MICHAEL

DUNWELL

WELCOME TO THE MAP GROUP UK STADIUM FOR TONIGHT’S NORTHERN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE MATCH AGAINST WHITLEY BAY

G

ood evening and a warm welcome back to the MAP Group UK Stadium for our second successive home match, tonight we play host to Whitley Bay. I’d like to start off by saying how pleasing it was to get the win at the weekend. I said after the game that it had been similar to how we had been playing for the majority of the season, but the only difference was that we put the ball in the back of the net, which was pleasing. We done that early, after Kev’s early goal, we got into our stride quite quickly and got the job done. There was a feeling of frustration that we hadn’t done it in the other games, but the overriding feeling was that it was pleasing to see us put the ball in the net. It was a good all-round performance as well, both defensively, attacking and collectively as a team. We asked them to put in a positive performance and they did. The squad morale is high, as it has been all season. They were frustrated after the previous three games, before last Saturday, because they done everything bar score. There wasn’t a lot wrong in those games for me to fault, so against Northallerton it was a bit of relief. The lads got together after the game, all socially distanced and following COVID-19 protocols. We had that planned regardless of the result and I think that was what everyone needed. There has been a bit of negativity about the place, which is what happens when the expectations are really high, especially after last season. We put that right and hopefully that can continue and we can go on a run in the league now. Hopefully we can get a bit of momentum off the back of that win over Northallerton. The stockton_townfc

Anchors TV

“PAST RESULTS DON’T MEAN ANYTHING BECAUSE WE’VE GOT TO TURN UP ON THE NIGHT AND PUT IN A PERFORMANCE TO WIN.” games are coming quite quick. We’ve got tonight’s home game against Whitley Bay, then Newcastle Benfield and then Billy Town, so we’d have had four games in 10 days and if we can put some points on the board from those games, we’ll be pushing back into that top three, which is where we want to be. Tonight I’m expecting a tough game, as I do with every game that we play. Whitley are under new management and the players will be trying to prove themselves to the new management. They’ve showed that in the last two games with the never-say-die attitude after getting two late winners and they keep going right to the very end. They’ve won their last two games at the very end, so their fitness levels will be good. We’re expecting a tough test tonight, as we do with every team in this league. We’ll just approach the game how we normally do and try to go and get those three points. Going against them at home, we’ve generally done well against Whitley here. We’ve also done well away as well, to be honest. We had our first ever FA Vase away victory against Whitley Bay a few years ago. In the past, we’ve done quite well against them, but that doesn’t mean anything because we’ve got to turn up on the night and put in a performance to get the win and an important three points.

CIERAN JACKSON DEPARTS STOCKTON AND JOINS NORTHALLERTON TOWN

he club can announce that Cieran Jackson has departed Stockton Town for Northallerton Town. The 20 year-old had joined the club from Spennymoor Town in the summer of 2019. Cieran had made 26 appearances in his first season, scoring twice for the Anchors. Jackson made his debut for the club in the 2-2 draw at Nostell MW in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round, with his first goal coming against the same opponents in the replayed fixture. The former Spennymoor Town

man had represented England at Under-18 schoolboys level when he was called up to the squad in January 2018. Cieran made his Northallerton Town debut away at the Anchors on Saturday, coming off the bench to play 60 minutes against his former club. Stockton picked up their first win in four games at the weekend after firing five goals past Northallerton. We would like to wish Cieran all the best in his future endeavours and thank him for his efforts with the Anchors.

LEWIS KING

ight-back Lewis King signed last summer for Stockton Town and recently made his 50th appearance for the Anchors. The former Hartlepool United Academy player has fit right in at the club and his pace along with full-back partner Dan McWilliams has become a synonymous part of the Stockton attack. At just 21, it’s some achievement to hit. “It’s good a milestone to hit,” King told The Anchor. “There’s a lot of players at the club like Adi and Tom who have been here for a few years now and that’s something I look to achieve as well in the future at the club.” For most keen Stockton fans it’s pretty obvious what King’s best moment has been since arriving at the club. He said: “Probably my only goal so far. “Either that or blatantly not winning the league

last year. It’s probably the goal against Thornaby on Boxing Day last year though.” It was some strike too that settled an intense Teesside derby in front of a packed Map Group UK Stadium. What we do experience such as that now in postlockdown times. King’s arrival at Stockton Town has been his first experience of Northern League. Naturally, his experience has been as expected: “It’s lot a more physical.” “Obviously playing in youth football it’s a lot more possession based where as we obviously try to do that as well but it’s a lot more physical and tackling which I’ve had to adapt to in my game.” On players that have caused difficulty, King was keeping his cards close to his chest: “Obviously there’s a couple but I can’t be naming names.” “I think team’s like Consett when they don’t play with wide wingers and they play on the inside between you and the centre-half that’s always hard to deal with.” “So I’d probably give them as the toughest opponent.” The full-back position has gained trendiness in recent seasons, especially with Trent Alexander- Arnold and Andy Robertson at Premier League Champions Liverpool. King is very much focused on himself though: “I just try to play my own game. “Obviously you do look at aspects of their game and try to look at what they do well and see if you can implement into your game to improve your play.” “I just try to play my own game and do what the manager asks week in week out.” King is very much the modern type of fullback in his overall game. Speaking on his strengths: “Probably my pace and getting forward well.” “There’s stuff I need to work on defensively but going forward and getting balls into the box are

10 //

stockton.townfc

probably where I am strongest.” Saturday’s 5-1 thrashing of Northallerton Town saw Stockton Town break three-game winless run. That brought no panic stations within the club but with such high standards brought about from last season it may have raised a few eyebrows. “I think we’re playing well,” King said on the season so far. “I think last two pre-season games against Whitby and South Shields we picked up really well and we started off really well against Shildon.” “Then we didn’t do badly against Guisborough and we had things to improve on which we picked up against Ashington and Billingham Town.” “Then we hit a bad patch but that’s going to happen.” “We picked up again Saturday and let’s see if we can kick on against Whitley Bay on Wednesday,” Like the rest of the Stockton squad, King has ambition for the future: “Individually I want to play as many games as I can. stockton_townfc

Anchors TV

“Hopefully I can chip in with more goals and assists than I do.” “Obviously collectively we want to go on and push for league titles again this year like we did last year.” “I just want to go as far as I can with Stockton.” He’s firmly feeling settled with the club: “I think playing 50 games in my first year isn’t bad at all to be fair.” “All the lads are great and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my first year. Hopefully there’s many more to come.” Before arriving at Stockton Town, King had been at the Hartlepool United academy until 16. He then had a spell in Lancashire with Premier League Burnley before moving back to the North East to play at Spennymoor Town. He said: “You’ve got to take things from other clubs.” “When you’re playing with very good players you’ve always got to look at how they play and see if you can implement that into your game. I’m just trying to be myself and play as well I can by knowing what I am good so I can focus on that during games.”

tockton Town demonstrated their true potential with a commanding 5-1 victory over Northallerton Town. Stockton started brightly and took the lead inside three minutes, McWilliams’ floated cross was taken down by Hayes and half-volleyed superbly into the top corner. The hosts continued to dominate possession and found themselves two goals up shortly after, Hayes cut inside from the right before teeing up Robinson for a calm finish into the bottom corner. The Anchors capped off a dominant 20-minute spell with a third goal, Franks’ deep free kick was headed back across goal by Nicholson, before Mikey Roberts slotted the ball home from the

angle. Hayes was gifted a second goal by a poor defensive mix up, the winger intercepted the ball on the half way line before sliding the ball home for four. Northallerton were offered a route back in to the contest with a cheap penalty, Stephenson converting from the spot. Hayes went close to netting straight from the corner flag but the Northallerton no. 1 reacted well to deny him. More chances followed as the hosts continued to dominate, Hayes was denied his hat trick by a good save, then Franks curled a shot just wide Jamie Owens added a deserved fifth goal to the scoreline with a great finish from the angle.

POST-MATCH REACTION

MICHAEL DUNWELL: “We were very good and it’s just how we’ve been playing really, but [Against Northallerton], we put the ball in the net. That’s been the difference from the last three games because I don’t think there was much difference in the performance. We just spoke about being positive all around, both on and off the pitch, because when you don’t get a win, negativity can creep in, maybe not so much in the dressing room, but outside and we don’t need that and we don’t want it either. We got an early goal and settled. The rest was a formality really.” stockton_townfc

OPPOSITION PROFILE

WHITLEY BAY Whitley Bay ended the null-and-void 2019/20 Northern League campaign in 16th place on 28 points, winning seven of their 31 fixtures. The Bay have won the FA Vase four times in their history, including a remarkable three-in-a-row from 2009 to 2011. Whitley Bay have begun their 2020/21 campaign in dramatic fashion, scoring late winners in both their league fixtures so far. Matthew Weirs netted in the 92nd minute for the Bay at Bishop Auckland, before striking the winning effort away at Sunderland RCA on Saturday. Whitley have also made good progress in the FA Cup, defeating Garforth Town, receiving a walkthrough against Dunston and causing a shock against Northern Premier League side Witton Albion, with their reward being a home tie against Blyth Spartans in the Second Qualifying Round. The Anchors last outing against Whitley Bay ended in a 1-1 draw, Jamie Owens salvaged a point for the visitors in injury time at Hillheads.

tockton Town exited the Emirates FA Cup at the First Round Qualifying stage with a 1-0 defeat to Consett. Stockton had beaten Shildon and Billingham Town to progress to this stage, whilst Consett emerged victorious over Ryhope and Ossett United. The game started tight, with both sides enjoying spells of possession in a competitive opening 15 minutes. Consett began to create a few chances and were close to going ahead through Dale Pearson, the striker hitting the post from inside the area. Just before the break, a well-structured counter attack from the Anchors presented Hayes with a chance that was saved by his namesake in the

Consett goal. The visitors started the second period the brighter of the two sides, and could have taken the lead when a shot from Portas took a deflection that required a good save from the Consett ‘keeper. Consett took the lead on the hour mark when Darren Holden laid off Carr for a calm finish into the bottom corner. Stockton began to push for an equaliser, and created two good opportunities. First, Henry had an effort saved by the feet of Hayes, then Mikey Roberts had a shot cleared off the line from King’s cross. As the minutes ticked down, the Anchors couldn’t manage to find the equalising goal to bring a penalty shoot-out.

Consett: Hayes, Metz (Jakab, 80), Wilkinson, Purewal, Holden, Green, Smith, Orrell, Carr (Marriott, 85), Pearson, Alshabeeb (Cornish, 70). Subs Not Used: Mackay, Bridge, Lawson, Allen. POST-MATCH REACTION

MICHAEL DUNWELL: “The game was evenly matched. They had chances and we had chances, but they took one of their chances when they were on top. That was the difference between the two teams. If you look at the first-half, they’ve hit the post, but then Kev has got in behind twice, Franks has got in and then in the second-half, Shane has gone through, we’ve had one cleared off the line and it’s hard to have a go at them because it’s not that we’re not playing well. It’s just getting that ball in that net when we’re on top. That’s what we haven’t done in the last three games and that needs to change.” stockton_townfc

PARTING SHOT

IN THE LATEST ISSUE OF THE ANCHOR, WE CONCLUDE WITH OUR PHOTOGRAPHER SELECTING HIS FAVOURITE IMAGE FROM THE LAST WEEK

S

tockton Town got back to winning ways at the weekend as they fired five goals past Northallerton Town at the MAP Group UK Stadium. Kevin Hayes was on target twice, including opening the scoring inside three minutes, while Jordan Robinson, Michael Roberts and Jamie Owens also got on the scoresheet. Our photographer rounds off this issue of ‘The Anchor’ with a photo of his choice from the last game or the last week. In this shot,

30 //

midfielder Tom Portas goes shoulder-toshoulder with the Northallerton player in a battle in the centre of the midfield. Portas has featured in three league games and two Emirates FA Cup games so far in the 2020-21 season. The playmaker brought up 50 appearances for the club on Saturday. The Anchors ended their run of three games without a win in all competitions with a terrific performance and the games continue to come thick and fast. stockton.townfc
