Is there any kind o f cake or biscuit that you really don’t like and what is your all time favourite? I really don’t like Battenberg cake at all Ano ther pet hate is cake f illed with lo ts o f English/American bu ttercream way too sweet! I lo ve a really good lemon drizzle cake By really good, I mean it has to be ver y ‘drizzly’! No thing beats it in my book
If you are currently watching the new series o f the Great British Bake Off then you will most cer tainly recognise Sto tfold baker Dawn as one o f the 2022 contestants! In between her baking (you can follo w her @ thebakerdawn on instagram) and dealing with her new found fame, we managed to ask Dawn a few questions abou t the programme and o f course, her lo ve for a really good lemon drizzle cake!

Did you ever dream that you would actually get into the Bake Off tent, and what was your reaction when you go t the call conf irming your place? I dreamt abou t it bu t did I really? No, no t in a million years! I just remember saying “Oh My Word!” Or possibly something less polite! I had goosebumps and was shaking like a leaf!
Can you describe your emo tions when you walked into the tent on the f irst day, was it what you expected it to be? Delight, excitement, ner ves and ‘f ight or flight’ was def initely kicking in The tent seemed smaller than I imagined it I just kept thinking, “I’m Alice and I’ve fallen do wn a rabbit hole any minu te no w the Mad Hatter is going to turn up”!
What’s the one kitchen u tensil that you can’t really be withou t? That’s a new thing.. a Mexican elbo w, something I disco vered in my Bake Off u tensil drawer!
If you had to make a cake o f yourself in your proudest moment what would it be and why, and what kind o f cake would it be? Ooh this is a tough one. My family f ill me with pride all the time. If I need to talk abou t me personally then it has to be getting picked for Bake Off. I just couldn’t believe that someone thought I was good enough to take par t. The cake would be a rainbo w layered Genoise sponge cake, co vered in sugar flo wers with tiny models o f all my fello w bakers peeking ou t f rom between the petals

As a baker what would you say are your strengths….and what are your weaknesses? My strengths are staying pretty calm under pressure (on the sur face anyway), I have a lo t o f kno wledge stashed away in that head o f mine. Weaknesses, I’ve been inclined to play it safe with flavours sometimes.

It is tiny and black, only abou t one f ifth o f an inch long It is sometimes called a nunus and there are around 97,000 varieties Yes, it does have a snou t and it lays around 200 eggs ln its lifetime and it has caused us a lo t o f problems at the mill It is, o f course, the granar y weevil The weevil lays its eggs in the wheat grains as they ripen and they remain there even after the grain has been milled, only usually hatching as lar vae at a later date if your flour has been stored in the cupboard for a long time, irrespective o f its make or variety Unfor tunately, the recent prolonged period o f ho t weather induced the weevils in the grain stored in the mill to hatch and consequently to spoil what remained o f this year ’s grain stock. For tunately, the presence o f the weevils was spo tted by the miller, Ray Kilby, before the grain was milled to give contaminated flour.
The consequence has been that Ray and a team o f volunteers have had to remo ve and destro y all the grain in the mill and thoroughly clean the storage bins and machiner y throughou t before calling in a company to fumigate the whole building. We are extremely grateful to all the volunteers who came for ward at shor t no tice to assist with this task. We are pleased to announce that we have been able to purchase in a supply o f clean wheat that will enable us to continue to sho w the mill in action, producing flour, during the for thcoming Working Steam Weekend. At this time, we are uncer tain whether we will be able to obtain a supply o f oats. Our apologies if we are unable to satisfy the demands o f the porridge lo ving customers.
Plans are already in hand for or next major event in May 2023, bu t if it is to match the success o f this year ’s Steam Fayre and Countr y Sho w, we desperately need more volunteers to come for ward to assist with ideas for sho w attractions and the marketing and publicity for the event If you are willing to join the planning team, please drop a no te in at the mill or go to www sto tfoldmill com/volunteer

September is always something o f a blur in schools Suddenly the summer becomes a distant memor y For our new pupils (and parents) it is abou t becoming used to the new rou tines This can be a challenge and we tr y to remember that any change can be discombobulating, ho wever experience tells us that ver y quickly what was new becomes familiar and in time comfor table

The historical changes that have occurred during the Queens reign are huge and for young people the simple fact that these changes happened in one person’s life are extraordinar y ( They are to me!) There is also the impor tant discussions abou t the passing o f a person who we all feel we kno w It was a really impor tant moment for so many reasons
Our revised opening hours: Tues: 2pm 7pm Wed: 10am 7pm Thursday: 3pm 7pm Friday: 10am 1pm Saturday: 10am 2pm
September was a signif icant month for so many reasons Most pro foundly the passing o f our Queen during the f irst week o f term created a great deal o f sadness in the countr y Withou t doubt our pupils, many o f whom had just joined the school were affected by this It was, on reflection unsurprising that this should be the case given the media co verage and perhaps more impor tantly the fact that the Queen has been a constant in all our lives for so long As a school we took the oppor tunity to sensitively and appropriately use this as a learning experience
Conditions treated include spinal and extremity injuries, neck related headaches and sprains/strains We are NOW OPEN
For a school it is also impor tant that life continues as usual. Our school has gro wn o ver the last three years f rom ver y small beginnings to one with approaching 600 pupils. We are ver y conscious o f our responsibilities to our pupils and this community and are already preparing for the schools upcoming events. It is wor th remembering that so many events and oppor tunities have been cur tailed o ver the last few years due to COVID. It no w feels as if we are f inally coming to the end o f this traumatic period in histor y and we are able to plan things “normally”. Spor ting f ixtures have star ted, the choir is being formed, trips are booked, normal parents evenings can begin and our open evening on Thursday 3rd No vember is being prepared We look for ward to welcoming visitors to our school in so many ways
As a school and nation we are going through this process and we simply need a little patience and forbearance while we all get used to these new things

I wonder what else we may have lost in this exchange. For all our concerns abou t nature and the environment, we are no longer a people o f the land, or people o f the soil. We still work with our hands, bu t most o f us use tools such as keyboard and mouse, and no t plough or sickle. Most o f us won’t celebrate these things, and even fewer o f us will go on a pilgrimage, setting ou t in the conf ident hope o f encountering God in the world and in its inhabitants.
“Come to me, all you who are wear y and burdened, and I will give you rest Take my yoke on you and learn f rom me, because I am gentle and humble in hear t, and you will f ind rest for your souls For my yoke is easy to bear, and my load is no t hard to carr y ” (Matthew 11:28 30)
The Bible sho ws us a po wer ful image o f God as the creator and sustainer o f the whole universe. The gospels reveal Jesus walking abou t the to wns and villages o f a predominantly rural and agrarian people. We see him by the f ields, vineyards and olive gro ves. We see him by the lake, in the wilderness, up a hill, and on the road Jesus could look at all sor t o f natural elements and agricultural processes and f ind a way to point to God and his kingdom Agricultural metaphors such as so wing and reaping abound, bu t most o f us might struggle to understand them today Bu t I hope we can all understand what Jesus said in this well kno wn passage f rom the Gospel o f Matthew:

In the Bible we read abou t the feast o f Tabernacles, or the Au tumn festival This was held annually each year abou t the time o f September and October It was a big deal, and all the men were required to attend and take par t In our busy urban lives today, our typically lacklustre attempts to ackno wledge Har vest come no where near the impor tance or signif icance o f the ancient agricultural festivals.

Such a lo t o f mixed emo tions as I write this, the day that Charles III was proclaimed King and only two days since we heard the news that Queen Elizabeth II had died By the time that you read this, a whole set o f o ther national events combining bo th mourning and celebration will already be a memor y It will have been an unsettling few weeks for many And, o f course, we were already unsettled by war, climate injustice, and cost o f living
