For many, Christmas is the most awaited day of the year because of so many reasons: for some, perhaps, because of the gifts they are going to receive from friends and loved ones; for some, it is a moment to enjoy with friends; for some, it’s because of the food that will be served during the party; for some, because of loved ones coming home; and for some, because of the cash bonus they are expecting from their employers.

Whatever reasons we have in but is rather a necessary way for us to look mind, we must not forget the real into the very life we have—a SUNDAY reason for our merriment, and necessary way but not the one.

aguinaldo : A Gift of Masses ‘GOING TO THE MISA DE GALLO’ BY CIRILO SALONGA, 1942

O

n December 16 will be the first day of the nine-day Simbang Gabi or Aguinaldo Masses. Churches will be filled up with people then.

Many church-goers will bring with them their wishes, prayers and hopes for better and brighter days ahead. The tradition of celebrating the Novena Masses—from December 16 to 24—before Christmas is said to have originated in the Philippines. This tradition started during the Spanish period, some time during the early 19th century and it even reached Mexican soil through the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade.

A legend says that this practice started during the Spanish Era in the Philippines in one small parish in the countryside composed of about a hundred families. The parish priest during the Advent Season urged his parishioners to offer a Novena of Masses (nine consecutive days) before Christmas as gift to God in exchange for giving His Son to humankind. But the people rejected the parish priest’s suggestion saying that it is almost impossible for them to find time for that since they work in the farm during weekdays. The farmers said that they start early at dawn to the fields in order to avoid the heat of the sun and by about ten or eleven they come home to prepare and take lunch, take a nap, and by three, when the sun would not be so scorching anymore, they resume work again in the fields until evening, but by that time they were already exhausted for a Mass.

With the conditions presented by the parishioners, the Parish Priest insisted that perhaps the “gift masses” can be celebrated before they start on the fields. The farmers gladly agreed. Thus the Church bells start to toll at about 3 in the morning and the priest would go to as far as knocking at the doors of his parishioners just so they can offer a gift of masses for Jesus who shall be born on Christmas day.

From then on, that small parish repeated the practice every year, and neighboring parishes copied the practice until it became a tradition, in the passing of time, in almost all parishes in the Philippines. Today, Aguinaldo Masses are celebrated, not only in parish churches but even in small communities where there is a chapel or church and when a priest is available.

The practice was called Aguinaldo Masses since aguinaldo in Spanish terms means ‘a gift or bonus’—a term referring to the extra pay which generous landlords would give their tenants during the Christmas season in the Philippines. These novena masses also came to be known as Simbang Gabi (Night Masses) because, practically the masses are celebrated when it is still dark. Sometimes people refer to the practice as Misa de Gallo (Mass of the Rooster) since the celebration happens at the time when cocks are crowing early at dawn.

People today look at Simbang Gabi in different perspectives. Some people see it as simply a part of Filipino culture, but some deem the practice as a sacrifice since they have to rise up at an extraordinarily early time, while some take it as an opportunity to ask special favors from God. For many youngsters going to Mass early at dawn is exciting; for them it is fun to Next Page/AGUINALDO

go out early with friends or to do physical exercises after the Mass. In the passing of time many people do not realize that the practice of celebrating the Masses early in the morning was really just to accommodate the time of the farmers in the beginning.

It can be recalled that during the Martial law regime in the Philippines, when curfew hours were observed and people were not allowed to go out of their homes when it was still dark, some churches would celebrate the Aguinaldo masses at nine o’clock in the morning or even at noontime.

In some places today, Aguinaldo Masses are celebrated in the evening, when priests— and venues—are available. But the hour for celebrating the masses is really not so much significant.
