From the Editor From the Editor Welcome to our October issue! We are so happy this month to be including quite a few local things to do including nights out, community events and of course the fantastic Stotfold Mill event on the weekend of 8th-10th October. As usual, the Stotfold News Magazine will be at the event for the entire weekend so if you are passing do stop by to say hello. It is a great opportunity for us to meet our readers and for us to connect with our local community. Thanks to Robert Smith for sending us the photograph we have chosen to use on the front page this month when we were invited to watch the corn being cut ready in preparation for the thatcher to use at the Stotfold Mill Event in October. Inside this month’s issue you will see our local school news is back up to it’s usual strength as well as lots of reader letters and interesting articles including the chance to WIN a trilogy of books published by local Author Paul Walker (see page 23 for details.) We are thankfully to all of our regular contributors for helping us compile such an informative issue, your help is very much appreciated. Finally, thank you to both Chris and Margaret who answered our question last month regarding a suitable song choice to accompany our September front cover - you can find their suggestions on our letters page. Until next month...

Letters to the
Editor
Dear Editor,
Dear Editor,
Here is a photograph of Bay aged 6 wearing his beloved Stotfold Football Club hat, sent all the way to Waiuku, New Zealand by his lifelong Stofold residents Grandma and Grandad- Eileen and John Gibbs.
THANK YOU TO THE PEOPLE OF STOTFOLD who braved the awful weather on Bank Holiday Monday to participate in the Walking Market.
We were planning a trip to Stotfold just before Covid19 hit, so he is desperate to get to Stotfold one day and be reunited with his grandparents. We all miss them so much!
It was amazing to see such a terrific turn out on Stotfold Walkabout with friendly faces. Socially, it was a welcome to the new people who have moved into our town and a catch up socially with older residents of Stotfold who have had to isolate longer than most.
He would love this picture to pop up in their local magazine as a nice surprise!!
One would have thought that the Council and Churches together could have opened their Halls in welcome to bring a warmth and cheer to the day in support of our Town.
Thanks so much! Lorraine, Tommo and Bay. Editors note: We love this! Its wonderful that we are able to reach followers of the Stotfold News Magazine all around the world though our facebook page!
Dear Editor, Re: Harriets 4x4x4 challenge featured in your September edition I was in awe of Harriet Evans achievement and would like to congratulate her on completing her 4x4x4 challenge and raising money for The Garden House Hospice. Well done! Ian - N.H.R.R Dear Editor,
Regarding your request for a suitable song title to accompany the front cover of the September STOTFOLD NEWS I suggest 'Is this the way to Amarillo' Regards, Chris W.

People shared gazebos, made coffees/teas to warm people up, young children were looked after whilst their parents were running stalls and lots more.

Name withheld. Dear Editor, Reference the wonderful picture on the front cover of the September Stotfold News Magazine, I wonder if the Old Time Musical song ‘I’m following in father’s footsteps. would be appropriate! Here are the words to the final verse: “To follow in Father’s footsteps is a must for each boy.” “And following in father footsteps is a thing I much enjoy.” “My Mother caught me out one evening up by the West End on the spree,” “She told me where are you going’ and I answered : “I’m following in Father’s Footsteps, I’m following my dear old dad.” It was first sung by a female male impersonator called Vesta Tilley in Music halls in the late 1800’s. Dear Editor,
We would like to thank everyone who supported the Stotfold Walking Market and our stall at 26 Home Close. We sold over 70 plates of cakes by lunchtime. This together with donations given for bric-a-brac and maps, resulted in a magnificent £300 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Kind regards Bev and Bob Harrold Editors Note: A superbly organised event! Well done to all.
Dear Editor, On behalf of myself (litter picker), and a friend (on a bike), we would like to profusely apologize to the driver of a metallic blue BMW estate, who, this morning (05/09/21) felt that we had impeded his journey.

We were just heading into Astwick, by the farm, as he was exiting. Having come round a left hand bend, he saw us and we were met with a lot of hand waving, and despite his need for speed, he took the trouble to slow down, wind his window down and give us the benefit of his opinion. The good news for him is that this will be the last time I will be putting my neck on the block picking up other peoples litter on Astwick Road. My apologies to all who live in Astwick Road. Mr C Hall

Back in June we told you all about six year old Samuel and his quest to cover 140km in 16 weeks as part of a challenge he chose to set himself, raising much needed funds for SSNAP (Support of The Sick Newborns & their Parents.)
Samuels idea came after close friends of his family gave birth to twins, 16 weeks early. The charity SSNAP helped the family to get through a very tough time which is why Samuel chose to take it upon himself to help the only way he knew how. Samuel’s Mum Vicky told the Stotfold News Magazine “We are so proud of Samuel for raising such an amazing amount of money and also his little sister Chloe who was a great support to him along the way.” “In total, Samuel managed to raise a whopping £1600 for the charity!” Samuel scooted, biked and walked his way around the town in order to reach his target. Some days he was joined by friends and family and others he just pressed on, all under the watchful eye of his parents. In the UK, 1 in 10 babies need specialist care at birth. SSNAP supports sick & premature babies and their families - They provide emotional and practical support to help parents through the trauma & upheaval coping with a premature baby (or two) brings.. We are certain that every single penny raised by Samuel will be most gratefully received. Congratulations Samuel on such a wonderful achievement!

Ask Anna, Your local Vet
In associaltion with Henlow Vets Your local Independant Veterinary Centre
Hi Anna,
We have a new puppy (Labrador called Simmy) We have had him for four weeks but he seems unable to settle at night time. We have followed the advice given to us by the breeder however he still seems to need us constantly - do you have any advice for us or can you tell us how long we can expect this to go on for? Henlow Veterinary Centre 22 Bedford Road Lower Stondon Beds SG16 6EA (01462) 416416 Opening hours: Mon-Fri 8.30am - 18.30pm Sat 9am -12 noon
Hi, thank you for your question; I'm sure it is one that resonates with lots of us who have had or had puppies. I remember my first puppy being like this, and it felt like it would never end, but rest assured that this period does pass! Firstly, I would recommend that Simmy has his own safe place to go to, both in the day and at night times. This is a spot where he is left alone by family members and other animals if you have any. It needs to be inviting and comfy. A soft familiar blanket and a cuddly toy will all help. This area could be a crate, or a hidey hole under the stairs. If this isn't possible then provide a lovely bed with the toys in and make sure it's left in the same place.
24hr Emergency Service Simmy should be given treats when he goes to this place and he shouldn't be put there as a punishment.
Henlow Veterinary Centre Ltd

The next thing to do is practice leaving Simmy in his safe place for a few minutes at a time. Encourage him in with treats, then when he is settled, provide him with a chew, snuffle mat or a frozen Kong, and let him lick at it. When he's distracted walk away. DO NOT make a fuss of him before walking away, this only makes the separation worse! Gradually lengthen the amount of time that you spend away, from a few minutes to an hour, and reward Simmy when you come back if he is settled. However if he is jumping and whining only pet him when he has calmed, so you are reinforcing the positive behaviour. If you do all this in the day, its essentially the same process at night. In the time before bedtime he needs to learn to settle, and remmebr do not make a big thing of leaving! So maybe a treat, into bed, cuddles, then sit in same room whilst Simmi is in his cage, then when settled walk away. If Simmi barks in the night some people would recommend leaving him, but very young dogs do need to go out to the toilet at 2-3am. If this is the case go to him, allow him to do his business, then follow the same calm routine before going back to bed. If he whines once you put him back then you do need to leave him as this is then barking for attention. I would also recommend buying an appeasing pheremone collar or plug-in for Sammi. There is a fully reserached and proven product called Adaptil, which has no sideeffects. In combination with the above plan it will really help Sammi to adjust to his new routine more quickly.I hope the above helps and Good Luck! Anna Marshall-Brown MA VetMB CertSAM MRCVS

Watermill
Stotfold’s event of the year…..
We are all now eagerly anticipating the Working Steam Weekend at Stotfold Mill on 9th/10th October which promises to be one of Bedfordshire’s major attractions for this year. With so many annual events cancelled we are very pleased that we are able to offer this great family day out whilst ensuring that anti-covid measures are in place to safeguard our visitors. Amongst the attractions, the key features will be many steam traction engines of varying sizes from the Saunders collection and enthusiasts from further afield. The display of static engines will include some driving a circular saw large enough to cut whole tree trunks into planks, stone crushers and other forms of powered machinery.
Most unusual is the opportunity to tour the lanes around the area in a steam driven bus. A probable highlight will be the steam engine driven threshing machine extracting grain from sheaves of the heritage wheat crop that has been grown on the field and harvested by the cutting and binding methods of a bygone era. Further displays of farming methods from earlier years will be demonstrations of ploughing by both steam engines and vintage tractors. The Mill, of course, will be open providing the opportunity to see milling of grain in action to produce our fine award-winning stoneground flour, which will be available to purchase along with the ever-popular porridge oats. For those enthusiastic to get ahead with their Christmas shopping, the craft tent has extended the number and variety of stalls so there should be plenty of opportunity to buy some unusual and attractive presents. Remember that the press is already suggesting that we could be facing shortages in many supply areas before the festive season! To ensure everyone can enjoy a whole day out at the event there children can enjoy fairground rides and there is full provision of food outlets as well as the bar marquee offering draft ales and ciders.
Advanced tickets for the Working Steam Weekend can be purchased with a 20% discount from our website www.stotfold.com. The weekend is preceded on Friday by Live at the Mill. Starting at 7.00pm this an evening of live music for rock and pop fans in the beer marquee, featuring the popular groups allergy and Delorean. There has been heavy demand for tickets but they might still be available on our website.
Our final children's event for the year is Halloween Spooktacular in the Nature Reserve 3:00 - 5:00. Sunday 31st October. See our website. If you do not manage to join us over the weekend, remember that your last chance to stock up on flour and our winter warming porridge oats will be when we open on Sunday 24th October from 12.30 until 5.00pm. Come along and enjoy a delicious cream tea before we close for the year. We will see you again in the spring! Live @ The Mill Tickets still available

Local News It’s not every day you bump into a film crew on your morning dog walk, but that is exactly what happened to us a couple of weeks ago while walking along the river close to Roecroft School. Charlie Dimmock and her team could be seen filming extracts for BBC show Garden Rescue. We were contacted by local couple Daniel and Saleha who informed us they were indeed the lucky participants for the show and were thrilled to have been selected to take part! Saleha told the Stotfold News, “Our windows have been covered so we have no idea what is going on at the other side but we can hear the work being done! The reveal is tomorrow so we are incredibly excited to see the finished result!’ - Saleha and Daniel have very kindly offered to send us some pictures of the finished garden which we will be able to show you once the programme airs on the BBC next year! How exciting! We cannot wait to see the transformation!

Pre School
We have had a busy few weeks settling our new children into the pre-school, we are pleased to announce they have adjusted to their new routines beautifully. The children’s play so far has been focused on the topic of ‘All About Me’, learning about their body, talking about their homes and families. Our Superstar children are encouraged to take part in daily adult-led activities, usually as part of a small group of children. These activities are carefully planned to provide the children with a fun and stimulating learning experience which will hopefully instil a 'life long' love of learning. Our Superstars also participate in a short 'circle time' which focuses on a letter sound, number, shape and colour of the week. Our younger children (those who remain under 3 years of age for the whole academic year), are known as our Littlestars. These children use our large playroom on the ground floor together with our inviting outdoor area. These areas provide a wide range of engaging resources and play opportunities to enhance your child's development through their play and they are supported and nurtured by our kind and caring staff. As the new term begins we are looking for parents/carers to join our Pre-school Committee. If you can spare a little time each month to attend a meeting and help out with fundraising activities we would love to hear from you, please email pippincommittee@gmail.com for further details.
We continually require items for our gluing table and welcome any old buttons, milk bottle tops, ribbon and old birthday cards. Please drop any items off to the office during term time. We wish to thank everyone who has donated so far. We look forward to sharing more of our news with you again next month. News from Roecroft
Lower School
Hello everybody,
Being back in school and able to function ‘normally’ feels wonderful. Although we are still of course managing the risk of Covid and adjusting to ‘learning to live with it’, we have welcomed back assemblies with the whole school, children enjoying their lunch back in the dining hall together and larger groups of children outside for playtimes. In addition I am hoping that after our first half term we will be able to welcome in parents for assemblies and open classroom sessions, something that has been very missed over the last few years. To our Roecroft children, well done! You have once again settled into school life with ease, showing resilience and trusting in us to keep you safe and ensure you are learning and enjoying school life. This is an update from our Key Stage 1 leader, Miss Emmerson: In Key Stage 1, we have had a fantastic start to our Autumn term after our long summer break. We are all raring to get started in our new year groups and have settled into our new classrooms beautifully. We have enjoyed getting to know our new teachers through fun circle times, we have been sharing special memories from our summer and also taking part in lots of lovely friendship activities. In Year 1, our new topic that we will be focusing on is 'A Toy Story'. We are looking forward to exploring artwork by Andy Warhol and creating our own toy block printing patterns, investigating the materials toys are made from and developing our understanding of maps through Winnie the Pooh's Hundred Acre Wood! In Year 2, our topic is 'Fire and Ice' and we are all keen to develop our understanding of the events of the Great Fire of London through investigative work with artefacts, role play and re-creating the famous diary entry by Samuel Pepys. There is so much to look forward to this term and it has been lovely to be back together as a Roecroft family. Warmest wishes, Mrs Cross

News from St
Mary’s Academy
The children have all settled back into the school routine very well and it’s amazing how quickly the summer holidays are forgotten! We are hoping for continued mild weather so that we can fully enjoy our wonderful outside areas.
By the time this item is published, we will have taken part in our school Harvest Festival Celebration - a special assembly enjoyed by all of our children. Alongside our daily assemblies Jet, Opal, Diamond and Emerald Classes will be leading assemblies during the month. Parents are invited to attend and enjoy these. Please check our weekly Newsletter or website for more information in case of any restrictions. Our individual and family photographs will be taken on Wednesday 5th October – ideal gifts for that ‘season’ that will be upon us all too quickly!
Our 2022 New Parents Information Evening is to be held on Thursday 14th October at 7.00pm. Families of children on our potential admission list are invited to come along for an information evening about starting school in 2022 and what they can look forward to during their time at St Mary’s. Everyone is welcome to attend this very important meeting. Finally, we should mention that we are well into the new learning mission for the Autumn Term, including 'All About Me' in Reception Classes, ‘Nurturing Nurses' in Key Stage 1 and ‘The Vikings' and ‘The Stone Age’ in Key Stage 2 which will include workshops that should prove to be fun and educational.
We are only just back at school from the summer break but October Half Term is from Monday 25th to Friday 29th October with an INSET training day on Monday 1st November.

The start of term is an amazing time to be in school. I have just taken a moment to look back over my thoughts at this time in the previous two years. On both occasions I was talking about the new building and challenges associated with opening a new school. We now start our third year; the school has grown from less that 60 pupils to over 400 and this September we CLAIRE’S welcomed over 180 pupils into Y5. The school is “alive” and full of energy and enthusiasm.

It is also a new year where we are all hoping that the pandemic is starting to recede in terms of its impact. These last two years have been disrupted beyond all imagination and to have navigated this period while staring a new school has on occasion presented some challenges. We have been fortunate at Pix Brook to have had the full support of our community and children who have shown themselves to be resilient and flexible. I must also mention the staff team at the school who have responded to every challenge stoically.
This year is exciting! Already we have put together our extra-curricular programme, the range of sports making use of our superb facilities will really enhance the pupil experience. Staff have also offered their time after school to teach public speaking, drama, German, chess, choir, and a range of other opportunities. Being able to attend these clubs is something that pupils have really missed and it is fantastic that they can now be back on. Perhaps the most gratifying element to working in a school is seeing the relationship between the members of the school develop. We now have our first group of secondary age pupils in school. These young people are already very different from the new Y5’s they were when they joined in 2019. We now have a common experience and their ever-increasing maturity makes for the most interesting and surprising conversations. Young people are full of life and thoughts and as we work together it is amazing to see them grow. This is something I know all of us at PBA are looking forward to seeing.

It’s great to have the children back in school, welcome our new Year 5s into ETA Juniors, Year 7s into the Secondary School, and a number of new students across the upper years. Over the Summer further improvements have been made on the site with refurbished toilets, more water fountains, new changing rooms and painting all around. Supported by our parents and staff, we were delighted to be able to get the majority of our students covid tested in school prior to them starting back on their first day. We are enormously grateful for this support which enabled all our children to go straight to their new Form group, meet their Form Tutor and fellow Tutees, giving them the best, and most normal, start to their school year.
Our Year 7s have made a brilliant start to the Secondary School, many of whom had attended the Summer School during August. During the Summer School they had opportunities to explore the main school and navigate themselves to areas and subjects without the challenge of getting to lessons on time! They cooked, explored sciences, played games and wore constant smiles throughout their week. Many thanks to Mr Baga, Assistant Principal, who gave up his holiday to give them this great start. The Year 5 children are settling in well to ETA Juniors, enjoying the facilities and open spaces. They are particularly enjoying their roast dinners, homemade curries and of course the fish and chip Fridays. Many have been excited to join in conversations with our catering contractor’s in-house Chef to help develop the menu even further. It’s really exciting to also see so many signing up to the residential adventure trip going out this term.
We are looking forward to reporting back next month following the election of our new Student Leadership Team. We always have a fantastic number of students who want to contribute to the success of our school, support our strong values and who really care about Etonbury. Soon we will be welcoming parents considering their child's next move, whether it is to start in Year 5 in September 2022 or looking at their options for moving into our Secondary School starting in Year 7. We will be holding open evenings and providing tours to help them make this important decision, and our experienced Primary, GCSE and A-Level teachers will be available to help them with any questions. Please keep an eye out on social media and local press for more updates.

Family announcements Michael Stone - Thankyou,
Sadly and unexpectedly Michael passed away in July and his funeral was in August. As a family we would like to thank everyone that has sent cards, flowers, gifts and kind messages. Our neighbours have been so understanding and supportive and we are really grateful for the time and space you have given us. We were totally overwhelmed by the number of people that came to the crematorium to pay their last respects to Michael and apologise to those who were unable to be inside. We would especially like to thank Michael's football "lads" and work colleagues who celebrated Michael's love of Gillingham F.C .They wore ties and shirts bought especially for the day. Football was Michaels passion, and his friends and team mates from Stotfold Lions have been great. We would also like to acknowledge that many friends and relatives couldn't be there but watched the video link. Michael was a happy , loving young man and his life was just starting for him. He had just moved into his own home with his partner Lisa and lovely son Benjamin (2years). Michael will be missed by us all, but especially Lisa, Benjamin, his sisters Laura and Helen and of course us, his Mum and Dad. Thankyou all again, Janet and David

Local News Local Author features in Amazon top ten list.
A few months back we featured a story on local Author Steven Smith and his number one bestseller ‘Chasing Shadows. We are delighted this month to feature yet another bestselling local Author Paul Walker. For those of you that enjoy historical fiction then Paul’s books are most certainly worth a look. Stotfold based Paul has now had three books published by Sharpe Books, a publisher that specialises in Crime, Thrillers and Historical Fiction. Set in the late 16th century, the hero of the books is William Constable a young doctorand astrologer, who gets caught up in a series of plots and intrigues against Queen Elizabeth I. He becomes an unwilling spy for Sir Francis Walsingham, the Queen’s spymaster.
Author Paul Walker enjoys Amazon top ten success
Although William is a fictional character, some of the events and characters in the books are real. The first book, State of Treason, was published in June 2019. A Necessary Killing was published in November 2019 and The Queen’s Devil in July 2020. The books have had over 1,500 reviews on Amazon and all have featured in the Amazon top ten for Historical Thrillers, alongside famous authors such as Ken Follet, Robert Harris and Philippa Gregory. Paul is planning to write at least three more books in the series and has just completed a seperate thriller set in Paris at the end of World War 1. Paul has very kindly agreed to give away a signed set of his first three books to one lucky Stotfold Magazine reader. All you have to do is answer one simple question and return your answers to us by email or post using the contact details on page 3. Question: Who was known as the Spymaster for Elizabeth I???

Local News Alex takes on the London Marathon to help cure blood cancer
Local teaching assistant Alex is taking on the 2021 Virgin Money London Marathon as part of a 150 strong team of runners raising vital funds for blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan. Alex who’s parents live on Arlesey Road, decided to take on the London Marathon for Anthony Nolan to support more then just being on the stem cell register. Back in 2018, Alex donated stem cells after being identified as a match, although initially successful, unfortunately only gave the donor receiver an extra 6 months. Being met with a connection to this individual, and feeling like there was more that she could do, Alex is running her first ever marathon in honour of that individual; to provide more awareness, and to raise some funds for Anthony Nolan to continue with the work that they do.
Alex, 27 told the Stotfold Magazine “I am excited to be part of the 2021 London Marathon, to raise money for Anthony Nolan because the power of awareness and the donations received, help to find more matches for people on the waiting list. I feel so privileged to have a place with Anthony Nolan in the marathon, after such a long time where limited opportunities for these vital events to raise funds for such important things has been on hold.” “With this being my first ever Marathon, it feels like such a daunting feat. I only found out I had a place at the end of July 2021, and so training has been hard and Alex ready for the marathon challenge ahead raising sponsorship money has been harder. All my friends and family have been so supportive, and I just can not wait to cross the finish line, with the support behind me and knowing I would have raised funds for such an incredible charity.” Anthony Nolan is the charity that finds matching stem cell donors for people with blood cancer – and gives them a second chance of life. The charity also carries out ground-breaking research to save more lives and provides information and support to patients after a stem cell transplant, through its clinical nurse specialists and psychologists, who help guide patients through their recovery. You can sponsor Alex at https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/AlexGreasby.

QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE – JUNE 2022 Next year will see a celebration of the HM The Queen’s 70 years as reigning monarch. A special celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will be held over a four-day bank holiday weekend from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June. The Town Council is starting discussions on how our town might like to celebrate this milestone. Initial thoughts include taking part in the National Beacon Lighting Ceremony, using our existing Beacon at Stotfold Cemetery, planting trees as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy planting scheme, encouraging residents to take part in the Big Jubilee Lunch, organising an outdoor cinema or similar event on Greenacre Park, erecting bunting and planting floral displays. We will also be inviting members of the public and organisations to advise us of their events, so that we can put together a Jubilee Celebrations Events Programme.
WELCOME BACK FUND – promoting the town’s businesses and new floral displays Central Bedfordshire Council has been allocated funding from the Government’s Welcome Back Fund (and part of a legacy European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) scheme) for the purpose of encouraging shoppers and employees to return in a safe way, but also to ensure that economic activity returns as quickly as possible. The fund is intended for specific activities towards the safe opening of high streets and town centres, with wide ranging criteria for projects such as beautification of a town centre, promotional material, safety measures, etc.
The Town Council’s application for our portion of the funding was successful. With the help of this magazine, all businesses and shops in the town have been invited to contribute to a business directory, free of charge and to be circulated with the Stotfold News magazine. We will also be brightening up our high street by providing floral planters.
DIARY DATE - REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY This year’s Stotfold Remembrance Day Ceremony takes place on Sunday 14th November, at Stotfold Cemetery, Mill Lane. The ceremony will start at 2.45pm and we ask that you convene at the Cemetery by 2.30pm. After the laying of the wreaths the parade will make its way along Queen Street, along the High Street and turn into Church Road to St Mary's Church for the service at 3.30pm. Should the weather be inclement the parade will be shortened, along Queen Street and into Chequers Close. The Royal British Legion, organisations from the town and the Town Council will be taking part, and residents are also invited to join us.
DIARY DATE – CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH ON A date for your diary - this year’s Christmas Lights Switch On will take place on Saturday 27th November 2021 at the Greenacre Centre. Small groups for parents/carers and babies up to 2 years were trialled before the August holiday period and proved beneficial in connecting people and enabling babies to interact after a long period of isolation in their homes. The Home League, a group of women that meets on Tuesday afternoons for Christian worship, education and fellowship, is planning to restart on 12th October at 2.00 pm. We enjoy singing and sharing experiences with one another and there is always laughter. Readers who are interested in attending these meetings may just come along or phone for more information. We will be delighted to welcome new members to this group that has continued to support one another with weekly phone calls since March 2020. Men’s Fellowship has its first outing on 6th September and Ladies’ Fellowship is hoping to resume in January 2022.
We are making plans for CONNECT – youth club for grown ups to restart and will let you know as soon as we have a date for this. At present we are without leadership for our BLAST club (Kids club), Youth Club, Tiddlywinks Group & Little Sparks group. We are hoping to appoint somebody to head up these important and valuable groups very soon, so look out for Job adverts which will be available soon. We are also in need of a cook for our Lunch Club which is held once a month, if you are interested in this please let us know. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13

Scout Group
The past 15 months have posed many challenges for Scouting, and we have been working very hard behind the scenes to make a safe return to face-to-face sessions. We have been extremely short of help to safely run our sessions - with Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts all impacted by a shortage of leaders and/or parent helpers. As a result, there is now a real risk of closure for some of our sections, unless we can find the vital help that’s needed. There are a number of ways you can support your local group, be it as a Sectional Assistant, Assistant Leader, or even Section Leader.
Available roles: Comanche Cubs, Monday - Cub Leader, Assistant Leader, Sectional Assistant Chickasaw Beavers, Wednesday - Sectional Assistant Cherokee Cubs, Thursday - Assistant Leader Ridgeway Scouts, TBA* Scout Leader, Assistant Leader, Sectional Assistant * Ridgeway Scouts currently meet on Wednesdays; however, we’re attempting to restart an additional Scout troop (the Friday night section is currently closed) due to the extensive waiting list. In addition to the roles above, the Scout’s Executive Committee oversees the building and equipment has other available support roles, and we are currently looking for a Group Secretary and a Deputy Group Scout Leader, as well as help with fundraising events.
If you are interested in any of these roles or would like to discuss anything above in more detail, please contact gslstotfold@gmail.com. Volunteering for your local scouting group is incredibly rewarding.
We welcome all volunteers, no experience is necessary just the willingness to learn, enthusisam to help our groups and the ability to play a very hands-on role within our community.

Mental Health Matters with Jo Loach Uncertainty.
There has been much uncertainty surrounding this pandemic and we still know exactly how things will unravel as we move forwards. As humans, we don’t tend to manage uncertainty well. We like to know what is going on, what we can expect moving forwards and to have a sense of control. The pandemic tends to scupper these which may evoke stress, anxiety and low mood. What we can do to proactively look after our mental and emotional health in the face of ongoing uncertainty is to sustain good self care habits.
don’t
We often know what we need but don’t always do it. For example, maintaining good sleep routines, a healthy diet, drinking water, having times of rest as well as engaging in enjoyable/creative/playful pursuits, talking to friends, exercising and spending time in nature. However, no matter how much we attempt to be preventative with our health, sometimes, too much goes on for too long resulting in a diminished ability for daily functioning.
No Fuss, No Mess, No Harsh Chemicals We clean and repair all makes of Ovens, Ranges, Hobs, Microwaves and BBQ·s

If this presents via prolonged or extreme anxiety, depression, sleeping issues, withdrawal from support or activity, emotional outbursts, obsessive thinking or an increase in destructive behaviours, it may be time to seek help. If so, the GP is always the first port of call. Whilst there are national shortages right now, it is important to persevere. If the waiting times for available resources are too long, going private is not the only option. If you are able to do so, you can find suitably verified counsellors at https://www.counselling-directory.org.uk.
If not, a Google search will bring up the details of local counselling agencies. These are challenging times for our mental and emotional health so developing awareness of our response to uncertainty can help us to recognise what is helpful or otherwise and to seek help when needed.

Art Club
Welcome to the latest update from Stotfold Art Group.
These charming pastel sketches are by Art Group member John Nichol. During the first lockdown he encouraged his family (via Zoom) to produce nature pictures and, as a former teacher, he had to lead by example.
He likes to work in pastels, sometimes in watercolour and marquetry is another hobby.John lives in Letchworth GC and is an active group member, helping with the setting up of our regular meetings and annual exhibitions.
Painting by John Nichol
Richard Whitelock was at one time group secretary and organised the social side. His working life gave him a background in architectural planning and drawing, for local government. On retirement, this was put to good use at Stotfold Mill, where many of the models are Richard's work. In the art group he developed a distinctive style with line drawings and watercolour washes. The iconic beach huts of the British coast became his trademark and he has sold many paintings of this at the Stotfold Mill.. If you are interested in joining our friendly group, we meet each Thursday at the Roecroft Centre - 1.45 to 3.45pm. For details contact 07734 304593

Judo Club
JUDO – The Gentle Way
“Walk a single path, becoming neither cocky with victory nor broken with defeat, without forgetting caution when all is quiet or becoming frightened when danger threatens. Apply just the right amount of force — never too much, never too little..” Kanō Jigorō
What an interesting 18 months, ups and downs. When we first went into lockdown Stotfold judo went online! Not ideal but at least we could meet online and practice techniques. We also had HIIT sessions on Sunday mornings! The sensai’s worked us hard, but kept us fit! As soon as we could, and adhering to government guidelines, we returned to the dojo. Family members were allowed to train together those without siblings or parents went through techniques on their own. Not ideal but at least we were all in the same room. To allow for maximum numbers to attend we had a number of sessions, sanitising the mats between and at the end. Well done to the committee for getting Stotfold Judo through the pandemic. Now we are back to full contact training and Anxiety, Weight Release, everyone is loving it and can’t wait for competitions to start . Depression, Fears & Phobias, Stotfold Judo Club train on Wednesdays, at The Pendleton Centre, Stotfold. SG15 6XS Session times: 5:30-7:00pm 5 to 15 years 7:00-8:30pm Seniors 16 +
