COACHING STAFF
Head Coach Sue Hozak
The lone head coach in Saint Vincent volleyball history, Sue Hozak has led the team from its inception in 1985. As a coach - and educator - Sue believes in educating and guiding students by providing a positive environment for excelleing academically, athletically, and socially to maximize their potential as valuable members of society. And it works. A 1983 graduate of Waynesburg College, Hozak received a Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration. She was a three-time All-District setter for the Yellow Jackets, winning three district championships and competing in three NAIA National Championship tournaments. A native of North Huntingdon, PA, Hozak graduated from Norwin High School, where she was a setter on three straight state championship teams.
At Saint Vincent, in addition to her role with thevolleyball team, Hozak is also the Assistant Athletic Director, and is in charge of compliance and eligibility for all 20 varsity teams at SVC. While at Saint Vincent, Hozak’s team have enjoyed a great deal of success, as she enters the 2010 season with an overall career record of 486-335. Her personal honors include; 2003 American Mideast Conference Coach of the Year; 1994 AVCA/NAIA Northeast Coach of the Year; 1994 Keystone-Empire Conference Coach of the Year,; and 1990, ‘92, and ‘92 NAIA District 18 Coach of the Year.
In 1994, the Lady Bearcats won the NAIA regional title and advanced to the NAIA National Championships, while her team is currently in the midst of arguably its best run in program history.
After reaching the NAIA Region IX championship in 2005, the Lady Bearcats won the 2006 and 2007 ECAC Division-II championships. In 2006, the team won a school-record 29 matches, and ended the year by winning 50 consecutive sets.
The Lady Bearcats also qualified for the ECAC DivisionII south playoffs in 2009, advancing to the semifinals. Overall, dating back to the 2004 campaign, the Lady Bearcats have gone an impressive 130-37.
Sue and her husband Mark, who serves as assistant women’s basketball coach at Saint Vincent, currently reside in Mount Pleasant, PA. The Hozaks have two daughters, Kristin and Natalie. Kristin, who is a 2008 graduate of Saint Vincent, was a four-year starting setter and threeyear all-conference player for the Lady Bearcats, and was recently hired as head coach at Chatham University. Natalie is currently a junior Communication major at Saint Vincent, and is a two-year starter at outside hitter for the Lady Bearcats.
Assistant Coach Scott Wisneski Scott Wisneski enters his fifth season as the Lady Bearcats’ assistant coach. He has helped Coach Hozak and the Lady Bearcats enjoy arguably the finest stretch in team history, as the squad is 101-31 during his tenure.
A native of Derry, PA, Scott was a four-year letterwinner at perennial powerhouse Derry Area High School. He was a member of the team from 1986-89, during which time the Trojans won two PIAA state titals and once finished as the PIAA runners-up. In addition to his role at Saint Vincent, Scott also serves as
an assistant coach with the Greater Latrobe High School boys program, and also coaches the Junior Olympic team for the Foothills Club. At Saint Vincent, Scott also works as a supervisor at the control desk of the school’s Fitness Center.

2010 PREVIEW
With seven players returning from a 2009 team that went 23-11, the Saint Vincent volleyball team looks to continue its most successful run in program history. After successfully completing a four-year provisional period, the Lady Bearcats are now fully eligible for the PAC and NCAA post-season, and while it’s still early in the preseason, head coach Sue Hozak believes her team has what it takes to make a successful post-season run. “We’re glad that we’re finally eligible for the PAC playoffs,” Hozak said. “With the success we’ve had in recent years, with the talented returnees coming back, and with a deep freshman class, I’d like to think we have a legitimate shot at going deep into the postseason.” Since joining the PAC as a provisional member for the 2006 season, the Lady Bearcats have amassed an overall record of 106-26, winning the ECAC Division-II championship in both 2006 and 2007, while going 57-12 against PAC foes in that span. With 100 percent of its offensive output returning from a season ago, and 67 percent of its defense, the team looks to continue to pile up the wins in the new campaign. Leading the returnees is the senior trio of frontline players Diana Petrovich, Rachel Pace, and Natalie Hozak. In 2009, the 6-1 Petrovich led Saint Vincent, and placed in the top five in the PAC, in both kills/set (2.9) and hitting percentage (.303), posting at least 10 kills in 23 of SVC’s 32 matches, including four 20-plus kill performances. Natalie Hozak has blossomed into one of the premier two-way players in the conference, as she bounced back from missing the entire 2008 campaign due to injury by averaging a team-high 4.52 digs (fifth in the PAC) and 2.45 kills. Her total of 571 digs is the second most in a single-season in team history, while she also led Saint Vincent with 44 service aces. An explosive leaper, Pace has been a full-time starter in each of the past two seasons. Last year, she led the Lady Bearcats, and placed third in the conference, with 114 blocks, while also totaling 150 kills. 2
“I couldn’t be more pleased with the senior leadership,” said Coach Hozak. Diana, Rachel, and Natalie have all been with us for three years, and they’ve been really significant contributors. Diana could be one of the top outside hitters in the conference, and I was extremely pleased with how Natalie came back from her injury. Rachel is an intense competitor, and her leaping ability has helped put her among the top blockers in the PAC. “I couldn’t ask for any more from them. With those three being the team leaders, our girls are in good hands.” A pair of juniors, outside hitter Taylor Guido and middle hitter Dawn Timko, should also continue to be mainstays for the Lady Bearcats. Both Guido and Timko joined Petrovich and Hozak as PAC Coaches Honors recipients a season ago. Guido has started every match of her career, and last season, she averaged 2.52 kills and 2.98 digs. She had at least 10 kills in 16 matches, while posting double digits in digs 20 times. After seeing her role continually increase throughout her freshman campaign of 2008, Timko burst onto the scene as a sophomore a season ago. She started 29 matches, and averaged 1.59 kills to go with a total of 111 blocks, fourth most in the PAC. “It’s been fun seeing the strides that Taylor and

Dawn have made over the past two years,” said Coach Hozak. “They’re both excellent athletes. Taylor may be a bit undersized, but her leaping ability keeps opponents on their toes. Dawn has been a model of consistency for us in the middle. We’re expecting big things from both of them.” A sixth returnee up front is junior middle hitter Ashlee Cowles. After seeing limited playing time throughout the 2009 regular season, the 6-0 Cowles was thrust into a starting spot in the ECAC playoffs after injuries to Timko and Natalie Hozak. Cowles responded by tallying 10 blocks and nine kills in the two ECAC matches, and looks to continue to see her role increase in her third year on the team. Sophomore Devin McGrath is slated to be the team’s setter for a second straight season. An allstate middle hitter throughout her high school career, McGrath moved to the setter spot a season ago, and made a seamless transition to the new position. “We asked a lot from Devin last season,” said Coach Hozak, “and she really responded. For a player to perform the way she did after never setting in her career really says a lot about her athletic ability. I’m totally confident in her running our offense.” After splitting time at the position in the first half of the season, McGrath seized the starting job and finished the season by finishing fifth in the PAC with an average of 8.68 assists, dishing out at least 40 helpers 13 different times. Another excellent all-around player, McGrath also averaged 3.11 digs per set and 1.28 kills, while finishing third on the team with 28 service aces. The lone position in which the Lady Bearcats lack a returning starter is at defensive specialist, with the graduation of three-year starter Christa Calgaro, who averaged over four digs per set for her career. Hozak’s deep recruiting class, however, has produced a number of candidates vying for the libero spot, as five newcomers have extensive experience at the position, including Savannah Arbuckle, Kaley Burkardt, Adrianna Zoscak, Laura Marino, and Megan Lucas.
Devin Devin McGrath McGrath “After losing our defensive specialists from last year,” Hozak said, “I’m really pleased we were able to bring in so many quality players at that position in this class. There’s been a battle in camp between these freshman for a starting spot.” While this year’s recruiting class has produced a number of quality defensive players, there are also some talented newcomers who could see time up front, including Brittany Hauser, Emily Rosati, Kayla Stadleman, Allison Cramer, and Genna DeVivo. Burkardt, who was an All-WPIAL pick at in her high school days at Greater Latrobe, may also see some time up front in addition to on the back line. “It’s a really deep class,” Coach Hozak said of her newcomers. “There is a lot of high-caliber experience and a lot of championship experience with this group.” The Lady Bearcats will begin the 2010 season on Friday, Sept. 3rd, hosting eight other teams at the annual two-day Saint Vincent Bearcat Challenge tournament. SVC will face Carlow and Pitt-Bradford on the opening day of the tourney, before wrapping up the two-day event with matches against Pitt-Greensburg and Ursuline.

THE P.A.C.
THE PRESIDENTS’ ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Comprised of 10 select private colleges - Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University, and Westminster College - the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC expanded to seven members in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More College, formerly an NCAA Division III independent. Saint Vincent College, a former NAIA member, joined the conference as it began provisional membership status in NCAA Division III in 2006-07, and is now a full member of the NCAA. Another NAIA member, Geneva College, became the conference’s ninth member and began league play as it started Division III provisional membership in 2007-08. Chatham College became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007-08. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports. In 2009-10, the conference had 42 teams represent the conference in postseason play, including 23 in NCAA Championship events. PAC championship
teams receive automatic qualification status for most NCAA Division III national championship events. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports. In 2009-10, the conference had 42 teams represent the conference in postseason play, including 23 in NCAA Championship events. PAC championship teams receive automatic qualification status for most NCAA Division III national championship events.All-conference status is awarded in all 19 sports. Head coaches select all-league squads for all team sports, while in individual sports, such as cross country and tennis, All-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships. The PAC annually awards its men’s and women’s All Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in PAC competition. The Grove City and Washington & Jefferson men tied for the top spot in the 2009-10 year, while the Westminster women captured the women’s All-Sports Trophy. True to its mission, the PAC has produced numerous Academic All-Americans and NCAA Postgrduate Scholarship winners. Last year, the league named over 600 student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating student-athletes who attain a grade-point average of 3.60 or above.

The Carey Center
The Robert S. Carey Center is the home of Saint Vincent College Lady Bearcat volleyball. An extensive reconstruction project took place in 2003, including the addition of a new wing for athletic offices, new locker rooms, weight room, gym floor, seating, and moor. At that time, the new Robert S. Carey Student Center was christened, becoming one of the premier facilities in small-college athletics. The floor installed nearer to the front of the building has a resilient pad underneath, while a similar and seperate court was installed across the rear of the building that provies practice and playing areas for both varsity and intramural teams. Seating capacity in the Carey Center is 1,250, featuring both chair-back and bleacher seats.
Downstairs from the Carey Center gym, 14 full-sized locker rooms allow comfortable accomodations for both the Bearcats and visiting athletic teams. Also downstairs, the SVC Fitness Center is equipped with a full array of free weights and weight machines, along with exercise bikes, tradmills, steppers, and ellipticals. Another area that received a significant upgrade during the renovations of the Carey Center is the school’s Athletic Training Center. One of the more spacious training facilities in small-college athletics, the center offers Saint Vincent student-athletes ample space for treatment and rehabilatation of injuries, with a number of full-sized training tables and a vast assortment of cutting-edge medical equipment. Also located in the Robert S. Carey Center is the Resnick Pool. A full-sized swimming pool, and the home to the SVC men’s and women’s swimming teams, the facility is frequently used by numerous SVC athletic teams for both in-season and off-season strength and conditioning workouts.
