WELCOME BACK TO THE MAP GROUP UK STADIUM FOR TODAY’S BUILDBASE FA VASE THIRD ROUND MATCH AGAINST SHILDON
ood afternoon and a warm welcome to the supporters here with us at today’s game and our opponents for today’s Buildbase FA Vase Third Round game. It’s been a long time since my last notes, we’ve had just one game in the last six weeks, which was the last round of the FA Vase against Charnock Richard. We gave the lads a four-week program to stick with and anyone that watched that last game, they will have saw that they stuck to that. The fitness levels were excellent and it’s difficult for everyone to not only get motivated, but to try and stay motivated when you’re only playing once every few weeks at the moment. The games that we’re playing in is the Vase games and everyone gets up for them, so that makes it a little bit easier, but still difficult playing one game in six weeks. It was even stranger because we found out on the Wednesday before that we were actually playing because they were due to play Ashington, who dropped out of the competition. We had one training session to prepare for a team that we knew nothing about because their league didn’t start until October and they had only played three league games. At the moment, you’ve just got to take what you can and just get on with it. I said in my last notes that we can’t whinge on about it, it is the same for everybody, just like Shildon, they’ve played one game in six weeks as well. Vase games are always competitive, but against Shildon it’s always extra competitive and it’ll come down to who gets that bit of luck on the day. You’ve got to ignore the negativity that’s around at the moment and try and stay stockton_townfc
Anchors TV
“IT’S A BIG GAME, PROBABLY ONE OF THE BIGGEST TIES OF THE ROUND, SO I’M SURE BOTH TEAMS WILL BE UP FOR IT.” positive and think that the competitions and leagues will get finished and not try to listen to social media at the moment, but focus on the team. I’ve got a great coaching staff around me, so we talk all the time. We’ve had five training sessions between the Charnock Richard game and this one, so we have been in contact and have been able to work on quite a lot, whereas normally you may only be able to have one training session between games. Games between both us and Shildon have always been tight and have always been close, especially last season when we were both at the top of the table. This gives a bit of an extra edge to it. We’ve already beaten them once this season, in the FA Cup, right at the start and then got a draw away at their place when they were probably the stronger team on the day. With it being the Vase, it gives it that bit extra bite, they’ll be up for it and we’ll be up for it, so it’s who wants it more on the day when it comes to these games. There’s no extra time and I’m sure neither team will want penalties, so I’m guessing both teams will go for it in the 90 minutes. This is a special competition, especially since I’ve been a manager. We want to get to the final again, we’ve said to the players that we’ve got another chance at it.

NORTHERN LEAGUE GAMES POSTPONED UNTIL AFTER NEW YEAR
he Northern League season has been suspended until Monday 4 January, 2021 at the earliest. The league campaign was due to resume on Saturday 19 December after the FA announced that clubs in Tier 3 of Government restrictions could have up to 150 spectators. However, due to the heavy restrictions on clubhouses and bars, as well as other restrictions from local councils, it has been decided to extend the suspension
of the league campaign. The Anchors haven’t been in Northern League action since Tuesday 3 November, when Michael Dunwell’s men extended their unbeaten league with a 1-0 win at Ryhope CW. The first scheduled fixture after the break is a home game against Sunderland RCA. RCA had defeated the Anchors on the third matchday of the season. Stockton Town sit second in the Division One table, six points behind leaders Hebburn Town.
ANCHORS DRAWN AWAY TO EASINGTON OR SUNDERLAND U23 IN DURHAM CHALLENGE CUP

tockton Town have been drawn away to either Easington Colliery or Sunderland AFC U23s in the Second Round of the Durham Challenge Cup. The tie is scheduled to be played on the week preceding Saturday 23 January 2021. The Anchors enjoyed a run to the Semi-Finals of the 2019-20 competition, including a memorable 2-1 victory away at Step Three opponents South Shields. Sunderland AFC U23s reached the Final of last

year’s competition, with the young Black Cats due to play Spennymoor Town before the competition was cancelled due the Covid-19 pandemic. The Anchors have enjoyed successful meetings against Easington Colliery, defeating The Green Army on penalties in the Wearside League Cup final to complete the quadruple in 2014-15. Michael Dunwell’s men also completed the double over Colliery on their way to the 2016-17 Northern League Division Two title.

JAMIE OWENS
amie Owens faces off against former club Shildon this afternoon in a competition he has come close to winning with both the Railwaymen and the Anchors. The striker, who reached 150 appearances for Stockton in the last round of the FA Vase, is hoping for a similar result against Shildon as the Anchors come away with a 3-0 victory in the FA Cup at home earlier in the season. “I’m not too worried for starters,” Owens said. “I think the lads have all stayed fit and they proved it on the first session. Shildon have always been a good team. “I used to play for them so I know they’ve got some really good players and they’ll be up there with us. I’m just hoping the game goes the way we want it to.” “Last time we played them at home we beat them 3-0 so I’m hoping they can’t deal with the pace. “That’s my outcome.”

This is the third meeting this season, last time out the pair were locked in a goalless stalemate. “This game will be a lot more pacey with better football played on a nice flat surface,” Owens said. “Hopefully it will be very good game for the fans but also it’s a game we want to get to the next round obviously.” Stockton Town beat Charnock Richard 4-2 in the last round. It was the Anchors first game in a month. “Anyone who knows football knows you’re not fully fit until you’ve played games. Anyone can do a run but you’re never going to push yourself to the same intensity as a game so it’s hard to get the levels postcovid.” Owens managed to bag himself a goal that afternoon, his third of the season. The striker believes he has struggled in front of goal recently, but the “rest of his game” has been there. “Finally I did score,” he said. “I’ve been struggling in front of goal really but the rest of my game has been very good.” During his time with Shildon, Owens had a good run to the FA Vase Semi-Final, which ended in defeat to Tunbridge Wells. “I had just joined them (Shildon) that year from Billingham Town. I was at Billingham under Carl Jarrett and Micky Dunwell. “I was very raw then as I was just young lad. I actually scored a lot of goals back then, but my overall game wasn’t as good as it is now,” Looking back on the Vase run, Owens said: “It was bit different to Stockton’s because we got a lot of away draws or replays so we were always staying away on the Friday night.” “I remember one day we woke up on the Tunbridge Wells game and it was snowed in everywhere and the game still got played.” YouTube shows the pitch was something like to the old FA Cup ties from the 1970s. “You couldn’t find your feet. “There was no football getting played it was just long ball and picking up seconds.” Shildon ended up losing that game 2-0 and headed into the second leg looking to reverse it. “Second leg we got a great start and were
10 //

3-0 up and cruising. “I thought I’ve got Wembley here and I’d brought loads of people from where I lived to watch, so that was great. “He changed me for Billy Greulich-Smith and the game just changed. “They got a lucky goal and then we got one disallowed and then unfortunately they nicked it in the last couple of minutes.” Anchors fans will be all too familiar with his last FA Vase run as Stockton Town made the final at Wembley in the 2017-18 season. Owens proved pivotal during that run as he grabbed six goals on the way. The 2-1 home win over West Auckland was the standout game for Owens who bagged a brace that day. “They were scrappy goals, but they were massively important goals,” Owens said. “That full game was comical really. “The ref went down with cramp and one of our players was stretching his hamstring trying to get his cramp out. “Then the fan runs on and attacks Dale. “Kev jumps the fence to get out the way and stockton_townfc
Anchors TV
gets sent off for trying to get out of the way. “The whole game was just mental and it was probably my favourite because so many things happened. “You could see what it meant to the lads when I scored the winner in the last dying seconds and the full management staff ran onto to the pitch and the fans.” “It was a really good day all round.” Owens scored a brace as Stockton overcame Stourport in Round 5 and was against on the scoresheet in the Quarter-Final against Windsor. The Anchors then reached Wembley when they beat Marske over two legs. Speaking of Wembley memories, Owens said “Coming out with the flames and the noise and you’ve got the game after so you notice how many fans are there,” he said. “Obviously it’s the biggest crowd I’ve played in front of. I was still playing Sunday’s then so you’re playing one week in front of 10 half-drunk from Saturday night and then a week later you’re playing in front of 30,000 at Wembley - it’s crazy.”

Charnock flew out of the blocks, Callum Roberts was called into action inside the opening exchanges, denying the visitors an early lead. The Anchors took the lead through Dan McWilliams after excellent pressure from the left back resulted in him winning the ball, driving forward and curling an effort with his right foot into the far corner. Jamie Owens doubled the hosts lead with a typically emphatic finish into the far corner with his trusted left foot. Mikey Roberts continued his

excellent goal scoring record this campaign with a thunderous strike into the top corner, his ninth goal of the season. Charnock found a way back into the match through Brad Carsley’s header, Callum Roberts was sent off for an off the ball incident in the aftermath of the goal, Mikey Roberts replaced his namesake between the posts for the final 45 minutes. Adam Nicholson rose highest from Hayes’ corner to score the Anchors fourth in the second-half and seal their passage into the Third Round. Pilgrim scored a half volley from the edge of the penalty box, but the Anchors prevailed from a competitive FA Vase tie.

POST-MATCH REACTION
MICHAEL DUNWELL: “I thought we were excellent. In the first-half, it took us about five or 10 minutes to settle, they come out and got at us, putting us under a bit of pressure, but once we got the first goal, we were the better team. We probably could’ve scored four or five in the first-half. Callum made a mistake for thier goal, which let them back in it, but for us being off for four weeks, it’s a testament to them how they’ve kept themselves in good shape. We only had one training session before this game, so we were really pleased with how we performed. In the FA Vase, it’s always just about the result.” stockton_townfc

OPPOSITION PROFILE
SHILDON AFC Last Saturday, Shildon secured their place in the Third Round of the FA Vase for the first time since 2018. Second half goals from Dean Thexton and Jack Vaulks saw off North East Counties side, Hallam FC. On their way to that game, they beat Chester-Le-Street Town at home before recording a victory against Sunderland RCA and then Bootle on the road. Shildon are one of the Northern League ‘big-hitters’ never to have won the FA Vase. The closest they come to winning the trophy was in 2013 when they lost out to Tunbridge Wells, of the Kent League, 4-3 on aggregate in the semi-finals. This is Stockton Town and Shildon’s first meeting the FA Vase, but it is their third overall in cup competitions. The two teams’ first ever game was in the Northern League Cup when Shildon beat then Division Two Stockton Town 3-0. The second meeting came earlier this season when the Anchors put up a marvellous display to win 3-0 in the FA Cup Extra-Preliminary Round.

tockton Town extended their unbeaten league run to nine matches after Max Craggs earned the side a hard-fought victory at Ryhope CW. The visitors were quick out of the blocks and could have been ahead after five minutes, Craggs found Mikey Roberts with a through ball, the striker was intercepted but the ball fell to Nathan Mulligan who uncharacteristically missed the target from close range. The Anchors did take the lead shortly afterwards, good build-up play on the left flank set up Owens to play inside to Craggs, who calmly finished into the bottom corner. Stockton were awarded a penalty when Owens

was felled in the penalty area. Nathan Mulligan stepped up but sent his spot kick over the crossbar. Callum Roberts was called into action for the first time in the second-half, saving a good effort, but Stockton stood firm for the final 20 minutes to take all three points from a ground in which they took zero from last campaign. The Anchors enter the enforced break on the back of seven wins from their last nine games, a run that has seen them rise to 2nd in the Northern League table. Michael Dunwell’s side have also picked up the same number of points after 12 games than at the same stage last season.

POST-MATCH REACTION
ADAM NICHOLSON: “I was glad to be back and we knew it was going to be a tough game, it always is to go to Ryhope. We should’ve been out of sight in the first-half, but I thought we defended well. I can’t remember Cal (Roberts) having much to do, maybe one save in the second-half, but I’m over the moon with the three points because it puts us up to second going into a month or so off. These are tough places to come to, you’ve got to mix your game up, it’s more of a battle than some of the home games. We’re on a good run and it’s going to be hard having this time off, but we’ve just got to stick in.” stockton_townfc

AWAY DAYS
DATE: 23.01.21 // NORTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE // GROUND: HILLHEADS STADIUM some memorable fixtures over the years, including the game against Hendon in the FA Amateur Cup, where 7,301 spectators packed into the ground in 1965, and some action-packed FA Vase games during their run to Wembley in four seasons.
WHITLEY BAY
DIRECTIONS From the ground, head to the A1027 and join the A19 northbound, where you will travel 31.4 miles and through the Tyne Tunnel before taking the first exit onto the A187. From Norham Road, head north and at the next roundabout, take the fourth exit onto the A191. Take the second exit onto Rake Lane and then the first exit to stay on that road. When you come to the next roundabout, take the second exit and after 0.3 miles, turn right before Whitley Bay Ice Rink and Hillheads will be straight in front. PUBLIC TRANSPORT Get on the 59 bus from the Sixth Form College stop to High Street Stand E, where you will then head to Stand T and get the X10 X-Lines bus to Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Walk to Haymarket bus station and hop on the 309 Cobalt and Coast bus to Byth and you will get off at Whitley Bay Ice Rink. The ground is situated just a two-minute walk from the bus stop.
THE OPPOSITION Whitley Bay are a club steeped in history, the fourtime FA Vase winners are currently sitting seventh in the Division One table, having played one or two games less than the teams around them. They were last in action at the end of October and exited the FA Vase at the First Qualifying Round, but they did have a good run in the FA Cup, where they eventually lost 4-2 to Blyth Spartans. LAST TIME OUT 30.09.20 Stockton Town 2 Whitley Bay 0 After a goalless first 45 minutes, Jordan Robinson broke the deadlock just after the hour mark when the midfielder followed up to strike home after his initial shot was saved. Lewis King made it two-nil when the full-back slotted under the goalkeeper to wrap up a big three points.
THE GROUND One of the most historic grounds, not just in north east non-league football, but in non-league football in general. Hillheads has played host to stockton_townfc

PARTING SHOT
I
IN THE LATEST ISSUE OF THE ANCHOR, WE CONCLUDE WITH OUR PHOTOGRAPHER SELECTING HIS FAVOURITE RECENT IMAGE
t remains uncertain times in this country and all over the world as the news broke this week that the North East would remain in tier three for the forEseeable future - until at least after the New Year. The damning news means the Northern League have decided to postpone all of their league games until after January 9, 2021 at least. Today’s game will see 150 spectators walk through the gate and support the Anchors in this huge Buildbase FA Vase
30 //
match, but many more will be watching the game from home as Michael Dunwell’s men bid to go one step closer to reaching Wembley. The parting shot in this episode is dedicated to our supporter, who continue to follow the team despite the difficult circumstances and we would like to thank each and every one of them for doing so, but also ask for them to stick with the team. We hope you enjoy today’s game. stockton.townfc
