From the Editor From the Editor Welcome to our November issue..

Remember, remember...it’s that time of the year again! Stotfold Football Club are delighted to welcome you to their new Arlesey Road ground this year for their annual firework display. However you choose to celebrate please remember to look after your pets and offer them extra comfort at what can be a very unsettling time for them. You can find some tips on how to keep them happy on page 23, kindly written for us by Anna at Henlow Vets. We are very excited this month to introduce something to you all that we have been looking to include for some time now - a monthly quiz!! We are most fortunate to have acquired the services of David Stedman, Stotfold’s self confessed Brain of Britain. David will be supplying us with a new quiz each month, all with a theme to help you with the answers. We hope you enjoy this bit of fun and opportunity to stretch the grey matter somewhat! Thank you David for kindly agreeing to compile this for us each month, we look forward to hearing what you all think of it! We had a fabulous time at the Working Steam event back in October - thank you to the Mill team for putting on such a fantastic event - you can read all about it on pages 6 & 7 of this issue congratulations to Olivia and Poppy, the winners of our giant bear (below) and to Christine Bartlett for winning a family pass to the Mill event in May. Lastly, we hope you enjoy reading (and keeping) the directory you will find free inside this issue. Thank you to Stotfold Town Council for facilitating this, we are certain residents will find it very useful. We were very pleased to have been asked to compile this - a mammoth task though it was! Until next month.... Joanne

Letters to the

Editor

Dear Editor,

Dear Editor,

The Eleemosynary Charity of William Field invites applications from both individuals and local voluntary organisations for a grant that will directly benefit a resident or residents in the Ecclesiastical Parish of Stotfold, which includes Fairfield.

Applications can be obtained by email from the Clerk to the Trustees jbillson@virginmedia.com or from 17 Pix Road, Stotfold, Hitchin, Herts SG5 4HY. Please note that the deadline for completed applications is 31st December 2021 at the latest.

Well I just loved the idea of putting a song on the front cover just as much as I like taking photos! So my suggestion for the tractor scene on the cover of our October edition has to be the foot-tappin' number 'Thank God I'm a Country Boy' by John Denver. It topped the charts in the seventies and is a delightfully happy song about the laid back life on the farm! I don't think our local farmers would agree with its sentiments but the song is sure to put a smile on anyone's face! Kind regards Patricia How

Your Letters Dear Editor, Thank you to the residents of Stotfold for all of your thought and effort in constructing and displaying your scarecrows for the Stotfold Scarecrow Festival 2021. I am glad that it was not our decision to pick the favourite as they were all so diverse in their themes and wonderful in their creation. From the votes the favourite was Etonbury’s 'Poseidon', the 2nd was 'Pippin Pre-School's 'Learning through play' and we also recognised 'Little Mermaid' who lived at 44 Alexander Road as the favourite living at a house. We hope to hold another Scarecrow event in the latter part of June or July 2022 Our thanks again to everyone as this event would not have been able to happen without all of your participation. St Mary the Virgin Stotfold Parish Church Editors Note - Editors Note: thank you to everyone that voted for ‘Marjorie’ (the name of our scarecrow!) we loved taking part! Dear Editor, Stotfold Short Mat Bowls Club are looking for new members, so if you are retired or free and have time on your hands on a Monday afternoon why not come along and join our friendly group for a go, a chat and a cup of tea or coffee. We meet at the Stotfold Memorial Hall in Hitchin Road from 2 pm to 4 pm. Should you have any queries please contact Vince Cristofoli on 01462 730841 or myself on 01462 733432. Dear Editor,

Many thanks, Shirley Bounds. Dear Editor, We wish to thank everyone involved in the Mill weekend, we go every year and it was wonderful to have it back after such a long time. It must take such a lot of work to make it so successful. It was so nice to see the children watching the machines working, which we watched 80 years ago. It’s so good that the steam community keep the traditions going for the future generations. The weather was beautiful to make it the perfect day! Thanks again, Eileen & Ray Minnis. Dear Editor, With Covid restrictions being lifted the Stotfold Good Neighbour Group were able to hold their annual Macmillan Coffee Morning on Wednesday 29th September 2021. This is always done in conjunction with Jo Martin and the Students from The Academy of Central Bedfordshire who not only baked some delicious cakes but also made and served tea and coffee to our clients. This is the first time that we have been able to hold a social event in 18 months and was really appreciated by everyone. In all, around 40 people were able to attend and our thanks have to go to Jo and the students who looked after us all and are a real credit to the School. Thank you also to St. Mary's Church for the use of their church hall for this occasion. The event raised £315 for the charity and we thank everyone for their contributions. Christine Bunting Stotfold Good Neighbour Group.

We just wanted to pass on a very big thank all the Stotfold Mill volunteers involved in putting on the Stotfold Mill Steam event. Really missed it during the shutdown period, we’re grateful to everyone involved in putting this show together for the benefit of us all. Beverley Underwood.

The Mill Weekend a great time had by all. The sun shone, the people came and a great weekend was had by all!

We were delighted to have been invited to take part in the Working Steam Weekend back at the beginning of October. It was the first time the event had been able to take place since 2019 and it was certainly a weekend to remember. With record attendance, the event saw thousands of people travel from miles around to enjoy all that the two days had to offer with entertainment to keep the children amused and a huge variety of craft stalls and delicious food stalls to compliment the Working Steam attractions. The steam community attracts an audience from far and wide. From our stand, which was situated just inside the Mill entrance we were able to speak to so many steam enthusiasts who were thrilled to be back attending the shows, all commenting on how well the weekend had been organised and how safe it felt to be at such a large event.

It was also lovely to see so many familiar local faces and we thank everyone that stopped by the Stotfold News Magazine stand to either take part in one of our competitions or just called by for a chat!

We hope you enjoy this selection of photographs from the weekend - huge thanks to Chris Hall for the amazing aerial shots he supplied for us to use on our facebook page which truly demonstrated the scale of the event. Congratulations to everyone involved in such a successful weekend. We can’t wait to do it all again in May 2022.

News from Stotfold A HUGE THANK YOU ….

Watermill

To everyone who turned out to support us and make our Working Steam Weekend such a fantastic success. Initial estimates suggest that the number of visitors was around 5000 and certainly the crowds on the field throughout both days looked to be well in excess of the numbers we have ever seen at this event before. Our thanks too, go to the exhibitors who came from across the country and to the many and varied traders who supported the event. All of this meant that Stotfold Mill has held one of the biggest and best visitor attractions in Bedfordshire this year. We must also record our gratitude to our Major Events Team who organised the event and to the dozens of volunteers who turned out during the weekend to ensure the enjoyment and safety of everyone. Comments received from visitors at the end of the day were all extremely appreciative.

There is no doubt that a great deal of the success in drawing in people was due to the wonderful weather throughout Saturday and much of Sunday which, of course, we cannot guarantee for all future events. The Stotfold Mill Trustees however were pleased to sign at the weekend a licence agreement with the tenant of the land and Central Beds Council that ensures the continuing use of the field for May and October events. The Trust is dependent on these two annual events to provide the funds necessary to maintain the mill and keep it open for future years. Holding the Steam Fair and Country Show in May and the Working Steam Weekend in October is only possible if we can recruit sufficient volunteers, not just at the weekends, but as members of the team to plan these shows. Critical too, we have an urgent need for some help to market and publicise the mill’s activities. Hopefully the secondary success of the event will be to attract more members from the community to offer help in securing our future. Ways that you can help may be found on our website at www.stotfoldmill.com/volunteer. From thoughts of the future to a tale from the past that might be of particular interest to any ancient, long-standing members of the Stotfold community. One afternoon a few years back, I received a request to show a man around the Mill who had worked there as a youth. It turned out that he was Laurence Smith, who along with his friend John Tooky, had worked at the Mill on weekends when they were teenagers. As I took him round the Mill, I was fascinated to learn not only of his time there but also of his subsequent career. The two lads, like a few other Stotfold youths, had been left to run the mill when Sam Randall followed some other interests about the village. He told me of crossing the river on a flimsy plank to collect hen’s eggs for Sam each day, while his partner did his best to shake him off.

Laurence was the youngest of six boys, one of whom died in action during the war. He was 12 when his father died leaving his mother to bring up five sons. With some support from a local family, he went to Bedford Modern School and then on to Wye College where, possibly based on his experience at Stotfold Mill, he studied for an Honours Degree in Agriculture. From there, he went on to Oxford University and later to a lecturer’s post at Glasgow University. During his time there he travelled widely in Africa and worked for three years with the newly independent Kenyan government. After retirement from the university, the family moved from Glasgow to Stowupland, not many miles from Wickham Market, where the hursting and gears were made that Laurence had run in the Mill as a youth. Laurence worked for a spell on behalf of the UK Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, entailing further work with countries on the African continent before heart problems enforced his full retirement. He continued to volunteer his time to work with the church in Suffolk. This highly remarkable and successful ‘son’ of Stotfold sadly died earlier this year and he was brought back to me when his wife and daughter wrote to ask if his ashes might be scattered in the nature reserve and a tree planted in his memory. This was done in midOctober and they will return in the spring with a donated bench and to plant his favourite snowdrops from his Suffolk garden. Finally in this month’s news, we are thrilled to announce that the Stotfold Nature Reserve has once again been awarded a Green Flag for outstanding public green spaces. Our very sincere thanks to members of Teasel whose hard work has made this possible.

Stotfold Gets Creative

Your chance to shop with some of our local creative, independent businesses this November. - Stotfold Creative Fair.

Stotfold is getting a little bit more creative this festive season, with the introduction of The Stotfold Creative Fair to our calendars. Brought to life by local creators, Samantha King of Samantha King Design and Kristie Furniss of Club Twenty Nine the aim of this fair is to pay homage to local creators and encourage people to shop local, something both Samantha and Kristie believe highly about. Samantha told the Stotfold News Magazine ‘We both live and work locally and always wanted to bring something creative to Stotfold. After we saw how much talent there was during the successful Walking Market we decided it would be a great idea to get lots of local sellers together in one space.”

When searching for a venue Samantha and Kristie were keen to find somewhere that not only worked logistically but was considered an integral part of the town. “The Roecroft Centre is perfect as it’s in the heart of Stotfold. It is a fantastic venue for our event and we can’t wait to see how it is going to look packed with sellers, beautiful gifts and hopefully a few fairy lights too”. The event will take place on Sunday 28th November, 11am - 4pm at The Roecroft Centre on Church Road, the fair will be jam packed with fashion, homeware, accessories, decorations, gifts, children’s toys, food, drink and lots more, including a visit from a special Disney character. In addition to the stalls, guests can enjoy hot food and drinks including a delicious S’mores hot chocolate and festive mulled wine. Entry to the event is FREE and there is parking available on site, though locals are encouraged to walk to this event. The organisers also encourage you to bring your own bags (and many of them) to reduce the need for further single use plastic. You can find out more about the event as it draws closer including updates and information on the sellers by following @stotfoldcreativefair on social media.

Local News - Update

From Teddy

We hope many readers will recall the story of Stotfold Junior player Teddy and the brace he was having to wear to help with issues with his chest. We are delighted to be able to give you an update on his progress as we spoke to Melanie, Teddy’s mother who filled us in on some incredible news: “Teddy is now 7 months into treatment. and is now being told to wear his brace for 12 hours per day instead of 16 but with an increase in pressure. He is still amazing us with his “ get on with it attitude “. and his consultant is very pleased with his progress.” she went on to add, “I still cannot begin to express our huge gratitude to everyone that contributed to the crowdfund towards Teddy’s treatment and for the kind words and support from the Stotfold community.”

News from Poppies

& Poppyfields Nursery

Autumn is a beautiful time of the year and we are loving exploring the colours, sights, sounds and smells of crisp Autumn days! As we write this we are enjoying some late sunshine which enables us to maximise our outdoor play spaces. There have been an abundance of beautiful Red Admiral butterflies about which inspired lots of lovely art and discussions! Children have been exploring autumn vegetables, making their own wonderful concoctions of ‘veggie cake’ using our mud kitchens, vegetables, scales and water. (Non-edible of course but recycled for rabbits to ensure no waste!) Children are going ‘green’ with daily recycling, learning how to help preserve the world they are living in. This theme will be continued through our Holiday Nature Camp, running from our Poppies Site during half term.

We would like to thank all our new families for their support and understanding which has helped our new children settle into nursery life. Over the past year or so, our young members of the community have been experiencing a much different way of life than we would have expected them to so we are working closely with families to provide rich experiences to fill the gaps created by lockdowns and isolations. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all at Stotfold Mill for their Steam Weekend. This is provided by volunteers, and for that we say a big thankyou! Many of our families enjoyed the sunshine of this community event!

News from Roecroft

Lower School

Welcome to this month’s Roecroft news. You will notice that each month we have reports from different year groups across the school. My senior leaders for each key stage like to share their news from the month and some of the learning that takes place in school. This month is the turn of Mr Stephen, our Year 3 phase leader and Miss Houghton, the Year 4 phase lead.

The Year 3 children returned to school after the summer holidays full of excitement and enthusiasm for starting the new school year. We started the term in English by focusing on traditional tales, followed by non-chronological reports. The children produced reports about their class birds using interesting openers and different sentence types.

In Art, we having been studying the American artist Chuck Close and his unique style of portrait painting. The children worked together to recreate a famous David Hockney picture in the style of Chuck Close. Our Science topic this term has been ‘Light and Shadow’. The children have really enjoyed the investigations linked to this topic, including the use of torches inside a dark tent, testing reflective materials and marking their shadows on the playground to investigate how they change throughout the day. 20 years experience -

In Geography, we started the term by studying the UK. We used atlases to find major rivers and cities in the country, as well as the different seas that surround us. We then moved on to the topic ‘Extreme Earth’ and learned about the layers of the earth and how volcanos form. We made models of the earth out of playdough and cut them in half to show the different layers. We then had great fun making exploding volcanos using baking soda and vinegar! With the weather in September being mostly fine and sunny, we were able to get out onto the school field in PE to work on invasion game skills and the children enjoyed playing different games in the sunshine! Our Year 4 children have had a brilliant autumn term so far. They have particularly enjoyed attending clubs in school, using the Food Technology room to make spring rolls and muffins, and learning to play tag rugby in PE lessons. They took part in an in-school tag rugby tournament too, giving them a chance to show their new skills and live our school values in a competitive environment.

This month, the children have had the opportunity to apply for Year 4 job roles including our school parliament, science council and values ambassadors and are now contributing to many areas of school life, bringing new ideas and lots of enthusiasm. Additionally, Year 4 have really enjoyed their history topic 'The Roman Empire' and have produced some wonderful nonchronological reports in English using their new-found knowledge. They have been practising their number skills in maths lessons and learnt about the Roman number system too. As always, thank you for taking the time to read our school news and another thank you is needed for all the community support we received hosting our annual open evening in October. The event was hugely missed last year, and it was wonderful to see the school full of visitors once again. Warmest wishes, Mrs Cross

This past month has flown by and everyone at Etonbury Academy is settling back into school life. It’s good to be back and see our children learning, socialising with their friends and enjoying school. We have had the pleasure of welcoming prospective parents for personal tours of the school throughout these first few weeks. The walkabouts provide them with a real sense of what we offer. We believe it is a small, compassionate and exceptional community and we hope they feel this when they walk around. We will continue with the personal tours through this term as more families set out to choose their child’s next school. Families with children moving from Year 4 into their next school are welcome to join us on Thursday 11 November 2021 for our Open Evening starting with a presentation at 5.30pm. Please do contact us if you would like to take a look around or attend our Open Evening on 01462 730391 or etaoffice@bestacademies.org.uk At the time of writing this we are looking forward to welcoming our parents into school for an information evening on our Year 5 residential trip, our ‘Starting Secondary’ evening for our Year 6 parents/carers and our ‘Next Steps’ evening for our Year 8 parents/carers. It’s a busy month, but it's really good to see our families face to face. We don’t underestimate the importance of these events especially after the distance we have had to endure during the pandemic. There have already been a number of successes across the school including Emma winning the Arlesey Town Football Club badge competition, Aqidah awarded the runner up in a National writing competition, ETA Juniors won the St Mary’s Church Scarecrow competition, Liv and Abi have been selected to play for the U13s Herts County Cricket team, Lennon playing for Cambridge United against Liverpool, Yvie and Maddie selected for the County Netball teams. Congratulations to them all.

Aiming higher is just one of our values that is embedded across both staff and students. During September we finalised our Student Leadership Team and are pleased to announce that Heidi will lead as Student Principal, Isabell and Mille Mae are appointed as Student Vice Principals, and Elias, Raul, Isabelle, Lucas and Ashlee also join the Student Leadership team. These exceptional students will play a large part in our school’s development, and have taken over from a formidable team who were awarded UK Student Voice Runner Up in 2020. October is Black History Month, led by Miss Young, and staff and students have been learning about inspirational men and women. We continue to work together to ensure equality and inclusivity is embedded across the school through the curriculum and the activities we all undertake. It is fantastic to see our whole school extra-curricular activities in full swing including choir, table tennis, yoga, debating, Boxercise, further maths, LGBTQ+, digital drawing and many, many more. The number of children exploring new interests is quite remarkable and we are really proud to have so many staff prepared to give up their own time to lead on so many different and inspiring activities. Finally, we are really grateful to our community who have kindly given up their time to offer careers talks. These provide valuable insights for our students, especially those who have no contacts in the areas themselves. Our community is really important to us, and we hope to be welcoming many more of you into the school over the coming months as we finally get back to organising our performances.

Pix Brook Academy

The first half term at PBA is complete and it has been quite the roller-coaster. Having welcomed our new pupils into the school it was amazing to see how quickly they settled and immediately felt part of the school. For any organisation the inclusion of nearly 200 hundred new faces, both staff and pupils (all on the same day), is going to take a little bit of time to get used to. We have been fantastically lucky in that not only have pupils engaged with all we have to offer enthusiastically we have also had a body of staff prepared to provide some super opportunities. I CLAIRE’S must also thank our parents and carers for giving CAT SITTING us a little latitude while we got our new systems up Stotfold based and running. cat sitting service We have had a number of firsts this half term, our first away game of football and netball, our first Your cats looked after in your goal, our first visit to the houses of parliament and our first visit of the year from a professional artist. own home while you are away, Add into the mix the inclusion of our first public speaking club, Pokémon club, dance club and a giving you complete peace of whole host of lunchtime activities, with over 300 pupils participating and you can only imagine what mind.I am fully insured & can every day has felt like! feed your cats once or twice a day. We now enter the darker months and hope that any chance of further impact by COVID-19 continues to diminish. We recognise that young people have been so dramatically hit by the pandemic. They have had hugely disrupted schooling over the last few years and it is vital that they receive some consistency and coherence from their school. At PBA we are determined to ensure that lessons are structured, classes are ordered and pupils have every chance to enjoy the whole rounded school experience that has been so difficult in the last couple of years. It is amazing to imagine that the last time our year 5 pupils had a normal year they were in year 2! In November we look forward to our Open evening. This is the first time the school will be able to have an event of this nature and be able to welcome visitors into the school. As a precaution we will be operating a slightly different schedule by asking the parents and carers of the different lower schools to arrive at different times. It is our hope that this will prevent too much mixing of groups and minimise the ongoing risk of a COVID outbreak.

News from St

Mary’s Academy

Following the October break, the children return to school on Tuesday 2nd November with a packed half term ahead.

The week starts with Amethyst Class Assembly on Friday 5th November. Due to the current COVID restrictions we are able to welcome the parents of children in Amethyst Class alongside other children in the Key Stage. Week commencing 8th November offers our Parent/Staff Consultations, and again these will be held via Zoom due to the pandemic restrictions. Although parents can chat with staff on a daily basis, this zoom session enables them to have a dedicated talk about how the children have settled in and the progress they are making. On Wednesday 10th, Wednesday 17th and Friday 19th Crystal, Coral and Moonstone Classes respectively will present their termly Assemblies to enthral their audiences.

The second school flu immunisations visit is planned for Thursday 11th November. This will cover those children not included in the first visit.

We will once again support the BBC Children In Need event planned for Friday 12th. As always, we will be inviting the children to dress up for the day to raise money for this very worthy cause! We will also be supporting the Royal British Legion through Poppy sales in school. Alongside their education, our children are enjoying the many clubs that we can now once again offer. These include Multi-skills, Football, Gymnastics, Tennis, Homework, Karate, Art, Craft, Choir, Games, Musical Theatre, Dance, Lego and Spanish. Premier Sport continues to come into school to undertake the sports training with the children and we are delighted that there has been such a tremendous response to all of our clubs. Please visit our website for all up to date events and news! So from there we will be looking forward to December with preparations beginning for the Christmas Season! November is another very busy month at St Mary’s!

Coat the chicken breast with 1 tsp smoked paprika and set aside. Put the garlic, ginger, coriander stalks and 100ml water in a small food processor or blender and blitz into a paste. Spray a non-stick saucepan with low calorie cooking spray and place over a low heat. Add the garlic paste and cook for 5 minutes, then add the ras el hanout, cinnamon, remaining smoked paprika and some black pepper and cook for a further 10 minutes, adding a splash of water if anything starts to stick. Add 500ml boiling water and the stock cube and bring to a simmer, then add the chicken breast, cover and poach gently for 10 minutes. Lift out the chicken. Add the onion, tomato puree, passata, chopped tomatoes and red pepper to the pan, plus the chickpeas including the liquid in the can. Simmer gently for 15 minutes. Shred the chicken breast using 2 forks and add to the soup along with the soy sauce, orange zest and coriander leaves. Bring back to a simmer and serve.

Ask Anna, Your local Vet

In associaltion with Henlow Vets Your local Independant Veterinary Centre With bonfire night approaching us we thought we would include something a little bit different this month - we have asked Anna for her best tips on keeping our pets happy while the firework celebrations are taking place.. I love this time of year; Autumn leaves, foggy mornings, warm fires and baths, and yet not so cold as winter. I also love Guy Fawkes night and all the fireworks and sparklers. However I know that many pet owners are dreading November 5th and all the noises, bangs and lights that come with it, so thought I’d give you some ideas on how to help your animals during the nights of festivity. St. Mary’s Church Firstly, if you have a noise sensitive animal their safety is your number one priority. So please don’t walk your dog at a time when fireworks may be let off, and keep your cats indoors on these nights. Keep windows shut and your cat flap locked. Be careful when opening the door to anyone; terrified animals will sometimes bolt out so make sure another door is shut between the animal and the door to the outside before opening it.

WINTER FAIR

ST. MARY’S CHURCH HALL CHURCH ROAD, STOTFOLD SATURDAY 6 NOVEMBER 2 – 4pm Stalls, games, raffle Come along and snap up an early Christmas present Charity No. 1131275

Make sure your pet has a safe place they can retreat to, which could be a crate, a hidey hole under the stairs, or just the kitchen or living room. It needs to be a place they’re familiar with and find reassuring, not a new place. Cats may like a cardboard box and may like it high up. Make sure there are plenty of familiar toys, blankets etc in this place. You could also use an appeasing pheremone spray or plugin in these areas such as Adaptil or Feliway. Try to keep a normal routine, maybe adding in a stodgy meal to make your dog a little Established 2010 more sleepy than usual. Turn on the TV or the radio to block out some of the noise (cats particularly like classical music) and keep curtains shut and act like normal. Don’t Fully insured & DBS checked leave your pets alone in case they panic. If your pet is calm and settled do not disturb Loving care guaranteed! them. However if they start to tremble or shake reassuring them with lots of strokes and a soothing voice may help, though for some animals this reinforces the fear. Another technique is to use distraction, by playing games or providing food puzzles or Kongs. Call Liz: 07894 561765 www.smileypets.co.uk Animals are very good at picking up our emotions, so try to keep calm yourself so anxiety is not passed onto your cat or dog! The following charity websites have some more ideas on ways to calmyour pets: Dogstrust.org.uk Cats.org.uk If you’ve tried all the above and unfortunately your animal is still exhibiting signs of stress then I’d recommend a visit to your veterinary practice. They can check that your pet does not have any underlying pain or other conditions and possibly prescribe medications that can alleviate anxiety and noise phobias.

Local News - Adam Walks Route 66 My name is Adam and I am a resident of nearby Arlesey. I have been wanting to do something for charity for sometime and when the pandemic hit I wanted those on the frontline in areas such as the NHS to have their work recognised and rewarded. I chose the NHS as my charity but as I was diagnosed with Osteoarthritis at a fairly young age, I also wanted to raise awareness of this charity also.

Conditions treated include spinal and extremity injuries, neck related headaches and sprains/strains.

We are NOW OPEN Our revised opening hours: Tues: 2pm-7pm Wed: 10am-1pm Thursday: 3pm-7pm Friday: 10am - 1pm Saturday: 10am-2pm

Due to the pandemic and finding ourselves limited to staying local, I set out to walk the virtual length of Route 66 (2231.2 miles) equating to 10k every day for a year.

I must have covered every single side street and field in and around Arlesey and Stotfold, you may have even spotted me on my travels.. After the first couple of weeks I really thought I had bitten off more than I could chew... Finding the time to get out every day whilst working long hours and having two young children has been just as hard as the physical side of the challenge. I am a long way from my £1000 target so would love to get closer to this just to give back to those who have saved so many lives this past couple of years. So far, I have walked just over 1800 miles of the 2231.2 Virtual Route 66 distance so I need to get pushing to finish by December 31st. I would love for people to check this charity link out, potentially give whatever they can or simply say hi when passing me to help spur me on. ... fingers crossed it doesnt snow too much. Do You Have A Child With Additional Needs?

What is ‘Connect’?

‘Connect’ is a support group for parents and carers of children with additional needs set up in 2017. It was set up by myself and Zoe and we are both parents of autistic children. Parents in our situation can often feel isolated, frustrated and lonely as they wait for their child to be diagnosed, when their child is diagnosed, as they cope with their child’s needs and behaviour, attend medical appointments, attend endless meetings, try to ensure that staff at school are managing their child’s needs, try to ensure that siblings are happy and safe, try to manage home and work, cope with relationship stress, deal with the masses of paperwork and attempt to look after their own mental health. We aim to provide a safe, welcoming space for parents and carers to connect with others in similar situations so that they feel less isolated and alone. We provide a listening ear, tips, advice, somewhere to share and to enjoy coffee. It is a place where lasting friendships are formed because as soon as someone walks in the room we all have something in common and ‘get it’, often where schools, friends and family can’t understand our children’s needs and how difficult life is for us.

Although the group runs from 9.00-10.30 it is informal and more of a drop in. You can come for some or all of the session and leave when you want to. Sometimes we will have a representative from an organisation such as Carers in Bedfordshire to give a short talk and answer questions. We always have books, folders of information and practical resources available for people to look at. We meet once a month during term time at King’s Baptist Church Hall in Stotfold on the first Tuesday of each month, 9.00-10.30am. We ask for a donation of £1 to cover the cost of refreshments. The group is run by me (Helen) and my two friends Zoe and Lisa. We are all parents with additional needs children and admins for the Facebook group. We don’t claim to have it all together and still need support ourselves, but wanted to reach out and help other parents in similar situations. We have a private (closed) Facebook group which currently has 335 members. To join the group please use the following link, https://www.facebook.com/groups/1417553391633857/ Please contact me on 07944 124891 if you have any problems or require further information. Art Club

Welcome to our news for November.

Heather Keys became our secretary in 2019 and approached the task with enthusiasm and efficiency, recruiting new members during lockdown.. Like many in the Art Group, she is also a crafter and card maker and sells her work locally through exhibitions, craft stalls and recently the Walking Market.

Her professional work includes flower arrangements for events, another artistic skill. Pastels artist Emily Rose provided personal tuition for a new venture. Heather recently created these lovely pastels of a Kingfisher, Robin and Tulip.

NEW Monthly Quiz Welcome the FIRST, brand new monthly Quiz compiled and presented by Stotfold’s very own Brain of Britain, David Stedman. This month’s theme is the names of TREES and FLOWERS, either contained in the question or the answer. 1 This answer is appropriate for the birth of a new quiz! What is the title of the British television drama series set mainly at Nonnatus House in the east London district of Poplar? 2 In the novel Far From The Madding Crowd, what is the name of the faithful shepherd, one of the suitors for the hand of Bathsheba Everdene? 3 What is the name of the heritage railway, a popular tourist attraction, that runs for 11 miles through West Sussex? 4 Name the American actor who, since 2009, has taken over the role of Captain James T Kirk in Star Trek movies? 5 A character named Swee’Pea, abbreviated from the term of affection Sweet Pea, is the adopted son of which cartoon character? 6 In which British stately home can you visit the Queen Elizabeth oak, so called because Queen Elizabeth I was sitting under the tree when she was told that she had become the queen? 7 The ingredients of a modern Waldorf salad are apples, grapes and celery dressed with mayonnaise. Which other ingredient is missing from this list? 8 What is the name of the American author of horror novels who combined a garden flower and a wild flower to make the title of his 1995 novel Rose Madder? 9 One of the most famous lines in British television history is: ‘Don’t tell him, Pike!’. Who played the hapless character Pike? 10 What word is missing from the opening lyrics of this 1960s smash hit record: Why do you build me up (…..) baby just to let me down, and mess me around, and then worst of all you never call baby when you say you will? 11 What name is shared by a British car model made under the Triumph marque during the 1940s and 1950s, and a very famous ship that set sail for America in 1620? 12 Her first names are Lily Rose, she is the daughter of a well-known actor, she is a singer, songwriter and actress and her UK number one singles include Smile and The Fear. What is her surname (as used professionally)? 13 What was the name of the British racing driver who won the Le Mans 24 hour race 1955 and Formula One World Champion 1958? 14 What is the title of the 1980s American comedy-drama film centred around the lives of a group of women who work in a beauty salon in southern USA and who support each other through their respective troubles in life? 15 The largest known living tree in the world is a giant sequoia in California and is named after which American civil war military officer? 16 The six-letter name of an edible perennial herbaceous plant is also a name applied to a lighter shade of chestnut horse. What name? 17 What is the title of the 1980s album, by a successful group, from which the singles I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For and One Tree Hill were taken? 18 In Britain between 1937 to 1952, a distinctive twelve sided coin was minted with a depiction of the appropriately named thrift plant on the reverse. What was the pre-decimal value in pence of this coin? 19 In a British television comedy series beginning in the 1990s, this Established 1971 character has a husband named Richard, a son named Sheridan, and two sisters named Daisy and Rose, and she insists on pronouncing her surname in an odd way! What is the name of this character? 20 The name of which region of Belgium is contained in the title of the poem from which these opening lines are taken: ‘In….fields the poppies blow, between the crosses, row on row.’? Mental Health Matters with Jo Loach Welcome to thre latest article written for the Stotfold News magazine by Joli Loach, a local counsellor with a passion for mental health. Joli has kindly agreed to supply us with her thoughts and tips on mental health issues. If you wish to communicate on a personal level with Joli please contact us and we will happily put you in contact. Transitions.

I have noticed a strong theme around transitions at the moment. We are no longer in summer but transitioning through Autumn on the way to Winter. The seasons are changing. There appears to be many personal changes for people at this time too. Whether through the pandemic or not, many people have identified areas of their lives that they wish to change. When there is no longer a desire to do what has been done before but a new way has not yet been established, there is a period of transition. This kind of movement from the known to the unknown can be very uncomfortable and even feel destabilising. It can even feel tempting to return to the familiar. This is quite natural. However, if we can find ways to tolerate the internal unease around negotiating the external changes that we seek, the rewards can be worthwhile. Self care and support are especially important strategies to maintain during any kind of transition. Mental health is more important now than ever - recognise when you need to re-adjust, take time to breathe and take stock of your own mental health, it is vitally important that we all take it just as seriously as our physical wellbeing.

News from Kings Baptist Church & Churches Together King’s Baptist Church is delighted to announce that we have a new Pastor.

Alistair Sanders has joined us and, with his wife and family, has recently moved to live in our church manse in Stotfold. Alistair has already had a rich and varied career, in, for example, Bible college teaching and in graphic design, and has been in church ministry for several years. Children are important to Alistair, he and Kathrin have four of their own and he loves to see children enjoy church life.

We are keen to see the church grow in number and spiritual strength as well as being a welcoming place for those who know very little about God, Jesus Christ or the Holy Spirit. Each Sunday morning at 10:30 we meet in the church building for just over an hour. We worship God and are encouraged by being together in his presence. We have a variety of different activities each month. Please see our website for more details or ring us on 01462 730521. kingsbaptistchurch.org.uk

Churches Together Stotfold is part of the national organisation 'Churches Together England.' With representation from St. Mary's Church, The Salvation Army, Stotfold Methodist Church and King's Baptist Church, we have worked collaboratively in Stotfold over many years.

Recently our Open the Book team started going back into our local primary schools to bring Bible stories alive! We use pre-written scripts and act out the stories in front of the children during assembly. Often we get recognised with much enthusiasm when out and about in Stotfold:'I saw you in assembly!' or 'You're in Open the Book aren't you!' During lockdown we provided the schools with pre-recorded videos after using our creative talents in other ways! They were fun to produce and the children especially loved laughing at the out-takes! However, nothing compares with being in the schools and seeing the delight of the children. We are grateful to the schools for making us so welcome!
