The success for the team continued as it made the move to the NCAA Division-III in 2006, as the Lady Bearcats have gone a combined 40-11 in each of the past two seasons, and captured the 2010 ECAC South Division III championship. A native of Mount Pleasant, PA, Zawacki was a former high school All-American, and is a 1980 graduate of Penn State University, where she earned the Varsity “S” award for her contributions to the school’s athletic program. In addition to her 27-year tenure as head women’s basketball coach at Saint Vincent, Zawacki serves as the school’s Associate Athletic Director and Senior Women’s Administrator, and was the head coach of the Lady Bearcat softball team from 1985-89, and again from 1996-2007.

assistant Coach Jimmy Petruska In July of 2007, Jimmy Petruska became the first full-time assistant women's basketball coach in the history of the Lady Bearcat program. A 2004 graduate of Saint Vincent College, Petruska served as a graduate assistant for the Lady Bearcats during the 2006-07 season. Prior to his return to Saint Vincent, he served as an assistant coach in the high school ranks since 2002. He began as an assistant at Mars High School, north of Pittsburgh, under his mother, head coach Dana Petruska. His main responsibilities included scouting and breaking down film. He left Mars in 2005, and coached for one season at neighboring Pine Richland High School, mainly scouting opponents, while he also spent four years coaching at the AAU level. In addition to his role with the basketball team, Petruska also serves as assistant coach of the Lady Bearcat field hockey team, as well as gameday manager for Bearcat football at Chuck Noll Field. A native of Mars, PA, he currently resides in Latrobe.
assistant Coach Mark Hozak The longest tenured member of Coach Zawacki’s staff, Mark Hozak enters his 15th season as an assistant for the Lady Bearcats. A native of Uniontown, PA and graduate of Uniontown High School, Hozak was a prolific two-sport athlete at Waynesburg University, starting for four seasons in both baseball and basketball. On the hardwood, he scored over 1,000 career points for the Yellow Jackets before graduating in 1980 with a degree in Finance. Hozak and his wife Sue, the Lady Bearcat volleyball head coach, reside in Mount Pleasant, PA. Their oldest daughter Kristin is a 2007 graduate of Saint Vincent, and currently serves as head coach of the Chatham University volleyball team. Their youngest daughter Natalie is currently a senior at Saint Vincent, and was a 2010 First Team All-PAC volleyball pick.
assistant Coach ashley Campbell After starring on the court for the Bearcats from 2006-09, Ashley Campbell returned to Saint Vincent as a volunteer assistant coach beginning in the 2009-10 season. In addition with recruiting and breakdown of game film, Ashley plays a big role in the team’s strength and conditioning workouts throughout the season. A native of Donora, PA and graduate of Ringgold High School, Campbell was one of the top point guards to ever play for the Bearcats. She culminated a strong career with her senior season of 2008-09, as she led the Presidents’ Athletic Conference in both assists per game (5.1) and steals (97), while averaging 8.5 points and 4.5 rebounds.

2010-11 Preview The Saint Vincent women’s basketball team hopes that its makes its first season as an official NCAA Division-III member a memorable one. Coming off of a 23-5 season, and winning the championship of the ECAC South Region, the Lady Bearcats begin the season ranked 25th nationally by d3hoops.com. With all five starters and eight players returning in all, the Lady Bearcats were also picked in a preseason poll to finish second in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. Head coach Kristen Zawacki, in her 27th year at the helm with a career record of 503275, is thrilled to have a chance to compete for a PAC and NCAA title, but knows that her team can not dwell on its success from a season ago. “We’re excited to be able to play for something and to officially be part of the PAC,” she said. “Granted, last year was a great season, being able to compete in the ECAC tournament, but that’s no guarantee as to how this season is going to go.” Two four-year members of the team highlight the returnees, in senior guards Maria Baroffio (below) and Kathy Bianco. Baroffio was the team’s leading scorer last season, finishing third in the PAC with an
average of 14.5 points per game and fifth in the league with 47 three-point field goals. Bianco started all 28 games at the point, finishing fifth in the conference with an average of 2.68 assists, while placing second in the PAC with 68 steals. “Both of our seniors were significant starters last season,” Zawacki said, “and they should start again this year. Maria will play both the two and three spot, while we’re looking for Kathy to really be our general out there at the point.” A third guard in the mix to see significant time is junior Emily Fenton. She flourished as the team’s ‘sixth man’ in each of the past two years, and Zawacki expects her to again be a big contributor. “Emily is our most versatile guard,” said Zawacki. “She can play the one, two, and three spots. She’s someone we really look to as a leader on the floor.” Last season, d Fenton averaged 9.0 points and 2.3 assists, knocking down 29 three-pointers and placing third in the PAC with an .827 free throw percentage. An all-conference selection as a freshman, Fenton also showed a knack for performing in the clutch, as she made the game clinching free throw with less than five seconds left for SVC in the ECAC title game. Another junior, forward Brittany Sedlock, evolved into one of the top power forwards in the league a season ago, capped off by earning the MVP honors in the ECAC championship game. On the year, she averaged 12.1 points, and finished third in the PAC in both rebounding (7.5) and field goal percentage (.502). She turned in 12 double-doubles, while placing fifth in the PAC in steals with 56, en-route to earning PAC all-conference Coaches Honors. “Brittany,” said Zawacki, “is another player we look to as a leader. She was the ECAC MVP last season, and showed that she can be one of the top scorers and rebounders in the conference. We’re extremely lucky to have her for another two years.”
2010-11 Preview
freshman, and led the team with 16 blocks. While so many experienced upperclassmen are back for the Lady Bearcats, Zawacki is also pleased with the team’s two freshmen, forward Ariel Rocco and guard Caty Kumar. The 5-9 Rocco brings strong bloodlines into the program, as she’s the cousin of Sedlock, and Zawacki sees a lot of similarities between the two. “You’ll be seeing a lot of Ariel,” said the coach. “She plays very much like her cousin. She’s very wiry, and is very much a competitor.” Kumar enjoyed a strong career at Riverview High School just north of Pittsburgh, and Zawacki is pleased with how the guard is adapting to the college game. “In practice,” Zawacki said, “Caty has really been coming on, and really getting a feel for our system, for the teammates, and the pace of the game.” While the Lady Bearcats seem to be loaded with experienced talent, the team to beat in the PAC remains three-time defending champion Thomas More, and Zawacki feels that it was no surprise that the Saints were picked to repeat in the conference’s pre-season poll. “I think Thomas More being picked first is absolutely the right call,” she said. “After that though, we’ll have to wait to see how this preseason poll holds up. This is an extremely competitive conference, and really anybody can beat anybody. Aside of someone beating Thomas More, I don’t think you can call any win by any of these teams an upset.”

Joining Sedlock underneath is sophomore Devin McGrath. McGrath took over the starting role at forward midway through last season, and it paid dividends, as she averaged 9.3 points and 6.1 rebounds. She was the team’s leading scorer in four different games, while she topped the team in rebounds in eight different contests. “Devin was a very good starter for us as a freshman last season,” Zawacki said. “We haven’t seen much of her lately, as she’s the starting setter on the volleyball team, and doing very well, but we’re anxious to get her back on the court for us full time.” Another sophomore tabbed a second-year starter is guard Melissa Mansur (pictured right). A shut-down defender, Mansur led the PAC, and placed among the top 10 nationally, with an average of 3.21 steals per game. She also showcased some offensive skills as she averaged 8.3 points with 27 three-point field goals. “Mansur is our best defensive player,” said Zawacki, “and she’s pretty versatile, equally adept at both the two and three spot. We’re expecting a lot out of her again this season.” The Lady Bearcats will also welcome back a pair of sophomore post players in Megan DePrimio and Savannah Hardy. The 5-10 DePrimio bounced back from an early season knee injury to appear in the final 19 games of the year, averaging 4.9 points and 4.5 rebounds. Conversely, the 6-1 Hardy missed the final 20 games of the season due to a significant knee injury, but Zawacki is pleased with the progress of her rehabilitation. “Savannah is a young lady we didn’t get to see much of,” Zawacki said, “but she’s back for us. We’re bringing her along slowly, I’d say she’s at about 80 percent right now. We’re just trying to work her back into game speed, because she can be a force in the middle. Megan was a very solid contributor off the bench for us, and she’s very talented. We expect the same from her this year.” Another sophomore vying for time under the hoop is 6-0 sophomore Jordan Clinton. She appeared in 24 games off the bench as a

The PAC
BEARCAT BASKETBALL
Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Comprised of 10 select private colleges - Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University, and Westminster College - the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC expanded to seven members in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More College, formerly an NCAA Division III independent. Saint Vincent College, a former NAIA member, joined the conference as it began provisional membership status in NCAA Division III in 2006-07, and is now a full member of the NCAA. Another NAIA member, Geneva College, became the conference’s ninth member and began league play as it started Division III provisional membership in 2007-08. Chatham College became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007-08. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports. In 2009-10, the conference had 42 teams represent the conference in postseason play, including 23 in NCAA Championship events. PAC championship teams receive automatic qualification status for most NCAA Division III national championship events. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports. In 2009-10, the conference had 42 teams represent the conference in postseason play, including 23 in NCAA Championship events. PAC championship teams receive automatic qualification status for most NCAA Division III national championship events.All-conference status is awarded in all 19 sports. Head coaches select allleague squads for all team sports, while in individual sports, such as cross country and tennis, AllPAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships. The PAC annually awards its men’s and women’s All Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in PAC competition. The Grove City and Washington & Jefferson men tied for the top spot in the 2009-10 year, while the Westminster women captured the women’s All-Sports Trophy. True to its mission, the PAC has produced numerous Academic All-Americans and NCAA Postgrduate Scholarship winners. Last year, the league named over 600 studentathletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating student-athletes who attain a grade-point average of 3.60 or above.
