The creek, St. Teresa, and Sitio California The CHAPELS of SJTP
Sitio California a small community within Barangay Concepcion Grande. How their sitio was named after the popular state in the u.s. is interesting. The community lies along a kalí or a creek, and this promted residents to suggest to call their place Sitio California—articulating, with humour that’s reflective of resilient life, the name of this sitio by the creek.
They first chapel in Sitio California was established in 1986, during a time when the children of the sitio were being plagued with tipdas (measles) was alarming by the virus infected residence called. The residents held a Perdon procession around the sitio for three consecutive evenings to seek the Lord’s help in getting rid of the epidemic that was claiming the lives of their children. The event allowed them to form a group which would oversee religious activites in the area. Under the leadership of Ruben Buenpacifico, and supported by Nermojina “Mina” Zamora, Letty Samonte, Alberto Lafita, Mila Salvo, and Edessa Refe, the group facilitated the continuity of religious activities in Sitio California until they were able to build a small chapel for their activities, especially the Santakrusan. The original chapel was built of bamboo, wood, and coconut leaves. They called it payag-payag or kubo (hut), which was
constructed next to a dita tree (Alstonia scholaris). Lola Mina led the nightly offering of Latin prayers, and a Mass was celebrated in the chapel once a year, at the culmination of the Santakrusan. There was a year when the chapel was the kubo was destroyed by a typhoon, but the residents fixed it in time for the Santakrusan. When Jesse Robredo ran for the first time as mayor of Naga City in 1988, he visited Sitio California and saw the kubo. He promised to make a better place of prayer for the residents of the sitio by constructing a multipurpose hall that may serve as a chapel. By that time, Leticia Samonte led the facilitation of religious activities, a task which she judiciously performed for nine years. Ms. Samonte was instrumental in requesting then Mayor Robredo for a multipurpose hall which would serve as a chapel. The said structure was approved and completed in 1989.
In 2001, then Barangay Chair Elmer Baldemoro helped in improving the hall by installing grills and a door, which secured the place and eventually converted it into the chapel of Sitio California. In January 2017, the SJTP placed Sitio California under the protection of St. Teresa of Kolkata. The parish also provided the sitio an image of St. Teresa, which they installed in the chapel. This year, Sitio California celebrated its first fiesta, a celebration which they started with nine days of novena with the sisters from the Missionaries of the Poor which St. Teresa herself established. The first fiesta of Sitio California was a testament to unity and cooperation among parishioners from the area as they volunteered for various aspects of the celebration. Sitio California continues to be a community of parishioners who are very active in the life of the local Church. 4
