BEYOND WHAT IS REQUIRED
serving god, serving the parish
A
number of students from Ateneo de Naga University Junior High School have been rendering services at the sjtp as a requisite for their Religion class. But the experience, after all, has become more than a course requirement. Let’s read a couple of short reflections by the students and see for ourselves how.
i had great time during the performance task. Kuya Eric, the parish’s sacristan mayor, handled my classmates and me during our assigned duties. We cleaned the interiors of the parish, we swept the floor, and we also transferred some things that were no longer needed into the bodega. Not only did we do janitorial works, but we also did clerical jobs. My classmates and I arranged the documents by date. It was very challenging, yet we enjoyed our task. I discovered many things. I found out how things are ran inside the parish. I saw how people worked together in harmony. I also discovered that even the less fortunate would come and attend mass with those who are well-off. Seeing them made me feel happy because the rich and the poor are united inside the parish.
I realized that in the parish, one’s status does not matter. All that matters is that you are ready to serve God along with the rest of the community. I also realized how much work would be accomplished if we help the parish every day. From now on, I will do my best to make free time, possibly at least twice a month, so that I will be able to serve my parish. Perhaps I can be their pianist during Masses sometimes.—Carmel Therese Borja Cu ****** serving at st. Jude Thaddeus Parish was a great experience. Since it was my first time to do parish service, I thought it would be boring and tiring. I thought of it as a burden that would give me a hard time. But as I served weekly, I started to like it. Serving in the parish office was not hard
and boring at all. I realized that parish service is a path that brings me closer to God. It would not be tiring if you have the purpose of doing it for him. I realized that if I think of it as a requirement for good grades, I would feel tired doing it. I also thought that, maybe, this is God’s way of making me realize the importance of service. It is not an obligation, service is a humble mission that God has entrusted me to accomplish with a willing heart and spirit. It also felt light serving in sjtp because I can see God in the people and the way they treated us in the parish. They were so kind and they know how to handle parish servers with love and care. Lastly, I realized that serving in the parish is not just for the good grades but for the greater glory of God.—Ann Margaret B. Orendain
