In the Gospel, it is amazing that even In the Biblical language, “a man with an the demon acknowledged that Jesus is the unclean spirit” is understood as a man who Son of God—the Holy One of God (Mk is possessed by a demon, and Satan is the 1:24), but nowadays it seems that there are prince of demons (Mk 3:22). finding god in mayon’s ashfall
O
n January 13, there was a Mayon Volcano let off a phreatic (steamdriven) explosion. The following day, the alert level was raised to 3. Every night, I would see Mayon glowing in the dark, beautiful, yet very scary. On January 22, while we were conducting a strategic planning, Mayon spewed ashes 10km into the sky; it was followed by a fountain of lava, and the alert level was raised to 4. Immediately we activated our response plan; I was part of it, including its execution. Armed with experience in humanitarian missions, the work began: planning, attending cluster meetings, and reviewing our response plan, to ensure in adherence to international humanitarian principles and standards, particularly during emergency situation. The eruption of Mt. Mayon now
proves different from other disasters I had experienced. It is quite unpredictable. Our work continues despite imminent danger. Mayon is very near, it can be seen from our office; we get to see her erupt up close and— very—personal. I hear its ocassional rumbles and feel the tremors it makes sometimes. My work requires me to stay calm, as other people depend on me for quick decisions. As days progress, numbers rise: 519 classrooms in five towns and three cities of Albay are now evacuation centers; 21,479 students have their classes disrupted and authorities estimate this situation will last until two to three months. Around 56,217 individuals are now in overcrowded evacuation centers. Our organization will augment government efforts in establishing child center spaces and restore a sense of
normalcy for the affected families. As I reflect on this emergency, I am reminded about detaching from material things. In urgent situations, you will only need a “go-bag” containing distress whistle, flashlight, a bottle of water, an identification card, a swiss knife, a pen and notebook—and complete surrender to God—to survive. Most of the time we complain on simple inconveniences, they even cause us a lot of stress so much so that our relationship with people is affected. But in evacuation centers, displaced children, with their families, are fine with whatever help that comes. They sleep on concrete floors. They are grateful for whatever is rationed. Though fear would haunt me every time I see rocks rolling from Mayon’s crater, or feel episodes of tremors, or watch lava overflow and alter the horrifying beauty of this volcano, I feel thankful that I am still in a better place. These situations continue to fuel my passion to think about others, even before myself, to be generous with my time, talent and skills, and be compassionate to those who are experiencing difficulty. As I write this reflection, another episode of eruption is going on seen from my window. And I thank God for blessing me with so much courage and strength, for giving me another rich, unique experience that I can share to the next generation of humanitarian workers. This is another great chapter in my development work journal, another mile in my journey to a path less trodden. 4

What is the role of the Holy Bible in my everyday life?
J
anuary 27 is the National Bible Sunday, and on this occasion, we invite everyone to reflect on the oft-taken-for-granted role that the Holy Bible have in our daily lives. To some, this book, containing the collection of the most beautiful love stories between God and man, has always been a source of inspiration. To others, the words of the Bible serve as constant reassurance of God’s presence. How about you? Have you read the Bible recently? What did it tell you? How does God speak to you through the Scriptures? Here are what some sjtp parishioners have shared: an tataramon kan Dyos na nakapalaman sa Bibliya iyo man an minatao nin giya sa samuyang pamilya sa pangarualdaw ming pagbuhay. An agom ko

The verses are like food and water to me—quenching my thirst, feeding my hungry stomach, and giving me nutrients I need. This gives me strength to carry on through life’s ups and downs. I share the Word with my family and friends—my own little way of spreading the good news. Despite my weaknesses as a religious follower of the Catholic faith, I can tell that God is forgiving and, in the same manner, His words inspires me too to forgive easily.—Jania Marie, Camella Homes 4
