cherishing christmas in my holy land pilgrimage

he first time I learned of the planned pilgrimage to the Holy Land, I did not have a second thought.

Immediately I said, “Yes, I am joining!” To me, it was a rare opportunity that I could not afford to miss. To me, it was ‘now or never’ experience. Actually, the matter of finances also popped into my mind considering the big amount needed for the travel but I took it as a minor problem. I was of the belief that, with God, nothing is indeed impossible!

True enough, when the deadline for the payment of the package tour was nearing, old clients just came to the office to pay the almost forgotten obligation—the attorney’s fees. New clients poured into the office, willing to pay just so their cases would be entrusted to my care. To me, those were signs that God was with me from the very start I answered His call to visit His homeplace. In fact, not only me, but even my husband was able to join the pilgrimage.

The experiences learned and memories we had during the pilgrimage were beyond compare. I will surely treasure them for the rest of my life. The experiences were very different from usual tours. Truly, the lessons learned during the pilgrimage were lifechanging experiences!

Early on in the pilgrimage, I could hardly believe that I have already set foot on those places that played significant role in the life of Jesus. One was the house where the Archangel Gabriel appeared to the Blessed Virgin Mary to announce to her the Good News. Then we visited the place where Jesus, the Messiah, was born. We went to the Jordan River where the Christ was baptized. We entered Nazareth where Jesus grew up. We went to the places— corners and streets and houses—where

He, the Son of God, performed countless miracles, like in Cana where Jesus turned water into wine, and that place where the multiplication of the bread and fish took place.

We visited Mount Olives where Jesus was arrested. We paid reverence at the site of the Calvary where He was crucified and offered his life for us. We have seen many more places with religious significance.

In fact, during the boat ride at the Sea of Galilee, I just felt that tears were rolling down my eyes, realizing that Jesus performed numerous miracles in that place.

Another thing I would never forget in that Pilgrimage was the climbing to the Summit of Mt. Sinai in Egypt. Considering that it was in Mt. Sinai where the ten commandments were given to Moses, I was firm to reach the summit. Of the 34 members of the group, only Fr. Wilmer, Sis. Pachit, Brod Robert, and I, who dared to make the climb. Even my husband discouraged me from going. But I told him, “it’s now or never.” Thus, braving the freezing temperature, the total darkness, and even lack of sleep, the rocky roads, the very steep ravines, the guides who were total strangers, the high risk of falling from a camel on which we were mounted going

up and down Mt. Sinai, the four of us made the journey and—thanks, God—we survived and reached the summit! We were able to return to our hotel, still whole, alive, and unharmed. Praise the Lord!

After I joined that Pilgrimage, celebrating Christmas is no longer the same as before. Having seen and having been to the places important to the life of Jesus, especially concerning His birth, helped me understand better the Word of the Lord.

It helped me understand better what true Christmas is all about.

The Pilgrimage also helped me better relate what the priest was talking about during the homily. Just like the recent Simbang Gabi, Fr. Tria was talking about the distance of the place traveled by Mary so that she could visit her cousin, Elizabeth, after having been told by Angel Gabriel that Elizabeth, who was already old, was sex months pregnant. Since we have gone to the places mentioned by Fr. Tria, I could easily relate and understand what he was saying.

Another good thing about the Pilgrimage we had is that it was timely scheduled, just weeks before the Christmas.

Thus, I considered the Pilgrimage as a sort of a preparation while waiting for the birth of Jesus. 4
