On Mondays we hold an assembly for Years 1-3. This Monday I explored the value of friendship with the children. We all watched this short animation and then we acted it out in assembly. The Story of The Good Samaritan

We explored ‘what is a neighbour’? The children explained that everyone in our school community is a neighbour and all of us should look after each other even if we aren’t a close friend to that child. Furthermore, if any of the children observe that someone needs our help then we should stop and ask if they need help rather than walk past and carry on with our game. This could be asking if they want to join in a game or finding an adult to help.

The children had a wonderful time celebrating this festival, as you will see from the photographs in today’s newsletter.

There is an irony that we were celebrating the end of winter when it was snowing outside…!

This week we held our parents’ evenings remotely. I hope you found these to be helpful. Should you have any concerns following these meeting please do not hesitate to make an appointment with your child/ren’s class teacher or speak with either Mrs Clarke or myself.

week, and this year the focus is on connections. It will start with an assembly led by Miss Murray, our science lead. There have been many activities planned including a whole school project linked to STEAM and daily activities that will be sent home with your child/ren to do at home.

It has been another busy week at St Peter’s 2-8 with so many things happening. On Wednesday the Reception and Nursery children celebrated the festival of ‘Holi’. Holi is also known as the Festival of Colours, it's OK to get a little messy while celebrating this festival in India.

Bright neon powder covers revellers in northern India during the annual Hindu celebration called Holi, usually held in March. Holi is celebrated on the last full moon in the lunar month of Phalguna. This ancient tradition marks the end of winter and honours the triumph of good over evil.

Next week is STEAM week at Peter's 2-8 where we will be celebrating all things Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths to link in with British Science Week. This year the theme is Connections. Our STEAM week will start with an assembly on Monday with Mrs Miller, the Science coordinator at 8-13. Throughout the week we will be completing lots of different investigative tasks in our respective year groups and the whole school will be taking part in a special project. With the inclusion of Art this year we have decided to give our project an art focus. Over the course of the week the children will work on creating their own dioramas using a variety of skills and knowledge they have gained in Science, Computing, DT, Art and Maths in order to create an end product. These will be on display for you to see in the Atrium next Friday morning. We will also be sending an (optional) task each day, linked to each of the five subjects for the children to complete at home. Look out for an email on Monday with your first task (for this task you will need flour, granulated golden sugar, salt and yeast). It should be an exciting week- we look forward to seeing all of your creations!

PS. Don't forget to send in your shoebox on Monday if you haven't already!

Amidst the cold weather of this week, Reception and Year 1 practiced their tennis skills in a slightly different way... using balloons. Both year groups had a lot of fun experimenting and exploring the flight of the balloon, practicing different types of shots. We were able to sustain rallies and play competitive matches over a net as the balloon allows for more time to prepare for our shot!

We also welcomed Mr. De Vries, Head of Tennis, into our lessons this week. It was fantastic to have an extra pair of hands, adding expertise, to the children's tennis. we look forward to working with Mr. De Vries throughout term!

MUSIC

When we were at Young Voices, a recording was made of the children singing ‘Proud’ with Heather Small which has been made into a charity single. The proceeds will go to Place2Be, the children's mental health charity. The download costs £1. Please find the link below:

Acorns

It has been wonderful to see the snow this week.!

The Acorns were able to dress appropriately, run about and about enjoy the coldness and experience the ice falling and landing. We were also able to make the most of a cold but beautiful morning at Forest school. We packed the biscuits and hot chocolate and made our way down to the forest. We did the obligatory running race across the field, which has now become a tradition, and then scampered into the forest to explore and play.

Our book for the week has been, The Tiger Who Came To Tea, and so the children have had lots of fun in the water tray making lots of cups of tea. They are becoming experts, so do ask them if you would like your own cup of tea brewed! We have made tigers and cup-cakes out of play dough.

The children are enjoying experimenting with some paint and have created some adorable looking teddy bears. It has been another wonderful week in Acorns.

Conkers

This week in the far away land of Conkers there has been a burst of colour, whilst celebrating Holi; a buzz of creativity in the messy area building junk models and a hive of storytelling as the children performed their favourite traditional tales.

Reception

This week has been one full of excitement and colour in Reception as we have been learning all about the Hindu Festival of Colour. We have been helped by two very special teachers, Siri and her mummy! Siri has been explaining to us how she likes to celebrate it with her family, helping us with some tricky name pronunciations and baking colourful biscuits for us. Yum!

In class we have been making Rangoli patterns, smelling spices, tasting poppadoms and samosas and making yellow paint from Turmeric which is a symbol of good health and good luck. Then on Wednesday we had our day of celebration that we had all been waiting for. Despite Holi being a festival to welcome in the spring, we began the day with flurries of snow! Undeterred, with a few slight plan changes, our Holi party went ahead.

We had large scale art and painting and Bollywood dancing led by Siri’s mummy, which we all loved. Then our grand finale was the paint throwing. Dressed in goggles and waterproofs we collected our colourful powder and had great fun covering each other in it. What a fabulous end to a wonderful day. A special thank you to Siri and her mummy.

Happy Holi!

We have had a WONDERFUL week in Year 1 and have continued to enjoy the 1990's!

We have been doing graffiti art and learning about the artist Banksy, exploring sound through vibration, and have continued to love making books about our favourite pop stars! The children's bubble writing is awesome. I wonder if they can teach you at home?

The children are also really enjoying working independently in provision, using the new skills they have learnt, to make Pic Collage posters - I am sure you have enjoyed seeing these at home too!

Thank you for all the shoeboxes so far, we are super excited for STEAM week next week and making our sparkling disco dioramas.

Maybe you could start thinking of your plan at home ready for next week, will you be re-creating the Cavern Club or an amazing colourful stage for Abba - the possibilities are endless!

We have also been practising our musical medley with Mrs Hayden. The teachers went to a live performance in their music lesson this week and it was AMAZING! We are ready to perform in the recording studio on Monday afternoon and we are super excited to become real life pop stars.

In Literacy this week we have been exploring common nouns and proper nouns, the children have been fantastic and have enjoyed writing on the tables to categorise the different nouns and add capital letters.

Next week is going to be another exciting week and we can't wait!

As the Polar Bear Explorers finally approach their destination, Stella is astounded to see a yeti for the first time! This led to lots of wonderful discussion about what it would be like to see a real life yeti, the magnitude of these creatures and whether they are just a myth. We looked at the first alleged photograph of a yeti and some peculiar footprints, taken in 1951 on a Mount Everest expedition. We discussed how this amplified the legend of the yeti and led to numerous more expeditions in hunt of these creatures. We also discussed the debate around this creature and looked at different viewpoints.

The children drew upon the inspiration from this chapter in our key text to produce some detailed descriptive writing on the appearance and features of a yeti, using exciting adjectives and interest verbs.

In art, Year 2 used soft pastels to create beautiful pictures of the Northern Lights. We enjoyed using a less familiar medium and learning more about these beautiful auroras.

The children have really impressed us with their telling the time skills again this week! We have been extending our learning further, looking at quarter past and quarter to, telling the time to five minutes and representing this as digital and analogue times.

YEAR 3

Our learning journey has taken us to the incredible country of Mexico this week!

We enjoyed exploring the ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza and the fascinating Kukulcan pyramid (also known as El Castillo). We discovered that the pyramid has 365 steps leading up to a temple and was dedicated to the Mayan snake god, Kakulkan.

After learning that Chichen Itza became one of the Seven New Wonders of the World in 2007, we were interested to find out more about the other 6 New Wonders of the World. This led us to create an information page to teach others about these amazing man-made buildings around the world.

To celebrate International Women’s Day on Thursday, we learnt about the talented and inspiring Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. We used her painting ‘The Frame’ to inspire our own self-portrait and enjoyed using watercolours and oil pastels to create our own masterpieces!
