FINAL CHAPTER 2
COMMODORE’S LOG
I
hope this final chapter of my Commodore’s Log finds you safe and healthy. I want to start by letting you know what an honor it has been to serve as your Commodore. I could have done without the Coronavirus pandemic, but we still achieved quite a bit.
I would like to congratulate the Sailing Center team for another very successful Summer Camp. We had 576 kids this year. In a year that I thought we were going to have to cancel Summer Camp, the Sailing Center team defined the policies and procedures that resulted in a safe and successful Camp.
As I reflect back on what was a very challenging year, we also had some significant accomplishments. Winning the referendum that allows the City of St. Petersburg to give us a 20 year lease for the Sailing Center is a big deal for the Club. And we did it with 84% of the vote. I would like to again thank everyone who played a part in this initiative. I am also pleased to report that the first draft of the 20 year lease is complete.
This year’s Election and Annual meeting are on Tuesday, October 13th. Please remember this year there are two additional ways you can vote. Up to two weeks prior to the election you will be able to stop by the Club and cast your ballet. You can also vote without even going to the Club. You can request a mail in ballet and simply vote by mail. Please vote.
As the Coronavirus hit we increased the frequency of Flag officers meetings and instead of the Board of Directors meeting once a month we met twice each month. We did this so that we could convert the daily changing federal, state and local regulations into policies and practices that would provide a safe and enjoyable environment for our members. We also went into project mode. We figured this would be a good time to knock out some larger projects. At Pass-a-Grille the docks have been rebuilt and the bathrooms have received a significant upgrade. Downtown, there is a project underway to develop a conceptual design for replacing the main docks. A time frame for replacement has not yet been determined. We also found time to deploy a Prospective Member Tracking CRM system.
Lastly, I would like to thank my fellow Flag officers and every Director on the Board for your support this year. In an unprecedented year, with many challenges, I am proud of the job we did. See you around the Club.
Commodore Michael Blacker
The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige.

he SPYC Riders were laid back last month; too hot and humid for any serious riding. Two of us took a ride north into the gentle hills of Hernando and Pasco Counties, ending in a socially distant lunch at Hungry Harry’s BBQ in Land O Lakes. Another fearless soul tackled some tight curves on his BMW 1200RT at the Tail of The Dragon in the mountains near Andrews, NC. he last week of August came to Co-Captain Els Wiemken an end with the Powerboat Safety Course, part I. The class learned a lot from un-docking, docking the boats, pivoting around in a triangle, and steering through a slalom course. September 2nd was Part II of the course, the weather was beautiful with calm seas. The class did some exercises on the bay: planing the boats, running them through a slalom course at speed, and running stationary at a mark followed by a pivot, bow to stern. Participating were: Kathy Ahern, Gina Bowden-Pierce, Barbara Goodman, Carol Hansen, Gwen Mann, Martha Monfried, Donna Papa, Jennifer Parramore, Katie Rodgers, Micki Siviter,
Linda Summers, and Els Weimken. Afterwards, we enjoyed a SPYC takeout lunch in the park. Sailing will resume in September with the Edie Pace Race competed in Optis. This traditional Salty regatta honors Edie’s birthday and we will celebrate with champagne following the race. We look forward to our Annual Meeting on October 7th. Some Salties will be meeting in “person” and others will be using the Zoom platform. SMOOTH SAILING | OCTOBER 2020

by Dr. Patsy Warmack, President We are very fortunate to have Susan B. Anthony, portrayed by Margaret Kaler famed Florida storyteller from St. Augustine, scheduled for our October 19th program meeting. What better way to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage then with Susan B. in the clubhouse?! This will be an exclusive for LBC members because, due to the coronavirus, no guests will be allowed – although it isn’t too late to join the LBC (see details below). We are really excited because members can attend virtually or face-to-face. Anyone who wants to attend (at the club or via Zoom) MUST MAKE A RESERVATION! If anyone needs more information regarding reservations, e-mail me at patsywarmack@tampabay.rr.com or call, you’ve got my number.
This should be a fabulous event whether you attend in person at the PAG Clubhouse or on Zoom. Members who reserve a Zoom seat will be sent a link to click to enter the meeting. “Zoomee’s” will even have a chance to win that bottle of wine if they wear their LBC name tag! If attending this program at the clubhouse you may choose to stay for lunch or not. Remember though, you must make a reservation for Zooming in, attending at the clubhouse for program only, or for the program and lunch. If you haven’t paid your dues yet, now is the time. Contact Maryette Miller (maryette06@tampabay.rr.com) Treasurer to mail your check or Cheryl Lanfear (mclanfear@yahoo.com) Membership Chair, if you will be a new number - she will send you a copy of the member enrollment form. ingle Barrel’s shotgun had only one barrel. Everybody else had two. Everybody else also had considerable shooting experience. Single barrel had none. He joined the Wing Shooters in 2015 because his friend, known as Money Man, convinced him it was a good group. Shooting experience really didn’t matter, the Wing Shooters needed members. In two years time thousands of trigger pulls and lots of advice from all his new friends yielded good shooting skills. He even bought a double barrel, now that is progress. He also became a vital cog in the Wing Shooters. In fact, in 2017 he became the 2nd Grand Marshall. He had an education background which meant classroom management skills. He quickly found those skills were useless. The traditions established under Pull, the
1st Grand Marshall, would not be displaced. There were no rules and certainly no tolerance for a syllabus. He learned quickly and the Wing Shooters prospered under his able leadership. After a year as the Grand Marshall he passed the symbol of authority, an old and heavy hand clay thrower, to Gene Collins. And that friendship with Money Man, also known as Jack Cartier, is better than ever. That’s the way it is in the Wing Shooters. Just ask Tom Hatton, also known as Single Barrel. Those wishing to join the Wing Shooters Society are encouraged to contact Grand Marshall, Gene Collins at (727) 385-4878, or genebcollins@hotmail.com.
At the Downtown Clubhouse or SPYC @ PAG.

et’s give a big “Thank You” and “Shout Out” to our fearless leaders of our Golf Group, Susan and John Arsenault, for their efforts in keeping our spirits high during these past months!
The end of September outing was scheduled at the Vinoy Golf Club and our results will have to be announced next month. Our October outing will be at St. Peterburg Country Club, a venue that was set for our Member/Guest tournament in May but had to be cancelled because of COVID precautions. The November outing is still in the planning stage but will prove to be a “not to be missed” event. Traditionally we take a day trip to Innisbrook Golf Resort in December and enjoy a challenging and enjoyable day on one of the beautiful courses. We have booked the evening of December
Let us welcome a group of new members to our group and look forward to having them on our scramble teams: Charles Bruner, Mary Deininger, Mark Foster, Patty and Dave Gabri, Sandio Gracio, Melvyn Weinstock, Brad Bell, Scott Boyle. A reminder that dues for this year are $35 and will be automatically charged to a golf member’s club account. We use this fee to assist with expenses for our Holiday party and for lunches for the players at most outings. All SPYC members are invited to play with us one time to try us out and then join our group by contacting Susan at sueatcp@aol.com. Our next meeting to be on Tuesday, October 3rd at 6:00 pm.

or almost 50 years, the Broad Reachers of Pass-a-Grille have been reaching, running, beating, tacking, gybing, and enjoying the best of sailing and camaraderie with a wonderful group of women. We are 46 members strong, with 32 active sailors, some who have been sailing for decades; others who are just beginning. We gather Saturday mornings at the Clubhouse at Pass-a-Grille to sail in Optimist Prams, and throughout the year we compete in interclub regattas hosted by other member clubs of the Florida Women’s Sailing Association. We host our signature Commodore Lucas Cup Regatta every fall, with competitors from women’s sailing clubs up and down Florida’s west coast.
Nancy Lucas Race
We are pleased to welcome our two newest members, who joined this summer: Juliette Clark and Lori Hodges. Some of our upcoming events are: Halloween Race, Commodore Lucas Regatta, Nona Bolster Race, Nancy Lucas Race, and Captain’s Race. Join us Saturday mornings to sail, help with safety and mark boats, or assist on the docks as a Race Committee member --- or just come for lunch or a dip in the pool after sailing.
