COMMODORE’S LOG

Hello Friends.....Wow! April was surely a busy month with the Poker Run, Yachting Recognition Awards, Casino Night and Easter Brunch to name a few of the events our members enjoyed. The Dock Blowout/Key West Street Party was a blast as well.

Regatta activity was in full force with the 81Bay/Ted Irwin Memorial and Suncoast Race Week, and the Salty Sisters hosted the FWSA Rainbow Regatta This event was well attended and extremely well organized. Unfortunately, the wind did not cooperate, but the participants enjoyed their experience here. Regatta season will conclude with the USODA Team Trials from April 29th to May 7th.

The Club is gearing up for a major regatta event of the year, the J/70 Worlds to be held from October 27th to November 4th. SPYC is truly honored to host this prestigious world championship event. This year the Annual Viewing of the Kentucky Derby event has been moved upstairs to the ballroom to accommodate a larger attendance. The Mother Daughter Chocolate Candy Making event is planned for May 13th, and don’t forget the Mother’s Day Brunch on May 14th. June events include, the #NOFILTER Band June 10th, SPYC Kids Video Game Bus Party on the same evening and a family friendly Summer Pool Party at Pass-a-Grille on June 11th. If you have not joined us yet for one of our monthly Downtown Themed Dinner Buffet nights, please do so on Tuesday, May 9th and Tuesday, June 13th - more details in this issue.

Don’t forget that the Wednesday Lunch Buffet is back. Now you can enjoy the lunch buffet on Wednesdays and Fridays. Interest in our Club by prospective members continues to be quite active. The Board of Directors approved 23 membership applications at the April meeting. A waiting list is now in place in certain membership categories.

At the April Board meeting the Master Facilities Planning Committee presented recommendations based on membership feedback from previous membership surveys and focus groups. More information will follow after the Board has considered this recommendation. Hope to see you around the Club.

General Manager’s Log

Ican’t believe summer is knocking at our doorstep already. We have blown through our Regatta and busy season so rapidly. With the world around us still trying to get back on its feet here at the Club, our members have surely found their safe haven. The Clubs usage has been remarkable to say the least. Thank you, membership, for your loyalty and support of the Club and for all the great things we are accomplishing.

Even though we are embarking on our slower season, I have a feeling it isn’t going to slow down too much. The number of new members who have joined over the last year and are using the Club will continue throughout the summer. We need to keep in mind that even though the crowds may not be as big as in the height of the season, reservations are needed in the areas we request them. And if you have a change in plans, please let us know.

Reservations – Please try and honor the location where you made a reservation, and if you decide to dine in another outlet of the Club, please notify your original reservation location. If you are unable to make your reservation, please contact us as soon as possible. It will permit us to offer a greater choice of times and size of party to your fellow members. A fee of $10.00/pp will be assessed for “no shows” which will compensate the staff that was assigned to your table reservation. Even if you dine in another outlet or decide to go to PAG without notifying us you will still be charged. Remember our staff depends on you being here, without you they do not get paid.

It’s also that time of year to start thinking about the future leaders of our Club. In June we will be sending out our SPYC Committee Interest Form for those of you who want to jump on the bus in making the St. Peterburg Yacht Club the best it can be. In Jim Collin’s business classic – “Good to Great”, he states you need the right people on the bus and in the right seats before deciding where it’s going.

In a Club, there is nothing more truthful than this. In a recent industry article, I read that General Managers from various clubs were surveyed on ‘what is a more important factor to effective club governance: board recruitment or board education? Two out of three GMs think board education is more important than recruitment. I look at it a little differently in that board education is fluid – it is ongoing but getting the right people on the bus in the right seats first is the most important task at hand. We are looking for a few good men and women - please let us know if you have interest in the future of your Club.

Summer is just around the corner and camps are filling up quickly. Be sure to add your name to the waiting list if you have an interested sailor. Our team will do their best to share what opportunities are available.

As you are already aware the Dock Project was approved and by June, we should see the demo stage of the project begin. We are very excited to get this project underway so we can all benefit from the state-of-the-art marina we will have.The Master Planning Committee is also working on a recommendation for the Board of Directors and Membership. More information on these developments in the coming months.

In closing, hurricane season is just around the corner so please go through your hurricane plan and be prepared well in advance. I look forward to seeing everyone in the coming months as I make my way around our various facilities.

HOW TO VISIT

RECIPROCAL CLUBS

Did You Know? There are 38 Florida Yacht Clubs that are part of the FCYC (Florida Council of Yacht Clubs), as well as 300+ Yacht Clubs throughout the United Stated, and the world, which are available for SPYC members to visit at no extra charge. Below are the steps to gain access to participating clubs:

2)Click “Member Central” then click on “Club Information” .

3)Scroll down on this page and click on “Reciprocal Clubs” - As a reminder, each club is a separate organizationplease be kind and courteous when visiting our fellow reciprocals.

A “Letter of Introduction” is required to visit a national or international club that we have reciprocity with. Members must request a “Letter of Introduction” from the Membership office a minimum of 72 hours in advance , prior to your travel date. You must also bring your membership card when you visit.

This Letter of Introduction informs the visiting club that your SPYC membership is valid and in good standing. Here is how to request your letter:

When visiting a club that is part of the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs (FCYC) , a letter of introduction is normally not required. Please contact the visiting club prior to your arrival to see if a letter will be necessary. Charges are billed directly to your SPYC membership account. •Each club within the FCYC offers one complimentary night stay in their marina once per month –this includes your home Club.

•Some clubs may limit use for Non-Resident members.

•Payment for services is typically by credit card at reciprocal clubs, other than the FCYC clubs.

• We strongly recommend that you contact the visiting club ahead of time for dining/marina reservations. There are certain holidays where SPYC members may not have access to a visiting club.

75th Running of the Winter Lightning Championship

On March 18-22, the SPYC was host to the 75th running of the Winter Championship. This is also the longest running event that our Yacht Club holds. We had 41 boats from 17 states; from Oregon to Massachusetts. Four countries represented with Argentina, Chile and Columbia sending teams.

Our Race Committee team led by Youth Sailing Director Todd Fedyszyn ran 6 flawless races. Sunday was quite chilly and breezy so we delayed on shore. The majority of the sailors are lake sailors and hadn’t been in their boats for close to 6 months and with the favorable wind forecasts it wasn’t necessary to push the competitors too hard on their first day. The wind dropped a bit, the temperature went up a bit and we were able to get 2 races in in the afternoon with wind blowing 16-20kts. Javier Conte from Argentina won the first race and Augie Diaz from Coral Reef Yacht Club won the second.

Sunday evening the sailors were treated to the ever popular potato & salad bar dinner. They enjoyed the chance to connect with old friends that they have missed due to the years of Covid. I think the high spot was the Whiffle Pickle Ball competition. Thank you to Commodore Smith and his lovely wife Connie for joining us and the words of welcome to our guests.

Monday’s racing was very similar to Sunday. The temperature was a little cooler, the winds were 13-16kts. and the water was less choppy. Felipe Robles from Chile won the third race and Jody Starck from the Buffalo Canoe Club won race 4. Tuesday welcomed us with sunny skies and temperature approaching 80. The winds subsided to 10-12 kts. Jody Lutz from Metedeconk River YC in NJ won Race 5 and Felipe Robles won Race 6. Tuesday sailors were treated to their annual buffet banquet dinner. This is a favorite night for them and we haven’t been able to hold the banquet since 2019 due to Covid restrictions.

Thank you again to Commodore Smith and Connie for attending this event. There were some special awards given out and a burgee presentation from Niantic Bay Yacht Club Wednesday brought us a day of no wind. We tried our best to give them more races but decided to end on the 6 races we already had.

The Lightning is widely known as a “Family” boat. There were at least 15 boats sailing with at least 2 of three people from one family. Husbands, wives, in-laws, siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews! This year the PanAm Games will be held in Chile in November and the Lightning is one of the sailboats selected. The format this year is that each 3 person boat is required to have 2 of 3 on board to be female. We had 11 boats participating being Pan Am hopefuls. US Trials are in May in North Carolina.

The International Lightning Class Association governs these boats. They are sailed worldwide and hold the World Championship every 2 years rotating from North America to South America to Europe. This year the Worlds will be held in Columbia in late November. There were 8 boats competing that are intending to compete at the Worlds.

Trophies were presented at the Sailing Center on Wednesday afternoon. 2023 Champion is Jody Starck with her brother-in-law Tom and their niece Elizabeth crewing. 2nd Place went to Jody Lutz with his brother Jay and Chris Schon as crew. 3rd Place went to Felipe Robles with Paula Herman and Carmina Malsch. The Masters

Championship is held at the same time. The skipper must be a minimum of 55yrs and combined crew age of 130 yrs. This years

Masters Champion is Jody Lutz with Jay and Chris Schon . 2nd Place went to David Starck with Jenna Probst and Debbie Probst (mother of Jenna). 3rd Place to Augie Diaz with Kim Couranz and Taylor Scheuermann . The Colin Park Memorial trophy is awarded to the highest placing husband and wife team. This year's award went to last year's winners, Ryan and Tesse Ruhlman - pictured above with Event Chair, Karen Park.

ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE Update

We have been busy! Recap: We had some fun events in April. We started the month with Tall Ship events, author Will Sofrin of “All Hands On Deck” , and our Annual Downtown Poker Run.

Then on April 15th, we had our Casino Night, full of casino games, raffle prizes, DJ, dancing, and fun! We finished off the month with our Dock Blowout/Key West Street Party, where we closed the street in front of SPYC and partied with a live band. Bicycling Gr up

The Bicycling Group at Downtown SPYC is growing every month. For March, a hardy group of 14 riders met at the Club, then rode to the Skyway Fishing Pier Park and back (about 29 miles). We had both regular bikes as well as ebikes. After the ride, we had a delicious lunch at the Club then planned our next two rides. For April 11th we planned to make a trip back to Gulfport, and we added two turns that we did not make on our first Gulfport ride. This ride was approximately 28 miles. Stay tuned for an upcoming issue of Smooth Sailing for details on how this ride turned out. If you are interested in joining one of our rides, please contact Douglas Townes ( det949@mindspring.com ). Our May 9th ride is planned for the Ream Wilson Trail in Clearwater. We will meet at 9:45 am on the lower level of the downtown parking garage.

Ingredients

4 ears shucked Corn on the Cobb

½ cup Shredded Cotija Cheese

¼ Mayonnaise

¼ cup Sour Cream

1 bunch Cilantro leaves and tender stems chopped

½ tsp Ancho Chile Powder

½ tsp. Smoked Paprika Powder

½ tsp Kosher Salt

2 cloves Garlic, minced

1 Lime cut into quarters

Grilled Fresh from Florida Corn “Elote” (Grilled Mexican Street Corn) Serves 4 ppl

COOKING DIRECTIONS

· In a stainless-steel bowl combine mayonnaise, Cotija, sour cream, cilantro, chile powder, smoked paprika powder, salt and garlic, mix well and keep refrigerated.

· Brush corn with olive oil and place on a preheated grill over high heat and while continuously turning and rotating, cook until golden brown.

· Remove from heat and place on serving platter, generously distribute sauce over the corn and serve with lime wedges....Enjoy!

Congratulations to SPYC's New Executive Pastry Chef...

It is with great pleasure to introduce myself to you. My name is Natalia Nunez Torres, I graduated from Escuela Hotelera de San Juan Puerto Rico , summa cum laude, majoring in pastry arts with an emphasis on chocolate and breads.

After graduation, I began teaching pastry classes at my alma mater as well as the Catholic University of Puerto Rico. In addition, I also worked at the Hotel Rincon of the Seas in Puerto Rico creating decadent pastries and cakes for large events including weddings, birthdays, baby showers, and graduations... to name a few.

I am always aspiring to take my professional skills to the next level by learning and growing. Since 2019 I have had the pleasure of serving as the assistant pastry chef for the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. Now, I am honored to announce that as of April 2023 I will be the lead pastry chef for the Club. It is my commitment to provide exceptional service with dedication and a passion for pastry art. Thank you and I look forward to many years serving our members.

CRUISING FLEET

For the first time in many years, the Cruising Fleet ventured as a group to Naples. A swap arranged with the Naples YC provided capacity for us to enjoy each other’s clubs for three days in mid-March. Many of our cruisers opted to stop at other FCYC clubs en-route to break up the journey and check off some boxes on their FCYC Cruising Logs working toward their 2023 Founder’s Award (earned by visiting, by boat, at least 13 FCYC clubs in a calendar year).

Those making the journey were rewarded with a fun-filled time organized by Port Directors, Kelly Lee and Jay Rice. Highlights included docktails aboard Mac n’ Rice III, a delicious meal in a private dining room at Naples YC, a scavenger hunt on the Naples beach, plenty of shopping, and for a brave few, a very cold dinghy ride to enjoy lunch at Naples Sailing & Yacht Club. On the return journey, six boats stopped in Venice to extend the fun and check in on fellow cruisers stranded with a mechanical issue. After some paddleboarding, bike rides, shopping and some tiki bar and dining time at the Venice YC, we made our way safely home, stranded boaters and all.

March also included other “firsts” for the Fleet. We had our first DayTripper’s luncheon at The Getaway which was enjoyed by all. We had our first outing to see a Lightning game with 30 in attendance and eight boats docking at downtown Tampa for the weekend. And, we had nine fleet boats serve as “bravo” boats during the Tall Ship’s St Pete event assisting with security during the “Parade of Sail”. This makes us appreciate the variety of activities our great city and club offer!

Check back in the next issue of Smooth Sailing for photos from our 2023 Commodore’s Cruise taking place in late April. With 33 boats following various itineraries to Captiva, Key West and Stuart, FL, its sure to be an adventure!

We have some interesting characters in the Wing Shooters. A guy we call Pull was taught to fly by his Army Air Corps father who had flown the hump into China during WW2. This guy, John Hanner, was taught to fly by instruments since he was so young and short he couldn’t see out of the window. Pull flew solo on his 16th birthday, the 1st day possible. After high school Pull walked into the Post Office intending to join the Coast Guard. He ended up in the Navy. After his Navy days were over Pull pursued a career guided by interest and opportunity. As a cabinet maker he landed a job in the boating industry. He was summarily fired because the drawers he built for a sailboat landed on the cabin sole the first time the boat heeled over. Pull stayed in the construction industry with a successful career as a building contractor and real estate broker. He still works as a building consultant and tinkers with wood projects and has incredible stories from his Navy days. He was assigned to a carrier based A-3 heavy bomber. His plane flew out of the Eastern Mediterranean with potential missions on the northside of the Black Sea. When you see him at the Club, ask him what happened with the Coast Guard and that one A-3 bombing mission, averted by diplomacy, where his plane would have ditched in the mountains of Greece.

June 1st: Warren Ross, Ski Haute Route: Chamonix to Zermatt - Ski mountaineering is a little-known specialty sport. Its Holy Grail is the Ski Haute Route through the French and Swiss Alps from Chamonix to Zermatt, through some of the most beautiful high mountain-scapes in the world. Some make it through....and some don’t!

RIDERS CLUB

In March, 4 riders embarked on our 1st road trip of 2023 to Daytona for Bike Week. Our journey took us north on I-256 to Veterans Highway north to Crystal River. Then east on US44 to CR486 east to CR 491 north to SR 200 into Ocala. After a lunch break at the Horse and Hound restaurant, we headed east on SR 40 to US 1 in Ormond Beach, just north of Daytona Beach.

Destination Daytona is located here at the Harley Davidson dealership, and this is one of the main venues for all the vendors to set up there displays, with every kind of clothing, motorcycle accessories and hundreds of new and used motorcycles along with dozens and dozens of custom motorcycles for sale.

During our 3 day stay, we also visited several of the other locations around the Daytona Beach area, and test drove some motorcycles at the test site set up at the Daytona Speedway. Another big attraction was the entertainment, with bands playing throughout the day and night at several of the bars along US 1, on Main Street in Daytona Beach, and at Destination Daytona.

We took a different route on the way home, taking US 92 west to SR 44 west to SR 19 south to SR 33 south to CR 582 west to I-275.

The Riders Club usually meets for a ride every Thursday with a stop somewhere for lunch. We generally leave about 9:00 am and get back to St. Petersburg around 3:00 pm. Anyone who is interested can contact Bob Frazee for additional information.

RV LAND CRUISERS

Have you ever considered going on a professional guided RV Tour, or wondered what it’s all about? It’s like taking a cruise but you do it in your RV. Someone else does all the planning, and you just show up and enjoy yourself!

Why consider taking one?

Well, for starters, it’s a stress-free and safe way to travel as the planning is done for you from the campgrounds to the excursions and even some meals are included, and there is safety in numbers (especially when exploring new locations in and outside of the U.S.). You’ll see things that you might not even know were there. And the camaraderie of traveling with others will create instant bonds where you can talk “shop” about your RV, explore the area together, and share travel experiences. You could even meet your new best friend!

So what is an RV Caravan?

An RV Caravan travels from location to location moving between destinations on a pre-planned route. Rather than nose-to-tail travel (convoy style), scattered travel is recommended so that you can travel at your own pace enjoying the sites (and wildlife) along the way. Some popular RV tours include Alaska, and the Canadian Maritimes, or how about a trip down the Mississippi River Road, the East Coast, West Coast, or the entire Route 66?

And what is a Rally?

A “rally” is where RVers meet and stay at one location and all the events occur from that central location. Once you arrive at the rally point, your adventure happens near and around you (and you don’t have to move the RV). Rallies might be focused on exploring a geographic area like Washington DC, San Antonio, New Orleans, or the Black Hills and Badlands, or be based around an event like the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, Rose Bowl Parade, Calgary Stampede, or NATO Festival & Tattoo

FWSA Rainbow Regatta

The 2023 FWSA Rainbow Regatta was held on Tuesday, April 4th. The Salty Sisters hosted this year’s event at the Elva Rouse and North Shore Parks. We had eight FWSA member clubs participate: Salty Sisters, Broad Reachers, Luffing Lassies, Windlasses, Bitter Ends, Rhumb Runners, Dinghy Dames and Bowchasers. In total there were 60 competitors, 44 Race Committee, two Professional Photographers, three spectator boats, and dozens of other volunteers. The only thing missing….……. was the wind!!!

At 8:45 that morning, Prams, Optis and Sunfish all left the beach and headed out to their respective racecourses. After about 45 minutes of fighting the incoming tide and the lack of wind, the Prams & Optis hitched a tow out to their course. Both the Sunfish and Prams & Optis started a race and then about 20 minutes later, the dreaded "Abandon Race Flag" went up. Thanks to the spectator boats and the guys from the Sailing Center, all the boats were towed either to the Sailing Center or back to the beach. It was disappointing, but still, everyone had a great time.

Captain Dee Gill thanked the Salty Sister’s Jennifer Anderson and PC Jennifer Parramore for Co-Chairing the event. Marti Cochran handled all the “logistics” of the event including security, parking, beach launch help, boat washing, lunch, awards, etc. Dee thanked our PROs PC Gina Bowden-Pierce on the Pram/Opti course and Windlass Margo Currey on the Sunfish course. On Monday, the day before the event, many of the competitors participated in a practice race (with wind), and then enjoyed a pre-race celebration at Three Daughters Brewing
