DIRECTOR’S NOTES Welcome to Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street at the Lawrence Arts Center. This production gathers its inspiration from the famous Parisian theater of the macabre, Le Théâtre du Grand-Guignol (“The Theater of the Big Puppet”). The smallest venue in Paris at the time, Le Gand-Guignol was founded in 1894 by Oscar Méténier, who planned it as a space for naturalist performance. From its opening in 1897 until its closing in 1962, it specialized in naturalistic horror shows; its name became synonymous for graphic, amoral horror entertainment. Productions at Le Grand Guignol served as a theatrical foundation for today’s splatter films. A former chapel, the theater’s previous life was evident in the boxes – which looked like confessionals – and in the angels over the orchestra. Underneath the balcony were boxes - originally built for nuns to watch church services - that were available for theatre-goers to rent during performances for an up-close experience of the bloody action and gore happening on stage. Like the slasher films it influenced, the “special effects” at Le Théâtre du Grand-Guignol were designed to be ultra realistic with the brutality of the actions taking place on stage causing the more feint of heart in the audience to faint and/or vomit during performances. Within the framework of our Grand Guignol, Sweeney Todd explores the seven deadly sins and their corresponding virtues. Blood and gore aside, it is a love story that explores vice, virtue and their relationship to human sanity in the face of injustice. Vice Virtue
