of faith, they must remain Lastly, the gospel warns us that pride can humble and say: we are unprofitable servants; easily consume us when we feel the power we have done what we were obliged to do. of faith. Thus, even if we faithfully serve The gospel reminds us that all of us are the Lord, even if we have been generous called to share and articulate that vision of with our time, talent and treasure serving Jesus. Basic Ecclesial Community: a mustard seed rene c. malanyaon

Bowing down inside the Church WE BOW down at the Cross when we enter the Church as a gesture of worship and surrender. We worship Jesus who is God crucified on the cross. Worship means “prostrate oneself in homage.” It describes the action of a person bowing down before someone great. It is a sign of total humility and devotion. However, the true essence of worship is not in the outward bowing down but the bowing down of the inner person. The true place of worship and surrender is in our hearts. Jesus says: These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men. (Mt 15:8-9) True worship is a heart-felt response to God’s greatness. It is the adoration of God and complete surrender from the heart. God cares much more about what drives us in our worship than the motions we go through in our worship. Worship is not confined to the walls of a church. It does not only start or end with church services. Rather, it is a life-long bowing down of our hearts before God, adoring Him and surrendering ourselves completely to Him. n

SOCIAL SERVICES FAITH DOES justice. It cannot be faith if it has no power and action to confront unjust social structures. The faith life of the Parish is measured by its social services. Its goal is to ensure that every parishioner puts his or her faith into social action, contributing to the welfare of others, especially the marginalized. One existing social action is the Ministry to the Homebound. This reaches out to

I AM not fond of horror films but the popularity of the Korean film, “Train to Busan” which made even third-graders excited, made me watched it. Watching horror films scares me, but for the first time, it did not! Reflecting on it, why were I not scared? Perhaps, because the film was shot with fluidity and neatness or perhaps my heart is attuned to its theme—family. Amidst the horror wrought by an infection on man and animal, human weaknesses of greed and selfishness are overcame with sacrifice and love. The inherent human spirit of goodness prevails. There is hope! Relating this experience to the Basic Ecclesial Community (BEC) Training for Leaders, which I attended together with parishioners from the different sitios last

September 24 and 25 at the SJTP, made me realized that the BEC can bring humanity together on a journey towards God. It can be the train, not to Busan, but to heaven! Why? The BEC program encourages communion based on the Word of God, with the inspiration of Ina, Our Lady of Penafrancia. It brings together many human differences and draws them into the universality of the Church. For some of us, the program was a re-training because we have already attended similar seminar during the time of the late Msgr. Bob Carpio. Only that this time, devotion to Ina has been emphasized—to Jesus through Mary. The training is part of the 3S (sanctification, stewardship, shepherding) program espoused by SJTP pastor, Basic Ecclesial Community...to p.4

those who are not able to attend the Sunday Mass due to disability or old age. Volunteers are usually Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist who can visit them on Sundays, bring them the Body of Christ and provide them companionship and counsel. Another is the Gilean Ministry designed to take care of persons with disability. Every First Sunday, volunteers assist them to attend the 8am mass, provide them catechesis and food after. Sunday Feeding Ministry is also an existing ministry and is done after the 8am Sunday Mass. The Missionaries of Charity bring the indigent families to Church and sponsors-volunteers provide them with food after the catechesis.

More ministries are to be introduced such as 1) grief & bereavement: provide prayers and consolation when death occurs in the family; 2) st. jude thaddeus charity: provides some material needs of the indigents; 3) kasambahay ministry: provides formation and welfare to Kasambahay; 4) prison ministry: additional support and formation to the existing formation provided by the Archdiocese; 5) training for livelihood: provide trainings for the selfemployed; 7) drug rehabilitation and reintegration; 6) health care. SJTP encourages everyone to be involved in any of these ministries. n

4 WEEKLY PARISH BULLETIN | Archdiocesan Shrine and Parish of St. Jude Thaddeus, Naga City Basic Ecclesial Community...from p.3 u Fr. Wilmer Tria, with Fr. Rex Hidalgo and Fr. Nunilon Bancaso. It was successfully conducted by the Archdiocesan BEC team, with Sis Mercy Del Rosario as facilitator. Three topics were discussed: 1) “What are the strengths and weaknesses of the Parish?” by Bro. Willy Menes; 2) “What is BEC?” given by Bro. Fred Efondo; and 3) “Mary in the Upper Room” by Sis Julma Narvadez. Doors have been opened… doors to maturity, mission and mercy. Identity gives direction which propels a person to go and build the Kingdom of God with the spirit of the good samaritan, thus, giving birth to spirituality. Being a Filipino Catholic, do I carry my Faith in all the aspects of life? From my self to my family, to the parish, to the workplace, to others and to the world—

giving my time, talent, treasure for the good of the community. This is the Basic Ecclesial Team. For the Area Pastoral Council of the Two Hearts of Jesus and Mary, the group have conducted a Prayer Meeting last Tuesday, September 27 at 7pm at our chapel following the format given by the Archdiocesan BEC Team. Under the mantle of Ina, and the aid of of St. Jude Thaddeus and St. Therese of Lisieux, the Prayer Group Leaders have started the preliminary steps to usher in the needed program. The Lectio Divina of the Parish Newsletter for this coming Sunday, Luke 17:5-10 was used for the Reflection. May then the mustard seed grow into a full-grown tree! Amen.
