COMMODORE’S LOG D

ear SPYC Members, Welcome to February! I hope everyone is enjoying the Club and the attractions at all five of our locations! January was certainly a great month for activity and events at the Club. The SPYC Snell Isle Marina is busy pumping fuel, boat lifts are active, and the ships store is selling bait, beer, wine and more. Gas at Snell isle is available for members (and nonmembers) and the Downtown Marina sells gas and diesel (available for members only). The Pass-a-Grille Clubhouse is busy in the lounge, dining room, and outdoor areas, and on weekends we have a dedicated Dock Master helping members dock their boats. If you have a smaller boat, we ask you to dock on one of the inside slips, and reserve the east side (outside) of the T-dock for larger boats that need larger space. If you have not been to the Pass-a-Grille Clubhouse, be sure to visit and introduce yourself to Kerrie Paquette, our Beach Club Manager. She and her staff will make you feel right at home! The Downtown Clubhouse is also seeing increased activities. The weather has made this a perfect time to enjoy and meet new friends at the Tiki and Heritage Lounge patio dining. If you are considering hosting a party or wedding at the Club, I urge you to make reservations with Shannon in our Catering Department as soon as possible.

Membership is growing! During the month of January, we had a large new member month with over 40 new members joining our Yacht Club family, and we’re on our way to great February. I would like to welcome and invite all new members to get involved with all SPYC has to offer. Regarding Club happenings, be sure to review details in our monthly Smooth Sailing magazine. I’m amazed when I flip through the pages to see everything there is to do at our Club. Entertainment Chair, Jeannie O’Grady and her committee, have really stepped up the fabulous events planned for this year. Details are included in her ‘Entertainment Update’ - make plans to attend, you won't be dissappointed! Sunday, February 6th is the 18th Annual SPYC Vintage Motor Classic held adjacent to our Club’s north porch. The event features cars, boats, and motorcycles from1979 and older. Enter your vehicle on-line or at the gate. Spectator admission is FREE. Don’t miss the 3rd Annual SPYC Member Art Show on February 13th, including other “On the Water” events such as the Valentine's Regatta and the St. Petersburg NOOD Regatta. Visit www.spyc.org/regattas for more information. I look forward to seeing you at the Club this month. Fair winds and calm seas,

Bill Waters, Commodore

The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige. FEBRUARY 2022 | SMOOTH SAILING

GENERAL MANAGER’S LOG 55

General Manager’s Log by: Rhett J. Robicheaux, CCM

H

ow time flies when you’re having fun! February will mark six months as your new GM. With that said, season is fast approaching, and we have a full slate of activities for all to enjoy here at the Club. As mentioned in previous articles, we are well under way with our Strategic Plan and the Master Plan to follow. Going through this process, there seems to be some confusion between the two plans, so here is an explanation of the differences. The Strategic Plan is an organization’s process of defining its direction and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue this direction. Whereas the Master Plan provides direction to develop or improve (land, a community, a building complex) through a long-range plan that balances and harmonizes all elements. The old adage is “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” A strategic plan is a shorter-term, three-to-fiveyear plan that is internally driven. Consisting of the following: • Revising or updating an organizations mission, vision, and core values • Identifying the most important goals for the organization for the next three to five years • Defining of objectives and action steps needed to achieve the goals • Strategy to measure accomplishments above The Master Plan, which is often confused with the Strategic Plan, is a high-level-big-picture process that typically plans for a timeframe of 10 to 20 years. This longer timeframe is important for any organization that is experiencing growth like we are. A Master Plan answers three questions: • Where is our organization now? • Where will we need to be in the future? • How do we get there?

can be we need to really reflect on what made this Club great! A rich history in sailing, a community social hub where friends and families alike can gather while enjoying each other’s company, multiple picturesque locations and a safe haven in troubling times—all reasons for the overall value of membership. In last month's Smooth Sailing we advertised some closing dates at the Pass-a-Grille Clubhouse this year for various reasons. Since that time, we have received some comments regarding these and why. We will be reviewing our existing policies and putting into place some guidelines to restrict closures out at PAG – more to come on this. In addition, there was an announcement regarding Holiday Events only taking place at our downtown location and not at PAG - this is incorrect - we will continue to run operations for Holiday Events at both locations just as we have in the past. In closing, 2022 is showing signs of being one of the busiest years the Club has encountered. Your SPYC Team is here ready to serve you, your families, and guests in all you plan to do at the Club. I look forward to meeting everyone in the coming months as I make my way around our various facilities.

Cheers!

Rhett J. Robicheaux, CCM General Manager, COO

Membership in a fine club is an earned privilege. Not only an opportunity to spend quality time with people who share your values, interest, and morale’s, but a place where prospective members/spouses meet and where families safely engage in recreational and social activities. Junior Sailing Update

by Todd Fedyszyn, Youth Sailing Director

ver the weekend of December 18-19, 2021, SPYC sailors Guthrie Braun and Ethan Danielson competed in the Interscholastic High School Sailing Association Singlehanded National Championship hosted at Virginia Key State Park in Miami. The top 18 full rig sailors from across the nation were selected to compete based on regional qualifier. Guthrie Braun sailed a near flawless event to take home the National Championship by a massive 74-point margin. Ethan Danielson finished 4th overall. Over the holidays last year the SPYC Junior Sailing Team made the annual trek south to Miami to compete in the Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta hosted by the Coral Reef Yacht Club. With competitors in all three laser fleets as well as the Opti RWB Fleet, SPYC was well represented.

In the Laser Full Rig division SPYC’s Guthrie Braun was our top performer finishing in 3rd place overall. In the Laser Radial Sidney Moyer finished 38th overall in the Gold Fleet. Also competing in the Laser Fleet were Sophia Fuller, Kate Danielson, Callen Burnett, Reece Ellis, Jan Mistak, Anthony Smart, Jack Carter, and Ethan Danielson. In the Opti RWB Fleet SPYC’s Rosie Simpson finished in 46th place in the Opti Gold Fleet. Also competing were Adam Mendelblatt and Reid Mendelblatt, Ryder Ellis and Leah Abrams. *Guthrie & Ethan are pictured on the cover of this issue.*

2022 Master Driver Team Race Regatta by Janet Walker, Regatta Chair

O

n the weekend of January 14th - 16th SPYC was proud to host the 14th Annual Master Driver Team Race Regatta in spite of all the Covid restrictions and travel issues. Five teams of six sailors from St. Francis YC, Annapolis YC, New York YC, Texas Corinthian YC, plus SPYC competed in this 2-on 2-team racing competition in J70s. Just over one complete Round Robin was sailed on Saturday before the winds died. Unfortunately, we had to cancel Sundays racing due to dangerous, unpredictable winds. It was exciting to watch as two J70s battled competitively against an opposing team in two J70s on a short “windward leeward” course, taking about 9 to 15 minutes per flight. Six umpires headed by Tom Rinda called the rule infractions to keep order on the course. Results are at www.spyc.org under "Regattas" > "MDTR". Texas Corinthian YC came first followed by New York YC, and SPYC was third. Our two boat team was skippered by

by Past Commodore David Mendelblatt, Regatta Chair

T

The legacy of Commodore Jennings was discussed on numerous occasions during the weekend. Many sailors and RC members shared memories of his impact on our sport. It was agreed that he would have enjoyed this event.

he John Jennings Memorial Regatta was hosted by SPYC on January 8th & 9th. The event served as the Midwinter Championship for the J88 Class. Sailors came from as far as New York and Chicago to participate and were treated to two beautiful, sunny days of sailing with winds from 7-10 knots. After seven races the team of Andy and Sarah Graff and their crew abord Exile won the championship and awarded the John Jennings Memorial Trophy. Grant Dumas and his crew aboard Warrior represented SPYC well and won the ORC division with all First Place finishes! RC volunteers (Maurice McGough, Terri McGough, Win Waxman, Pat Burrows, Janet Walker, Audrey Orgo, Liesa Waxman, George Pennington, Beth Pennington, Barbara Goodman, Paul Goodman, and Selga Sakss) also represented our Club well by providing high-quality racing for all competitors.

Next month we will be celebrating the accomplishments and contributions of our members to SPYC and the sport of sailing during the Yachting Recognition Awards program. Following is a brief history of the program. Please read on! “The first SPYC Awards party, held in 1971, was a gala affair attended by 200 mem-

bers. Certificates of Appreciation were presented to members who had distinguished themselves during the preceding twelve months in national or international yachting competition, race management or administration.” (The same as we do today!). Since the first Special Award in 1971 to Theodore E. “Ted” Tolson for his many years of devoted service to the club, six more early framed awards were presented: 1976 to Allison Jolly recipient of the Haig & Haig Trophy as “Yachtswoman of the Year; 1978 to two recipients: Lawrence J. “Kell” Hennessey as recipient of the Martini & Rossi Trophy for the National Cruiser Championship and again to Ted Tolson recipient of the Nathanael G. Herreshoff Trophy; 1979 to Thomas R. Downs for his dedication to SPYC’s ocean racing and the SORC; 1982 to John L. Powell (s/v Paper Tiger and Salty Tiger) for his decades of service and contributions to yachting; and in 1984 to Robert E. “Bob” Lee originator of the annual fishing tournament.

Take a stroll upstairs to find duplicates of the original six Certificates of Appreciation as well as current resolutions on display in the Hall of Fame located along the way to the upstairs offices! hat is a Poker Run? A Poker Run is not a race. It’s a Club tradition and an assembly of some of the most social and active boaters in the SPYC. On Poker Run Day, boaters meet at the Club docks and show off thier wellcurated boat themes. Upon arriving at the Club they will check-in and recieve a nautical map that will chart their path of adventure for the day. The map includes 5-8 different stops in which the boaters will travel to and collect a poker chip at each stop. The stops are a combination of gracious member’s waterfront homes and local waterside restaurants. All boats are tasked with visiting all the stops in the time allotted. Upon returning to the Club, each participant will turn in their tokens for poker cards and play a 5-Card Poker hand! Prizes are awarded for the Best Hand, Best Boat Theme, and Best Dock Stop. Kyle Runnfeldt Employee of the Year Runner-Up for 2021

John Brown • Employee of the Year for 2021 Congratulations to John Brown for winning the title of Employee of the Year for 2021! John is a 14 year, behind the scenes employee who has won Employee of the Month at least four times over the years! John is a part of our Housekeeping Department - you can find John doing many things here at the Club such as setting up rooms, polishing trophies, organizing, helping out in laundry with the tablecloths and napkins, and from time to time giving maintenance a hand with painting projects.

Congratulations to SPYC’s Kyle Runnfeldt for being selected as the Runner-Up for 2021’s Employee of the Year! Kyle has been an integral part of the Sailing Center team, handling the lion’s share of our fleet maintenance and ongoing sailing program support. Originally from Jacksonville, Kyle learned to sail in Florida Yacht Club’s youth sailing program before migrating to St. Pete for college. His positive attitude and steadfast reliability are some of the reasons why Kyle continues to be an amazing asset to the Club’s Waterfront Team.

John never says no – there is no task too big or too little that John can't handle. He is greatly appreciated by both the staff and the members, making him most deserving of this award. Thank you, John, for a job well done!

by Kevin Cross, Fleet Captain

F

or the Cruising Fleet, 2022 started with a near-record turnout to our January 6th luncheon which featured an amazing presentation, updates on January and February cruises and sign-ups for our annual Commodore’s Cruise. The main event involved Joy & Larry Wissing sharing highlights of their Mississippi River adventure “Going Uphill”. Following a kick-off party at SPYC Pass-a-Grille, the Wissings headed north on April 7, 2021 taking a route that involved going up-rivers or against the current. They covered some 1,500nm before reaching their destination in Marinette, Wisconsin on Sturgeon Bay. They completed their 5-month cruise on La Joy, a SeaPiper 35. Thank you to the Wissings for sharing their experience with the Fleet!

We have five cruises in January and February. Judi & Richard Ph agan wearing the 2022 Connie and Brian Smith Commodore Cruise Shirts organized the January “cruise-in” to SPYC downtown docks that included Vessel Safety Checks by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and Chris and Ben Roddey organized the January Carlouel cruise. Given overwhelming interest, we have two further cruises to Carlouel YC in February and our Bradenton cruise will have cruisers at both Twin Dolphin and Bradenton YC. The two-week Commodore’s Cruise features eight stops with vessels spread across 14 marinas/clubs to accommodate our growing fleet. We already have 30 boats signed up for all of part of the cruise. Judi Phagan and Barbara Weller have organized our Commodore’s Cruise shirts and are taking orders until February 3rd. For our next meeting on February 3rd, we will host Vicki and Randy Stacy who will share their Great Loop cruising adventure. We will also hear more about plans for our Commodore’s Cruise, February cruises, and our monthly Day Tripper luncheons. Come join us!

n December 13th, the Salty Sisters finished up their year with our Annual Christmas Party. Captain Jennifer Parramore introduced the traditional Salty skit performed by the Class of 2020. Pat Burrows, Helle Getz, Lori Hodges, Eleanor Koelsch, Debbie Lang, Terri McGough, Nona Pucciariello, and Mik Severini performed a fun synchronized swim skit and song. They’ve named their class “Nauti 8 Gone Viral.” Thanks were given to their teachers PC Sherry Welch and Co-Captain Dee Gill.

BROAD

T

he Broad Reachers ended 2021 on a high note. We had our Annual Christmas Lunch and Chinese Auction! Kerrie at PAG provided us with a wonderful traditional turkey lunch followed by a delicious slice of pumpkin pie. Thanks to all who came and participated in this annual tradition. Broads in attendence were: Liesa Waxman, Mary Moosbruger, Carol Hansen, Joanne Simmons, Nancy Strite, Charl Hadfield, Juliette Clark, Debbie Walcutt, Jennifer Parramore, KT Trudeau, Gloria Davis, and we welcomed our Broad Reachers Christmas Party

newest member Charlotte Robbins.

FEBRUARY 2022 | SMOOTH SAILING

They also called on the Class of 2021 to stand up and wished them well in the coming year; Tish Bowden, Bijie Ding, Audrey Orgo, Molly Raymond, Sandy Class of 2020 with Santa , Mrs. Claus & the Grinch Merrifield, Jennifer O’Neil, KT Trudeau, and Rhonda Whitehead. Gail Falkingham and Kathy Mansir along with their Social Committee gave a special thanks to our jolly Santa Claus (Larry Massingill), Mrs. Claus (Toni Smith), and the Grinch (Debbie Walcutt) for making the party festive and fun. Co-Captain Dee Gill thanked the FWSA team of Beverly Smoak, Jennifer Anderson, and Marti Cochran for a successful hosting of the Salty’s FWSA Interclub on December 14th. It was a huge event with 30-plus sailors, 20-plus Sunfish trailers and many Salties and Briny Brothers helping to make it a great event. Nancy Kadau sailing Nancy Kadau - 1st Place for the Salty Sisters came in first place in the Prams!!!

This past year, even with COVID hanging over us, we had a good year. Even though the Rainbow Regatta was canceled early, the Broads were ready with a team of five sailors ready to participate. Together with sailors from the Salty Sisters Rainbow team, the Broad Reachers participated in coaching sessions both on shore and on the water. Early this year we mourned the loss of Spencer Lucas, a great supporter of the Broad Reachers and sponsor of the Commodore Lucas Cup and Nancy Lucas Races. This year the Lucas Cup, with a record 16 sailors from other FWSA Clubs, was the most successful Cup yet!! Other activities in 2021: We celebrated our 50th Anniversary of the Broad Reachers, sailed to Hotel Zamora for lunch, attempted a sail to Shell Key, enjoyed our new floating dock, and just enjoyed sailing around PAG. Come join us for Saturday morning for some fun sailing and racing. You can participate as a sailor, race committee, or safety ashore. For more information about becoming a Broad Reacher, contact Carol Hansen at Carol@dband1.com.

Beautiful Yellowstone

Let’s Rally and Roll!!!…

I

t’s been quite a year for people who want to travel, especially in these continuing uncertain times. For those that have an RV, we can turn that uncertainty into an adventure. Imagine traveling down the road driving (or towing) your “house”. But we can leave that hesitation behind and head for that journey to the great outdoors. The RV allows for the freedom of travel, yet with the safety of isolation when we feel we need it. We have everything we need and can cocoon ourselves within while embracing ever changing scenery, historic landmarks, and beautiful landscapes. You can even decorate for the holidays or seek more cooler weather …. Brrr!!! But it’s also nice to return to Florida—the land of sunshine. To join the group and keep up with our events, where we will be making adventures happen, please contact Angela Kowalik at: SPYCRVLandCruisers@gmail.com

M

oving electronic body parts is something a Wing Shooter will do to extend the shooting life of his body. As you advance in age Newton’s 3rd law of motion can put a stop to your shooting hobby. That mass of lead, flying away at high speed, delivers an equal and opposite kick into your body. On the body side of the kick, the underlying reasons to stop shooting are numerous. It could be a bad back, a neck out of whack, loose parts inside the cranium or one of many other medical maladies that arrive with age. It’s cheaper to fix the gun side of the problem, that would be reducing the kick delivered to your shoulder. A softer kick can be obtained numerous ways. Gun weight is one, a heavy gun does not kick as hard as a light gun.

March 3rd

˚Meet-ups: 1st Thursday of the month - Downtown Club ˚Social time at 5:00 pm; Presentation at 5:30 pm ˚Reservations Required: www.spyc.org or (727) 892-6882 (You and your guests will receive Chef’s choice plated food at $10/pp and bar service is available.) The Passport Club invites all SPYC members who are frequent and or frequently-aspiring travelers who have our mission to join the club. There are no dues – just sign up! If you have a travel program you would like to share with avid travelers, contact Patsy Warmack at: patsywarmack@tampabay.rr.com

Those wishing to join are encouraged to contact: Gene Collins at genebcollins@hotmail.com (727) 385-4878 Padding helps too. You can wear one on your shoulder and put another one on your gun. Some guns are designed to redirect the kinetic energy of recoil to do work for you, like reloading the next shell. That one works well. On the more expensive side there are sophisticated shock adsorption systems, like the one shown above. The electronic body part of this story is my favorite. This particular Wing Shooter, we call him Longbeard, told his surgeon to install his pacemaker in his left shoulder. His right shoulder was reserved for shooting. Who is Longbeard? Find any Wing Shooter at the bar, buy him a drink and he’ll tell you. SMOOTH SAILING | FEBRUARY 2022
