AN AFTER-DINNER TALK

he gospel is a continuation of last Sunday’s heart to heart afterdinner talk of Jesus with the disciples. To keep the unity in the Church, the disciples are not only to abide in Jesus like a branch to a vine, but to heed his commandment of love. Jesus tells us to love one another in the same manner that he loves us. Interestingly, Jesus uses the letter, or to Nicodemus who greatly admired Greek word agape. Greeks his teachings and talked with SUNDAY distinguish different kinds of love. him at midnight. Yet, Jesus REFLECTION Eros and philia are different from spent more time with the agape. Philia refers What Jesus said was not a suggestion but to admiration and desire for a commandment. The only way to be a companionship. It keeps the marriage legitimate disciple is to learn to love the together even after the eros had slipped into agape way. The first reading demonstrates the oblivion together with the attendant agape nature of our Catholic faith. We are not hormones. However, both eros and philia are an exclusive club. Ours is not a gated-church based on one’s feelings toward the other. but a welcoming Church. Peter welcomed to Your love towards the other depends on his fold a Roman centurion, Cornelius. The second reading tells us It is an action rather than a feeling. It refers that the origin of love is God, and not to one’s duty to the other. Thus, regardless Hollywood. Agape is countless mysteries we encounter. Why was giving, not getting. I ever born? Why did God give me freedom? ‘Love one another as I have loved you.’ Why is it that many of my prayers are How did Jesus love? He loved exactly the answered? “L

Ano an tabang sako kan Prayer Meeting sa pagharubay kan ebanghelyo?

“An magtubod asin mabunyagan, ililigtas; alagad an dai magtubod, huhukuman.” An enot na sinambit iyo an pagtubod. Ikaduwa saná an pagpabunyag. Totoong mahalaga an bunyag tanganing maakò sa komunidad nin pagtubod. Alagad, urog mahalaga an pagkasabot kan pagtubod asin an mismong gawi nin pagtubod.

SJTP altar servers undergo formation program

O

n May 4, Friday, altar servers of sjtp graduated from the Summer Liturgical Formation. Seminarian John Lino Labrador conducted the written exam that completed the formation program. The scores earned by each altar server determined the level of formation of each of them.

Altar server Aldrich Verdejo shared that for level one formation, Sem. Lino taught them basic prayers, the sacraments, catechesis, and the ideals and rudiments of being an altar server. On the level 2 formation, Basil Ababa shared that Sem. Lino taught them all about Liturgical vessels and vestments. All the altar servers were required to attend this session to get themselves more acquainted with things that are used in the altar during Eucharistic celebrations. A practical exam for each server completes this level. Rodney Severa shared that his experience from the third level of formation was all about about the Liturgical articles and how to handle them during Masses. He recalls especially how to handle the thurible and how to apply it during incensation. For the fourth level of formation, Micah Espiritu shared how Sem. Lino taught

them about the Liturgical books and the Mass. There was also a practical exam after the talk of the formator. The altar servers learned the proper use of the Sacramentary and the Lectionary and other books used in the Liturgical celebration. There were five levels intended for the formation, but no server achieved the final level. A number of altar servers, however, reached the fourth level, and because of this, Sem. Lino shared with them the topic for the fifth level: Liturgical observances, seasons, and colors. The graduation ceremony also heard altar servers share testimonies and reflections about the ministry. There were also intermission numbers from the Knights and Ladies of the Altar. Bonx Castroverde and Rodney Severa shared their talents in music and singing; while Ladies of the Altar Jane Samosa, Jaja Cedro, Kath De

Castro, Joan Espinosa, and Micah Espiritu performed a dance. During the graduation ceremonies, Fr. Rex Hidalgo gave the altar servers an inspirational message. He told them that each server must not serve the person or the priest, but God himself, and that each server must live a life of service and dedication to serve the Lord. Fr. Wilmer Joseph Tria, sjtp pastor, gave the altar servers a final blessing and a short but inspirational message about the Church and the Mass. The week that led to the graduation was a busy week for Sem. Lino and for the Head of Worship Committee, Patrick Henry Balmaceda; for the Parish fathers; and for the altar servers. With this formation, sjtp altar servers are refreshed in their commitment to serve the Lord in the Altar and elsewhere. 4 micah espiritu

jesus: “you are my friends...”

J

esus said, “You are my friends, if you do what I command you.” (Jn 15:14) We all know what he did as a friend; we also know that he continues to call us to be with him. On this issue, let us examine how do we do as a friend. What are the challenges that I face as a friend to others? What is a friend for us? Do I experience friendship in my Church community? a friend for me is someone who is always there for you whenever you are happy or blessed. But a friend is more willing to be there with you always in times of troubles or weariness. Some friends are always with you even when they don’t know what you really feel. Some are far away from you but they seem so near when you get connected. But not at all the times you can really run to them to share your feelings and thoughts. Most of the times you keep them to yourself and seek help only from Him whom we can rely on anytime, anywhere we need. We may not be able to speak everything that’s in our hearts but He knows—He just knows. He always listen, He always understands, and He will always move mountains for us no matter what. And we will just experience, from elsewhere, the magical touch of His

hands that suddenly take away the fears, the sadness, and the heartaches we experience. No one could ever give that to us except our dear, dear friend up there, Jesus Christ! —Aimee Balin, Lector ****** what are the challenges that I face as a friend? 1. I often encounter misunderstanding with others. 2. I need to accept the flaws of my friends. 3. I need to accept the background that my friends have. 4. How am I going to change his/her mistakes? 5. What are the things that I can offer as a friend? —Amy San Juan, Lector ****** i’ve always been thankful for the presence of very dear friends in my life. I believe they are God-sent so that I will be more loving

and caring. I pray that I will be more and more magnanimous, honest, authentic, listening, sensing, gentle, fair, accepting, and liberating to them. —Vic Nierva, PWB ****** iyo po, namamatian ko an pagkasararo sa smuyng bec. RICE CHALLENGE! After the sjtp altar servers graduated from the Summer Liturgical Formation program, Fr. Wilmer treated them to Mang Inasal and dared them to a rice challenge—consume five cups of rice and earn Php100. Lil’ did he know the Knights and Ladies of the Altar were up for it. The result: 10 of the 15 altar servers consumed the needed volume. Mang Inasal even had to get rice from nearby Jollibee because the altar servers wanted more! 4
