hen John Paul II first appeared to the people in front of St. Peter’s Basilica as the new Pope, he said: Be not afraid! He gave the Church an assurance: that he will not let any of the sheep entrusted to him by Christ go astray. Thus, there is nothing to fear, since He will be with us till the end of time as Christ’s promised. If these are words of assurance, are you willing to say that to others, that they may also feel Christ? to mercy. st. john chrysostom—

T
he life of Saint John Chrysostom gives us a sense of wonder of what Christian discipleship is, and is itself a revelation that with God all things are possible. This great teacher of the Church, so fluent and so sweet in his words, was given the surname Chrysostom, which means Golden Mouth.

The CHAPELS of SJTP
chapel of the divine mercy:
T
center of faith of the villa sorabella community
he idea of putting up the Divine Mercy Chapel in Villa Sorabella was conceived a year after the celebration of the millennium. In a meeting of the Villa Sorabella Homeowners and Resident Association (vshra) as it used to be called, in August 5, 2001, at the residence of the late couple Dr. Ramon Jr. and Erlinda Prado, the proposal to build the chapel in the open space of the subdivision was discussed. The target was to celebrate the Christmas Eve Mass that year in the said place of worship. By God’s grace and through the benevolence of the homeowners their dream was turned to a reality, under the leadership of Mr. Ernie Abragan the president of the vshra, the first Mass in the village chapel was celebrated on December 24, 2001. It is good to recall that the homeowners long before the chapel were constructed had been meeting together to celebrate the Eucharist at the Prado’s residence. Masses were officiated by the late Msgr. Jose Roberto Z. Carpio, then sjtp pastor. By that time the Area Pastoral Council was not yet organized. The president of the homeowners association served as the quasiArea Pastoral Council Coordinator. In time, when Msgr. Rodel M. Cajot took over the leadership of sjtp, he made it a point that apc’s be organized. Atty. Danilo de la Torre was named the coordinator who worked in tandem with Dr. Eduardo Enojado, then the president of the vshra. At least their roles were more delineated. Chapel activities, pastoral concerns, coordination with the parish regarding liturgical celebration were taken care of by the apc. When typhoon Reming and another equally furious storm hit Bikol region, our chapel was reduced to a heavily damaged and roofless edifice and, therefore, needed repair and reconstruction. Pledges of
donations in cash and in kind came, just so that our Sunday celebration of the Eucharist would not be put to hold. At this time, a new set of officers of the apc was just beginning to take its roots, but were obliged to engage in fundraising activities to support renovation, if not total reconstruction of the chapel. Santacruzan 2007 sa Sorabella was the initial fund drive they ventured into with Bless Arquesa as then the newly elected apc coordinator. Santacruzan 2007 was a para-liturgical ritual featuring Reyna Elena as the finder of the True Cross of Jesus. It was a reenactment of this event in the history of the Church. The matrons of the subdivision were the protagonists during the event which was held inside the chapel before within and after the celebration of the Eucharist in May 217, 2007. Dr. Victoria F. Enojado was Reyna Elena. For several years Santacruzan sa Sorabella was looked forward to by the residents and the neighboring areas. The last Santacruzan was in 2016, when Ms. Melba Vera Cruz was Reyna Elena, who was proposed by Ms. Paciencia Tabinas and Mrs. Pacita Florece in 2014 and 2015, respectively. In the passing of the years, depreciation could not be avoided, it was obvious that the chapel needed repairs, but instead we
decided to have it renovated and expanded. Funds were generated through fundraising activities of various ways: raffle draws, garage sales, bazaars, flea markets and the likes. We even planned to organize “craft market” in the coming days given the time and opportunities. When Fr. Wilmer Joseph Tria came to sjtp as the fourth parish priest, we welcome him in this place of worship just after it was repainted, renovated and expanded. We could be remiss if we don’t claim him as our very own. And that we are proud of him. He himself would recall his childhood memories in this community and even how he got his vocation as he related to us during his first mass here in the chapel, when he became our parish priest. To date, we commit to continue our attendance to the regular 6pm Sunday Mass, be responsive to needs of the chapel and cooperate with the programs and activities in the parochial level. At this time of writing, we are hoping and praying that very soon we could form into smaller groups, praying together, reflecting on the gospel as Basic Ecclesial Communities. We continue to express our faith to Jesus, the Divine Mercy, as we endlessly profess the very short prayer of commitment: “Jesus, King of Mercy, we trust in you.” 4
