JESUS SETS THE EXAMPLE
T
oday, we celebrate the baptism of Jesus. The purpose of His baptism is different from ours. According to St. Ambrose, His is not a baptism to be cleansed but to cleanse. He cleansed the waters of the Jordan river so that whoever will be baptised in water will be cleansed. The holy water we use for baptism is the same water where Jesus was baptized. It is holy because Jesus made it a cleansing water for us. Christ. Yet we become His children by By assuming the likeness of a sinful adoption. From the Latin ad-optio, it is not flesh, according to St. Chrysostom, Jesus because of our will but because of the will of needed baptism not for His own sake but the Father. We must be grateful for this. for the sake of humanity. Baptism bestows What is in it for us?

Reflections from the field
M
anays Vangie Salak and Ellen Peña are both very active in parish service at SJTP. You’d usually find them where their help is most needed. Outside the parish, they’re not that different; Manay Vangie is a community worker and Manay Ellen works in the field of humanitarian assistance. Well, it seems that there’s not that much difference between the tasks that these two admirable women took on and carried over their shoulders. In the aftermath of TD Usman, they bumped on each other in Sagñay, providing postdisaster interventions and support among the victims of the tragic landslides that claimed dozens of lives and destroyed properties and sources of livelihood. The PWB asked for a short reflection from Manays Vangie and Ellen about their mission, and may grace come upon us as we read what they’ve written.—Ed.
the life of a humanitarian worker is something one cannot envy about, it is sometimes risky, and takes your time with family, especially when needs occur during Christmas season when families are supposed to be together having reunions. For three consecutive years I have been part of the humanitarian responses in Bicol. In 2016, there was Typhoon Nina; the year after, Mt. Mayon erupted, and then towards the end of 2018, Tropical Depression Usman came. Humanitarian action is about saving lives, my leaves that were meant for the holidays were oftentimes recalled. However, without regret, I traded off quality time with friends, relatives and families, to be where the action is. I know some of my loved ones
may not understand, but I am convinced that this is my mission and purpose. This year, it was a different type of disaster. Over the news, deaths were recorded as a result of the landslides in the towns of Tiwi, Sangay, and Buhi, while there was widespread flooding too in the low-lying areas of Bikol. We needed to move fast for any intervention we can provide to mitigate the effects of the disaster among the affected populationm particularly the vulnerable ones: children, pregnant and lactating women, the elderly, and persons with disability. Amidst the demanding tasks, I am still human, and I needed to attend to some family preparations during the holidays
like what any normal family does during the season. On top of this, I also had some responsibilities to the Parish of St. Jude Thaddeus in Naga where I head the Social Services Ministry. The ministry itself has also been actively involved in the emergency response, and I have been so blest to have members who are also very passionate. I am thankful that amidst rushing from one end to another and back, I did not experience any physical exhaustion that would have prevented me from doing my tasks. I do feel this is God’s grace providing me sound mind and body. I am thankful to my friends, relatives, and family for understanding my job. REFLECTIONS / next page

Despite my involvement in emergency response during the holiday season, I still consider 2018 as one of the best Christmases I’ve had. I felt the meaning of Christmas in every child, in every family, in every community that suffered the most yet remained steadfast in spirit.—Eleanor Peña ****** sagñay is close to my heart. Part of my beautiful childhood memories was well spent in Del Carmen River. And even in my senior years, I still owe to Sagñay a journey with the farmers in my ageing career. I may not have been an agriculturist but the relationship with the people I work with in Minadongjol and Buracan gave me sheer feeling of fulfillment that I could share even more even if I got so little. Their appreciation and cooperation are simply inspiring, which is something a community worker can always hold on to. My grandfather, Thomas, was also a farmer in Bongalon. This fact adds more wonder to my liking of Sagñay. Recently, Tropical Depression Usman devastated part of that place I consider as a personal haven. Everyone proved to be generous. Various organizations of different
colors were united and worked as one for the greater good of humanity. It pained me to see the evacuees, but the different colors at the evacuation centersmade the surroundings in harmony—people connecting people. Looking around the sports arena where the evacuees were, I realized something: that in any phase of our lives, people will need people, so, then, why prevent ourselves from being generous? Why wait for a disaster to come to be able to help one another? Why use relief goods to push for one’s political ambition? The best gift we can give to anyone is a gift that he needs, really needs. A gift that when given away, we don’t expect anything in return. The Usman tragedy in Sagñay, even if it has brought us real and felt setbacks, promises that despite negativity, positivity is always within our reach. All we have to do is to give without hesitation; let us become light to others, let us become echoes of goodness. We may bear different colors, but we will surely enjoy life’s journey and form colorful rainbows together, by making our grandest of intentions work with humility and compassion.—Maria Evangeline Salak 4 SUNDAY MASS COLLECTIONS SATURDAY, 5 JANUARY 2019
