AN ALL SAINTS' DAY SPECIAL
Grasping the concepts of heaven, hell, and purgatory
(part 2) have you been good lately? This rhetorical question is posed to set the right tone and context as we try to dissect and to clarify the concepts of heaven, hell, and purgatory especially at this most fitting of occasion, All Saints' and All Souls' Days on November 1 & 2. (continued from last issue) Fraud is the eighth circle where "corruption, progressive disintegration of every social relationship, personal and public" is made manifest as it seeps into the human soul and festers inside it. Fraud encompasses "sexuality, ecclesiastical and civil office, language, ownership, counsel, authority, psychic influence, and material interdependence—all the media of the community's interchange are perverted and falsified." Among the roster of fraudsters are panderers & seducers who "deliberately exploited the passions of others and drove them to serve their own interests;" the flatterers who "exploited other people, abusing and corrupting language to play upon others' desires and fears;" the Simoniacs (Simony) for selling of "ecclesiastical favors and offices, made money for themselves out of what belongs to God;" the sorcerers who "usurped God's prerogative by peering into the future;" the barrators or corrupt politicians who "made money by trafficking in public offices;" the hypocrites whose "outward appearance shines brightly and passes for holiness but under that show lies the terrible weight of deceit;" the thieves who "stole other people's substance in life;" the Counsellors of Fraud or fraudulent advisers or evil counsellors who "gave false advice, who used their position to advise others to engage in fraud;" the Sources of Discord who "rip up the whole fabric of society to gratify a sectional egotism" wherein examples of which are: "religious schism & discord; civil strife & political discord, and family disunion or discord among kinsmen;" and the falsifiers who are treated as "disease on society afflicted with different types of afflictions: Alchemists (falsifiers of things), Imposters (falsifiers of persons), Counterfeiters (falsifiers of money), and Perjurers (falsifiers of words). Located at the bowels of hell is the 9th circle which is Treachery where
"treacheries of the soul were denials of love and of all human warmth; the deepest level of hell is reserved for traitors, betrayers, and oathbreakers." For those of us believers still toiling in life, we are therefore reminded that hell "is an afterlife location in which evil souls are subjected to punitive suffering, often torture as eternal punishment after death." In Dante's depiction, punishment in hell typically corresponds to sins committed during life. It is "fiery, painful and harsh, inflicting suffering on the guilty." Hell is the "final destiny of those who have not been found worthy after the general resurrection and last judgment where they will be eternally punished for sin and permanently separated from God." Heaven, on the other hand, is often depicted as "a common religious, cosmological or transcendent place where beings such as gods, angels, spirits, saints or venerated ancestors are said to originate, be enthroned or live." It is further described as "a higher place, the holiest place, a paradise and universally and conditionally accessible by earthly beings to various standards of divinity, goodness, piety, faith, and other virtues or right beliefs or simply the will of God." To the Hebrews, inherited from Persians, Greeks, and Romans, the idea of heaven is that place where the "human soul originates in the divine realm and seeks to return there." Heaven is the eternal home of the righteous dead. It is where the kingdom of God is located and it is the promised paradise where every wish is immediately fulfilled when asked and where eternal happiness with God resides. To us faithful, heaven is the ultimate aspiration and destination and we constantly aim for purification even while living to be worthy of our place in heaven with God, the angels, and the saints. Thus, in our belief of continually purifying the soul, the concept of Purgatory came to be for us Christian Catholics. People who sinned but prayed
for forgiveness before their deaths are found not in hell but in purgatory where they labor and repent to become free of their sins to eventually become worthy of heaven. Purgatory, therefore, is "purification after death; an intermediate state after physical death for expiatory purification." It is believed to be "any place or condition of suffering or torment that is temporary," a transitory state of cleansing on the journey to heaven and God's embrace. The Catholic Church holds that "all who die in God's grace and friendship but still imperfectly purified undergo the process of purification which the church calls purgatory so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven." Both Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI have declared that the term "purgatory" does not indicate a place but a condition of existence. It is our belief that the afterlife purification is based on the practice of praying for the dead that "presupposes that the dead are thereby assisted between death and their entry into their final abode." Our Catholic Church recognizes the doctrine of purgatory as it is defined in the Second Council of Lyon (1274), the Council of Florence (1438-1445), and the Council of Trent (1545-1563). It is taught that some souls are purified after death and such souls benefit from the prayers and pious duties that the living do for them, therefore, we believers annually commemorate All Saints' and All Souls' Days to help our beloved dead transcend purgatory and enter heaven. 7 jane marie tria santelices

Liwat na tinukar ni Papa Pio XI an pagkahadi ni Kristo sa ensiklika nyang Quas primas kan 1925. Sinundan kan ensiklika an pahayag ni San Cirilo Alejandria na nagsasabing an pagkahadi

Ginamit man sa ensiklika an sinabi ni Papa Peon XIII sa Annum sacrum (1899) na an PGKahadi ni Kristo kasugpon kan debosyon sa saiyang Mahal na Puso. An kapyestahan ni Kristong Hadi isiniselebrar bako sana kan Simbahan Romano Katoliko, kundi pati man kan mga Simbahan na Orthodox, mga Protestante, Lutherano, asin Anglikano. 7 vic nierva
