The shepherd's heart
t is with great pride and joy that the faithful of the St. Jude Thaddeus Archdiocesan Shrine and Parish welcome Fr. Francis A. Tordilla and Fr. Emmanuel G. Mojica as the new Parish Priest and Parish Vicar respectively. It is very appropriate that the Installation ceremony happen during this year’s solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus (June 28, 2019), whence the Gospel reading for the mass is taken from Lk 15:3-7—“The Parable of the Lost Sheep.” In Christian parlance, “the shepherd is It is astonishing that the solemnity of the most Sacred Heart of Jesus should the pastor” and “the flock of sheep is the faithful which make up the Church.” In be linked with Jesus’ story of the kind shepherd finding the lost sheep. Perhaps the book of Acts and in the Epistles, both it is because herding of sheep in the time Sts. Peter and Paul exhort pastors to feed, tend, and protect the church. They are to and place of Jesus possess do all the things that a distinctive characteristics and SUNDAY shepherd would do to take care Jesus picked up the wisdom REFLECTION of the flock. But at a closer look behind these customs, at the admonitions of Peter and Paul, the traditions and practices of responsibilities for pastors involve shepherding. The shepherd stay out in teaching as well, as they “oversee” the the fields during the whole day with his flock of God (1 Pet. 5:2). The pastor is flock in any weather and he protects his flock from the dangers of the wild beasts described as a man who is older and experienced in the faith--an elder; a and other potential attackers like person who is a decision-maker, manager bandits and robbers with his staff, a rod of church affairs, and leader; and one who or a slingshot. At night he leads his herd into a “sheepfold,“ which are shelters like maintains a careful watch for the spiritual needs of all the members of the flock, and stone walls that they build or natural they serve in a plurality over a single shelters like caves. The Shepherd makes congregation (Titus 1:5; Acts 14:23; 1 Pet. sure that the count of his sheep is 5:1-2). Moreover, no one man can assume correct each time he leads them at night into the sheepfold and every morning as the role of “the pastor,” whether by title or by practice, for a congregation. Neither he leads them out for pasture. At can a congregation delegate one man to be another glance, the sheep have the keen the sole church manager, regardless of the sense of the shepherd’s voice or the sound of his horn which the animals rely unanimity of vote or the crises at hand . . . though all pastors are ministers, not all as signals when they are supposed to ministers are pastors. The shepherd's heart / previous page tary roles of service were designed by Christ to lead all members to serve God according to their abilities (Eph. 4:12). In that respect, all Christians should be “ministers” of the gospel . . . working together with their pastor. If the sheep should be a person, it can be said that the sheep and the shepherd has a very intimate personal relationship between each other. How wonderful it could have been if Christians can appropriate that commitment of Jesus to give His life for us Christians His “flock of sheep” and if each one of us can mutually have the heart of the Good shepherd for each other, and say with Jesus—“Rejoice with me, I have found my sheep that was lost.” And we can all sing: “Heart of Jesus meek and mild,/ Hear, oh hear thy feeble child.../ Sweetly we'll rest on thy Sacred Heart,/ never from Thee, oh, let us part,/ hear then thy loving children's pray'r,/ O Heart of Jesus, Heart of Jesus, hear!.../ Make me Jesus wholly thine,/ take this wayward heart of mine.” 7 ramon l. almoneda, phd-th
Our (not so) new Parish Priest named Francis (Thor, sometimes) Because the usual 'Welcome Fr. Francis Tordilla' is dull and boring
T
he Parish and Shrine of St. Jude Thaddeus welcomes its fifth Parish Priest and third Rector with much enthusiasm. This despite the fact that our new Parish Priest is not at all new to us having been our Parochial Vicar for a year. Prior to his assignment at SJTP, he had also served as Parochial Vicar of St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Siruma, Camarines Sur, back from 2005 to 2006. Then he became the personal secretary to the Archbishop of Caceres from 2010 till 2011. Somewhere far from Bikol, in Rome, Italy, he had served as Collaboratore Pastorale. Not new then, but not luma naman at all. Forty-one (!) summers ago, in Calabanga, Camarines Sur, by the shores of San Miguel Bay, our (not so) new Parish Priest was born—he was thereafter named Francis, of the House Tordilla. Records say he’s now a silver jubilarian (that’s 25 years!) alumnus of St. Joseph School—by this fact, let’s presume he knows Mandarin (or, say, a bit of it). Then, in 1994, he entered the Holy Rosary Seminary, and, some summers after that, he would graduate with a Bachelors degree in Sacred Theology— that’s STB—at the Pontifical and Royal University of Sto. Tomas, and not only that, he finished Magna cum Laude. Fr. Francis once told the UST Varsitarian that he has high respect for vocations and lifestyle of priests after literally growing up within a church and having been an acolyte there for years in his hometown. He was ordained into priesthood in 2005. Some summers later, and with the Archbishop’s approval, he would find himself, perhaps, happily, on a flight which destination is the Leonardo da Vinci
International Airport in Rome, this time to pursue his Masters degree in Dogmatic Theology and Licentiate in Church History at the Pontificia Universita Gregoriana (Note: STB wasn’t enough really, he wanted the Greg's name in Italian, and of course, he finished Summa Cum Laude). Currently, he is a candidate for Doctorate in Church History at the Gregorian. (Venerable Bede, pray for us, and him because he’s now a Parish Priest.) These academic achievements speak of his knowledge about the history of the Church; so we better not doze off during his very clear and informative homilies. Fr. Francis or Fr. Tords, as he is fondly called (occasionally, just Thor, but not the Chris Hemsworth type), just has a heart for the youth, as he himself is ever youthful. Only in SJTP a parish priest would
cover—that's singing and playing the guitar—Ed Sheeran's songs the Italian Ed Sheeran's way. As the Parochial Vicar of SJTP prior to his assignment as Parish Priest, he was assigned by Fr. Wilmer Tria to head the reorganization of the youth and to think of a relevant project that will bring the youth together. He, together with the youth of the parish, came up with what would be the successful EcoRun. His interest to form the young was inspired by his four years as formator at the Holy Rosary Major Seminary, where he teaches Mariology, Medieval and Ancient Church History, and Theology of Creation. In 2018, he taught at Naga Parochial School for Latin and Italian Subjects. He will soon be teaching German and the Balkan languages, though he’s just learning them now. In 2006, Fr. Francis wrote the article “Devotion to Our Lady of Penafrancia: The Relevance of Popular Religiosity in the Evangelization of Bicol” for the journal, Veritatis Amor: UST Journal of Theology, Vol. XVI. He has been among the most active priests in rethinking directions of Church history studies in Bikol. Fr. Francis received his appointment letter from Archbishop Rolando J. Tria Tirona, OCD, DD, during the Chrism Mass on Holy Thursday this year. He officially started his pastorship of SJTP last June 10, 2019. editor's note: From the invisible desk of the Parish Weekly Bulletin, we joyfully welcome you, Fr. Francis. We are hoping for your continued prompt submission (Thorsday deadline is better) of Sunday Reflection, weekly Lectio Divina, and the very important announcements. 7 ellen peña, pwb
ANNOUNCEMENTS
A welcome message to our new Parish Priest and Pastor
A
JUNE 28. Eucharistic Celebration and
warm welcome to Fr. Francis Tordilla, our new Parish Priest and Rector of the Archdiocesan Shrine and Parish of St.Jude Thaddeus.
You are now our shepherd and we believe that God appointed you to be our rector and parish priest for a good reason. God is never wrong. The reason may not be clear for now but in His time, God will reveal this to you. The task of running a parish can be daunting but at the same time challenging. Rest assured, that we, your parishioners will always be with you with our full support. Always start your day with that “killer smile” as you often do. That is your best weapon in softening hard hearts and difficult situations that you will inevitably encounter in your daily pastoral work. Be thankful when you don’t know something, for it gives you the opportunity to learn new things. Your biggest advantage and edge are the presence of two powerful intercessors
in our Parish—St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of the hopeless and impossible cases, and Our Mother of Perpetual Help, our secondary patronnes, ever-present to us and our intimate way to Jesus. With their combined prayers, you will accomplish more than you think you can. Again, our sincere congratulations on your new and challenging assignment. Always remember that God does not choose the qualified. Rather, God qualifies His chosen leader. We are with you in prayers and always ready to serve you and our parish. Yours in Christ, Bro. Emil and Sis. Babette Alegre Couples for Christ
