WELCOME BACK TO THE MAP GROUP UK STADIUM FOR TONIGHT’S NORTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE MATCH AGAINST ASHINGTON
G
ood evening and a warm welcome to the MAP Group UK Stadium for our Northern League Division One game against Ashington tonight. We opened up our league campaign with a 2-2 draw against Guisborough Town on Saturday and I thought it was a fair result, I don’t think either side really deserved to win the game. We had spells in the first-half, they had short spells in the second-half. We had a chance to put the game to bed after we took the lead, but we didn’t take them and rued those missed chances. We conceded two sloppy goals, one from a set-piece, which we should be doing better from, and then a breakaway goal. Then we were pressing for an equaliser, which we got and then we couldn’t find a winner, but on reflection, it was a fair result. I think if we had got that second goal, we would’ve gone on to manage the game and probably would’ve got the three points. With Guisborough, they never give you a second and our play wasn’t really as slick as what it was against Shildon last week. That’s probably down to our opponents, so you’ve got to give them a bit of credit. We did come back level and I don’t think the lads sometimes get the credit that they deserve because they could’ve just rolled over and felt sorry for themselves after going 2-1 down. With 15 minutes left, we were getting nothing out of the game. Max has come on and put a good ball in, Tom has reacted excellently with a good finish. It shows our battling character that we’ve got and that never-say-die attitude because we could’ve rolled over and accepted defeat, but we didn’t and that’s good to see going forward. stockton_townfc

“THIS SEASON WILL BE MORE DIFFICULT. EVERYONE IS GOING TO WANT TO BEAT US, SO WE’VE GOT TO RAISE OUR STANDARDS.” We’ve got to learn that this season is going to be much more difficult than last year because we were at the top and everyone is going to want to beat us, so we’ve got to raise our standards against every team. Tonight’s going to be another physical game, with Ashington, we’ve done quite well against them since we’ve been in the Northern League, definitely won more than we’ve lost. We’re at home again and we’re confident that we can get three points and hopefully raise our game. We came in on Monday to work on a few things that we thought were wrong on Saturday and the lads took that well and took that on board. We go into every game that we play wanting to win and I do fancy ourselves to get that important three points. I know it’s a cliche in football, but we really do only take it one game at a time. We have got a squad to manage these games, it’s a busy couple of months never mind a busy week ahead, so if we wanted to change the team on Wednesday or Saturday, we know we can because we’ve got players on the sideline that would step in. Our sole focus is on Ashington right now, you never know what might happen in that game and then we’ll be looking at the Billingham Town game after tonight.

CONWAY GUIDES YOUNG ANCHORS INTO NEXT ROUND OF FA YOUTH CUP
he Under-18s progressed in the FA Youth Cup after a 4-0 win over Carlisle City. Sam Conway netted four times as the Anchors made short work of their opponents. His second goal proved to be the pick of the bunch as he robbed the full-back before bending an effort into the top corner. Coach Liam Cox said: “For most it was their first opportunity in the Youth Cup and there were a lot of nerves.” “It took a while for both teams to settle in but once we did it was comfortable.”
On Conway, Cox said: “He’s done well and deserved all four goals. His energy, work rate and movement and that second goal has done us for goal of the season.” Although Conway scored all four, it was a team effort: “It’s difficult to pick individuals out after a commanding win,” Cox said. “But Gary Mitchell up front on his own held the line well.” “Keelan Wright in midfield dominated the game from start to finish.” Next up in the FA Youth Cup, the Anchors host Gateshead.
LADIES BEGIN NEW SEASON ON SUNDAY AT HOME TO BILLINGHAM TOWN
S
tockton Town Ladies kick off their campaign this Sunday when they host Billingham Synthonia. The Anchorettes, who play in the Durham’s Development Division, were supposed to start their season last weekend at home to Lumley but the game was called off due to Covid issues. The ladies team was set up last season and they were in fifth place before the season was declared null and void. This season they start under a new coach in Dave Critchlow, who has previously been

involved with Wallsend Women. Critchlow said on his arrival: “I’m not going to say it’s been plain sailing,” “You have to do a little bit of firefighting and that’s still an enjoyable part of the job.” Sunday’s opponents, Synners, opened the season well with a 6-0 win over Newton Aycliffe. Critchlow said: “We’ve picked up a few injuries so the week break helped us. “I’m feeling confident. I think the shape of the team now from what I inherited is really good.” Sunday’s game is free entry and kicks-off at 2pm.

T OM COULTHARD Tom Coulthard is closing in on 350 appearances for Stockton Town, having broken into the first team when he was 17. Tom grabbed the all important equaliser against Guisborough on the opening day of the Northern League season, to save the Anchors a point. Here in this feature, Tom discusses pre-season, the season so far, milestones and more. On the long break due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Tom believes it took time to click back into it: “It wasn’t so bad, Michael gave us a programme that Sam wrote up for us, but I do a lot of running myself anyway. I think it just took a bit of time to click back into the fact we’re starting to go up towards competitive football, which I think showed in the first three games of pre-season. Once everything started clicking together, looking at the South Shields and Whitby games and how we started the

season, I think everyone is back in the groove of things.” On the importance of the FA Cup performance against Shildon, and sending out a message: “Definitely, we can’t just expect to turn up to games and expect to win just because there’s thoughts that we shouldn’t be in this league, it’s all said and done now [denied promotion last season], but it’s a massive point to send out to everyone that we are still here and we will carry on from where we left off last season.” Stockton drew 2-2 with Guisborough Town on Saturday, Tom believes it was important to come away with a point at the end: “Massively, ideally we would have loved to come away with the three points, but if someone offered you 2-2 with 15 minutes to go being 2-1 down, we’d have snapped their hand off for it. It’s a massive point just not getting beaten, for getting points on the board early on, one point is better than none. A lot of people expected us to win but Guisborough worked hard for their point.” On approaching 50 goals for the Anchors: “No I haven’t even looked, I’ve been at the club since I was 17, it’s normally the appearances not the goals I look at!” On nearing 350 appearances for Stockton: “It’s great, it’s a great little accolade to have as well ascaptaining the club at Wembley, I’m expecting to be at the club for many years to come and hopefully 500 shouldn’t be too far away.” When asked on his personal aims for this season: “Anyone who was in the squad for the Wembley FA Vase final would love to get back there, it’s normally a once in a lifetime opportunity but we would love to play there twice and hopefully win it.” “Promotion is massive, we feel like we should have been promoted, however they stopped the league due to Covid-19, we feel like we need to prove to people why we shouldn’t be in this league anymore. We hopefully can go up as champions but if it means second, third place, we’d take it but we want to go up as champions.

“Good FA Cup run, same as last year, all the lads and fans loved the four games, the away game at Guiseley was a great test for the lads to show where we could possibly end up playing teams like that week-in, week-out.” On the premature end to last season, and moving forward from that: “No, I think it’s all been and gone now, initially when the announcement came that they were ending the season straight away, a lot of the lads were shocked and disappointed but nothing’s going to change now, we’ve got to look forward and get the job done.” Recently, a few Northern League fixtures have been postponed due to Covid-19 worries, Tom believes we just have to concentrate on ourselves: “We can only concentrate on ourselves, it’s not good looking at other games, we will just go into every game and if any of our games are affected that’s not a problem, we’ll keep training and working on things. If our games are on, all the lads will be 100% committed and ready to play.” On the recent good record against Ashington, going into tonight’s game: “It’s a stockton_townfc
Anchors TV
blank slate, everyone has signed new players, a few players have left. I don’t think we take too much interest in that, it’s a whole new season so it’s a level playing field.” On getting the first win of the season, and pushing on: “Definitely, that first three points of that season, it’s a great kick start but not getting beaten is the massive one, so hopefully we can come away with the three points and another clean sheet for the lads.” Looking forward to the FA Cup tie against Billingham Town on Saturday: “It’s one at a game at a time, Ashington first then Billingham on Saturday, it’s always good games against them, they’ve normally got a good pitch over there. Hopefully three points tonight then hopefully we progress in the FA Cup.”

om Coulthard scored an equaliser late in the second-half as Stockton Town salvaged a point against Guisborough Town on the opening day of the 2020-21 Northern League Division One season. Stockton started brightly with Dan McWilliams at the heart of their early chances. First, he surged down the left and sent in a ball that just missed the head of Roberts. On the half hour mark, Stockton had the lead. A poor clearance from Steavens fell to Jonathan Franks who rampaged forward before threading the ball through to Roberts who made no mistake with his finish. Just before the hour mark, Goldsack, just six

minutes after missing a good chance, took his latest one to equalise for the Priorymen. He headed in Callum Martin’s corner from the right. Guisborough took a lead ten minutes after when Coleman found himself in behind and he was clinical with deft lob over the on-rushing Callum Roberts. Stockton looked to provide a response and went close when substitute Jamie Owens worked his into the box before he fired the ball over. On 77 minutes, the Anchors equalised when a freekick from Max Craggs bamboozled Steavens by striking the ball and falling straight to Coulthard who pulled out a fine finish to strike home.

POST-MATCH REACTION
MICHAEL DUNWELL: “We never really got going. I thought that once we scored that we’d step on. We had a chance to go 2-0 up when Munchie has gone in and put it wide. I think if we’d have gone two goals up then we’d have saw the game out, but credit to Guisborough, they pressed and hurried and they scored two goals, poor goals to concede, which both could’ve been stopped. The quality just wasn’t there, we said that it was just one of those days.”

OPPOSITION PROFILE
ASHINGT ON AFC Ashington were on course for their sixth successive season of a bottom half finish in Division One before the season was declared null and void. They’d won just eight games all season. They have bolstered their attack by bringing back striker Ben Harmison in this summer and wide man Bobby Taylor. Harmison scored 17 goals in 2016-17 before moving to play higher up the pyramid. Another forward player in Max Cowburn arrived, from Whickham. They had other players re-join the club. Midfielder Dean Briggs returned seven years after he left for Gateshead and Jack Butler, who spent time on dual registration from Blyth Spartans in 2018-19. The Anchors have become somewhat of a bogey team for Ashington, particularly at the Map Group UK Stadium. Since a 3-3 draw in Stockton’s first season in Division One, the Colliers have suffered five successive defeats to the Anchors on Stockton, two in the league, two in the FA Vase and one in the League Cup.

LAST TIME OUT 04.01.20 Stockton Town 2 Billingham Town 0 Stockton Town made short work of Billingham Town last season, beating their Teesside rivals by an aggregate of 8-0. In their last meeting, a packed crowd of 830 saw Kevin Hayes bag a brace in 2-0 Anchors win. The opener was the pick of the pair as Hayes produced a beautiful deft lob over a despairing dive of Brad Young.

PARTING SHOT
IN THE LATEST ISSUE OF THE ANCHOR, WE CONCLUDE WITH OUR PHOTOGRAPHER SELECTING HIS FAVOURITE IMAGE FROM THE LAST GAME
H
e’s become somewhat of a goalscoring hero these last few games and striker Mikey Roberts is the ‘parting shot’ for the second successive game. The Anchors took the lead in the first-half through Roberts, who spun away to celebrate with his teammates, in front of our photographer. The forward man has now made it two goals in as many games for his team as Stockton picked up a point at home to Guisborough Town at the weekend.
30 //
The visitors come from behind to score two goals within the space of 10 second-half minutes, but a resilient Anchors side fought back and draw level through Tom Coulthard. It was the home side that looked more likely to go on to get a winner in the final stages of the game, but the spoils were shared on the opening day of the 2020-21 Northern League Division One season. Stockton’s focus is now solely on their second league game against Ashington tonight. stockton.townfc
