MICHAEL

DUNWELL

WELCOME TO THE MAP GROUP UK STADIUM FOR TODAY’S NORTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE MATCH AGAINST WEST AUCKLAND TOWN

A

warm welcome back to the MAP Group UK Stadium for this afternoon’s Northern League Division One game against West Auckland Town. Going into the game, we’re looking to bounce back straight away. Tuesday’s result wasn’t the best of results, but we missed a penalty and that was probably the changing point in the game. I think if we’d have scored that, with the amount of possession we had in the game, we’d have gone on and won it. We didn’t and the goal that we conceded was sloppy, defensively. There was a few individual performances that just weren’t up to scratch, and they know that, but we will react in the game today and get it right. We’ve got to take the game to teams and got to be the first one to score because we’ve already found, just going off last season, that the longer the games go on, it then becomes more difficult. Teams are just putting 11 men behind the ball and we’re having to find a way to break them down. The longer the game goes on, like Tuesday night, RCA got a goal and we saw straight away that, that was it, they sat behind the ball wanting to keep that lead and try to catch you on the counter attack. We’re finding teams are like that. We’ve got to find a way of breaking that down and we have been, but we’ve just not had that finishing touch and bit of luck that you need. If you look at the recent games, we’ve had shots cleared off the line, hit the post and it was the same in the FA Cup game. We had three good chances against Billingham Town before they got their penalty and once they scored that, but luckily we responded straight away and scored. But still, stockton_townfc

Anchors TV

“I’M EXPECTING A TOUGH GAME TODAY. THEY’VE SIGNED SOME GOOD PLAYERS AND STRENGTHENED IN THE SUMMER.” later on in the game, they were holding out for penalties and that’s what we’re finding. That’s because of what happened last season and how well we did, teams have got a lot more respect for us and are making it a lot more difficult for us. Both ourselves, the players, supporters and people around the club might be surprised if they think we’re going to have a season like last season. The expectations are that high for us that people expect us to win every game and that doesn’t happen. You’ve got to work harder than the other team and put your chances away when you get them. We’d be panicking if we were under pressure for 90 minutes and couldn’t get out of our own half, but we’re not, we’re dominating possession and creating chances. I just want to also talk about the Emirates FA Cup, we’ve been drawn away to Consett and that’s going to be a tough game on a midweek night. You look at other teams in out league, like Bishop Auckland have got Stocksbridge away on a Tuesday night. FA Cup games should be on a Saturday, I think they could’ve put the game on the weekend and the league game on the weekday. It will be a tough game for us, it’s always a difficult place to go to and we will go there and hopefully get through.

ANCHORS DRAWN AWAY TO CONSETT IN EMIRATES FA CUP FIRST ROUND QUALIFYING

tockton Town have been drawn away to Consett AFC in the First Qualifying Round of the 2020-21 Emirates FA Cup. The tie is scheduled to be played at Belle View Stadium on Tuesday 22nd September. It will be the third Northern League opponent the Anchors have faced in this season’s competition, following their 3-0 victory over Shildon and a late 2-1 triumph over Billingham Town in the previous round. Consett defeated fellow Northern League side Ryhope CW 3-2 in the Extra Prelimi-

nary Round, before emerging victorious over Step Four opponents Ossett United after a penalty shootout, following a comeback from 2-0 down in the Preliminary Round. On the tie, manager Michael Dunwell revealed: “It’s a tough game, they are always good games against Consett whether at home or away, tough to go there on a Tuesday night but the lads will relish that. I’m sure they wouldn’t have wanted us as much as we didn’t want them but we will go there and I’m sure it will be a good game.”

KEVIN HAYES

It was typical Kevin Hayes, leading the defenders away before cutting inside and unleashing an effort into the corner, which cued pandemonium for the ‘visiting’ supporters. That was, of course, his winning goal in last weekend’s 2-1 win over Billlingham Town. “I was over the moon,” Hayes said. “Seeing the ball in the net was relief really as it was such a tough game and it could have gone either way really especially if they had scored their second penalty.” Kevin’s pace and goals have become known across the league and he has become targeted by opposition who look to stifle Stockton’s threat. “I’ve noticed a lot recently even in the pre-season whenever I got the ball there’s always two or three defenders around me and I think it’s good

thing as it lets me know that they know what I am good at. Even though they know what I am doing I can get out of tight spaces with my pace and they can’t read me.” The saying goes ‘every cloud has a silver lining’ and that proved to be with Hayes during the lockdown period. “I think it was blessing for me,” Hayes said. “Last couple of seasons I’ve come back fit but not as fit as I have this season.” “During the lockdown there wasn’t much for me to do but to train every day and I was able to get into the best shape of my life.” Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat at Sunderland RCA was disappointment for Stockton on the whole but Hayes reached a milestone of 150 appearances for the club. Some achievement for someone of just 21. It has been a remarkable time with the club that has seen him be a key figure in a promotion-winning side and an appearance at Wembley in the FA Vase Final. “It’s a pleasure,” he said. “Obviously you don’t realise and I’ve been here four seasons but it’s not something you keep track of. “When it does come up you think wow I’ve reached milestone some might not do.” “I know there’s a lot of lads who have played double the games I have but after coming back from Spennymoor getting to reach that milestone is great.” At such a young age, it’s still an early stage for Hayes’s career and it’s one that can continue at Stockton. “I want to be one of the players in a couple of years time that has the most appearances for Stockton Town because it’s a massive club and it’s going places.” “I want to be a part of that to follow the likes of Tom (Coulthard)and all those who have been there since the start I want to be in that bracket as part of the club’s history.” Two years ago saw Hayes depart Stockton for a short spell at Spennymoor Town. It was tough run, but it was a learning curve

10 //

stockton.townfc

for the winger. “I learnt a lot even though it’s obvious I didn’t play a lot when I was there.” “I think it was being in and around a group of lads who have played levels above you could always take little things from them. “Even in training with the intensity,” “I try to bring that wherever I train whether that be away from football or when I’m at football training with the lads. “It’s always good to set your standards high.” It proved to be an eye-opener for Hayes:” Another thing I took from it was football is not always sunshine and rainbows,” “Sometimes things might not go your way but it’s all about how you react.” “I think at that time I was at Spennymoor I didn’t really react to what was going on and I let that time pass me by.” “That spell at Spennymoor probably set me back but I’ve learned that you might have a few bad games and it’s not the end of the world.” Since Hayes arrived back at the club, the Anchors have managed to bring the players from higher up the pyramid to the club. Tom stockton_townfc

Anchors TV

Portas and Jonathan Franks arrived last season, while Kevin’s former team-mate Shane Henry came in from Spennymoor. “When players like that come in they set a bar,” Hayes said. “For us lads who have been since before they came in you have to step the level up,” “When Michael and JD bring these players in it’s because they want to go levels higher.” “The training sessions compared to when I first came to Stockton are completely different.” “They are a lot more intense and harder.” “It just shows the ambition of the club and how far they want to go.” Tuesday’s defeat was a set-back for Stockton but Hayes is very much eyeing promotion at the end of the season. “It’s early days and there are lot of games still to be played. “We have big squad which will be used and as a team we want to win the league.” “We just have to take it game by game and not think too far ahead because that can sometimes set you back a little bit.”

amie Owens had a first-half penalty saved as the Anchors lost for the first time this season after being edged out 1-0 away at Sunderland RCA. Both sides came into this game on the back of an FA Cup success. Stockton Town had sealed a late dramatic win over Billingham Town, while Sunderland RCA had impressively beaten Thornaby 2-0 at Teesdale Park. Stockton broke forward during the midway stage of the first half and eventually worked the ball to Hayes, who was brought down for a spot-kick. Owens stepped up and saw his kick saved by Dean, who was then alert enough to wonderfully deny Robinson on the rebound.

The game became scrappy for a spell as both sides picked up bookings. RCA’s Callum Hope saw himself carded when he brought down Shane Henry for a free-kick. From the free-kick Max Craggs tried to pick out the top corner but Dean was equal to it. Early in the second half, Sunderland RCA took the lead. Some good football saw Watts found down the left and he drilled an impressive shot past Roberts. Hayes’s cross found substitute Mikey Roberts who agonisingly saw his effort hit the post. The Anchors pressed for an equaliser, but deep into stoppage time, King’s cross was steered by Hayes, but blocked on the line.

POST-MATCH REACTION

MICHAEL DUNWELL: “We gifted them the goal. We said don’t be sloppy in the second-half and we should’ve been 1-0 up with the penalty, but that is saved and we don’t finish the rebound. We’ve huffed and puffed in the game without really creating a lot. There was balls in the box, a lot of scrambled in the area, but once you give them a goal, in the manner that we did, they’ve got something to hold onto then. A team like RCA, Swaz has them working hard and they did that. Did we deserve something from the game? Probably, but at the end of the day, we know that we weren’t good enough tonight.” stockton_townfc

OPPOSITION PROFILE

WEST AUCKLAND T OWN West Auckland finished 9th on 42 points in the null-and-void 2019/20 Northern League campaign, winning 11 of their 29 fixtures. West can claim to be the first ever ‘World Champions’ having won the Sir Thomas Lipton trophy in 1909 and 1911. West Auckland brought in right-back Jamie Cobain and attacking midfielder Mackenzie Heaney from Whitby to strengthen their squad ahead of the campaign. However, Gary Forrest’s side have suffered a difficult start to the new campaign, losing 5-0 at Shildon, 5-1 at Guisborough Town and 4-0 at Hebburn Town. Nevertheless, West are into the FA Cup First Qualifying Round, after defeating Heaton Stannington and Ashington. Stockton and West Auckland have met in some classic fixtures over the years, including the dramatic 2-1 extra-time victory over West in the 2017/18 FA Vase Fourth Round, when a Jamie Owens double took the Anchors to within sight of the Wembley Arch.

tockton Town progressed to the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup after a dramatic injury time winner from Kevin Hayes. Stockton began to create chances and were close to going ahead twice, first Mikey Roberts had a one-on-one saved then Nicholson went close to connecting to a McWilliams delivery. Billingham Town were presented with a chance to take the lead after a dubious foul was called on Tom Coulthard. Chris Emms stepped up and slotted the ‘hosts’ into the lead. The Anchors retaliated immediately from kick off, Nathan Mulligan caused the defence problems and managed to lob the goalkeeper from six yards. With 15 minutes to go, Billingham were

awarded a second spot kick after consultation between the referee and the linesman, despite originally awarding a free kick outside the box. Callum Roberts stepped up with a huge save to deny Emms’ penalty and keep the Anchors on level terms. The game opened up in the final 10 minutes as Stockton went searching for a winner, creating chance after chance but agonisingly falling short of finding the winning goal. That was until Kevin Hayes took the ball, created space for himself in the penalty area to slide the ball home and send the Anchors through to the FA Cup First Qualifying Round, cueing the somersaults.

POST-MATCH REACTION

JD BRIGGS: “It was difficult, it was a typical cup tie. We’ve said to the players before, ultimately, we’ve just got to win the game. The performance really isn’t as important as the victory and we got through. It wasn’t the easiest of victories and it was really close with them missing the penalty. However, the amount of play that we had and the amount of chances we had, we should’ve or could’ve own the game comfortably before that. That’s what cup ties are though, especially FA Cup ties. You don’t always get what you deserve.” stockton_townfc

PARTING SHOT

IN THE LATEST ISSUE OF THE ANCHOR, WE CONCLUDE WITH OUR PHOTOGRAPHER SELECTING HIS FAVOURITE IMAGE FROM THE LAST WEEK

T

his brings an end to another packed edition of our matchday programme and we conclude issue four with our photographers favourite image from the last week. After the 3-0 victory at home to Ashington a week-and-a-half ago, the Anchors have played back-to-back games on the road. Firstly, they were the ‘visitors’ against Billingham Town, despite the game being played on home territory, in the Emirates FA Cup.

30 //

This is the game where the above image was taken as Kevin Hayes wheeled away towards the near side of the ground to celebrate firing the Anchors into the next round of the FA Cup. Time was running out for both teams to find a winner, but Hayes found the bottom corner in the 90th-minute to secure the victory. Michael Dunwell’s side then travelled to Sunderland RCA during the week, but were edged out 1-0 by the hosts on Tuesday. stockton.townfc
