CHAPTER SEVEN 2

COMMODORE’S LOG D

ear SPYC Members, Welcome to our first double issue of Smooth Sailing for the months of May and June. I hope you are enjoying the warmer weather at our pool-sides and out on the water. Friday Night Races have been a huge success with great turn-out. But the afternoon thunderstorms will soon intensify, as we get deeper into summer. So make plans to get out there this week! Over the last month, SPYC has hosted some great regattas, including the Lightning Mid-winters, NOOD, Valentines Day (under way now), North Gulf Challenge and Spring Foil Regatta. It feels good to see sailors from all over coming back to our Club. We look forward to more great events. Our Cruising Fleet is busy visiting many wonderful clubs on the Commodore’s Cruise. We are very fortunate to live in an area with so many great destinations a boat-ride away. Amy and I had the honor of attending their kick-off lunch, but unfortunately, cannot join the Fleet for the cruise. We wish them all the best for a fun and safe journey. On land, we are very happy to have been able to resume serving a Sunday Brunch Buffet. We also had wonderful a turn-out for Easter and our Grand Prix Garage Party. The Club Leadership is working hard, along with our staff, to find the right balance of safety and fun, as more members have received their vaccinations. Thanks to everyone for your patience during this process and for continuing to follow our house rules.

There are many improvements underway around our facilities: At the Sailing Center, with our 20 year lease official, we are making up-grades, which will enhance our abilities to enjoy sailing. The Heritage Lounge will be improved with plans underway to remodel the bathrooms and replace the chairs. Our main Clubhouse pool deck is receiving attention and work will soon be underway to refurbish this structure. Finally, congratulations go out to Ed Baird for being inducted into the America’s Cup Hall of Fame. Please join me in congratulating him on this well deserved recognition! Respectfully,

David Mendelblatt, Commodore

Some up-coming events to look forward to at the Club include: . Celebrate Mom with Brunch or Dinner - The Downtown Clubhouse is offering a special Mother’s Day Sunday Brunch, or treat her to a special Prix-Fixe Lunch at the Beach Club (reservations are required). . Enjoy Memorial Day specials or the Beach Festival at Pass-a-Grille. . Downtown Clubhouse will be hosting a Hypnotist Show & Dinner and a Kids Video Game Bus Party - all the same night! . RSVP for the High Society event featuring dinner & dancing with the sounds of Frank Sinatra.

The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige.

FEATURED ON THE ARTICLE WATER 5

March 19, 2021, by way of a virtual ceremony held at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron in Auckland, Ed Baird was inducted into the 2021 America’s Cup Hall of Fame. After a brilliant video relating to Ed’s distinguished career, his old teammate, Brad Butterworth, introduced his video acceptance speech and drank Ed’s share of the champagne!

* * *

[“The Herreshoff Marine Museum/ACHoF has inducted over ninety individuals since its founding in 1992. Candidates eligible for consideration include members of the crew, designers, builders, syndicate leaders, supporters, chroniclers, and other individuals of merit; each nominee is judged on the basis of outstanding ability, international recognition, character, performance, and contributions to the sport.”]

* * *

Ed’s Comments: “I was completely taken by surprise to learn of my inclusion to this amazing group. I had no idea I was being considered and couldn’t believe my ears when Gary Jobson told me on a video call. He said he wanted to see my face when he gave me the news!

Ed’s America’s Cup timeline: two-time winner of the America’s Cup—as coach of Team New Zealand in 1995 and as helmsman of Team Alinghi in 2007; 2000 Young America as Skipper; 2002-03 TV Commentator; 2010 Alinghi as coach & alternate helmsman.

As I've absorbed this distinction and learned more about those who have been inducted, to date, I still can’t believe that I'm part of this historic club. It’s such an honor being included with legendary names like Vanderbilt, Lipton, Herreshoff and Sopwith. I’m listed with Dennis Conner, Sir Peter Blake, Sir Russell Coutts and Ted Turner. I've been lucky enough to be on teams with over 20 of the recipients of this award, but I never dreamed that I would be included with them in the Hall. I’m an incredibly fortunate native of St. Petersburg, Florida, who happened to get involved in our sport at the right time, with terrific mentors and the tremendous support of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club and its members. I have great appreciation for all of my competitors and teammates over the years. I thank my parents and friends for encouraging me to keep racing. And I feel so fortunate to have had the incredible love and unwavering support of my wife, Lisa, from the day we met. Without her in my life, none of these wonderful accolades would have happened!

“I have one message for the young sailors in our club who are just starting out. The sport of sailing can do amazing things for you—the people you meet, the places you see and the experiences you have are life-changing. Enjoy it as much as you can. You never know where it will take you!”

Yachting Information Committee by Donna Sue Marks, Yachting Information Chair

T

he International Olympic Committee (IOC), World Sailing (WS), and the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee are working on a review of the proposed Mixed Two Person Offshore Keelboat Event for Paris 2024 Olympic competition. Why is this important? There are some challenges regarding Field of Play security, scope and complexity, broadcast cost and complexity, and World Sailing not having the opportunity to deliver an Offshore World Championship. What does this mean...More assessment of the Mixed Offshore Event is taking place. The IOC has requested that WS propose alternative event(s) for sailings 10th medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. A deadline from the IOC is in place for which WS must agree upon proposed alternatives.

As you read this, WS Mid-Year meeting will be held virtually May 10th-14th. Submissions for alternative events will be presented. Those events must adhere to criteria framework provided by the IOC. They will discuss the submissions ahead of making their recommendations to Council. The World Sailing Council will meet on May 14, 2021 across two sessions and will discuss and vote on the submissions. This will ensure the process concludes ahead of the IOC deadline for new proposals, which is May 26, 2021. Any bets on what the alternative sailing event(s) will be? I am curious to know what you think - email your feedback to: dsmarks64@gmail.com. I am leaning towards a highperformance event, at this point it is anyone’s guess.

SPYC Junior Sailing Update by Todd Fedyszyn

O

ver the weekend of April 10th -11th, the SPYC Junior Sailing Team competed in the annual Sailfest Regatta hosted by the Sarasota Sailing Squadron. With over 200 sailors in attendance, this was one of the biggest local regattas of the last year. With a late season cold front passing through, conditions for the weekend were full on with 20-30 knots of breeze and frequent storms. Sailors were fortunate to get in three races on Saturday before the conditions deteriorated and unfortunately racing on Sunday was cancelled due to heavy storms. In the Opti RWB fleet our SPYC sailors once again showed that hard work pays off. John Hartney took home the overall win as well as 1st overall in the blue fleet. Rosie Simpson (pictured to the right) finished in 3rd overall and 2nd in red fleet, Sophia Fuller was 5th overall, Chris Shaffer was 6th overall and 2nd in blue, Ryder Ellis was 7th overall and 3rd in blue, and Jackson Lee was 9th overall. Leah Abrams finished 18th overall and 1st in white fleet, and Bennett Lamb finished 28th overall and 3rd in white.

Also competing in the Opti RWB were Adam and Reid Mendelblatt, Reece Ellis, Wesley Wood, Jan Mistak, Blake Vincent, Maija and Anna Andert, Gloria Privis, Finn Cox, Parker Connell, Cole Rogers, and Jad Aberdrabbo. On the Laser course SPYC was once again well represented with 11 sailors competing in the Laser Radial and 4.7 fleets. Guthrie Braun was our top performer in the Radial class finishing in 2nd place overall. Guthrie was followed by Preston Weaver in 6th overall and Ethan Danielson in 7th. In the Laser 4.7 fleet Dorothy Mendelblatt finished 5th overall and was 2nd female. Also competing were Ava Shakespeare, Logan Rimel, Peyton Weaver, Sidney Moyer, Kate Danielson, Bella Shakespeare, and Jack Carter. On the Green Fleet course only one race was sailed as the conditions proved to be extremely challenging with big winds and waves. Our new racers displayed true grit fighting hard and showing everyone that they are the upcoming stars of the future. Representing SPYC were Reece and Scarlett Bizouarn, Ethan Cox, Cooper Lee, Thomas Weidner, and Dalton Cellemare. SMOOTH SAILING | MAY-JUNE 2021

ON THE WATER 8

How many times have you entered the Club through the East entrance and walked by the flagpole—or, even better, had your picture taken standing there in front of the mysterious presence who resides there—and wondered about her history? The mystery is revealed. Please read on! The ‘Old Girl’ adorned the bow of an 1881 Glasgow built iron hulled British Barque, Duncraig. [Google this ship for an interesting story and picture of our “Old Girl’ on the bow!]. She was later sold to a Norwegian shipping firm. In 1921, she was towed to Bermuda dismasted and sold at auction in St. George for use as a coal lighter (barge). At that time the figurehead was removed and mounted in front of the new owner’s office. After many years as a lighter and the passing of coal burners, the vessel was eventually towed to sea and committed to Davy Jones’ locker at the bottom of the sea. During a visit to Bermuda in 1925, Mr. Walter Fuller persuaded the owner of the figurehead to sell it to him for 100 lbs. He then very graciously donated it to the Club and Mr. Wally Bishop worked on restoration and beautification of the ‘Old Girl’. The next time you pass by, take a look at her— An ’Old Girl’ of many years and experiences. Affectionately known as ...

Congratulations, Donna Sue Marks!!! Recipient of US Sailing’s Virginia Long Sail Training Service & Support Award * * * The Sail Training Service & Support Award honors individuals who, through their efforts, unselfishly assist and enable a sailing program or sailing instruction in a supportive role. As a recipient of this award, Donna Sue embodies the nature of this award by continually offering her skills as a Professional Race Officer, working closely with both youth and adult events. Donna Sue has also championed the “kites” helping to increase racing venues and opportunities throughout the region.

As Commodore of the Florida Sailing Assoc. (FSA), Donna Sue started her tenure by traveling to as many sailing centers, clubs and events as possible promoting sailing/racing and helping build knowledge for Professional Race Officers as well as to hear from the stakeholders throughout the state – how can FSA be more supportive and relevant to its members? While FSA Cmdr., Donna Sue worked tirelessly to support youth racing by offering youth regatta reimbursement grants to families of member organizations. She later agreed to include organizational training grant reimbursements to help close the gap in training needs throughout the state and has shared training information with not only SPYC, but also with the region and beyond.

73rd Winter Lightning Championship

by Karen Park, Event Chair

I

n the year 2020, March brought challenges to our entire world. The Lightning Regatta was the first regatta that had to be cancelled at SPYC due to Covid-19. We were able to host a successful event this year with a smaller registration than in “normal” years. We had 25 participants due to social distancing confines. Our largest event ever was 77 boats! There was outstanding racing on Tampa Bay. PRO Todd Fedyszyn led a flawless team of Race Committee. He pulled off three races a day over the first three days and then cancelling racing on the last day due to no wind. No one can remember ever having that many races at this regatta in only three days! The main event was won by David Starck from Buffalo, NY with brother Tom Starck and Jenna Probst crewing (bow #12). The Masters was won by Bill Faude from Chicago with Amy Simonsen and Ched Proctor crewing (bow # 7). JoAnn and Greg Fisher of Charleston, SC won the Colin Park Memorial trophy for highest place husband and wife (bow # 18). The Lightning is truly an International Class with Fleets worldwide. They hold a World Championship every two years rotating through three continents. We had teams from four countries and eleven states at this year’s event. If all goes well we expect the 2022 event to see pre-Covid numbers with over 65 boats. It will be a Worlds year with the World event being held in Wrightsville Beach, NC.

RIDERS CLUB by Bob Frazee

O

n Monday, March 22nd five riders met up at 9:00 am to start our journey to the Florida Keys. After meeting up at the North rest area on the Skyway Bridge, our journey started out on I-275 South-->>I-75 South-->>FL 31 East-->>FL 78 East-->>Fl 29 South-->>to FL 80 West where we “fueled up” with some lunch at the Log Cabin BBQ. Afterwards we took FL 80 East back to FL 29 South onto FL 41 South, which is the Tamiami Trail. This route took us through the Big Cypress National Preserve in the Everglades.

We headed south, and east, on The Loop Road which took us further into the depths of the Everglades; where we hoped to see some alligators. Our hopes were fulfilled as we saw at least 2 dozen of them! Some were in the water or along the banks, but most were in the grass right along the roadside getting some sun. This road was mostly a hot and dusty dirt road, and rejoined with the Tamiami Trail after about 30 miles. Seeing so many alligators certainly made the detour worthwhile.

We then continued east on the Tamiami Trail to CR 997 South into Homestead where we stayed at the Best Western. After cleaning up we had a great dinner at a local favorite, Rositas Mexican Restaurant. The next morning we left at 9:00 am, after breakfast at the hotel, and headed south on CR 997-->>US 1 South-->>to Card Sound Road South. This took us across Card Sound onto Key Largo, where we continued south on CR 905A-->>CR-C 905 West-->> onto US 1; where we traveled US 1 West to Marathon and stopped at our hotel. After checking in and dropping off our gear, we tried out some local fare at Porky’s Bayside. Afterwards, four of us headed to Key West and did some site seeing. We spent some time watching the scene on Duval Street before heading back to the Blackfin Resort in Marathon. That evening our dining experience lead us to a place called the Barracuda Grill. Wednesday morning we left after breakfast, and made our way on US 1 North to South Miami. We then detoured to Key Biscayne and met up with the sister of one of the Riders for lunch. This route traveled was US 1 North -->> FL 821 North -->> FL 836 East -->> I-95 South -->> Rickenbacker Causeway which took us to Key Biscayne, where lunch took place at the Crandon Golf Club. Afterwards we headed down Rickenbacker Causeway back to I-95 North-->>I-595 West-->>I-75 North-->>to FL 27 North into Clewiston, where we lodged at the Plaza Travel Inn. Our evening dinner adventure brought us to a place called Brenda’s. However, they did not serve food so we had a drink and some popcorn. Back at the hotel we noticed a Mexican place right around the corner and decided to check it out. It wasn’t a dine-in restaurant but, they had a fairly extensive takeout menu, and served some pretty tasty tamales. Thursday morning, after fueling up, we left at 8:30 am and traveled back on FL 27 North-->>FL 70 West-->>I-75 North->>to I-275 North back to St. Petersburg. The entire trip was 925 miles start to finish, with great weather the whole time. What an adventure! Everyone enjoyed the trip and I’m sure we will plan another multiday trip next year. We’re already kicking around a couple ideas.

CRUISING

FLEET by: Willy Bain, Fleet Captain

Welcome Aboard!!! …

C

March was a busy month for the Cruising Fleet with two cruises and our Monthly Dinner. The Cruises were a mid-week cruise to Bradenton Yacht Club and a weekend cruise to Marina Jacks. March 9th -11th saw the Fleet at Bradenton Yacht Club with five boats at the dock and two boats anchored out. Our Port Directors (Kevin and Debbie Hopper) arranged for a splendid dinner for the cruisers and a very laid-back couple of days of dinghy rides and bicycle excursions. March 18th–21st found the Fleet at Marina Jack’s in Sarasota. Ten boats and one “Iron Dinghy” participated. Our Port Directors (Jaleen Hartney, Ben & Chris Roddey) planned a full weekend of events.

Enjoying the seafood!

The first night included Docktails on the dock in front of “Next Chapter” followed by a great seafood spread for 24 Cruisers at Marina Jack’s restaurant. Saturday included tours of Marie Selby Night on the town Botanical Gardens, Ringling Museum, and the Farmers Market. Saturday night saw the Fleet at three local restaurants (Selva, Duvals, & Elements). All three were worth the trip! Finally, our Monthly dinner had a tremendous turnout with 48 Cruisers forcing us to move to the Ballroom. During the dinner we had our annual Commodore’s Cruise signup. It resulted in what I believe is an unprecedent number of participants; 28 boats! The enthusiasm for cruising within the Club has certainly grown this year.

n April, we resumed our meeting at the Club after a year. It was nice to reconnect in person. We’ll have our last meeting on May 4th before summer travels. Also in April, some of us ventured to the new Oak Alley RV Resort in Webster for a long “free” weekend – our Spring Fling! On arrival day Thursday, we gathered for some get-acquainted cocktails, RV stories, and summer plans. On Friday, we explored the park area then some of us ventured out for dinner. We had a great steak at the Whispering Oaks Winery; cooked on their open outdoor grill. Although we intended to stay until Sunday, we all left Saturday to avoid the impending weather. Those making the trip were Becky & Neal Crosson, Howie & Barbara Mednick, Ken & Corrine St. Jean, and us—Angela & Brian Kowalik. It was a great “free” getaway! Oak Alley is offering 3 nights free until October, and 50% off for returning guests until then too! Others can still enjoy this great offer.

pring arrived in time for our March 23rd golf outing at the Eagles Golf Club in Odessa. It was a venue for nature lovers as we witnessed sightings of unique birds, those Florida alligators ,and scampering little fox squirrels. Fortunately, we chose the Lake Course which calmed our nerves with wide fairways, but on the other hand we experienced ample water to contend with to swallow up our golf balls! We hope to go back and play the Forest Course for another event. Again, we feasted on a hearty lunch outside under umbrella tables. An honorable mention goes to the ” Burger with the Egg on Top”. Broad Reachers ready to sail!

he Broad Reachers soon will be wrapping up Saturday sailing at Pass-a-Grille, so that we can send our Optis downtown to the Sailing Center for use in the summer Youth Sailing program. Supporting youth sailing is a tradition for the Broad Reachers. We now do it through financial contributions and through supplying equipment for the summer programs. In earlier days, after their organization as a club in 1971, the Broad Reachers worked with youth sailors and their parents in helping build Clearwater Prams to be used for kids’ sailing at PAG. When lack of wind kept us off the water, we wrapped up our racing classes with a final session on shore with Coach Charlie Lalanne. The highly relevant topic Charlie chose for the day was, “How to race in light air,” which unfortunately required at

nce a year the Wing Shooters Society hands out a gift of some sort to our members. It happens at one of our monthly meetings. If you miss that meeting you are pretty much on your own to extract your gift from the jaws of the Grand Marshall. That’s a slight exaggeration, but let’s move on.... The gift is a way of balancing our annual budget back to zero. You can think of it as getting some of your membership fee back. Since our fees are next to nothing that tells you the relative value of the gift. At this moment if you are thinking hats and cups, you are standing on home plate. You’ve likely seen the embroidered shirts and hunting vests frequently

least some air to put Charlie’s tips into practice. The coaching class nonetheless provided helpful information we will all put to use on those all-too-frequent light air days we see this time of year. Before sending our Optis downtown, we will have a few more races and fun sails, including visiting some of our favorite locations reachable from the club: Hotel Zamora and Shell Island. Please consider joining us for Saturday morning sailing at the PAG clubhouse. Contact Carol Hansen at carol@dband1.com. modeled by our members. Do not be fooled, those highly valued items are personal discretionary spending events. The Wing Shooters Society could raise its annual membership fee and return a more substantial gift. That might not be a good idea. You must understand the annual gift is vigorously discussed inside the membership. It’s one of the topics that make our monthly meetings a hoot. I can’t imagine the elevated oratory a more valuable gift might ignite. That’s the thing about the Wing Shooters Society, our monthly meetings alone are worthy of the membership fee. We meet on the 2nd Thursday of the month.

n March 24th, the Salty Sisters held a session on Salty history and traditions led by Vicki Posner, Captain Els Wiemken and Co-Captain Jennifer Parramore. Several newer and long-standing members joined in with anecdotes and questions. Vicki presented a history she’d compiled from Smooth Sailing articles about Salties for the Club’s 100th anniversary in 2009, full of lively and proud moments of our past and current members’ accomplishments. The following week, to celebrate Easter, the Salty Sisters gathered in the SPYC Waterfront Room to enjoy a nice Easter lunch after visiting the Salty Sister’s Rummage sale at poolside. Our traditional Easter Bunny hopped in for a visit and gave out candy. Beautiful Easter decorations were arranged by Nancy Reeser, Carol Crawford and Nita George.

Captain Els thanked the following Salty Sisters who volunteered April 2nd-4th for the N D Regatta: Tricia Billings, Trisha Birkenstock, Sue Brautigam, Gloria Davis, Helle Getz, Barbara Goodman, Lori Hodges, Helen Larsen, Valerie Massengill, Terri McGough, Barbara Mehaffey, Karen Park, Jennifer Parramore, Beth Pennington, Gina Bowden-Pierce, Gail Poffenberger, Selga Sakss, Janet Walker, Susan Wallace and Joy Wissing. Twenty-five Salty Sisters showed up at the Sailing Center on Wednesday, April 7th for 420 lessons, Pram, and Ideal sailing. Unfortunately, light air forced a change of plans. No Prams or Ideals sailed. But Skipper’s Hats Lori Leadbetter, Els Wiemken, Nancy Kadau, Helen Larsen, and Janet Walker led 420 rigging class. A few Salties got a short ride around the basin, but the wind was too light to run races.

Applications available starting Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at the Downtown Clubhouse front desk. Membership in the Salty Sisters is open to women members of SPYC.
