esearches say that contemporary youth have, in fact, genuine interest in religion, but they feel distant from the institutional Church and her teachings. This may be attributed to the fact that young people sense a disconnect between the lifestyle of their elders and the values and ideals of Christ. Tensions within the family are likely to arise as growing teenagers struggle for identity and independence. Certain factors like miscommunication, confusion, and hurt, among others, tend to separate children from their parents. The Church sees and feels this problem as a challenge of the time. To respond to this call, Antioch ministry recognizes the ever-present need for reconciliation; it stresses on the value of the act of forgiving and seeking forgiveness. The ministry was developed to minister among youth by touching their lives and providing environment where they may experience God’s presence in their context. Through Antioch, young people are given the opportunity to seek and discern God’s

: journeying in faith with the youth that the disciples were first called Christians.” (Acts 11:26)

love in their own lives through community experience with fellow youth. The period of youth is a stage where a person tends to resist religiosity but without rejecting religion itself. It is an age of trying to break away from many things; sometimes it is expressed through rebellion or resistance. Teenagers often go on exploration of their own faith, a period of questioning themselves, moving away from the faith instilled upon them by their parents until they arrive, hopefully, at a faith that they may consider personal. When teenagers encounter, reflect on, and understand their own faith journey, and are able to articulate its meaning to the community, religious education takes place. Once they have discovered God’s gentle hand in their lives, when they meet Jesus as a friend, they can proclaim The Good News in words that are understood by their peers. It is a modern-day Pentecost. The Antioch ministry complements classroom catechesis. While catechesis is educational—with focus on information and

doctrines, Antioch is formative. Through the Antioch experience, the teachings of the Church learned in catechesis become guiding principles towards becoming fully human and following God’s plan. Through prayer and reflection, Antioch provides time and space for young people to sort things out. Antioch ministry was first introduced in sjtp in 2009. Since then, with the help of supportive parishioners, the program has been continuously inspiring youth to be more actively involved in spiritual formation and social action as well. They involve themselves in community and parish services, such as feeding programs, cleanliness drives, music ministry, and children’s catechism, among others. More than 300 young people from within the Parish have undergone the experience so far. On August 2017, the Antioch Weekend Formation in sjtp will be experienced by another—eleventh—batch of young individuals in search of Christ. The Antioch community at sjtp is headed by Charlie Guaves. 4

Sharing devotion to St. Jude with the whole world

T

SJTP Pastor Fr. Wilmer Joseph S. Tria installs parishioners from Sitio Magdalena into the Confraternity of St. Jude, October 2016.

he Parish of St. Jude Thaddeus in Naga City is not just a parish—a Catholic community that has its own church and pastor; furthermore, it is also an Archdiocesan Shrine—a place designated to foster a belief or devotion and is regulated by the local Bishop. The SJTP then, as a shrine, must at all efforts be a locus for fervent belief and devotion to the patron saint of the impossible, St. Jude Thaddeus. As a community, all the parishioners of SJTP are enjoined to fulfill this task of sharing, propagating, and enriching devotion to St. Jude, not just among themselves or within the Parish, but even among those who are from outside the

Parish, from any part of the globe—devotees, pilgrims, visitors, and especially those who are yet to accept in their hearts and spirits the powerful intercession of St. Jude. When SJTP was about to be declared an Ardiocesan Shrine in 2014, one of the requisites was the creation of the Confraternity of St. Jude. The confraternity is essential for the Shrine to serve its sacred purpose. The confraternity is the safekeeper and the nurturer of SJTP as a shrine. It assists in conceptualizing strategies to effectively cultivate and disseminate devotion to St. Jude. Members of the confraternity commit SHARING DEVOTION/next page

to helping the Parish in preparing and implementing activities where St. Jude figures significantly. The confraternity is also in charge of the annual feast day of St. Jude. There are many confraternities all over the world fulfilling its dictionary definition of being “brotherhoods or organizations with a religious or charitable purpose.” As for Confraternities of St. Jude, collectively, their general objective is to make St. Jude known to more people and to spread the devotion among people. What makes the SJTP Confraternity of St. Jude Thaddeus unique is its social dimension, its preferential option for the least, the lost, and the last. In SJTP, the confraternity finds way—with great emphasis—for informal settlers to have access to St. Jude. The promotion of

devotion among them includes distribution of free statuettes and stampitas, nurturing prayer groups, and installing them as members of the confraternity. The Confraternity of St. Jude, by its nature and structure, is probably the largest ministry within SJTP. Its current head is Sis. Agnes Rubio. 4 PARISH FINANCIAL REPORT JULY 1-15, 2017 CASH RECEIPTS
