Break the cycle
F
or this 31st Sunday in ordinary time the Gospel reading (lk 19:1-10) is about the story of the conversion of Zaccheus who was a chief tax collector in Jericho, a town in Palestine. In the time and place of Jesus, a tax collector is one who is most hated by the Jews since instead of using the taxes for the development of their own society; he collects taxes to enrich him personally and their nation’s conqueror --the Romans. Aside from being hated, a tax collector (Publican) is indiscriminately judged by everybody as a sinner. Zaccheus is described by Luke’s Gospel coping mechanisms which can be more as a short man who climbed a sycamore self-destructive and counter to tree in order that he can see Jesus community-building relationships. who was passing by. Exegetes In the Gospel Jesus showed SUNDAY (experts in Biblical an example how to break the REFLECTION interpretation) would say that cycle of rejection wherein Luke’s description of Zaccheus as Zaccheus was seemingly caught up. Instead “a short man” is not limited to Physical of tagging Zaccheus as the tax collector shortness but spiritual and emotional as and sinner, Jesus delved into a deeper well. Zaccheus is short of self-esteem and relationship with Zaccheus as a person by identity, short of respect and dignity, and calling him by name–giving him his true short of self-worth and friends. These identity; telling him to come down from “shortness” are consequences of how the sycamore tree—engaging Himself with Zaccheus deal with himself and his life a sincere conversation and urging him to which are results of the way people around be authentic without using artificial him treat him. People rejected him and in coping/defense mechanisms; and lastly, order to cope up with these rejections he Jesus came to visit his abode and shared a succumbs to climbing “the sycamore tree” meal with Zaccheus—this is ministry in which is symbolic of the way people who action which prompted Zaccheus to lack affirmation (KSP in the vernacular— completely turn around and offered to give kulang sa pansin) look for strategies in half of his belongings to the poor and order to be noticed. Some people resort to repay back four times as much those whom bullying, fake talks, malingering, he has cheated. alcoholism, drugs or even suicide. When As Christians today, how do we deal unchecked, this situation can be caught in with people who give in or sell our rights a vicious cycle. The more that somebody is and sovereignty to those who are subtly rejected the more that a person becomes conquering us? AN ALL SAINTS' DAY SPECIAL
Grasping the concepts of heaven, hell, and purgatory
(part 1) have you been good lately? This rhetorical question is posed to set the right tone and context as we try to dissect and to clarify the concepts of heaven, hell, and purgatory especially at this most fitting of occasion, All Saints' and All Souls' Days on November 1 & 2. As Christian Catholics, we were catechized in the doctrines of heaven, hell, and purgatory and we were schooled from baptism onwards to aspire for heaven and most certainly avoid the tempting traps of hell in the afterlife. And if and when we fall into sin as frail and flawed humans as we are, then, there is purgatory, where our souls are cleansed and prepared for a banquet at the Lord's table in heaven, our final destination. But as we live in this digital age and humanity is so much more influenced by social media, these age-old church teachings now pale and are gradually losing its grasp on our consciousness, on our collective conscience as a race, on our very souls masked by the buzz terms of "inclusivity" and "tolerance." The Google app seems to hold all the answers that we sometimes forget that we still have God, our creator, to answer for all our actions here on earth. In the 14th century in medieval Italy, a poet/playwright, Dante Alighieri, penned the classic epic allegory "Divine Comedy" where he—with divine inspiration— depicted with clarity that humans could comprehend the timeless concepts of Inferno (hell), Purgatorio (purgatory), and Paradiso (heaven) wherein hell is described "as nine concentric circles of torment located within the earth" where its realm are for "those who have rejected spiritual values by yielding to bestial appetites or violence, or by perverting their human intellect to fraud or malice against their fellowmen." In the said epic poem, sin is represented by three beasts: leopard for malice and fraud; lion for violence and bestiality; and she-wolf for incontinence. Under these categories are further divisions of human infractions and their degrees of gravity and levels of
depravity. The first circle is Limbo where the unbaptized and the pagans who lived virtuous lives are found. Lust is the second circle where "carnal malefactors are condemned for allowing their appetites to sway their reason." Occupying the third circle is Gluttony where the "surrender to sin which began with mutual indulgence leads by an imperceptible degradation to solitary selfindulgence." Overindulgence is not only a sin in food but also in other kinds of addiction. The fourth circle is Greed where the avaricious or miserly reside: those who hoarded wealth and possessions and wont to share to mankind. But it is likewise home to the prodigal who squandered them as well. In the fifth circle is Wrath where "active hatreds rend and snarl at one another, the sullen hatreds lie gurgling, unable to express the rage that chokes them." Indeed, it is true that untempered anger does attract evil spirits to reign in our hearts and slowly devour our souls. As the circles near the bowels of hell, we get a glimpse of the sixth circle which is Heresy wherein "the soul dies with the body." This chamber is reserved for those who sinned against Nature (natural resources) and Art (human labor & activity). Heretics spread erroneous/ false beliefs in exchange for selfaggrandisement. Beware the bearers of false truths from false prophets. In the seventh circle is Violence against neighbors (murderers, warmakers, plunderers, tyrants), against self (suicides), against God (blasphemers), against art (usurers), and against nature (Sodomites). Souls of suicides, although pitied and prayed for, "will not be corporally resurrected after the Final Judgment since they threw their bodies away." (To be continued) 7 jane santelices

Front Page | break the cycle who bully us? Should we just keep quiet, forgive and forget? As far as Jesus showed in the Gospel, He did not return the ill-natured person of Zaccheus with rudeness or disrespect; nor did He not do anything; He did not just remain quiet. Jesus broke the cycle of rejection where Zaccheus was caught into and put into action his ministry of affirmation and started a personal relationship with Zaccheus. That personal relationship which Jesus established brought Zaccheus into a new person. Cycles of rejection are rampant today! With Jesus, let us break it! 7 ramon l. almoneda, phd-th
