MICHAEL

DUNWELL

WELCOME TO THE MAP GROUP UK STADIUM FOR TODAY’S NORTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE MATCH AGAINST NORTHALLERTON TOWN

A

warm welcome back to the MAP Group UK Stadium for this afternoon’s Northern League Division One game against Northallerton Town. I’m probably a little bit frustrated to be honest, but I’m not disappointed because we’re playing well. We just haven’t got that cutting edge, at the moment, to finish our chances off at the minute, but it’s more frustrating than anything and the players are as well. I said this the other night that we just can’t be angry with the players because they’re putting everything in and so are we, but it’s just not going our way at the moment. We’re creating plenty of chances without really conceding many chances or many goals. It’s just a matter of time before that turns. You can easily say that you make your own luck, but you look at last week’s game against West Auckland and we’ve hit the bar three times, had chances cleared off the line and missed one-on-one’s. It’s not that we haven’t been here before, we had a little spell last year, around October time, where we went three or four games the same as now. With the amount of games that we have coming up, we are capable of going on a run and we are aiming to start that on Saturday. The West Auckland game last Saturday, we were left a bit speechless after the game, especially afterwards. It was silent after, we were just astonished how we hadn’t won the game, but that’s the beauty of football, it’s never over until the last kick of the game. That’s what it was, the last kick, so we’ve got to see games out and put teams to bed earlier in the game through putting our chances stockton_townfc

Anchors TV

“YOU DON’T WIN GAMES IF YOU’RE NOT SCORING GOALS AND THAT’S WHAT WE NEED TO START DOING, STARTING TODAY.” away. Moving onto Tuesday, if we had won the game, I don’t think anyone would’ve have any complaints. If you look at reports on social media, in the final 20 minutes of the game, we were on top, a lot more pressure than they did and just couldn’t get that final touch and score. It’s been the story of the last few games, but we’ve got too much quality in the squad for that to continue. The time in between games is so close, so it gives us time to put things right straight away. When there’s a large gap between games, you can think about things too much. The game against Northallerton is a bit of a derby and it’ll give us a chance to put things right. They’ve had a decent start to the season, sitting currently in the top half, and with teams in and around us playing each other as well, it gives us a chance to, I wouldn’t say catch up, but get a good result and kick on from there. Due to our success in the league last year, it’s our downfall how teams are approaching us. As we’ve shown so far, we can break teams down, but its just about getting that final touch and putting that ball into the net and also putting teams away. That’s the only thing that we’re just not doing at the moment. The sooner we start scoring goals, the better, because we’re not giving much away.

YOUNG ANCHORS BOW OUT OF FA YOUTH CUP AFTER NARROW DEFEAT TO GATESHEAD

T

he under-18s FA Youth Cup campaign was ended on Wednesday when they were beaten by Gateshead in the First Qualifying Round. The young Anchors had lots of chances throughout the game, with Gateshead goalkeeper Thomas Thebe on top form to deny both Gary Mitchell and Sam Conway. Shortly after half-time they were stung when Nelson Ogbewe broke away to score the decisive goal. Coach Liam Cox said: “I don’t think there’s going to be many teams that good at this stage of

stockton_townfc

Anchors TV

the competition that are going to be entering. It was fairly one-sided with the chances created. “From the sideline it looked like we dominated in terms of chances but they had good players and the boys up front for them were excellent.” “I think as a club we can be very proud of what we’ve just witnessed from our boys.” Defeat means the under-18s exit at the First Qualifying Round stage for the fourth successive season. The under-18s are out of action this weekend.

DAN McWILLIAMS Dan McWilliams originally joined the club at 16, and spent a year with the Anchors before moving into the Northern League. The left-back rejoined the club in the summer of 2019 from Whitby Town, and has quickly become a fan-favourite among the Stockton faithful. As he passes 50 appearances since returning to Stockton, ‘super Danny Mac’ spoke to the media team about life at the club, his favourite moments and the season so far. When asked his feelings on reaching 50 appearances for his hometown club, Dan revealed: “It’s quite a good achievement to be honest, first I was happy to get through the season injury free, it had been a while since I managed a whole season [without injuries]. To get to the 50 as quickly as I have, is testament to that and I look forward to hopefully getting to the next landmark, in hopefully

a year or so.The left-back has become a big fan favourite amongst the Stockton support, he believes the support was a big factor on his decision to return to the club: “When I first joined, one of the big things was the crowds that Stockton get, it’s just snowballed in recent times, we go to away games and sometimes have as many fans as the opposition do. It’s class to play in front of and it’s one of things you miss while all of this is going on. They’re a joy to play for.” When asked on his favourite moment in a Stockton shirt since returning home, Dan reveals there have been many memorable moments: “From a personal point of view, scoring my first goal which was at home to Shildon, in a big game which we won 1-0, people were questioning if it was an own goal, but I’m definitely claiming it! Another moment was in the FA Vase last season away at Knaresborough, when Kev banged it in the top corner in injury time to send us through, it was another of those games where we took more fans than they did. I was right behind Kev’s strike when it went into the top corner. “It was a special moment.” The Anchors have yet to hit top gear in the league so far, Dan insists it is still too early to be concerned: “It’s still early doors, if we weren’t playing well, there might be grounds for a little bit of worry. If you look at the games and performances it is fine margins. “At any level goals change games and you need little bits of luck here and there and it seems at the moment we are not taking our chances and at the other end the balls seem to be dropping against us. As soon as we can get that one performance in I think that will kick start us. The performances are there, we just need that luck and to keep knocking at the door.” Last season, Stockton only lost once in the league, whilst conceding only 14 goals all campaign, Dan believes we have set our expectations too high: “I think

10 //

stockton.townfc

stockton_townfc

last season was a freak season, to concede only 14 goals, I’ve played Northern League football for 10 years and that is unheard of. Realistically, that was never going to be achievable this year. Not to say we shouldn’t be trying, defensively we should be looking to keep clean sheets, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t, but it’s almost impossible to concede only 14 goals again. In terms of only losing once, teams are now going to come to Stockton and having the mentality of it being a cup final, teams are going to want to take the scalp of us, we’ve got to raise our game to match. Getting the first goal in games is important for us now, we conceded first at RCA and they just sat in. If we can get that first goal, it will help us as it will draw teams out a bit more, and it should hopefully suit us a little more.” On this season’s FA Cup journey: “It was disappointing to go out on Tuesday night, there was probably something there for us, you’d like to go as far as you can in the competition, especially after last year, you never know who you might have drawn in the next round. At the same time, it stockton_townfc

Anchors TV

was a good game of football, Consett will have felt they’d done enough to win. It was good to have won a couple of games for the club to get some money from the FA Cup. The big one this year is the FA Vase, so all focus now on the league and FA Vase. We don’t start in the Vase until November so hopefully by then we will have a bit of momentum to go into the competition with. On the challenge of October, with five away games, including Hebburn and Shildon: “After the start we have had, we’re almost playing catch up a little bit. That’s the beauty of the league, we’ve got these teams to play and we’ve got to fancy ourselves whoever we are playing against. It’s going to be a big October for us so we need to get our heads down and hopefully get a few positive results.”

tockton Town exited the FA Cup at the First Qualifying Round with a 1-0 defeat to Consett. Stockton had beaten Shildon and Billingham Town to progress to this stage, whilst Consett emerged victorious over Ryhope and Ossett United. The game started tight, with both sides enjoying spells of possession in a competitive opening 15 minutes. Consett began to create a few chances and were close to going ahead through Dale Pearson, the striker hitting the post from inside the area. Just before the break, a well-structured counter attack from the Anchors presented Hayes with a chance that was saved by his namesake in the

Consett goal. The visitors started the second period the brighter of the two sides, and could have taken the lead when a shot from Portas took a deflection that required a good save from the Consett ‘keeper. Consett took the lead on the hour mark when Darren Holden laid off Carr for a calm finish into the bottom corner. Stockton began to push for an equaliser, and created two good opportunities. First, Henry had an effort saved by the feet of Hayes, then Mikey Roberts had a shot cleared off the line from King’s cross. As the minutes ticked down, the Anchors couldn’t manage to find the equalising goal to bring a penalty shoot-out.

Consett: Hayes, Metz (Jakab, 80), Wilkinson, Purewal, Holden, Green, Smith, Orrell, Carr (Marriott, 85), Pearson, Alshabeeb (Cornish, 70). Subs Not Used: Mackay, Bridge, Lawson, Allen. POST-MATCH REACTION

MICHAEL DUNWELL: “The game was evenly matched. They had chances and we had chances, but they took one of their chances when they were on top. That was the difference between the two teams. If you look at the first-half, they’ve hit the post, but then Kev has got in behind twice, Franks has got in and then in the second-half, Shane has gone through, we’ve had one cleared off the line and it’s hard to have a go at them because it’s not that we’re not playing well. It’s just getting that ball in that net when we’re on top. That’s what we haven’t done in the last three games and that needs to change.” stockton_townfc

OPPOSITION PROFILE

NORTHALLERT ON T OWN Northallerton Town sit in the top ten following a solid start. With the team bottom of the league when it was declared null and void last season, they have certainly made a positive start. Their positive start can be put down to their defence, which has kept four clean sheets in six games in all competitions. This was an area they strengthened in the summer as the experienced Tommy Marron arrived from Guisborough Town and Matthew Crust came in from Thornaby via Billingham Synthonia. Up front, more experienced was added in former Pools striker Michael Rae. Last time out they beat Billingham Town 2-0 to progress in the FA Vase- revenge as Billy Town had knocked them out of the FA Cup. This is the club’s second meeting at the Map Group UK Stadium, back on the run to the Division Two title the Anchors beat Northallerton 2-0 here. Northallerton did deny Stockton a double that season with a penalty shootout win in the EA Cup Final. Last season, Stockton won twice at the Calvert Stadium - once in the FA Cup and once in the league.

94th minute penalty West Auckland cancelled out Mikey Roberts’ opening strike to salvage a point for the visitors. West had the first chance of the match, Anthony Bell broke through the Stockton defence but his effort was well saved by Callum Roberts on his 50th appearance for the Anchors. The hosts gained control of proceedings, first Hayes headed over from Franks’ cross then the winger cut inside from the right to get a shot away that was blocked. Henry was very unlucky not to put the Anchors ahead with a fierce strike that shook the crossbar and bounced away. The second half started slowly but the Anchors

picked up the tempo and created three good chances in succession; first, Nicholson hit the crossbar with a header from Hayes’ free kick. McWilliams found space on the left flank to feed Mikey Roberts who’s turn and shot was straight at the keeper, King whipped in a cross onto Roberts’ head but his flashing header was just wide. Stockton deservedly broke the deadlock just under 20 minutes from time, quick passing and movement allowed Mikey Roberts time and space to turn and slot the ball into the corner. Deep into injury time, West Auckland were awarded a spot kick for an alleged foul on Patton, who stepped up to level the game and leave the Anchors frustrated.

POST-MATCH REACTION

JD BRIGGS: “I thought we played really well throughout the game and created enough chances to win the game comfortably, but just couldn’t put them away. We were also solid and didn’t give a lot way to West Auckland. When we finally did score, which was a superb move and finish from Mikey Roberts, and I expected us to score again or at least see it through at 1-0. I though the penalty looked very soft from where we were and it was pretty much the last kick of the game, so that’s hard to take.” stockton_townfc

PARTING SHOT

IN THE LATEST ISSUE OF THE ANCHOR, WE CONCLUDE WITH OUR PHOTOGRAPHER SELECTING HIS FAVOURITE IMAGE FROM THE LAST WEEK

I

t’s now time to round off another issue of The Anchor with a ‘parting shot’ which is the stand-out image from the previous week. Stockton Town have had two games, one in the league and one in the Emirates FA Cup, since the last issue. The image above shows midfielder Shane Henry being closed down by a West Auckland Town player last weekend, a game, which the Anchors dominated in large spells.

30 //

Mikey Roberts handed the home side the lead in the second-half and it looked like the Anchors were going to get back to winning ways until West scored a penalty in the 94thminute. It was a sucker punch for the home side, who had created numerous chances, hit the woodwork on three occasions and created so many openings in the game. Stockton will be looking to get pick up a win in the league this afternoon against Northallerton. stockton.townfc
