WELCOME TO THE MAP GROUP UK STADIUM FOR TONIGHT’S NORTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE MATCH AGAINST SEAHAM RED STAR
I
’d like to start off my notes by welcoming the players, staff and committee of Seaham Red Star and a warm welcome to all of our supporters for tonight’s Northern League Division One match. We’ve had a few training sessions, so the lads are fresh going into this. The game on Saturday, away at Penrith, was called off at the last minute, so it was a bit disappointing because we prepared and we had three good results against three of the better teams in the league. We are full of confidence and were disappointed we didn’t get to play, but it allowed us to work on things and gave people who had knocks, like Franksy who wouldn’t have been ready for Penrith, a chance to recover. The postponements at this time of year affects your rhythm. I think we’Ve picked up 13 out of the last 15 points available, so we’re on a good unbeaten run. It affects the rhythm a little bit when you’re on a run, but you’ve got to get on with it. It’s a good opportunity, against Seaham, to get three points and keep the run going. Looking at results of teams around us is something you do look at, but we’ve got to go out and do our business on the pitch. We’ll always take each game as it comes and we go into every game wanting to win, so if we do our job the rest will sort itself out. Our last home game was against Consett and the way they play is quite difficult with the diamond in the midfield. We were struggling to cope with it in the first-half and we were lucky not to be 3-1 or 4-1 down at half-time. We had a few words with the players at half-time, we changed the shape of the team stockton_townfc
Anchors TV
“SEAHAM ARE A BIT OF A BOGEY TEAM FOR US. I’VE WATCHED HIGHLIGHTS AND HAD REPORTS THAT THEY’VE BEEN PLAYING WELL.” and in the second-half, it was the complete opposite. We put our chances away and probably could’ve won by more in the end, it was convincing. Then we went to Shildon and in difficult conditions, in the end, I was happy to come away with a point. They probably had the more clear-cut chances in the game, but overall, it was a fairly even game and we had a lot more possession than what they did. They were a bit more direct, we couldn’t break them down and they defended well. We said before the game that it felt a strange one. Last year there were 800 fans there, people coming out of the bar all the time and you could feel it was a big game with the atmosphere in the ground. But this time, it’s the first time this season, where we’ve gone somewhere and it didn’t really feel like a game. There wasn’t a lot of fans and we took 200 fans there last year. The players were disappointed not to win, but seven points from those three games is good. I don’t like to talk about the ground restrictions a lot, but I don’t think it’s a fair playing field at the moment. Thornaby can have 300 fans in their ground against Ashington for example, but on the flip side, Ashington can only have 150 fans at home to Thornaby. It just doesn’t make any sense at all.

FORWARD BULMER RE-SIGNS FOR STOCKTON TOWN AFTER SPELL WITH THORNABY
tockton Town are delighted to announce that forward Peter Bulmer has re-signed from neighbours Thornaby. The 29-year-old had made 72 appearances in all competitions for the Anchors in his first spell at the club following his arrival from Marske United, scoring 10 times. Peter, who can be used in any forward position, had this to say on his return: “I am absolutely delighted to be back at Stockton. It’s such a great club that I genuinely
loved being a part of previously and now I have that opportunity again I can’t wait to get started and hopefully we can have a successful season.” Manager Michael Dunwell added: “[I am] really delighted to have Peter back, it was a no brainer to get him back as we never wanted him to leave in the first place.” ”He will be a massive asset to the squad in a position where we lack a bit of depth at the minute, he will certainly strengthen that and add competition.”
ANCHORS DRAWN AGAINST DARLINGTON IN DURHAM CHALLENGE CUP
S
tockton Town have been drawn away to Darlington in the Durham Challenge Cup First Round. The tie will take place at Blackwell Meadows on the week preceding Saturday 19 December 2020. Stockton enjoyed a memorable run to the Semi Final of the competition last season, eliminating Bishop Auckland and Newton Aycliffe before causing a shock, defeating Northern Premier League opponents South Shields 2-1 at the 1st

Cloud Arena. Spennymoor Town eventually overcame the Anchors in the last four, emerging 4-1 winners after Max Craggs headed the visitors into the lead. The club has played Darlington once before, losing to the Quakers in this competition during the 2018/19 season. Harvey Saunders scored a hat-trick and Brandon Harrison added another as Darlington overcame the Anchors 4-0, in the Second Round.

SHANE HENRY
hane Henry joined his hometown club earlier in the summer from Spennymoor Town, after a six-year spell with The Moors. Nicknamed “The Bull”, Shane is known for his powerful midfield performances and a tireless work-ethic. The midfielder has quickly become a fan favourite at Stockton and is an important cog in the midfield. In this feature, Shane discusses the season so far, his personal performances and looks to the future with Durham Challenge Cup and FA Vase ties on the horizon. The Anchors suffered a slow start to their league campaign, picking up five points from four games, Shane admits the start of the season was not as we’d have liked: “It was slow to start really, a couple of draws early on in the season but over the last month or so we have started to pick up our form and started picking up wins instead of draws.

We will look to win tomorrow night and we have a good group of games coming up. I think we will pick up more points over the coming games.” On his own performances so far this campaign: “I didn’t have much preseason, I felt really good then I picked up a knock. I just need a run of games. I get better after 6-8 games. When I’m playing, I’m playing well, I wish I had scored more goals, in terms of my performances I think I have been pretty consistent. It’s been a bit of a stop-start due to a couple of knocks but I’m quite pleased and I know I can get better. Hopefully we see that over the coming months. Shane scored his first Stockton goal in the 4-1 victory over Consett, the midfielder was delighted to break his duck in front of goal: “I was delighted, if you look back at the highlights it was a great goal, we broke from the edge of our own box, Kev’s played a good ball round the corner and Kingy’s put it in area where I’ve just had to head it. There’s been chances in between that and I’m confident I can score ten goals this season.” Shane is also confident that how he has broken his duck, the goals will flow: “I think so [scoring more goals], I wouldn’t be surprised if I scored a couple in the next few weeks.” The Anchors have picked up 13 points from their last five league games, the 29 year-old believes it can be the platform for a consistent run: “It was a slow start but there were a couple of sucker punches in that run, there weren’t any teams that dominated us. We slipped up a couple of times but we have hit the ground running the last couple of weeks. We’ve got to beat what is front us as we all want that promotion. We’ve got to be patient, clever to break teams down to keep picking up points home and away.” The Anchors now enter a run of seven away games in nine fixtures over the next couple of months, Shane insists all of the
10 //

squad will be needed to come through the tight fixture list: “The games come thick and fast, thankfully we have an excellent squad. One lad comes in and another goes out, we have ideal replacements all over the field, it’s nothing to worry about, the squad will get used and we’ve got to get points on the board.” “We’ve got some huge games coming up against teams at the top with the likes of Newton Aycliffe, Hebburn and North Shields, they’re the games you want to play in.” Stockton have been drawn away at National League North side Darlington FC in the Durham Challenge Cup, a side which Shane has previous experience against, both good and bad: “I’ve had some great and not so great experiences, I think I’ve played Darlo close to ten times over the seasons, in playoff semi-finals and in league games. Games against them were always over Christmas so we had a thousand plus fans watching, always competitive. stockton_townfc
Anchors TV
The Anchors enter the second round of the FA Vase at the end of November, Shane is looking forward to the competition: “It’s been a while since I played in the FA Vase, it’s a good chance for us this year, I don’t want to build people’s hopes up because anything can happen in football but we’ve got a good opportunity to do well. I’ll look forward to when the draw is made.” When asked his favourite moment in football throughout his career, Shane has lots of memories to choose from: “When we [Spennymoor Town] played MK Dons in the FA Cup First Round, and lost 3-2, that was a good experience and probably the biggest occasion.” “Getting promoted with Spennymoor to the Conference North, beating Stourbridge 1-0, that was the culmination of two years of hard work as we were beaten in the playoffs the previous year. That would be my favourite moment.”

tockton Town played out a goalless draw for the first time this campaign after a stalemate at Shildon at Dean Street. The first opportunity fell to the hosts, a free kick in a dangerous area was fired over by Aidon Heywood. Shildon had the biggest chance of the half to take the lead, the ball fell to Matthews who somehow blazed over from six yards out. The Anchors worked their way into the contest and began to make chances, Hayes’ initial shot was blocked before his second effort curled just wide. Hayes was involved further, the winger broke the offside trap but his cut back to Robinson was

intercepted before the midfielder could connect. Hayes and Robinson combined once more but the latter’s effort was blocked for a corner. Stockton’s best chance of the match fell to Henry, King broke forward and found the midfielder but his fierce effort was well saved by the Shildon number one. McWilliams was on hand to a make a crucial sliding challenge to deny Thexton a one on one opportunity. A goal mouth scramble ensued in the Stockton penalty area as Thexton, Sweet and Palmer all had efforts blocked by a resilient Anchors defence. It is Stockton’s first goalless draw since the 2019/20 season at West Auckland back in March.

POST-MATCH REACTION
ADAM NICHOLSON: “I’d take (a point) on that pitch. If you can’t get the win away from home then you make sure you don’t get beat. We dug in deep, we knew it was going to be a battle. They had a couple of chances, we had a couple of chances, but on the balance of it, I think it was a fair result. That’s my type of pitch a times, a bit of a battle and with the long balls. We take the point and move on, I think that’s five games unbeaten now, so we start and build and pick up positive results against the teams around us.” stockton_townfc

OPPOSITION PROFILE
SEAHAM RED ST AR Seaham Red Star have endured a below-par start to the season and currently reside in the league’s bottom three. Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat to West Auckland signalled a fourth league game without a win. They only have one league win to their name going into this afternoon’s game, which was a 2-0 triumph at fellow strugglers Bishop Auckland. In the summer they lost the prolific Dan Wilson to North Shields and that has shown as one of only two clubs yet to hit double figures this season. Among their squad they have some that have plied their trade in Teesside such as Thomas Bott who once played for Marske United and Jason Blackburn who had a spell at Billingham Synthonia. They have proven to be somewhat of a ‘bogey’ side for Stockton Town. Last season they denied the Anchors all three points in a 1-1 draw at the Map Group UK Stadium and the season before they completed the double with two late winners from defender Liam Gillesphey.

half-volleyed into the corner from Luke Carr’s cross. Consett missed a golden chance to go in front through Ali Alshabeeb, the striker latched onto a poor back pass but his tame effort was cleared off the line by Tom Coulthard. Just after the hour mark, King sent in a wicked cross that Jonathan Franks met at the near post to convert home. The goal bred confidence in Stockton, Adam Nicholson doubled the advantage with a dominant header from a corner. Stockton secured all three points shortly before full time, Owens found Nathan Mulligan, who took his time to round the goalkeeper and slot home for four.

POST-MATCH REACTION
JD BRIGGS: “We were quite fortunate, at times, in the first-half to not go behind, we could’ve gone in at half-time two, three or four-one down. We were very slow dealing with their corner, which led to their goal. We didn’t close it down and see the danger early enough. We had to reassess things and change how we played, we matched them up and put two up front. We were quicker getting the ball, we were quicker breaking them down. They didn’t have as much of the ball because we closed them in the right areas. We saw the problem in the first-half and changed it and it worked.” stockton_townfc

PARTING SHOT
W
IN THE LATEST ISSUE OF THE ANCHOR, WE CONCLUDE WITH OUR PHOTOGRAPHER SELECTING HIS FAVOURITE RECENT IMAGE
e conclude our latest programme with our photographer picking out one of his stand-out images from the last couple of games. In our last home game, it really was a game of two halves, but also a game the Anchors came through with three points. The game with Consett was level at the break after Shane Henry’s early strike was cancelled out by Nathan Allen’s half-volley. A change of formation and system in the
30 //
second-half saw Michael Dunwell’s men go on to score three goals inside the final half-hour, through Jonathan Franks, Adam Nicholson and Nathan Mulligan, to pick up a hugelyimportant victory. The final goal of the game was well worked from the Anchors, Jamie Owens’ reverse pass released N.Mulligan, who beat the ‘keeper and finished into the empty net. Above, you can see Nathan running away in celebration in front of the Stockton supporters. stockton.townfc
