Your Letters Dear Editor, Whilst out litter picking today I met Dottie, a rescue dog from Romania, who has been kindly adopted by a lovely Stotfold resident. I was wondering if you could make a mention in The Stotfold News Magazine as it would give the rescue charity some much needed publicity - more details can be found at www.stray2me.com In Dotties instance she has had her hind legs deliberately removed, to get more sympathy for the person using her as a begging aid. The family have allowed me to pass on this picture of Dottie in the hope that it will encourage more readers to look up the charity and find out more about them.

Your Letters Dear Editor, I’m a historian writing about a woman called Sarah Anne Shaw, whose Gypsy family came Stotfold in the 18th and 19th centuries. She gave Stotfold as her place of birth on her marriage certificate, which simply means that her family was legally resident in the parish, though always on the move. She married a man called Nehemiah Perry from Strethall in NW Essex, was divorced and died (according to one published but unreferenced source) in Stotfold in 1885, possibly in a tent on Wilbury Hill where her family seems to have camped when ‘in’ Stotfold. I’m trying to verify her burial: Bedfordshire Record Office tell me there is nothing in the parish burial register for 1885. I’m hoping to find that there’s a record in a local newspaper (but which?), or another burial site – perhaps a municipal cemetery. If anyone can point me in the right direction I shall be very grateful. Martin Rose (martin.rose@magd.oxon.org)

Dear Editor, Last season my friend Eileen Gibbs purchased an SFC Bobble hat for her grandson Bay who lives in New Zealand. Bay was really pleased with the hat and his Mum Lorraine (Club Secretary Julie Longhurst’s Goddaughter) sent a picture to the Stotfold News Magazine. I decided to send Bay a full kit for his Christmas present and here is a picture of him in the kit. His Dad Steve reckons Bay is unique in that he is likely to be the only boy in New Zealand with an SFC Kit. I reckon that could well be true! Julie Longhurst

Local News SOS Appeal: Last Chance Saloon for the River Ivel
One of the world’s 225 chalk streams rises in Baldock in the Ivel Springs Nature Reserve, from where it meanders northwards via Stotfold to ultimately join the Ouse. As well as being rare and beautiful in its own right, the river Ivel is much enjoyed by the Community. The river and its surrounds, provide local people with year-round opportunity to connect with nature. Sadly, the Ivel risks being lost forever due to over-abstraction by the water company*. This year already, the water level is very low. Time is fast running out.
Appeal for Help Despite RevIvel’s persistent and determined efforts, the response of Affinity Water and the Ivel Springs, Baldock, where there should be water. Environment Agency to date has been wholly inadequate to save our river. Photo: Tony Woodman Over-abstraction in the chalk catchments and potential solutions are being addressed nationally in the regional water resource management plans. Affinity Water (AW) is part of Water Resource Southeast (WRSE) and is compiling its regional plan for the next 100 years. It is vital to be heard now. Expert help is needed to navigate the maze of “hoops” (complex procedures, technical submissions etc) to get our rare and precious chalk stream onto Affinity Water’s priority abstraction reduction list.
Currently AW abstracts (takes) about 14 .7 million litres per day; this rate exceeds the rate of recharge (natural replenishment) of the aquifer which feeds the Ivel, especially in years with low winter rainfall. The Ivel is one of the most over-abstracted chalk streams in the world. Current best practice suggests that 15% abstraction as a percentage of recharge, (c.2 million litres per day) would be sustainable to maintain a healthy river. Our river is suffering badly.
Affinity Water is obliged to supply its customers, so if abstraction were reduced as outlined above, the shortfall of about 12 million litres per day at Baldock would have to be met by other means. Affinity Water plans to import 25 million litres per day from Grafham Water (GW) by 2025 to supply its network. It is critical that the Letchworth/Baldock area gets a fair proportion of this to alleviate pressure on the Ivel. The net impact would be small as the Ivel flows into the Ouse from which GW is replenished. We need expert consultancy help to save the Ivel. John Lawson, with extensive experience and connections in this field, has agreed to work with us to help get the Ivel onto the WRSE priority abstraction reduction list. We need to raise £2,000 by 31st March 2022 to fund this necessary work. Please consider supporting our campaign by either joining RevIvel or donating any sum you wish, via our website. Community Events Whether or not you are able to contribute financially, please come along to our community events; perhaps to learn more about the river and its ecology or just enjoy a few pleasurable hours in a peaceful setting. There will be river walks, a competition for young people, litter picks and other riverside events (e.g. “Music by the River on a Summer’s Evening”). All details will soon be on the new and improved website www.revivel.org Alternatively, for further information please contact: info@revIvel.org or find us on our facebook page under ‘RevIvel Radwell’. We are also on Twitter: RevIvel@Ivelrev and Instagram: revivel_association *Note: There should be water and flow in the upper Ivel all year round as evidenced by the fact that the river used to power five watermills, enable a thriving watercress industry and supply plentiful fresh water to umpteen breweries – not to mention being renowned for its fishing e.g. pike, brown trout. (If you have pictures/ stories about the Ivel in better days, please share with us using the contact details above as this strengthens our case that in days gone by, the Ivel thrived all year round). 6

So I bet you've all been wondering who the
Cockney Rebel is?
The sign in the window of the old discount store seems to have raised a few eyebrows! Rumours of a nail bar, a tattooist and even an all you can eat Sudanese Buffet have been mentioned, but we have the skinny on what's really going on! Well, we can reveal, our High Street now has a new Barbershop, with an upstairs Vape and Dab lounge where you can sample CBD, chill and have a coffee (CBD infused of course!) as well as selling a range of normal vape oils.
After working for companies such as John Frieda, Carlo & Co, the BBC and C4 Productions, award winning British Master Barber, Matt Terry has decided to take permanent residence in the town.
The Grand Opening will be on Sunday, 3rd of April, and The Cockney Rebel will be giving free haircuts to new customers all day alongside his team, Mat and Jay, who he says are "Two of the most talented barbers I've ever had the pleasure of working with!" Harpers Vape Lounge will be opening with free samples of their medicated CBD range for you all to try too. Matt says "The Barbershop should be a hub of the local community, somewhere safe, for people to come and chill, and enjoy themselves, that's why we agreed a vape bar upstairs! It's a New Skool gentlemens place of rest and respite! I want people to feel welcome when they walk through the door." Matt also said" Every month we will be dedicating one day in where all proceeds of the teams haircuts will be given to a local charity, or just giving cause. And I'd like to get involved with the grass roots football community too! Barbering isn't just about haircuts, it's an active involvement with the local community!"
They will also be promoting discounted haircuts. Keep an eye out for the flyer that will be sent out in the April issue of the Stotfold News Magazine, giving 50% off all haircuts for all new customers as well as running some raffles for a Ps5, Mens Spa Day, and discounts with other local businesses for all their customers too!

We are pleased to welcome some new members to the group. Hopefully they will enjoy our informal mix of painting/ drawing, chat and tea.
This month showcases the work of Stotfold resident Sue Farmer Her early talent for art found outlet in designs for Roecroft PTA in the 80s and making ceramics with her own kiln. However on retirement she was able to devote more time to art and craft. She took classes at the Settlement in LGC and when covid closed these down, she took an online Masterclass supported by Fund Art. This proved to be an inspiration and Sue went on to produce and sell paintings, with a display in 2021 at Lister Hospital's LifeArt gallery. .
Sue joined Stotfold Art Group when we reopened in July 2021 and works on watercolour paintings during these sessions. Your Pet Care
written especially for the Stotfold News Magazine by Vet Melanie of Henlow Vets
Bums, tums and tails! As owners, we are the primary provider of our pets’ nutritional and exercise needs, but how often do we reflect on whether these are being met? Did you know that 50% of the nation’s cats and dogs are actually clinically overweight? What many people consider a healthy weight is actually a reflection on what we are accustomed to seeing as ‘normal’. At Henlow Veterinary Centre we regularly monitor our patients’ weight and body condition and work with owners to recommend and make changes to both diet and lifestyle where necessary.

We weigh our patients when they come to visit the surgery for routine appointments. We weigh young puppies and kittens more frequently to ensure they are growing well and we also carefully monitor weight changes in our more senior patients so that we can detect early signs of typical elderly pet diseases such as chronic kidney disease, diabetes and hyperthyroidism.
A Body Condition Score, or ‘BCS’ is a way of assessing a patients’ weight whilst taking in to account their shape and size. We consider factors such as how easily we can feel or ‘palpate’ their spine, ribs and hips, along with visible evidence that they have a ‘waistline’; we then give them a score out of 9. An ideal BCS is generally consider to be between 4-5/9. Patients with a lower score would be considered to underweight whereas a score or 5 or above would suggest obesity.
If a patient has a low BCS, it may mean that they are not getting enough nutrition TABLE TOP SALE St. Mary’s Church Hall, Church Road, from their food, or that there is an underlying Stotfold condition which needs Saturday 2 April 10.00 – 12.00 investigating. How would you score your pet? If you are concerned that your cat or dog may not be in ideal body condition, we would advise that you speak to your vet or veterinary nurse who will be able to help. They may suggest a change in diet or exercise routine, or alternatively further investigations if appropriate.

News from
Fairfield Lower School
What a month it’s been for the children at Fairfield Park Lower School – they’ve had the opportunity to be polar explorers, weather reporters, fashion designers and even investigated the uniqueness of finger prints and the role they play in investigations. All these experiences make learning come alive and are a hugely important part of our curriculum. We’ve also welcomed visitors to school and our Reception children enjoyed a puppet show experience from the Theatre of Widdershins, where the story of The Elves and the Shoemaker was retold and inspired some very creative pairs of shoes back in the classroom and Year 1 explored the History of Toys in an Interactive workshop.
While online safety is woven through lessons and learning experiences at FPLS, the children also had the opportunity to enter a school-led poster competition for Internet Safety Day, exploring the topic “All fun and games? Exploring respect and relationships online” and what this meant to them, at the age and stage of internet usage. This has been particularly relevant for our Year 3 children, who have the opportunity to join a one-to-one device scheme in the September of Year 3 and an important part of their learning is to teach the children about the way to interact with one another in an online environment – both in lessons and at home. We continue to be very proud of our children and how they have shown this term’s value – positivity – in all aspects of their day. Our Value of the month: Positivity

News from St
Mary’s Academy
February has been an eventful month where we have all learnt more about IT use and E-Safety on our Safer Internet Day held on Tuesday 8th February. We also celebrated awareness of Children’s Mental Health Week by wearing a SCARF (Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship) to school on Friday 11th.
We will be sharing ideas once again this year to celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 3rd March. The children will be invited to come into school in non-uniform with their favourite book. They can even dress as their favourite book character if they would like! Our parent’s association, the SMSA are also hoping to organise a sponsored read with prizes! This is something we really look forward to and every child will receive a free £1.00 World Book Day Voucher.
We have the first of our class assemblies by Opal Class on Friday 4th March. Diamond Class will follow on Friday 11th with Moonstone, Emerald and Crystal holding theirs on Wednesday 23rd, Friday 25th and Wednesday 30th respectively. Hopefully parents and carers of children in these classes will be allowed in to watch and enjoy the performances, if not we will video and share through Dojo. Class photographs are planned for Tuesday 8th March and Parent/Teacher Consultations are planned for the week commencing Monday 14th March.
We will once again be supporting Red Nose Day on Friday 18th March and are inviting our children to come in non-uniform clothes. We are sure we will find something fun to do on the day to raise money for this very worthwhile cause. Please look out for our donations page! On Wednesday 23rd March our Year 3 children will take part in a Faith Tour to Bedford. Here the community works together to enable the children to visit a Church, Gudwara and Mosque. The children always come back in awe of their day. The holidays will then be upon us as we break up on Friday 1st April for the Easter break. We will return for the Summer Term on Tuesday 19th April.
St Mary’s CE Academy has a memory garden at the front of the building which is used by pupils and staff at times of prayer, remembrance and reflection. We are desperately in need of a green-fingered volunteer to help look after this area. Please contact the Academy if you are interested in helping to make this garden beautiful again!

News from Roecroft
Lower School
Welcome to the Roecroft news for March, it has certainly been a challenging term for schools across the country, us included. Staff and pupil absence has meant daily changes across the building and staff have shown an exceptional display of resilience and teamwork. We are all hopeful that summer term will be a more normal one. This month we have an update from the Early Years team; EYFS Update: Over the spring term our topic in reception is 'Planet Earth and Beyond!' Our class teddy bears Freddie and Dave have been going on holiday to different countries around the world and we have received postcards from them each week, telling us about their adventures, what they have been up to and what they have seen in the different countries they have visited. Freddie and Dave began their holiday in the United Kingdom, visiting the queen. We all wrote letters to the queen to find out about where she lives and the Grenadier Guards who help to look after her and keep her safe. We made our own guards too. The bears then went to Scotland and told us all about Alexander Graham Bell who invented the telephone, so we investigated phones and made our own ones too. Next, they flew to Italy where a very popular food is pizza! We spent the week writing about, making and eating delicious pizza with our own toppings on. Freddie and Dave then flew to Greece, a country they discovered a man called Archimedes came from, so we investigated some floating and sinking, just like he did. The bears also visited India and went on a safari! They sent us some photos of themselves with tigers, peacocks and elephants and we had a go at describing some of these Indian animals and making our own peacocks too.
When the bears went to China there was a very special celebration going on, it was Chinese New Year! We celebrated this in school too, by finding out about how Chinese families prepare for and celebrate Chinese New Year. The final part of Freddie and Dave's adventure on Earth was to Australia. We enjoyed playing our own digeridoos together and looked at Aboriginal art. Freddie and Dave have now flown off into space! They are having a great time and have been to the International Space Station just like Tim Peake did. They sent us a story called 'Whatever Next' and we have been helping them plan for their mission to the moon by designing new rockets and making a list of different things they need to take with them.
We are looking forward to the rest of their adventures, finding out about the different planets and stars in our Solar System and maybe Freddie and Dave will meet some friendly aliens too! With warmest wishes, Mrs Cross

Etonbury Academy
As we approach the end of half term, I am delighted that we have been able to fulfil most activities and events despite the continuing challenges of the pandemic. The Matilda auditions are now complete, and we are awaiting the announcement of the cast and crew from our performing arts department. Watching the auditions was a sight to behold with so many students across all year groups eager to take part. Just what we have been waiting for, a whole school production to bring all our children together. We can’t wait to get the show on the road and invite our community into the school to enjoy it with us. Etonbury Juniors have been on a trip to Duxford Imperial Air Museum, and we are delighted to have received a personal letter from them thanking us for the visit and them commenting on our students excellent conduct. Our Year 6s have been invited to take part in a competition to design a garden for a housing development in Arlesey, with the winning group seeing their garden come to life. An amazing experience exploring ecology and nature. In Secondary our Year 9s have been selecting their GCSE/BTEC option choices and have been enjoying taster sessions during this half term. It’s been an excellent opportunity for them to get a real feel for the additional subjects that they can take, as well as hear from our specialist subject teachers. Students have also taken trips out to Warner Bros Studios to learn more about design and technology of film sets. In the Photography department students have been working on ‘Still Life’ and we hope to be displaying some of these across the school in the coming weeks.
Parents and staff have been working together online to discuss their child’s progress with their Mentor. This is an excellent programme involving all our children. They are assigned a member of staff to discuss their academic progress, understand what support they need and also recognise what they are achieving. The positive experience enables our staff to really get to know them, give them encouragement and keep them on track. The continued interest from prospective parents/carers in our school over these weeks has brought many into school for tours with the Principal. We are incredibly proud of everything we have achieved and are delighted with the fantastic responses we receive following their experience.
New projects in the planning stages include a student and staff wellbeing garden kindly sponsored by Bedfordshire Schools Trust. Work has also started on our Sixth Form which is really exciting news for all our community. We are also working closely with The NEED Project to set up a pop up second hand uniform shop for the Etonbury parents/carers, a huge thank you to Gordon and his team for providing this support to make it happen. We look forward to sharing more detail with you as these projects develop.

Pix Brook Academy
Its March 2022! As always, I like to take a few moments to consider the year to date and I can reflect that this term has presented some real high points punctuated by some challenges. No doubt the biggest challenge faced by all schools is the continued impact of COVID on the learning of young people. Predominantly this is caused by their absence from school when children test positive, however it is also the case that the incidence of COVID amongst staff in schools remains very high. We have staff who have had the virus more than once and on each of these occasions their absence is prolonged due to the requirement to isolate. Operating a school under these circumstances does not make life any simpler, particularly when schools are desperately trying to provide the normal pupil experience with the addition of re-enforcement lessons to address some of the significant absence all pupils have experienced in the last two years. In spite of this we have continued to provide the breadth and depth of curriculum that is so important. Days that really add something different to a young person’s education such as the Planetarium or virtual space workshop are invaluable in providing those memorable moments in the year. Beyond these events lessons continue to be delivered in a consistent and thoughtful way. Our model of collegiate planning means that all pupils, regardless of their teacher are provided with a consistent diet of lesson experiences that is not dependent on the persons delivering the lesson. In year five and six we work around a piece of literature that provides a “touchstone” to the curriculum, providing the point of reference around which to build a particular subjects curriculum. By drawing out the themes within the subject we hope to re-enforce the learning undertaken. Year seven is more traditionally secondary based and is the starting point to the achievement of formal qualifications. Continuing with the theme of maintaining the “normality” of school in anything but normal circumstances we have ensured that the range of extra-curricular activities remains high. It is fantastic to see so many pupils prepared to stay after school to play games, fixtures and other events. We have taken the decision to invest in another trampoline given the level of demand in school. A few weeks ago over 70 pupils turned up after school for trampoline club which was a little unexpected and required some nifty re-planning. The new trampoline should be here soon! We have also been undertaking additional fixtures with other schools to try to provide as many pupils as possible with the chance to represent the school beyond the usual one team.

This month’s Town Council pages are full of opportunities and dates for your diaries!
NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN You will have spotted in past editions of this magazine, that we have referred to a Neighbourhood Plan for Stotfold, but what is a Neighbourhood Plan?
Neighbourhood planning gives communities direct power to develop a shared vision for their neighbourhood and shape the development and growth of their area through the production of a land-use planning policy. Through the Neighbourhood Plan process, communities can decide where they would like new homes and business premises, and what those buildings could look like. It can also be used to protect areas of local green space. Once a Plan is ‘made’ it becomes statutory planning policy for your local area.
A Neighbourhood Plan can: • Decide where and what type of development should happen in the neighbourhood • Promote more development than is set out in the Local Plan (Central Bedfordshire Council) • Include evidence-based policies, for example on design standards that take precedence over existing policies in the Local Plan for the area A Neighbourhood Plan cannot: • Conflict with the strategic policies in the Local Plan • Be used to prevent development that is included in the Local Plan • Be prepared by a body other than a Town or Parish Council The key point is that the focus of Neighbourhood Plans must be on planning issues and the plan must be realistic.
How far have we got? A Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group has been formed, and an application submitted to Central Bedfordshire Council to designate the area for the plan as ‘Stotfold and Astwick’, which will follow the parish boundaries for both areas. The Steering Group currently has councillors and a small number of residents – we need more please! We’re looking for people who have a keen interest in the future of Stotfold, who might have useful skills they can bring to the Group, such as data analysis, report writing, social media skills. All residents can be part of the Neighbourhood Plan process - you will be consulted along the way, and then asked for your views on the final plan. The first things to start having a think about are what you like or dislike about Stotfold, what you might want to see protected or changed? When we are ready and the Stotfold & Astwick Neighbourhood Plan designation area has been approved, we will come back to you and ask you for your thoughts. In the meantime, if you are interesting in joining the Steering Group, or even if you are interested in the process but can’t give us much time, we still want to hear from you – please contact the Town Clerk on enquiries@stotfoldtowncouncil.gov.uk.
COMMONWEALTH DAY This year’s Commonwealth Day takes place on Monday 14th March, with this year’s theme ‘Delivering a Common Future’. By taking part in Commonwealth Day, we affirm our commitment to serve one another in a spirit of respect and understanding, and advancing democracy and cooperation locally, nationally and internationally. You are invited to join us at the front of the Greenacre Centre for the flag raising ceremony, which starts at 10am.
ANNUAL TOWN MEETING This year’s Annual Town Meeting will be held on Thursday 3rd March 2022, 7pm in the Oak Hall, Greenacre Centre. At this meeting, residents will have an opportunity to bring matters of concern to the council, and you will hear about the council’s activities over the last year and projects in the coming year. We will also be announcing this year’s Citizens Award recipient/s. Speakers for the meeting will be Councillor Steve Buck, Chairman of the Stotfold & Astwick Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group, and Jemma McLean of Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity on what a Neighbourhood Plan is, how it can benefit Stotfold and how you can shape the future of your town. 20

Our Beacon at the Cemetery will be lit as part of the National Beacon Lighting Ceremony during the Jubilee celebrations, and we will be holding a Thanksgiving Service at St Mary’s Church. Nearer the time, we will produce a programme of events taking place throughout Stotfold, to include events you may be organising yourselves, so please contact us on enquiries@stotfoldtowncouncil.gov.uk
WHO DOES WHAT? Did you know, you can report faults such as street lighting, potholes, etc through ‘Fix My Street’ (www.fixmystreet.com). These matters fall within the remit of Central Bedfordshire Council, but where there are issues regarding Town Council owned streetlights (they have our logo on them with an ‘S’ and a column number), or issues with litter bins in recreation grounds around the town, you can report to the Town Council on enquiries@stotfoldtowncouncil.gov.uk or phone 01462 730064. Stotfold Town Council and Central Bedfordshire Council are responsible for different things. These are examples of just some of the responsibilities for each council. To find out more, visit www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk and www.stotfoldtowncouncil.gov.uk
RIVERSIDE PLAYING FIELD Last year, we asked you for your views on the current condition of Riverside Playing Field and its facilities. Thank you for a great response, we have collated your views and are now considering options to improve the area. It is likely that a project will be phased, possibly over a couple of years, as we have to make sure we have funding secured. It is our intention to provide an improved Riverside Playing Field site, which is welcoming to all ages, and which respects its lovely location alongside the River Ivel and surrounding countryside.
SCHEDULED MEETINGS Meetings scheduled for March 2022 are as follows: Council 2nd, Recreation Grounds, Public Lands & Lighting 13th, Cemetery Management Committee 16th, Buildings Management Committee 16th. Planning Committee meetings are held on a Wednesday as necessary (usually fortnightly). Location: Council Chamber, Greenacre Centre, Valerian Way, at 7.00pm, except where one meeting follows another. If there are no items for the agenda, meetings may be cancelled. Agendas for upcoming meetings are available on our website and Greenacre Centre notice board. 21

On behalf of myself and my daughters, may I express our sincere gratitude for the countless cards and messages of sympathy and condolence that we have received following the death of our beloved Anne.
The tributes paid in your last issue for her activities in the community were extremely kind, generous and heart-warming during a sad time for us but by far the greatest sign of approbation was the countless number of people who attended the service in celebration of her life at St Mary’s Church. Our thanks to the Revd. Bill Britt and all those who came to share in this remembrance of Anne. Pat, Roanna and Lizzie

Special Feature
Kathy Maxwell. I’m writing this in memory of our dear mother Kathy Maxwell who passed away on the 1st March 2021 from Covid. I am also thinking of all those who lost family or friends in the middle of the pandemic or to Covid. When someone passes the grief and stress is enough on it’s own. But during Covid the not being able to see them, be with them, together with not being allowed to visit them at the chapel of rest and then the further restrictions at the church, cemetery or crematorium made the grieving process all the harder for us and I am sure others. She was an amazing Mum to my brother Allan and myself. Widowed many years ago her life was her family, she loved our wives as they were her own daughters and lived for all her grandchildren. For those who know mum, she was passionate, stubborn, opinionated but cared deeply for those she knew or met and above all else loved her family. She could never do enough or give enough, we came first before herself. We all have so many wonderful memories with her. We received so many cards of sympathy from people, a lot of whom we didn’t know or knew the name but not the face. Her funeral was a celebration of her life and we also tried to thank those that had been in or were part of her life. This was difficult with restrictions so I would again like to thank the following, To her wonderful neighbours in Trinity Road, to all mum’s friends who came along and to those that couldn’t be there. To family that couldn’t attend. To those who live round the green at Trinity Road, particularly Isobel, Mick, Sue North and the lady unknown to me that picked up her prescriptions now and then. The ladies that came out and stood on the green the day of her funeral. Mums and toddlers years back, to anyone at cards, scrabble, exercise classes, the Friday club, the Monday club. To the good neighbour’s group, she enjoyed helping where she could. Also, to anyone else we don’t know about that had a part in her life over the last few years. Then finally, to Nigel “Mr Darcy” and his team at Benedict funeral directors. Thank you. David, Allan, Joella, Carol, James, Becca and Alex. “The Maxwells” At the time we donated money to the Garden House Hospice in Letchworth who helped my father so long ago and many other families since. If you knew mum, or maybe just know someone who was affected or lost family due to Covid and would like to donate something to the Garden House Hospice please do so at the “just giving page” below or contact them directly.

News from King’s
Baptist Church
It's March, so it must be Spring! We have come through the cold anddarkness of winter, and we look forward to brighter and warmer days. We expect to see flowers blooming, trees budding. In nature, it seems that new life always emerges in the spring. Plants, tree or shrubs that were mercilessly pruned, or damaged by storms, or appeared completely lifeless during winter’s icy grip, will emerge victorious once more. Reluctant gardeners will soon find themselves overwhelmed by the abundance of new growth if they don’t keep up!
God’s gift of new life to us, of course, is not an annual event. The Bible reminds us that “the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning.” And Jesus himself said that he came to earth so that we “can have real and eternal life, more and better life than ever dreamed of.” Other ways of understanding this include fullness of life, or abundant life. Jesus also speaks of eternal life. This is not the kind of life that blossoms in the spring but fades by winter, but is something profoundly different. He speaks of life unending, life eternal. The apostle Paul wrote to the Christians in Rome that “eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” is “the free gift of God.” This isn’t something we can earn for ourselves, but it is a gift, freely given. This is what Jesus meant when he said “Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” This is the only way we can know the comforting presence and the life-changing power of God in our lives.

News from Stotfold
Methodist Church
Have your cake and Lent it The second of March, this year, is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Christian season of Lent. This is traditionally a time for people to abstain from certain things, to help them prepare for the story of Holy Week, Good Friday and Easter (11-17 April 2022). It is ironic then, perhaps, that the chapel is providing opportunity to enjoy cake and hot drinks just a few days into Lent. But in these days, Christian believers are encouraged, not to give up things, but to take on new things as a daily discipline for these six and a half weeks. It might be reading from the Bible (such as the Gospel of Mark) or another devotional book or raising awareness for a just cause or simply saying a kind word. Doing something every day takes dedication but gives great reward. If you are interested in daily reading, then why not use the free devotional resource from the Methodist relief and development fund? It is available at https://www.allwecan.org.uk/lentdevotional2022/ Whatever you decide to do, please join us at the coffee morning on the first Saturday of the month, 10am, 5th March. If you have given up cake, then you can always buy one for a friend! Monday Club extends a warm welcome for new friends, 2pm to 3:30pm every week, with Scrabble and refreshments. We also welcome you to Sunday worship, 10am to 11am, with refreshments after. Our preachers in March are: 6th : Jennifer Rogers 13th : Helen Dearn 20th : Rev Graham Claydon-Knights (Holy Communion) 27th : Mothering Sunday service. Preacher Andy Searle. Revd.
