DUNWELL

G

WELCOME TO THE MAP GROUP UK STADIUM FOR TODAY’S NORTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE MATCH AGAINST CONSETT

ood afternoon and a warm welcome back to the MAP Group UK Stadium for this afternoon’s Northern League Division One match against Consett. Winning breeds confidence and we’ve had three good wins in a row now, within the space of a week, three different wins really. It’s also been good to have two good training sessions this week, probably the first time we’ve been able to do that since the season started with all the games. It’s gave us a chance to work on things going into today’s game with Consett. I’m very pleased. We always knew that things we starting to change. We weren’t playing badly. We can say we’ve turned it around after a loss and a draw in the league and then the FA Cup defeat to Consett, but we didn’t play badly in those games, we just weren’t converting our chances when we got them. We’ve scored nine and conceded two goals in our last three games. It’s really pleasing and we always felt that this would happen with the quality that we’ve got in the team. We picked up three wins in a week, but now we’ve got three very tough games this next week with Consett, Hebburn Town and Shildon, so we’ll know better where we stand after that and we’ll have played 10 games by that point. We welcome Consett today and we’ve had a chance to work on things this week. We played them in the FA Cup and we were disappointed with the result because the performance was there. The clear-cut chances we had, we were just sloppy with our finishing and forward play. They’ve had two defeats, so will be wanting to put that right, but we are full of confidence and back ourselves. We’re just pleased with the way things are stockton_townfc

Anchors TV

“THEY’RE ALWAYS TIGHT GAMES BETWEEN US AND CONSETT. TWO FOOTBALLING SIDES THAT PLAY ON THE SAME SURFACE.” going, at the moment. We’re five points off the top and a point off third and we are aiming to close the gap further this next week. After the win against Northallerton, we faced Whitley Bay and I thought they started well, they pressed really high and it took us maybe 10 minutes to get into our stride, but once we did, they didn’t really trouble us. It might’ve taken a while to get the goal, but once we did, we went on to do really well and score the second. I don’t think the result was ever in doubt after we took the lead. We controlled and managed the game really well. Newcastle Benfield was the last game for the team and I think that it’s the first time in a little while that we’ve come from behind to win because we tend to score the first goal. When they did score, it can be a bit worrying close to half-time, but we responded straight away, within the space of a minute. It was a well-worked goal, which was finished off by Mikey (Roberts). He has started the season well, not just his goals, but his work-rate off the ball as well. Then Kev (Hayes) scored a wonder strike and he seems to be doing this more and more. Benfield is always a difficult place to go and it wasn’t the prettiest of performances, but it showed the other side to our game, where we can dig in deep and grind a win out.

KEVIN HAYES NAMED STOCKTON TOWN PLAYER OF THE MONTH FOR SEPTEMBER

evin Hayes has won Stockton Town player of the month for September. An online poll was carried out via the club’s official social media channels to decide the victor of the award. The 21-year-old amassed 36% of the votes to become the first award winner of the 2020-21 campaign. Kev scored three times throughout September, the late, dramatic winner at Billingham Town in the Emirates FA Cup and a

brace against Northallerton Town towards the end of the month. The winger has recently reached a couple of milestones for the Anchors, passing 150 appearances in yellow and blue, as well as notching 50 times. Kev started October how he ended September, netting a stunning winner away at Newcastle Benfield as the Anchors came from behind to win at Sam Smith’s Park. The club will also be conducting an online poll for goal of the month in the coming days.

LAST GAME OF THE SEASON, AWAY TO PENRITH, MOVED FORWARD TO OCTOBER

S

tockton Town’s trip to Penrith has been brought forward to Saturday 24 October. The game was scheduled to take place on Saturday 24 April and was set to be the final game of the season. The final game will now be a Teesside derby against Thornaby at the Map Group UK Stadium on April 17. This will be Stockton Town’s first visit to Penrith since the 2018-19 season. In February 2019, Stockton went down 3-1 despite taking the lead

through a Max Craggs freekick. Last season, the game at Penrith was never played after the season was declared null and void in March. In the game at the Map Group UK Stadium, the Anchors ran out 5-1 winners with Mikey Roberts netting a brace. The Bonny Blues have made a poor start at home this season and have lost all of their league games at Frenchfield Park.

T H E M A I N F E AT U R E

JONATHAN FRANKS Jonathan Franks began his football career at Stockton Town when the club was known as Hartburn Juniors. Franks joined Middlesbrough’s academy at the age of 11, earning international call ups from Under-15 to Under-20 level, as well as featuring in the Premier League. Jonathan’s career has featured spells at Hartlepool, Wrexham and Icelandic side IBV, with whom he played in the Europa League. In this feature, he discusses returning to the club, the season so far, fixtures coming up and more. Jonathan returned to Stockton in January, he reveals he always intended to come home: “It was really exciting, it was always part of my plan when I was at the end of my career to come back. I came back two or three years earlier than planned but that’s a good thing because I can hopefully get a

few more years out of it than I originally could have.” Shortly after his return, the Northern League season was declared null-andvoid due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Jonathan revealed his thoughts: “It was disappointing because the team was on a good run and the lads had worked really hard to get 15 points clear and looked like they were going to get promoted. It took everyone back a little bit, knowing we’ve got to do it all again. It was a little bit strange, the one good thing is we can compete in the FA Vase again. It gives us a new challenge, it’s going to be a lot harder this year as everyone is going to want to beat us, a lot more than previously, we’ve got to be ready for that.” The Anchors suffered a relatively slow start to the season, taking five points from their opening four games, but have since won nine points from their last three, Franks believed it was just a case of settling back into a rhythm: “It was strange, we hadn’t played for so long before pre-season, it was just a case of finding our feet again. We were conceding goals which we rarely did last season and we weren’t scoring either which we were [last season]. The bits in the middle were alright, in each box is where you win the games and I think that is all coming together now.” Stockton came from behind to defeat Newcastle Benfield in tricky conditions in their last game, and the winger was pleased with the reaction from the team: “It was a terrible game, the conditions weren’t great and it one was of those games where you turn up, get your points and go home, and we managed to do that. We ground it out, the lads showed good character to come from 1-0 down away from home. It took us to go behind for us to actually start playing, probably the best thing that could have happened was actually going behind because that was when we started to apply pressure again, we got the goal straight away, got

10 //

stockton.townfc

the second and then we ground it out.” Due to current Covid-19 regulations, attendances have been restricted this season, Jonathan reveals the players are missing having full crowds: “We are missing them, it would be good to have them in because they are very vocal and it gives everyone a lift. The lads, at the moment, are motivating themselves and each other but it would be good to have the fans back in as it gives us a bit more atmosphere for everyone involved. More importantly it’s a good day out for the fans. Hopefully we can get them in soon. Stockton have faced this weekend’s opponents Consett already this season, losing 1-0 to the side from County Durham in the FA Cup, Franks enjoyed the contest between the two sides: I thought it was a good game of football between two teams who want to play football the right way, two good clubs who are ran very well. I think the difference on the night was Consett scored one of their chances and we didn’t convert ours. That’s where we’ve got to be more consistent, at putting the ball in the net and stopping it at the other end. I’m expecting stockton_townfc

Anchors TV

another good game on Saturday.” The Anchors move on to a big week of football with games against The Steelmen, Hebburn and Shildon coming up, Franks is looking forward to the challenge set: “They are the games you want to play, you want to test yourself against the bigger teams who are expected to be at the top, you want to beat them and if you want to be the best you have to [beat them].” “They will be saying the same thing, they will be looking to cause us problems and beat us, it’s a tough week but it could be a positive one if we do things the right way and get the results, it could be the catalyst for us.” Having never played in the FA Vase before, Franks is looking forward to the experience: “I’m really looking forward to it, I’ve been keeping an eye on Stockton over the years, it’s a competition they want to do really well in. I’m looking forward to experiencing a new competition and it gives everyone a chance to go to Wembley if you get that for. There’s good rewards at the end of it”.

tockton Town produced a battling performance to come from behind and defeat Newcastle Benfield 2-1 in tough conditions. Unsurprisingly in tricky conditions, neither side settled in the game as both sets of players adjusted to the pitch. Tom Portas saw a couple of shots blocked on the edge of the area in Stockton’s only real attempts in the opening half hour. The hosts did take the lead just five minutes before the interval, Haley drifted inside and slotted a low effort past Callum Roberts. The goal appeared to spur the Anchors on as they equalised from kick-off, Lewis King worked his

way into the penalty area and cut back for Mikey Roberts to score for the fifth time this season. Stockton came out for the second period with fresh intent, moving the ball quicker and were rewarded inside five minutes, Hayes curled a brilliant strike into the top corner for his third goal in as many matches. Newcastle Benfield reacted and started to pressure the Stockton back line. Grainger produced two outstanding saves to deny first Jamie Owens then Nathan Mulligan, the former seeing his close-range header superbly thwarted on the goal-line. Benfield pushed for an equaliser but the Anchors held on for a third league win in a row.

POST-MATCH REACTION

MICHAEL DUNWELL: “It took us a while to get going. It was quite slow in the first-half, they stood off us quite a bit, there wasn’t really much happening. It took, probably, them to score to get a reaction and we scored straight away. We come out a lot sharper in the second-half, Kev (Hayes) has scored a great goal, it was a good move, and then we saw the game out. Jamie (Owens) could’ve probably sealed it at the end and they’ve had a couple of chances to be fair to them, they made a game of it and pressed us right to the end. I think we just edged it, with a bit of magic from Kev sealing the points.” stockton_townfc

OPPOSITION PROFILE

CONSET T AFC Consett have enjoyed a decent start to the season despite sitting in the bottom half of the league. That is due to their FA Cup run which saw them beat the Anchors in the First Qualifying Round before succumbing to a superior Marske team 6-0. In the league they have won three out of the four league games, they first tasted defeat last Tuesday when they lost 1-0 at home to Whickham. In other games, the goals have flowed with their only other away trip producing a 6-2 victory at Seaham. At home, they overcome Newcastle Benfield and West Auckland 3-2. Games between the Anchors and the Steelmen usually entertain. Consett already hold the upper hand this season with that win in the FA Cup. Last season they played out thrilling 2-2 draw at the Map Group UK Stadium and at Belle View Stockton ground out a 2-1 win. The most notable win over Consett came in 2017 when an extra-time goal sealed a 4-3 win in the FA Vase.

ordan Robinson and Lewis King were on target in the second-half to secure a 2-0 win at home against Whitley Bay, which rounds off a busy opening month to the season. Neither side created many clear-cut chances in what was a cagey first half, Jonathan Franks and Kevin Hayes each seeing shots go wide in the opening half hour. Stockton ended the first half in the ascendancy, McWilliams’ cross was deflected just out of reach of the onrushing Mikey Roberts and Nathan Mulligan. The Anchors started the second half on the front foot and within three minutes had a chance to take the lead, Hayes incisive through ball to Portas

Stockton did take the lead just over 10 minutes into the second period, Franks’ corner was ricocheted into the path of Jordan Robinson, whose initial effort was blocked but managed to slot in at the second time of asking. The Anchors stepped up a gear following the breakthrough, Mikey Roberts close range strike was well saved by the excellent Bannon. Stockton settled any nerves 15 minutes from time with a second goal, Lewis King roamed forward, took the ball in his stride before moving his way into the box and slotting under the ‘keeper from close range. Dunwell’s side saw the game through for an important three points.

POST-MATCH REACTION

JORDAN ROBINSON: “It was a really good win, we had to work hard for it. I thought we played some good stuff in the first-half, but the final ball just let us down. Then in the second-half, we moved the ball a little bit quicker, upped the tempo and got the win that we deserved in the end. I think I’ve done well so far, sometimes we’ve played two in there with one higher up. I’ve had the freedom to go forward a bit more recently and I’ve enjoyed that. I’ve got into good positions and started shooting a lot more. I’ve enjoyed getting forward more.” stockton_townfc

FROM THE MEDIA ROOM

IN THE LATEST ISSUE OF THE ANCHOR, WE CONCLUDE WITH OUR HEAD OF MEDIA PENNING A COLUMN, DISCUSSING ALL THINGS ON THE MEDIA FRONT

F

irstly, there have been quite a few changes on the media front since last season. After several conversations in the summer, I was absolutely delighted, and privileged, to have been offered the Head of Media role at the club. If you are sat reading this column, you would have already noticed one of the big changes to have happened and that was a complete rebranding and redesign of the matchday programme, not to mention each issue is now digital due to restrictions. Having a background in the game with design and programmes, it was great to be able to come in and put a stamp on this side of things. Next, I wanted to make sure my team were all on the same page and it became apparent straight away that I had hungry and very talented people in the media department here. For me, it is absolutely essential, even in the Northern League, to have a top media output, especially with clubs that are wanting to excel and progress through the leagues. Our social media output is key, whether that is through

30 //

the course of the week, with things going on at the club or any news, or whether that be on a matchday itself. We’ve got both Jamie and James on a matchday, producing content on our platforms, recording the games, providing the live stream for our clubhouse and fans that are unable to attend and written content before, during and after the game. We’ve got one of the best photographers around in Harry, who is a delight to work with and you’ll see his images in each issue. The first month of the 2020-21 season is now in the books, the feedback from supporters, both on the ground and online, has been nothing short of fantastic. It has been great for us as a media department to hear such comments because we’ve done a lot of great things in such a short space of time. However, the hard work does not stop. It does not stop from me, and never will. It does not stop from Jamie, James and Harry and we will strive to continue to deliver the best possible media output around, so that our supporters can stay close to the club during these difficult times. stockton.townfc
