COACHING STAFF

HEAD COACH BOB COLBERT

Bob Colbert came to Saint Vincent in 2006 to bring back football after a 45-year hiatus. He built the program from the ground up, hiring a staff and recruiting players from all over the country to come to Western Pennsylvania to get in on the ground floor of a program rich in history, yet brand new.

A native of Pittsburgh’s North Side, Colbert is entering his 42nd season as a coach, and has been involved with the game of football as a player and coach for 54 years. A graduate of North Catholic High School, where he starred in both baseball and football, he attended the University of Maryland, where he played defensive back and earned a Bachelors of Science degree in 1971. In 1970, he became the head coach at Gallaudet University, the only liberal arts college in the world for the hearing impaired. Just 23 at the time, he was the youngest head coach in the United States, and posted a record of 3-4 in his first season, the most wins for the school in over 30 years. He then went onto serve as defensive backs coach at Colgate University from 1972-75, also serving as baseball coach from ‘74-76, before moving to the National Football League as an assistant to the defensive staff with the Washington Redskins, under legendary coach George Allen (1976), and administrative assistant to the Baltimore Colts (1977-79) under head coach Ted Marchibroda. He returned to college coaching in 1980, spending three years at Ohio Wesleyan University as defensive coordinator and head baseball coach. From 1983-89, he was receivers coach and special teams coordinator at Cornell University, winning the 1988 Ivy League championship. He then picked up his second Ivy League title in 1990 as offensive line coach at Dartmouth. Colbert then moved onto Division I-AA James Madison as offensive coordinator for four years (1991-94), twice reaching the NCAA Quarterfinals. In 1996, he was named quarterbacks coach at another IAA school, UMass, and added offensive coordinator to his title in 1997.

From 1998-2005, Colbert was the offensive line coach, offensive coordinator, and associate head coach at Bridgewater College (VA), where the Eagles enjoyed five consecutive titles in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Bridgewater competed in the NCAA Division-III national playoffs for six straight seasons from 2000-05. In 2001, the Eagles played Mount Union College in the Stagg Bowl for the Division-III National Championship. Colbert received the AFLAC National Assistant of the Year for his work at Bridgewater in 2002. The Eagles went 64-11 during his final six years in Virginia, averaging 5,473 yards per year, 443 yards per game, and 38 points per game.

In December 2006, Colbert was named head coach of the re-born Saint Vincent football program, as the school resurrected the sport after a 45-year hiatus. Using the 2006-07 year to acclimate his team to the rigors of collegiate football, the Bearcats played their first official varsity game on September 1, 2007, against Colbert’s old employer, Gallaudet University. One year later, the re-born Bearcats collected their first ever win, again over Gallaudet, and the team has shown steady improvement since. In 2010, the Bearcats went 3-7, the team’s most win in a single season since 1961, including a 3-4 mark in PAC play. Six of the team’s seven losses came by 10 or fewer points, as the Bearcats outscored their conference foes a combined 162-157 in the seven league games. Colbert oversaw an offense that ranked fourth in the league averaging 363.4 yards per game, while the Bearcat passing game, led by All-Conference quarterback Aaron Smetanka, finished second in the PAC in both yards per game (236.5) and pass efficiency (142.6). In all, the Bearcats saw 11 players named All-Conference in 2010, while the team also turned in an excellent performance in the classroom. Fourteen Bearcat players were named to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which honors athletes who achieve a 3.6 gradepoint average during their season of competition. Colbert and his wife of 38 years, Christine, reside in Unity Township, and have two children. Their daughter Cara Colbert Hopson resides in Harrisonburg, VA, and gave birth to the Colbert’s first gradnson, Tyler, in May 2010. Their son Bret resides in Greensburg, and serves as offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator for the Bearcats.

COACHING STAFF SHAWN ROHRER - Defensive Coordinator

Shawn Rohrer enters his fourth year on the Bearcat staff as the team’s defensive coordinator, and over the past three seasons, the Bearcat defense has seen marked improvement. In 2010, the team ranked fifth in the nineteam Presidents’ Athletic Conference in scoring defense (23.2 pts/g), total defense (356.0 yds/gm), and pass defense (208.0 yds/gm), while the team’s run defense surrendered just 3.7 yards per carry. Six Bearcat defenders were named All-PAC, led by the linebacker duo of Anthony Johnson and Armando Fortunato, who finished second and fourth in the PAC in tackles, respectively, with 102 and 95.

Prior to joining the Bearcats, Rorhrer served his second stint at Division-II powerhouse California University (PA) as Director of Football Operations and Recruiting Coordinator, along with coaching linebackers through the 2006 PSAC Co-Championship season. In 1998-99, he worked as a graduate assistant at Cal, obtaining a Masters Degree in Geography and Regional Planning. A 1998 graduate of Slippery Rock, Rorhrer was named All-America at linebacker, serving as team captain for The Rock in 1997. That season, he helped lead the team to the PSAC title and first ever appearance in the national playoffs.

Rorher served as Linebackers Coach at his alma mater from 2000-02. In 2000, SRU was again the PSAC champion and a national playoff team. In 2002, he was hired at Shepherd University as Defensive Line coach and Recruiting Coordinator, before transitioning to Linebackers Coach in 2003, helping the team to the WVIAC championship. In 2005, he added Special Teams Coordinator to his responsibilities, and enjoyed another WVIAC title, while taking part in a perfect 11-0 regular season and national playoff berth, as the team’s defense ranked nationally in every major defensive statistic. A native of New Bethlehem, PA and graduate of Beth-Center High School, Shawn and his wife Kim reside in New Stanton, with their daughter Savanah.

BRET COLBERT - Offensive Coordinator

The 2011 season marks the fifth on the Bearcat coaching staff for Bret Colbert. After spending the previous four seasons as the team’s wide receiver’s coach, Bret was named offensive coordinator in May 2011, while he also serves as video coordinator and recruiting coordinator. During his stint as the Bearcat wide receiver’s coach, Colbert’s pupils proved extremely productive. 2011 graduate Sheldon Loughner finised his career as the school’s all-time record holder in nearly every major receiving statistic, including career receptions (76), yards (1,239), and touchdowns (16). A First Team All-PAC selection in 2010, Loughner also was selected to participate in the 2010 Division II/III All-America Bowl in Minnesota. Loughner’s classmate, Tom Quirin, was a Second Team AllPAC pick in 2010, finishing second in the PAC with a team-leading 46 receptions.

Colbert came to Saint Vincent from Cornell University, where he spent the 2005 and ‘06 seasons as an offensive and special teams assistant. He began his collegiate coaching career under Walt Harris at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a graduate assistant, specializing in video, in 2004 and ‘05. He has also worked numerous summer camps and clinics over the course of his coaching career, including ones held at Penn State, Pitt, Cornell, and James Madison.

A native of Harrisonburg, VA, Colbert graduated from Turner Ashby High School. He began his playing career at Division I-AA William and Mary, where he spent two seasons at wide receiver. He then played two seasons at Bridgewater College in Virginia, where he graduated with a degree in Health and Exercise Science. On the football field, he helped the Eagles to a 23-3 record and two appearances in the NCAA national playoffs. Bret, the son of Bearcat head coach Bob Colbert, currently resides in Greensburg with wife Allison, whom he married in June 2011.

COACHING STAFF BERNIE COLBERT - Offensive Line Coach

Bernie Colbert enters his fifth season as the Bearcats’ offensive line coach. Thanks to his men in the trenches, the Bearcat offense has continually improved throughout the past four years. In 2010, the Bearcat offense ranked fifth in the PAC in both scoring and total offense, and Colbert saw two of his pupils - center Shane Smith and guard Taofik Amokomowo - earn All-PAC accolades.

A native of Pittsburgh, PA, Colbert has coached all facets of the game - offense, defense, and special teams. After graduating from Pittsburgh’s North Catholic High School, Colbert went on to play collegiately at North Carolina State University. After his career was derailed due to injury, he joined the NC State coaching staff as a student assistant. He has previously coached collegiately at Carnegie Mellon University, serving as the team’s defensive line coach. He also served as offensive coordinator at the high school ranks at North Catholic and The Kiski School in Saltsburg, PA.

JOHN BELL - Defensive Line Coach

John Bell enters his fifth season with the Bearcat coaching staff, serving as both defensive line coach as well as strength and conditioning coordinator for all 20 of Saint Vincent’s varsity sports programs. A resident of Pittsburgh, Bell has seen his defensive line blossom into one of the top defensive fronts in the PAC. A pair of 2011 graduates - John Jackson and Jeff Graham - were each two-time All-PAC selections, ending their careers sharing the team’s all-time lead in career sacks. In 2010, Graham set a modern-day record with 5.0 sacks, while he graduated second in program history in career tackles, with 278. Jackson ended his career with 28.0 tackles for loss, also second most in team history. Bell began his coaching career at Slippery Rock in 1993, coaching linebackers, running backs, and special teams, through the 1998 season. From 1998-2000, he worked as defensive and special teams coordinator at Hampton High School, in the northenr suburbs of Pittsburgh. He then moved onto Lock Haven University, spending the 200 and 2001 seasons as defensive line coach, before being named defensive coordinator at St. Joseph’s College in Indiana. In 2004, he returnedto Lock Haven, coaching tackles and tight ends, before rejoining the Slippery Rock staff in 2005 as wide receivers and special teams coach. A native of Erie, PA, Bell is a certified sports performance coach by USA Weightlifting, and has been a competitive power lifter.

JOHN THOMPSON - Defensive Backs Coach

The 2011 season marks the first for John Thompson, as the coaching veteran will serve as the Bearcats’ defensive backs coach. He brings 15 years of coaching experience with him to Latrobe, most recently serving as defensive coordinator at Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA. He joined Mercyhurst’s staff in 2007 as defensive backs coach, and continued to manage the d-backs in addition to his promotion to defensive coordinator in 2008. In 2010, Mercyhurst won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, and made its first ever NCAA Division-II national playoff appearance, thanks to Thompson’s defense, which surrendered an average of just 286 yards per game, and allowed fewer than 14 points in seven different contests. Five Laker defenders were named All-PSAC, including PSAC Defensive Player of the Year, linebacker Brian Boyce. Prior to his tenure at Mercyhurst, Thompson coached at a trio of NCAA Division-I schools. From 2000-01, he was special teams coordinator at Sacred Heart University, before being elevated to defensive coordinator from 2002-06. He spent the 1998 and ‘99 seasons on the staff at Saint Francis (PA), after spending two years (1996-97) on the coaching staff at his alma mater, Marist College. John resides in Greensburg with his wife Sarah, a 2004 Saint Vincent graduate.

THE P.A.C. Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and academic excellence. Comprised of 10 select, private colleges - Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University, and Westminster College - the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC expanded to seven members in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More College, formerly and NCAA Division-III Independent. Saint Vincent College, a former NAIA member, joined the conference as it begain provisional membership status in NCAA Division-III in 200607, and is now a full-fledged member of the NCAA. Another NAIA member, Geneva College, became the conference’s ninth member and began league play as it started Division-III provisional membership in 2007-08. Chatham University became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007-08. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports. PAC championship teams receive automatic qualification status for most NCAA Division-III national championship events. All-conference status is awarded in all 19 sports. Head coaches select all-league squads for team sports, while in individual sports, such as cross-country and tennis, All-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships. The PAC annually awards its men’s and women’s AllSports Trophies to the scools which perform best across the board in PAC competition. In the 2009-10 academic year, the Washington & Jefferson men and Grove City women were awarded the All-Sports Trophy. True to its mission, the PAC has produced numerous Academic All-Americans and NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Last year, the league named over 600 student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes participating athletes who attain a grade-point average of 3.60 or above during their season of competition.

TEAM HISTORY Ever since one of the first documented professional football games in history took place on a field less than a mile from campus in the late 1800s, the Latrobe, PA area has played a big role in football-crazy Western Pennsylvania. Saint Vincent College fielded its first varsity football squad in 1923, and immediately cemented a solid tradition. Though the sport was discontinued at the school in 1962,

Saint Vincent still remained in the football forefront, as the school has played host to summer training camp for the six-time Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers for over 40 years. The football program at Saint Vincent was resurrected in 2006, and the current Bearcats are set on continuing the long, storied tradition of Saint Vincent Bearcat football.

1923 Fans were baffled in the Bearcats’ Nov. 3rd finale against Duquesne when Saint Vincent players formed a circle behind the line of scrimmage before running the next play. This act, known as the huddle, was the brainchild of Saint Vincent head coach Marion Cleary, and was the first huddle system introduced in the Tri-State District.

1927 A September game between Saint Vincent and Saint Francis turns into an all-day football extravaganza when referees forgot to keep an official clock. The 2pm game was eventually called to darkness, with Saint Francis winning 19-0. In a November game against George Washington, Bearcat singall callers established a record that still stands today, completing 30 of 34 passes.

1929 In a 40-0 win over Edinboro, Sammy Lucker gained 501 yards from scrimmage, scoring two touchdowns.

1931 Harry Johnson scores five touchdowns against Salem in his

most impressive performance, en-route to being Saint Vincent’s first ever football All-American. He officially received the nickname “Sticks” later on in the season after SVC’s 7-0 win over Canisius.

1934 In a meeting between Waynesburg and Saint Vincent, the Bearcats pulled out a nail-biting 14-6 win on a touchdown pass to Joe Pisula and a 44-yard run by Harry Johnson with seconds left in the fourth quarter. 1936

Bearcat Stadium opens on the part of campus that now houses the School of Science, Mathematics, and Computing. The distinct “Sauerkraut Tower,” which is still erected today, is located on the sideline behind the Bearcat bench.

1939 Joe Ratica, a 1939 SVC grad, becomes the first Bearcat football player to reach the National Football League. The center/guard played in eight games for Brooklyn as a rookie. 1943

40

Saint Vincent, like most small colleges across the country, cancels football prior to the 1943 season, due to the large number of students drafted into World War II.

TEAM HISTORY 1944

Three Saint Vincent graduates make their professional debuts in the NFL. Vern Foltz, a tackle, plays 10 games for the Washington Redskins. Johnny Popovich debuts as a running back and kick returner for Philadelphi, while Bap Manzini starts nine games at center for the Eagles.

1945 Another Saint Vincent alum, John Kondrla, makes his debut with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Later that season, Manzini is named an NFL All-Pro in his second professional season. 1946

Following the completion of World War II, football returns to Saint Vincent. Head coach Red Edwards steps down following the season, retiring with a record of 60-29-12. His winning percentage of .674 is still the best among ithe seven head coaches in the program’s history.

1948 After succeeding Edwards in the 1947 season as head coach of the Bearcats, Manzini returns to the NFL, signing with the Detroit Lions. Al DeLuca is named head coach, a position he will hold until football is disbanded in 1962. After retiring from the NFL in 1949, Manzini entered the high school coaching ranks, and amassed a record of 203-74-8. 1950

The Bearcats enjoy the most storied season in history, finishing 10-0 and opening the season with six straight shutouts. For the season, they outscored opponents 236-12. The season is culminated with a 7-6 win over Emory and Henry in the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando. Now known as the Citrus Bowl, it is the third longest running bowl game in college football.

1962 Citing costs, football is discontinued as a varsity program. Club football returns in 1968, and continues through the mid-70’s. 1967

The Pittsburgh Steelers move their summer training camp to Saint Vincent College, and the team has returned in each of the past 44 summers.

2005 Then-president Jim Will announces football will return to Saint Vincent, and the Bearcat athletic teams will move from the NAIA to the NCAA Division-III Presidents’ Athletic Conference. Bob Colbert is named football coach. 2007 On August 2nd, recently completed Chuck Noll Field is blessed and dedicated as the home of Bearcat football. Twenty-nine days later, football returns to Saint Vincent, as the Bearcats host Gallaudet University in front of an overflow crowd at Chuck Noll Field.

CHUCK NOLL FIELD Blessed and dedicated on August 2, 2007, Chuck Noll Field is the home of Bearcat football. Named after former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Chuck Noll, who won four Super Bowls and is enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the field also serves as the main practice field for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have called Saint Vincent their summer training camp home since 1967. Located at the base of the Saint Vincent campus, Chuck Noll Field has a natural grass playing surface with a state-of-the-art drainage system. The stadum has a seating capacity of 1,100, while the adjacent hillsides also serve as a perfect vantage point on fall afternoons.

52

The approach to Chuck Noll Field features an eight-foot wide paved walkway leading from the parking area on Saint Vincent Drive to the entrance plaza, where fans have access to concessions and restrooms.

An 18’ x 35’ two-story brick and glass press box provides ample accomodations for working media, sports information personnel, coaches, and support staff, as well as full broadcast video capabilities and a state-of-the-art sound system. Designed to permit expansion at a later date, Chuck Noll Field has also played host to Bearcat lacrosse and soccer.

Saint Vincent College student-athletes have the privelege of utilizing some of the finest facilities in small-college athletics in the region. The Robert S. Carey Student Center, dedicated in 2003, is the hub of Bearcat athletics, and it serves the need of every student-athlete at the college. The gymnasium, with a seating capacity of 1,300, features regulation basketball and volleyball courts, and is also used for practice by the baseball, softball, lacrosse, and soccer teams. In addition to the full-sized basketball court, there are five additional practice courts that are used recreationally by students, and for intramural competition. Downstairs from the gymansium, the Carey Center houses 15 full-sized locker rooms for year-round use by Bearcat varsity teams and their visitors, while the Carey Fitness Center is equipped with a wide array of free weights, weight machines, treadmills, exercise bikes, and elliptical machines. Across from the fitness center is the Athletic Training Center, one of the most modern and spacious facilities in small-college athletics that state-of-the-art equipment for injury treatment and rehabilitation. The Frank and Elizabeth Resnik Pool is located in the back of the Carey Center, and is the home of the Bearcat men’s and women’s swimming teams. A number of Bearcat varsity teams use the pool for conditioning workouts, while it is open to the entire Saint Vincent community for recreational swimming.

Upon entering campus, the Saint Vincent softball field, built in 2004, is immediately visible, and has undergone constant upgrades over the past six years, as it includes a fully-enclosed fence, a full-sized electronic scoreboard, and a tarp. Adjacent to the softball field is the Saint Vincent Turf, the newest facility on campus. Equipped with a modern FieldTurf surface, which enables safe play in nearly all weather conditions, the Saint Vincent Turf is home to the men’s and women’s soccer teams, field hockey team, and women’s lacrosse.

Behind the softball field stands Chuck Noll Field, the home of Bearcat football in the fall, men’s lacrosse in the spring, and the Pittsburgh Steelers in the summer, as the six-time World Champions have utilized the 1,100-seat, natural grass field every summer since 1967 as the site of their annual training camp. In the middle of campus stands Bearcat Ballfield, the home of Saint Vincent baseball. One of the deepest parks in Division-III baseball, Bearcat Ballfield offers spacious dugouts, a fully-enclosing fence, electronic scoreboard, outdoor batting cage, and a press box equipped for internet, radio, and television broadcasting.

The outdoor tennis courts, completely resurfaced in 2007 and used by the Lady Bearcat tennis team, sit on the upper part of campus, offering a picturesque view of the entire college and the surrounding mountains and scenery.
