COACHING STAFF

HEAD COACH SUE HOZAK

The lone head coach in Saint Vincent College volleyball history, Sue Hozak has led the team from its inception in 1985. As a coach - and educator - Hozak believes in educating and guiding students by promoting a positive environment for excelling academically, athletically, and socially to maximize their potential as valuable members of society. And it works. Coach Hozak graduated from Waynesburg University in 1983, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration. She was a three-time All-District setter for the Yellow Jackets, winning three district championships and competing in three NAIA National Championship Tournaments.

A native of North Huntingdon, PA, Hozak graduated from Norwin High School, where she was a setter on three straight PIAA State Championship winners. At Saint Vincent, in addition to her role with the volleyball team, Hozak is also the Assistant Athletic Director, and is in charge of compliance and eligibility for all 20 varsity teams at Saint Vincent. While at SVC, Hozak’s teams have enjoyed a greate deal of success, as she enters the 2011 season with a career record of 510347, and is one of just 20 active coaches in NCAA Division-III with over 500 career victories.

Her personal honors include: 2003 American Mideast Conference Coach of the Year; 1994 AVCA/NAIA Northeast Region Coach of the Year; 1994 Keystone-Empire Conference Coach of the Year; and 1990, ‘92, and ‘93 NAIA District 18 Coach of the Year. In 1994, the Bearcats won the NAIA regional title and advanced to the NAIA National Championships, while her team is currently in the midst of arguably its best run in program history, eclipsing a combined mark of 164-48 dating back to the 2005 campaign. After reaching the NAIA Region IX championship in 2005, the Bearcats won the 2006 and ‘07 ECAC Division-II championships, with the 2006 squad ending the year by winning 18 straight matches and 54 straight sets. The Bearcats again qualified for the ECAC South playoffs in both 2009 (reaching the semifinals) and 2010 (reaching the championship match), and have won at least 19 matches in eight straight seasons, including seven straight 20-win campaigns.

Sue and her husband Mark currently reside in Mount Pleasant, PA, and the coupld has two daughters. Eldest daughter Kristin (Consuegra) is a 2008 graduate of Saint Vincent, where she was a three-time All-Conference setter for the Bearcats, and she currently serves as head volleyball coach at Chatham University. Youngest daughter Natalie is entering her senior year at Saint Vincent, and has been a three-year starter and all-conference outside hitter for the Bearcats.

ASSISTANT COACH SCOTT WISNESKI

Scott Wisneski enters his sixth season on the Bearcat volleyball coaching staff. He assists Coach Hozak with all facets of the program, and during his five years at SVC, the Bearcats have achieved a combined 125-42 overall record, winning the 2006 and 2007 ECAC Division-II titles, while reaching the ECAC semifinals in 2009 and championship match in 2010.

Bearcat Volleyball ‘11

A native of Derry, PA, Scott was a four-year volleyball letterman at perennial powerhouse Derry Area High School. He was a member of the team from 1986-89, during which time the Trojans won two PIAA state titles. In addition to his role at Saint Vincent, Scott has also served as an assistant coach with the Greater Latrobe High School boys program, as well as the Junior Olympic team for the Foohills Club. At Saint Vincent, Scott also works as a supervisor at the control desk of the school’s Fitness Center.

2011 PREVIEW

In the midst of its most successful run in program history, PAC. The 5-10 daughter of hopes are high for the Saint Vincent volleyball team as it enters the Bearcats' coach, Nathe 2011 season. talie was a First Team AllPAC selection a season Last season, the Bearcats finished 24-12, including 10-6 in PAC ago, placing first in the play, advancing to the semifinals of the PAC Championship league in aces (50), Tournament as well as the championship match of the ECAC fourth in digs per set South Tournament. It marked the sixth straight 20-plus win (5.6), and 13th in kills per season for the Bearcats, as the team is 153-49 dating back to set (2.6). “We're really looking forward to working with this team,” she said. “There is a lot of experience coming back, and hopefully that should help us stay as successful as we've been the last few years.” The team looks to be led by the senior duo of outside hitters Natalie Hozak and Taylor Guido, team cocaptains and three-year starters.

Natalie Hozak

Guido has started every match in each of the past three seasons, and, like Hozak, has been solid on both sides of the ball. A 2009 PAC Coaches Honors selection, the 5-8 Guido averaged 2.2 kills and 2.6 digs per set in 2010, while totaling 48 blocks. She totaled at least 10 kills in 15 different matches, posting over 15 twice, while she also turned in seven doubledigit dig performances . After arriving at Saint Vincent as a middle hitter, junior Devin McGrath has turned into one of the top setters in the PAC, continuing the Bearcats' strong tradition at the position. The 5-9 McGrath, who doubles as a starting forward on the Bearcats' nationally-ranked women's basketball team, was an honorable mention All-PAC selection in 2010. She started all 36 matches and tied for second in the PAC with an average of 10.18 assists per set, as she turned in over 40 helpers in nine different matches.

Another well-rounded player, McGrath's rocket serve accounted for 48 aces last season, second in the conference behind only Hozak, while she also averaged 3.4 digs, including 18 matches with 10 digs or more. She also displayed a knack for catching defenders off balance, as she totaled 145 kills, and Natalie Hozak, in her fifth added 44 blocks. year at Saint Vincent after missing the entire '08 A trio of players is battling to replace the departed Petrovich, campaign with an injury, in senior Ashlee Cowles and sophomores Ariel Rocco and Kayla has evolved into one of the Stadleman. The 6-1 Cowles has seen limited playing time over top two-way players in the her first three seasons, but when called upon, she has shown

Saint Vincent College

2011 PREVIEW to be up to the task, including a six-block performance in the 2009 ECAC playoffs against DeSales, and a six-kill showing in the same postseason against Penn State-Behrend. Stadleman saw limited playing time as a freshman, but has impressed during the early days of camp, and looks to see her role expand. Rocco, a teammate of McGrath's on the Bearcat basketball team, enters her first year on the volleyball team, but put together an impressive high school career at Northern Cambria, earning three All-District selections and winning the 2009 PIAA state championship. At the middle hitter spot, sophomores Brittany Hauser and Emily Rosati return after both seeing significant time as freshmen. Hauser tallied 49 kills and 53 blocks in 18 matches, while Rosati had 29 kills and 31 blocks in 30 sets. “They both saw a lot of time as freshman,” Hozak said, “and made tremendous strides as the year went on. I'm confident that both will be able to step into a bigger role and really be significant parts of the team, both offensively and defensively.”

Two other sophomores who were thrust into starting roles during their inaugural season in the green and gold return at defensive specialist, in Megan Lucas and Kaley Burkardt. Lucas started all 36 matches in 2010, and hardly looked like a freshman, as she posted 10 or more digs in 30 matches, averaging 3.7 per set, good for 11th in the conference. The athletic Burkardt came to Saint Vincent as an outside hitter, but barely missed a stride during her first season on defense, as she appeared in all but four sets on the season and averaged 2.2 digs.

Devin McGrath

Bearcat Volleyball ‘11

Also a lacrosse star at Saint Vincent, Burkardt possesses arguably one of the hardest serves in the PAC, as she totaled 36 aces as a freshman.

Two other sophomores, Adrianna Zoscak and Savannah Arbuckle, also return to the defensive specialist spot and look for increased roles in their second season on the team. Zoscak appeared in all 36 matches a year ago, and was used primarily on the serve, Megan Lucas posting 18 aces. Arbuckle, who won a state championship in high school at West Shamokin, appeared in six matches, and has continued to improve throughout the preseason. Another sophomore, Rachel Svovanec, has also looked good in the early going, and should push for time at one of the Bearcats' deepest positions.

In addition to the solid batch of returnees, Hozak's team also welcomes a trio of freshmen, in middle hitter Katie Kohler and setters Anna Christy and Kate McCauley. While the class may be small in number, Hozak feels it could be one of her team's most talented in recent seasons

“We're excited about what each and every one of the freshmen brings to the table,” said the coach. “The freshmen coming in are not green. They all have a tremendous volleyball sense, and it's been hard to tell early on that they've only been with us for a few days, and not a season or two.” The 6-1 Kohler is expected to compete right away with Hauser and Roasti for time in the middle, while Christy and McCauley will provide depth at setter behind McGrath, after “being very good high school setters at a very high level,” Hozak said As the Bearcats prepare for the new season, Hozak's goals for her squad are simple.

“The team's expectation is to follow in the footsteps of the teams before them and continue this run we've had over the past few years,” she said “As always, we want to qualify for the PAC playoffs, with the aspirations of going even further.”

Saint Vincent goes 28-6 on the year, winning the AMC with a 17-1 conference record and advancing to (and hosting) the NAIA Region IX/X Championship Tournament. The program receives a bevy of personal honors. Hozak is again tabbed AMC Coach of the Year, while Lindsey Harkleroad and Ashley Ripple are each named All-Region. Ripple is also named AMC Setter of the Year, AMC Player of the Year, and NAIA All-America.

2006 The Bearcats move from the NAIA to the NCAA Division-III Presidents’ Athletic Conference. The team goes 294, ending the year on a 19-game winning streak, during which they won a program-record 50 straight sets. The season culminates in the Bearcats winning the ECAC Division-II championship by defeating Adelphi. 2007

The Bearcats defend their ECAC championship, defeating the University of Bridgeport in the title bout.

2010

Saint Vincent tops the 20-win plateau for the sixth straight season, and eighth time in 10 years. Hozak picks up her 500th career victory - and the 500th win in program history- in an October match against Grove City. The Bearcats reach the semifinals of the PAC tournament, and advance to the title match of the ECAC Division-III South Playoffs.

TEAM HISTORY ALL-AMERICANS

RENEE McCRACKEN - 1993

Renee became the program’s first NAIA All-American in 1993. A graduate of Greater Latrobe High School, the middle hitter was a three-time All-District and two-time All-Region selection, while serving as the Bearcats’ captain for two seasons. She helped lead the 1993 squad to a then-record 27 wins and a spot in the NAIA Regional Tournament, and setting the single-season school record with 475 kills.

MELANIE PACHUTA - 1994

Melanie was one of two Lady Bearcats to earn NAIA All-America status in 1994, as the team went 26-7, winning the NAIA District and Regional Championships and advancing to the NAIA National Tournament. A middle hitter and graduate of Our Lady of Sacred Heart High School, she was a four-time AllDistrict and two-time All-Region selection, and her 463 kills in 1994 mark the second highest single-season mark in team history.

AMY DeLISA - 1994, 1995

The lone two-time NAIA All-American in program history, Amy was a fourtime All-District and three-time All-Region pick. A native of Johnstown, PA, she also was twice named an NAIA National Scholar Athlete. A setter, she was captain of the 1994 Northeast Region championship team, and her 75 assists recorded in a 1992 win over Westminster are good for second most in a single match in program history.

ASHLEY RIPPLE - 2005

18

Ashley was named NAIA All-America in 2005 after posting 1,458 assists for the Bearcats as they advanced to the NAIA Region IX Tournament, going 286. A native of Gibsonia, PA and graduate of Pine-Richland High School, Ashley was a four-time All-American Mideast Conference selection at setter, while earning AMC Setter of the Year laurels in both 2004 and ‘05 and AMC Player of the Year honors in 2005. She finished her career with over 5,600 assists, including 1,508 in 2003, second most in a season in team history. Saint Vincent College

SAINT VINCENT COLLEGE The Robert S. Carey Center is the home of Saint Vincent College Bearcat Volleyball. An exetnsive reconstruction project took place in 2003, including the addition of a new wing for athletic offices, new locker rooms, weight room, gym surface, seating, and more. From the time the Robert S. Carey Student Center was christened, it became one of the premier facilities in small-college athletics. The floor nearest to the front of the building has a resilient pad underneath, while a similar and seperate court was installed across the rear of the building that provides playing and practice areas for both varsity and intramural teams.

THE ROBERT S. CAREY CENTER

The Carey Center has a seating capacity of 1,250, with both chair-back and bleacher seats. The gym also features a state-of-theart sound system, while it is fully wired to allow live radio, internet, and television broadcasts of Bearcat volleyball. Downstairs from the Carey Center gym, 14 full-sized locker rooms allow comfortable accomodations for both the Bearcats and visiting athletic teams. Also downstairs, the SVC Fitness Center is equipped with a full array of free weights and weight machines, along with exercise bikes, treadmills, and elipticals.

Another area that received an extensive overhaul during the renovations of the Carey Center is the school’s Athletic Training Center. One of the more spacious and modern in small-college athletics, the center offers Saint Vincent athletes ample space for treatment and rehabilitation of injuries, with a number of full-sized tables, a whirlpool, and a vast assortment of cutting-edge medical equipment. Also located in the Robert S. Carey Center is the Resnik Pool. A full-sized swimming pool, and the home of the SVC men’s and women’s swimming teams, the facility is frequently used by numerous SVC athletic teams for both in-season and off-season strength and conditioning workouts.
