From the Editor
From the Editor Welcome to September,
However you chose to spend your summer, we hope that you have enjoyed the glorious weather and the break from routine, for those of us enjoying the school holidays. As always, this month we have some really interesting articles, including an update from The Larksfield PPG with regards to the changes currently taking place at our local doctors surgery. The PPG aim to ‘bridge the gap’ between the doctors surgery and it’s patients. They plan to supply us more detail on all the changes in the forthcoming issues of the Stotfold News Magazine and through our social media so keep checking in on our facebook page for future developments. We have a smattering of local news to bring you this month, with a special focus on two of our local sporting groups - both of which have most certainly put Stotfold on the map these last few weeks. Congratulations to Stotfold Bowls Club and to the Stotfold Twirlers on your recent successes. You’ll notice on page 6 that the date for this year’s Working Steam Weekend and Agricultural Show has been announced - make sure you place Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th October firmly in your diary. Tickets are available from the Stotfold Mill website. Lastly, Thanks to reader Paul Edwards for allowing us to use one of his beautiful photos as our front cover for September. Until next month.. Joanne

Local News Brown Owl bows out after 20 years of volunteering.
Retirement is a strange place to be, for I have loved every minute of providing a safe space for girls to grow and learn, make lifelong friends and create everlasting memories. When I moved to Stotfold in 2001, being new to the area I didn’t know anyone, and I commuted to my job in South Hertfordshire. I wanted to do something that would give back a little to the community I was now living in, and I wanted to get to know local people. Having been a Brownie, Guide and Venture Scout myself and the fact that my parents met when they were both Scout Leaders, Guiding was already in my blood. In 2002, I approached the District Commissioner and I volunteered to join any group that was in need of Leaders. I was placed with 4th Stotfold Brownies - There I stayed for the next 20 years.
Over the past 20 years I have seen hundreds of girls from Stotfold and the surrounding area start as a Rainbow, move on to being a Brownie and then becoming a Guide. Some of these girls have then become Young Leaders and even Adult Leaders. It has been a real pleasure to run weekly meetings, organise outings and Brownie camps. Weekly meetings are full of fun with arts and crafts, games and badgework. Many a fun time has been had staying on the rollercoaster and going around 5 times in a row, each time with a different Brownie, so they could each experience the thrill of the ride. The annual trip to the pantomime always brought much joy. Going on Camp is a real highlight for the Brownies and Leaders alike. Girls get to share dormitories with their friends and learn how to prepare and clear up after meals. Providing opportunities like this is very valuable to the girls, it gives them space to be Dawn Peters with daughter Lauren themselves and to find out what they like to do. The pandemic hit hard and we had to stop what we love doing. Meetings became different and we met on Zoom. Keeping the momentum and enthusiasm going and keeping peoples spirits high was difficult. Meetings are now back to as they were pre-pandemic and we have regrown our units to full strength. For me, this is a good time to step down knowing that I leave Girlguiding, Stotfold, in a strong position with full units and healthy waiting lists. I would like to reach out to you though, the adults, and potential volunteers. Organisations like Girlguiding and Scouts cannot run without the volunteers,. From the start I have tried to “be the adult you needed as a child”. If I have done this for just one girl during my 20 years of Guiding, then mission accomplished!! I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers, many of whom have volunteered for much longer than I have. families. I am grateful that we live in such a wonderful community and that I have made a lot of friends along the way. Dawn Peters, Brown Owl

Bishop, MP, to join public in chalk river pilgrimage to protect River Ivel
The public is invited to join a chalk river pilgrimage starting at Ivel Springs Local Nature Reserve in Baldock, along the River Ivel, and ending at All Saints Church in Radwell, on Sunday 11 September. The walk is being organised by All Saints Church, Radwell and the RevIvel Association, which was formed in 2019 to protect the Ivel’s future. The river runs through Baldock, Radwell, Stotfold, Arlesey and Henlow and is one of just 250 chalk streams in the world. “We all have a responsibility to be good stewards to care for and help protect our local environment,” said Revd Bill Britt, the Vicar of Radwell, Stotfold and Fairfield.
If they wish, those taking part in the walk can join in prayers at various points on the route, led by the Bishop of Bedford, the Rt Revd Richard Atkinson. After the walk, everyone is invited to a The extremely dry river bed. short church service at Radwell’s fourteenth century church, to pray for the stewardship of the River Ivel and that a healthy flow be restored so that it can provide a unique habitat in which special plants, Established 2010 invertebrates, fish, birds, and mammals can thrive. North East Herts MP Sir Fully insured & DBS checked Oliver Heald, who helped set up an All-Party Parliamentary Group on Chalk Loving care guaranteed! Streams, will be joining the walk. Historically, the Ivel was deep enough to be filled with fish while supporting four watermills, breweries and a watercress industry, but it is now a trickle. RevIvel believes that the upper reaches of the River Ivel are drying up because Affinity Water is taking too much water from the source of the river or from the aquifer.
Call Liz: 07894 561765 www.smileypets.co.uk
The two-mile walk will begin at Ivel Springs Local Nature Reserve, north of Baldock at 2.00pm, followed by a short service at All Saint Church, Radwell at 3.30pm. We will leave at 2.00pm from the parking lot on Norton Road for the The Arena postcode - SG7 5AU (please check the route before arriving) There will be refreshments in Radwell, where there are toilets at the campground.
RevIvel has worked with North East Herts MP Sir Oliver Heald, and are currently seeking investment to develop a range of alternative water sources, or significantly reduce water wastage.

Twirling success for local athletes.
Stotfold Twirlers and their 2 Bellettes members have had a fantastic year competing at both local, National and International level!
They started the year with regional and area competitions with most of their members taking part and winning many top three placings. In March, the group attended England Selections where Mila, Grace, Eleanor and Rheanna gained placings for the England squad for Eurocup Spain in July. Stotfold twirlers had six Stotfold members and our Bellettes take part in BBTSA Nationals at Crawley in April, Lottie, Grace and Rheanna all came back as National Champions, with again many top seven placings for everyone.
Training didn’t stop for the twirlers as they then took part in the British Open competition in June, with Mila winning British Open champion in pairs and Grace winning 2nd place in Pair, their team also picked up 2nd place. The girls entering Solo and Freestyle also gained many top 7 placings.
The four girls attending Eurocup in Spain had a fantastic time representing England, Grace won a silver Medal in the Junior Level A 2 Baton category, a fantastic achievement for her. Mila and Grace were in the Bellettes team placing 7th, Rheanna placed 6th and Eleanor placed 9th both in the Youth level B 2 Baton.
Pictured left to right, Mila, Rheanna, Grace and Eleanor.
To end the competition season Grace is off to WBTF Worlds in Italy to compete in Pair with her Bellettes teammate Eliza. If anyone is interested in joining the Twirlers, please contact Sonia Crook at Sonia.crook@hotmail.com

News from
Etonbury Academy
What an incredible time to be part of Etonbury Academy. We have achieved THREE NATIONAL AWARDS!
We are thrilled to announce that we were awarded SPORTS MARK GOLD. Our Interform netball and football Euros competitions are excellent examples of how the students and staff go over and above to ensure inclusivity, fun and strengthen our community together in PE from the pitches to the sidelines. We were also recognised for our Sports Leadership Programme which involves our Secondary students taking leadership roles in sports events, and again we had a number involved in our Lower School Sports Festival, encouraging and supporting young children to get involved and help develop their confidence. Our outstanding extra-curricular opportunities were recognised for having a team of staff providing over 20 sports during lunchtimes and afterschool. We are really lucky to have Primary and Secondary specialists, but also our wider staff team who have opened up more opportunities to learn something new including boxing, handball, golf and horse riding. Our amazing Student Leaders have also been awarded UK STUDENT VOICE RUNNER UP. We have an incredible 56 students involved in Student Voice at Etonbury leading and supporting decision-making for the school. Aleesha also received a Highly Commended Award for her leadership in developing the ETA community spirit through interform competitions and student research.
Our third award, ECO-SCHOOLS GREEN FLAG WITH DISTINCTION. Following their review we are so proud to have received the most fantastic feedback. ‘This has been an excellent application to review. It's been incredibly heartening and inspiring to see how fully your pupils have engaged with the programme and the work that they've done has simply been astonishing - so creative, wide-spread and embedded in curriculum studies. You are well deserving of the Eco-Schools Green Flag with Distinction Award! Here we go into the new term… We have so much to look forward to including the opening of our Sixth Form in September 2023. We welcome Mrs Chloe Dowden as Head of Sixth Form who will be planning this excellent and much needed development for our area. We have already shown many lower school parents and children around our school, but we are looking forward to showing many more of you at our Open Evening to be held on Thursday 13th October who are considering their next steps to a Secondary School (Years 7,8 and 9) or into Year 5 in September 2023. Poppies & Poppyfields Nursery Welcome back!
A huge welcome to our returning families and our new starters. Our priority is to ensure every child settles well after the holidays, and also to support our new children in developing positive relationships with staff as a happy child is ready and enthusiastic to learn! We have a lovely half term planned, with settling-in activities, talking about holidays, beach visits, travelling and transport. We are also looking at seasonal changes as our nature areas start their preparations for the Autumn months. Children enjoy nature treasure hunts, gathering items of similar colours to create collages, enjoying the changes in colours, textures and the smells as summer comes to an end. We are also starting to think about hibernation, in preparation for our next topic.

News from Pippin
Pre School
We re-open our doors for the new term on Monday 5th September.
We look forward to seeing the children who will be returning to us after the summer break and hearing about their summer antics, together with welcoming lots of new children who will be starting their Pippin journey, we look forward to getting to know them and their families. As the children begin to settle into their new routines their play will be focused on the topic of ‘All About Me’, learning about their body and talking about their homes and families. Superstar children are encouraged to take part in daily adult-led activities, usually as part of a small group of children. FREE delivery These activities are carefully planned to provide the children with a fun and stimulating learning experience which will hopefully instil a 'life long' love of learning. Our Superstars also participate in a short 'circle time' which focuses on a letter sound, number, shape and colour of the week. Our younger children (those who remain under 3 years of age for the whole academic year), are known as our Littlestars. These children use our large playroom on the ground floor together with our inviting outdoor area. These areas provide a wide range of engaging resources and play opportunities to enhance your child's development through their play and they are supported and nurtured by our kind and caring staff. As the new term begins we are looking for parents/carers to join our Pre-school Committee. If you can spare a little time each month to attend a meeting and help out with fundraising activities we would love to hear from you, please email pippincommittee@gmail.com

Stotfold Art Club News Welcome to our latest news from Stotfold Art Club: This month we have a masterclass in painting faces and clothing. Some time ago Geoff Hoile took a photo at a National Trust property of a Civil War re-enactor playing a lute. When he used this as the basis for an oil painting, he captured the man's expression and the soft light on the folds of his clothes and cap.
In contrast. the face of the geisha in Barbara Hook's watercolour painting is is very plain, almost a mask. The emphasis is on the colourful and intricate dress and hair. The background is very subtle to bring this into focus. Both stunning pieces of work and indicative of the diversity of the work that some of our members produce. If you enjoy painting or simply enjoy art in any form then we are a local friendly club always welcoming of new members. Watermill
Once again, we are proud to report that the Stotfold Nature Reserve has been awarded a Green Flag. The Green Flag Award is the benchmark international standard for publicly accessible parks and green spaces in the United Kingdom. This award is an enormous tribute to the work of the volunteer members of the local conservation group, TEASEL, who manage the site on behalf of the Stotfold Mill Preservation Trust. The award has been gained every year since 2012 and the mill trustees offer their sincere congratulations and gratitude to the members of TEASEL. If you are not one of the countless members of the public who visit the reserve, which is open every day throughout the year, CLAIRE’S you can find out more about it by visiting the Green Flag website (www.greenflaward.org/park-summary/?park=1319). CAT SITTING Stotfold based Unfortunately, there seems to be some younger members of the community who not only cat sitting service see no value in the nature reserve. Sadly, we have to report that fences have been Now in our 10th year! damaged and graffiti daubed over the bird recognition charts in the hide. We were delighted to receive a communication from an Australian citizen, Allan Waldock who will be visiting this country in September and is hoping to visit Stotfold Mill whilst he is here. Allan’s great, great, great grandfather was David Waldock, who owned the Mill between 1841 and 1863. David was the son of George Waldock who bought the Mill in Please call Claire 1841. Together with his brother, Henry, David became joint owner of the Mill on the death of his father in 1854. We look forward to welcoming Allan to the Mill and perhaps learning 07984 344 997 more of the Waldock family story. September raises thoughts of the Working Steam Weekend, this year taking on 8th & 9th October. Once again, the field opposite the Mill will be filled with steam-driven machines brought from across the country. Other features include a collection of trade and craft stalls, as well as a real ale bar and food outlets. The Mill will be open both days, subject to water availability in the river. Tickets now available on our website (www.stotfoldmill.com) for £8 and £4.

News from St
Mary’s Church
You may have heard of church “seasons” such as Advent and Lent. This year St Mary’s will be celebrating a less wellknown season – the Season of Creation. It begins on 1 September and ends on 4 October. For five weeks we will be exploring the urgent ecological challenges facing our generation, praying about it and considering what environmental actions we can take. Caring for the environment will be the theme of our Sunday and Wednesday services and four Wednesday evening discussion groups during September based on Ruth Valerio’s book, “Saying Yes to Life”, which challenges us to look at how our choices as consumers impact the environment and the lives of people in developing countries.
St Mary’s will also be supporting our sister church, All Saints, Radwell which is organising a two-mile chalk river pilgrimage from Ivel Springs in Baldock to Radwell on Sunday 11 September. The day before, from 2.00pm-5.00pm on Saturday 10 September, everyone is invited to St Mary’s Church for Cream Teas, Cookies and Savouries. Your Parish Church is open every day from 9.00am-4.30pm for anyone who wants a time of quiet personal prayer or refection or to light a candle. There is also a Prayer Box in which you can place a prayer. The vicar will later pray your prayer at our daily services.
Conditions treated include spinal and extremity injuries, neck related headaches and sprains/strains.

A quick browse through history, or even a glance through the Bible, will reveal that there have been many different attempts to establish a calendar. Sometimes these attempts were linked with what we might call science, such as astronomy and agriculture. Some were linked with government, bureaucracy, and communication. Others had more to do with with astrology, divination, or determining favourable dates for sowing or harvest, going on journeys, or starting a war. Apparently the ancient Greeks began their year in the autumn, on what we would call 1 September. Following the French revolution in 1789, attempts to introduce a new decimal calendar failed after only a few years. Here in the UK our own calendar used to mark the start of the year on 25 March, until that was changed for 1752. Thus 1751 was 84 days short, and in 1752 a further eleven days were removed from September, so that Wednesday 2 September was followed by Thursday 14 September. I always tend to think of the new year beginning in September. Maybe this is because of schools and colleges, and always “going up a year” in September. Maybe the long summer holiday also helped influence this view. My brain finds it easier to think of three ‘terms’ separated by holidays. Even today I prefer to use an academic diary, from August to July, rather than following the calendar year from January to December. I see September as a month of new beginnings, fresh starts, new opportunities, and even going up a level.
Writer Edward Grinnen would remind us, “Tomorrow is always uncertain. The future is not ours to know.” He is of course correct, but what will help us to face that uncertainty without anxiety? But Corrie ten Boom, the Dutch woman who survived concentration camp during World War II, would tell us “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.”
07575 353355
Jesus said, “do not be anxious about tomorrow.” What’s more, he told us what we are to do instead of worrying: we are to “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.” When we do that, we draw closer to God, and we can become more aware of God’s constant presence, his steadfast love and his unfailing grace. God’s comforting presence and the life-changing power are available to us all, no matter the date or time.

“Sweet Caroline, Good times never seemed so good, I've been inclined, To believe they never would But now I...” (Neil Diamond)
We’ve been inclined, understandably, to resign ourselves to the “fact” that England would never again win a football championship. Many were too nervous to watch the Wembley final on the last day of July 2022. I struggled, but, it was so worth it. Commentators said that the team succeeded because they kept on working together, kept on believing, to work and work for what they knew was possible. This way of thinking shows the power of having faith in your team mates. Jesus Christ taught his disciples about having faith “as small as a mustard seed’, and that faith can “move mountains”. In church we have to keep reminding ourselves to have faith in Jesus and in each other. Other volunteer organisations similarly have to hang on to the belief that what they are doing is going to help, and that they will be able to achieve their objectives together. In Church, we believe that God’s times are coming and are already here through acts of kindness, justice, inclusivity and welcome, but when things go wrong, or all our daily news is unresolved crisis after unresolved crisis, we can, like Neil Diamond, be “inclined to believe they never would”. So, when that long awaited victory came on 31-7-22, in a way that many did not foresee, through the magnificent women of English football, it gave us a better outlook for the future for other acts of belief and commitment and teamwork. Whether you are in church or another group that is trying to do something good in these challenging days, keep the faith and let those memories of July 31st 2022 inspire you!

Gratitude..
When I asked a lovely neighbour for suggestions for this article, she instantly offered … ‘how about gratitude practice?’. And so the seed was sown.
Gratitude practice is simply the art of making time to pause, look and acknowledge all that you are grateful for in life. Life will always bring good and bad, sorrow and joy, sunshine and rain. The ongoing challenge to us all is to cultivate the ability to still see all the beauty, wonder and kindness that exists in each other and the world, despite all the pain and suffering. When life is going well, it is easier to recognise what we are grateful for. It poses way more of a challenge when we are navigating hard times. And yet, each new day offers its own unique moments of magic for those committed and willing to continue to seek them. If you have never tried gratitude practice, it can be as simple as setting aside five minutes within your day, to reflect upon those moments for which you feel grateful. It’s not all about the big stuff and it certainly doesn’t have to be costly, just those moments where you felt a flicker of aliveness, joy or connection to yourself, another or the world around.
