What a fabulous first week back we have had in Year 1! We have thoroughly enjoyed immersing ourselves in our new topic; Who Do You Think You Are?
This week we have learnt all about an inspirational person called Emmanuel Yeboah, who cycled 400 hundred miles around Ghana with just one leg. We have been studying maps of Ghana and designing and building our own bike tracks using distance place holders in miles. We have loved learning about cubism art this week and making our own cubist bike art! We carefully designed a representation of a bike using different 2D shapes, before mixing different shades of the same colour to carefully shade each shape.
We have made the most of the sunny afternoons and opened our very own bike workshop in the Year 1 outdoor area. In this area we have been learning about the different bike parts and how to dismantle and rebuild bikes with a range of tools.
The highlight of our week has definitely been performing in our class assemblies and showcasing all the wonderful learning from last term. We hope you loved our performances as much as we did!
It’s hard to believe that we have only been back at school for 1 week! The children were very excited on Monday morning to return to French themed classrooms!
We have written postcards from Libby about her first day in Paris and in art we have drawn oil pastel copies of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers.
We have started to read our new text, a mystery called ‘Libby and the Parisian Puzzle’ which is part of the Travelling School series. We are planning to ‘travel’ further but are currently immersed in all things French and Parisian.
Monday started brilliantly with a French lesson from Mr Draper. He taught the children phrases to use in our café role play area and they also learnt about the different famous landmarks in Paris. The café is also helping us to learn about money (British money!) as we are buying croissants, working out the change and writing receipts!
On Wednesday, 2H were the first class to visit the Honeysuckle Singers, a small drop in choir in York. We went as part of our work with the charity Musical Connections and sang songs with our new friends, as well as singing to them. The children greatly enjoyed this session and it was lovely to see them being so warm and open with the group. Mrs Franey and I were very proud of them.
I wonder what excitement next week will bring?!
