WELCOME TO THE MAP GROUP UK STADIUM FOR THE OPENING LEAGUE GAME OF THE SEASON AGAINST GUISBOROUGH TOWN

ood afternoon and a warm welcome to the MAP Group UK Stadium for this afternoon’s opening league game of the season. We take on Guisborough Town and we look forward to welcoming another sell-out crowd here today. It was an important win for us on Wednesday and I’m pleased after such a long lay-off. People were unsure as to how we were going to be and how we reacted after what happened last season, but we’ve put that to bed quite early. We came out the blocks really sharp and thoroughly deserved the win. We worked on pressing high up the pitch and winning the ball up there. That came off on Wednesday and that’s what we’re trying to do, put teams under pressure early on. It worked on Wednesday against Shildon. You could see from our forward players; Mikey, Franksy, Munchie and Nathan, they were all pressing high and compact as a team. There are positives all over the place. It’s hard to pick a squad, never mind an 11 at the minute. You look at the players, who we left out on Wednesday, Tom Portas wasn’t even in the squad due to his injury. We brought on Jamie Owens, Max Craggs and Kevin Hayes and he played a part in the third goal. That’s great to see that they’ve came on and had a great attitude. That’s something that we’ll be looking for throughout the season. That’s also the reason we’ve tried to build such a strong squad. I said before the game on Wednesday that it’s difficult to pick an 11, but the 11 that are playing now have got the shirts and know that if they do slip up then someone can easily just come in and take their place. stockton_townfc

Anchors TV

“AFTER THE WIN DURING THE WEEK, CONFIDENCE IS HIGH AND THE LADS WILL BE LOOKING FOR THREE POINTS.” Then it’s down to the players, who are on the bench or outside of the squad to work hard and get back into the team, so the competition for places is probably the best that it’s been since I’ve been here. You’ve only got to look at Wednesday’s performance to see how focussed they are. They want to go and do it again this season and I think they’ve got the bit between their teeth even more because of what happened and how unfair it was. I wouldn’t say that they’ve got a point to prove, but they want to go out there and show that they deserve to be at the top of this league and get promoted come the end of the season. Looking at our opponents this afternoon now, games against Guisborough, over the years, have always been quite tight. We had two close games against them last season, fortunately won them both, but they’re quite physical in their approach, got some good players and some ex-Stockton players too. They’ve got a good back line with Josh Rowbotham and Nathan Guru. They’re good going forward with the likes of Sonni Coleman and Mason McNeill, so they’ll pose a physical threat. We’re at home, this is our first league game and after the great performance on Wednesday, we’re confident we can go out and get the three points.

ANCHORS WILL TRAVEL TO BILLINGHAM TOWN IN NEXT ROUND OF EMIRATES FA CUP

A

Teesside derby against Billingham Town awaits the Stockton Town in the FA Cup Preliminary Round. The Anchors secured their trip to Bedford Terrace after they dispatched Shildon 3-0 on Wednesday and Town had overcome Northallerton Town 4-1 on Tuesday. Stockton sealed the double over Billingham Town last season. On the opening day, the Anchors made short work with a 6-0 win and in January they ran out 2-0 winners. On the tie, assistant manager JD Briggs said: “An FA Cup

game against a local rival will be a difficult game. “We’ve got to approach the game in the right way.” Briggs is aware with Stockton’s form last season; teams will be keen to knock them down. “Every team finished below us last year,” Briggs said. “So we’ve got to adapt our game with not just with teams from the bottom six but teams from near the top too.” The game will take place on Saturday 12 September at Bedford Terrace ground. Fans will be updated on ticket details during the week.

HOME LEAGUE FIXTURE AGAINST WEST AUCKLAND TOWN RESCHEDULED

T

he home game against West Auckland Town has been rescheduled to Saturday 19 September. The game was originally planned for Saturday 24 October- the weekend of the FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round. West Auckland have proven to be one of the more exciting visitors to the Map Group UK Stadium. Memorable encounters include Stockton Town’s 2-1 win in extra-time in the run to the 2018 FA Vase Final and a pulsating 3-3 draw at the beginning of the 2018-

19 season. Last season, the Anchors comfortably beat West Auckland 3-0 at home before the reverse game was a turgid goalless which was the last game before the season was declared null and void. West Auckland began this season by progressing in the FA Cup. A stoppage time goal from Adam Mitchell sealed a 3-2 win at Northern League Division Two, Heaton Stannington. Fans are reminded to check our website and social media in regards to any future fixture changes.

MIKEY ROBERTS

Stockton Town host Guisborough Town on Saturday as the Anchors get their Northern League campaign underway. Ahead of the match, we caught up with striker Mikey Roberts to get his thoughts on pre-season, the FA Cup tie against Shildon, his aims for the season and more. Q: The Northern League season was declared null-and-void last season, how did that affect you personally, knowing all the season’s work was lost? A: It was hard to take, we didn’t know what was happening, watching it happen, filter down we thought it might be the same where promoted teams would go up on points per game but when it was nulland-void for just us, it was hard to take. Personally, and as a team, all of us probably feel the same, it was tough, in one sense it was a kick in the teeth but in another sense it was motivation to prove it wasn’t a one off and we go and do it again.

// 9

Q: Coming back from pre-season after a long break, did it take you time to get in the groove of things? A: Yeah, it was a strange one coming back to pre-season after such a long time off, you can do all the road running and exercise you want but as soon as it comes to games, it’s a completely different type of fitness and feeling. It was tough, it took us a while to get going, I’m not sure whether that was the lay-off but we can’t use that as an excuse because everyone’s had it. It took us a while but the last two pre-season games we were really good and we took into Shildon last night. Q: Do you think playing against the likes of South Shields and Whitby helped to take your game to the next level? A: Definitely, we played Morpeth in our first game, and although we lost 2-0 I thought we played quite well in spells. When we played Horden, we were turned over because they worked harder than us, they wanted it more and it was probably the kick up the backside we needed as a group that we do need to dig in and it isn’t going to be easy and we need to turn up with the right mentality, from there that helped us. Q: Personally, you’ve now scored in back to back matches, was that your aim to start the season quickly and force your way into the team? A: I suppose, but the strength of the squad is frightening, in the striker position we have myself, Jamie Owens and Nathan Steel still to come back, you’ve got three who in my opinion are more than capable of playing week in week out in the Stockton team. I had a conversation with Michael in the off season and he said to me and all the players that you’ve got to work hard and earn your shirt and once it’s once it’s yours you’ve got to work hard to keep it, as long as I’m working hard in games and in training, scoring goals and doing the right things, I try and make myself impossible to be dropped. Q: Have you set yourself a personal goal target for this season? A: Not as of yet, I’ve been more focused

10 //

stockton.townfc

stockton_townfc

on getting myself right and ready to go. The strength of the squad is incredible, looking at the bench, it’s one of the best I’ve ever seen in the Northern League, anyone could start any game so instead of setting myself any targets, I’m just this season I’m taking it differently and targeting myself to keep my shirt. Q: For the team, the aim will be promotion, is there any other aims like a deep FA Vase run or another good FA Cup run? A: We all know promotion is the aim, that’s what we want. Every Northern League player’s dream is to play in the Wembley FA Vase final, I know some of the lads have done it at Stockton but hopefully we can get there this year and hopefully win it. A good FA Cup run is always a bonus, it’s always a good day out for the fans, it’s good for the players to play against higher level opponents, and it’s good for the club financially. Q: On the win on Wednesday’s night, to put out a performance like that against Shildon, a top two side last season, must have been some statement? A: We had a big talk before the game to not drop our standards. We know this season, in stockton_townfc

Anchors TV

our league, we believe if we play the way we can and impose our game on teams, we are going to be difficult to beat. I think we were just a little bit too much for Shildon at times last night. We limited them well, aside from two fantastic saves from Callum but we know we are going to get them from a keeper like him. Ideally, we don’t give him too much to do and like last season, not concede too many goals. Q: We now move on to Guisborough at home to begin our league campaign, one of your former teams, it’s a big game to start with? A: It is, last year we had Billingham Town in another local derby, we ran out comfortable winners and hopefully we can do the same on Saturday. I’m not expecting Guisborough to roll over, they’re a good side, very well organised and have some very good players, form goes out of the window in derbies, it will be a tough test but I think it’s a welcome test because that’s what we had with Shildon and we’ve overcome it. If we start ideally with a win over Guisborough we set our stall out for the season.

tockton Town opened their season by progressing to the Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round with a commanding 3-0 win over Shildon. The game started in monsoon like weather – not something you would typically expect for the opening game of the season. Not that it deterred Stockton and they had game’s first chance when Mulligan fired wide after receiving the ball from James Risbrough’s cross. They then took the lead when Mulligan hounded Shaun Newbrook into an error. The goalkeeper kicked it straight to feet of Roberts who made no mistake to strike home. Stockton doubled their lead after 25 minutes

when Lewis King found Mulligan who calmly found the net via the post. Ten minutes into the second half Callum Roberts showed his ability with a magnificent save to deny a Posthill effort that was bound for the top corner. Franks impressed throughout and he had an effort that proved too much for Newbrook to handle at the first attempt. The home side capped off their night when Franks headed in Hayes’ cross from the left. Shildon were denied a consolation when Sweet could only send his effort straight at Roberts. The Anchors will travel to Billingham Town in the next round of the competition.

POST-MATCH REACTION

JD BRIGGS: “I thought we were excellent right from the off and pressed really well, especially the first 15 minutes. We didn’t let them out and this led to our first goal. I was really happy with Nathan and Mikey, who both scored again and looked dangerous each time we went forward with both having other good chances. Nathan with a header saved at very close range and Mikey having a rasping shot just tipped over in the first half. I thought Jordan and Shane were exceptional in winning the ball back and then got us playing. Shane looked a lot more comfortable after the Whitby game and managed the full 90 unscathed.” stockton_townfc

OPPOSITION PROFILE

GUISBOROUGH T OWN When the season was declared null and void, Guisborough Town were enjoying their best season since 2015-16. They were in 7th and had a six-point lead on eighth place Newcastle Benfield. It was the culmination of the improvement manager Gary Forster has brought to the side since his appointment in December 2016. The Priorymen have added to the core they developed. Defenders Nathan Guru and Callum Martin have been brought in from Thornaby and Whitby Town to add to the already solid Josh Rowbotham. Both return for their second spell with the club. Former Stockton youth players, Joe Bartliff and Brad Marron add competition to the midfield. Christian Selby has also been brought in to add further experience to a youthful squad. The first meeting of the clubs saw Guisborough Town beat Stockton Town 4-2 in their first FA Cup game. In the league, they shared a win each in both 2017-18 and in 2018-19. Last season, the Anchors completed the double.
