Rochdale exhibit to open a whole new world to visitors A stunning replica of planet Earth is coming to Rochdale this year, along with a host of out of this world events and activities. UK artist Luke Jerram’s internationally renowned 'Gaia' installation will see a huge work of art depicting the Earth exhibited at Number One Riverside in the town centre from 20 November until Christmas Eve. Measuring seven metres in diameter and created from detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface, it will provide the opportunity to see the planet on a big scale, floating in three dimensions. The name 'Gaia' comes from Greek mythology, meaning the personification of the Earth. The exhibition is being staged in partnership with Rochdale Borough Council and Your Trust (formerly Link4Life), supported financially by the Garfield Weston Foundation. The team have planned a series of special events across the borough to accompany Gaia, themed around looking after our environment and its precious resources. Councillor Sue Smith, cabinet member for communities and co-operation at Rochdale Borough Council said: "This is very exciting, and as we saw with Dippy the dinosaur, Number One Riverside is a great exhibition space. Gaia is breath-taking, spectacular and quite extraordinary in equal measure. This will be an opportunity to give visitors a new perspective of our place on the planet. We are developing a series of supporting installations, exhibits and events around Gaia. We never usually get to see the earth from this perspective, Gaia will be awe inspiring!"

Ahead of its visit to Rochdale, Gaia will be visiting Hull, the USA, the Netherlands, Norwich, Norway and Canada before reaching the borough just in time for the start of the festive season.

Darren Grice, deputy chief executive of Your Trust added: "We’re delighted to build on the success of Dippy on Tour, bringing another fantastic creative spectacle to the borough. Just as with Dippy, we hope that seeing the earth as if floating in space, will wow visitors and inspire each of us to protect our precious planet. The United Nations Climate Change Conference in November will be a thought provoking prelude to some very exciting activities here in Rochdale." A specially made surround sound composition by BAFTA award winning Composer Dan Jones will be played alongside the sculpture.

Further details about its stay in Rochdale are available at www.rochdale.gov.uk/events

DA N R H O D E S Talented Rochdale magician, Dan Rhodes, recently became the UK's fastest growing YouTuber. The 18-year-old, self taught magician has over 5 million subscribers and a mindblowing 4.5 billion views on YouTube, plus another 7 million fans on TikTok. Readers may also recognise Dan from his appearance on Britain's Got Talent in 2019. Style caught up with with Dan to chat about his incredible online success, his exciting future plans and why his feet remain firmly on the ground...

4 | Rochdale Style

exclusive When did you begin to learn magic? When I was seven years old, my uncle taught me a new trick every single week he’d teach me the trick and I’d show him the trick I’d learnt the previous week. I loved magic anyway as Dynamo was on television a lot at the time. I’d also been on a cruise and there was a magician there who inspired me quite a bit. Then, I learnt the rest online from tutorial videos on YouTube. I just kept going from there really and never stopped! I’ve been doing magic in some form or another, TV shows and gigs, since I was a kid and obviously videos for about three years now. I’ve kind of been working at it for about ten years. What’s the best thing about being a magician? I think it’s the reactions. I love when you can show someone a really cool trick and they just go crazy! Anyone I meet I can just whip out a pack of cards, show them a trick and instantly they’re blown away. What's the most difficult trick you've had to learn? I had to remember the order of a full deck of cards for this one trick… I can’t remember how to do it now but I had to remember the order of 52 cards and it took three weeks to learn! How many decks of cards do you own? Only about 500! A lot of them I have opened but I’ve got a lot of sealed ones as well as I used to collect them - I’ve just got a house full of cards!

We presume they aren’t the same as the playing cards we all have in a drawer?! Some are. I could still do tricks with those but it helps when they’re better quality. I’ve got one that’s worth 500 quid now but I I bought it for 10 or 20 quid! How does it feel to be the UK’s top YouTuber? There’s YouTubers bigger than me, like KSI, but in terms of growth, at the moment, it’s me so it’s pretty mad! I’m third in the world at the minute too for fastest growing YouTuber so it’s pretty crazy. Do you think you’ll reach the top spot worldwide? Probably not because there’s a guy [in second place] called MrBeast who is on 60 million subscribers and he just grows like crazy. Number one is this company called T-Series which is a company where it’s got 200 millions subscribers. Then there’s people like PewDiePie who are just individuals who make videos, like me.

Do you think lockdown helped? Yeah - I think because everyone was sort of sat down on their phones and no one was going out, it really blew up on the apps. Everyone knew about Instagram, Facebook [etc] but it was the perfect time for everyone to explore TikTok, because it wasn’t the biggest app in the world but it was something new. What do you think makes your videos so popular? I think it’s the clarity and that anyone can understand them in any language. They’re so simple yet effective. If I was doing a magic trick it’s very straightforward; it’s watch this -‘BOOM’ - and the trick’s done. So, it’s very fast and visual and that’s what has caught on, as it’s very easy to watch without getting bored. (continued...)

Have you always been ambitious? Yeah, I’d say I’ve always wanted to do well in magic and grow bigger - so I’ve just stuck at it and it’s paying off now. When did you start to gain millions of followers? At the start of lockdown I had about 200K on TikTok, 50K on Instagram and then TikTok kind of blew up. After about six months or so, I hit a million on TikTok and it just kept growing from there. And then when YouTube released Shorts I started posting all my TikToks on there so that kind of blew up as well. Rochdale Style | 5

exclusive

(...continued)

Do you have followers all over the world? Yeah, I’ve got them in Australia, India, Indonesia, America. It’s quite diverse. So you could visit anywhere in the world and people would recognise you… Yeah, it’s really weird to think that! I think if I went to India I’d get mobbed. They love magic in India - I think I’ve actually got 2 million subscribers just in India. How many views is classed as viral? I’d probably say a million, maybe. Do most of your videos get that many views? Some only get a few hundred thousand but yeah, most of them go viral. I had one two weeks ago that had 50 million views. Can you always tell which videos will go viral? Sometimes… I normally have a feel for it and I’m right 7 out of 10 times but sometimes the ones you put hours into don’t do as well but then it’s the ones you think of last minute that’ll do really well. So yeah, sometimes it’s the ones you least expect. How many do you post a day? Probably five a day at the minute. It’s good to be consistent because with social media - anything can go viral at any time but it’s good when you’re growing a lot to ride the wave of it. 6 | Rochdale Style

Wow, that must keep you busy… Yeah! I’ve always got five videos ready for the next day. Then at night time I’ll edit them and I’ll spend an hour and a half coming up with ideas for the day after… Then the next day I’ll post the vids I’ve made yesterday as I’m busy making the vids for the day after that! You’re very down-to-earth - how do you keep your feet on the ground when you’re enjoying such phenomenal success? When people recognise me I just think, it doesn’t really mean I’m famous - it just means people are seeing the content I’m doing. I’m grateful that it’s going so well for me at the minute as you never really know what’s around the corner. You could be known one minute, then gone another, so it’s just keeping the ball rolling. What advice would you give to people who are hoping to grow their social media following? Find what they like doing, whether it’s a singer, a chef or a magician and just be consistent at it. At first your vids won’t do really well but keep at it and eventually it’ll start to pay off. What’s next in store for you? I want to hit 10 million on YouTube and get a Diamond Play Button which is an award you get for 10 million. I want to do my own tour and my own TV show. I’ve got some really exciting stuff coming up.

Where would you like to be in 10 years’ time? That’s a hard one as I don’t know where I’ll be next month! But I hope I’ll still be growing and still enjoying where I’m at and what I’m doing. You’ve just had your first tattoo – what does it say? It says 'dream bigger'. I quite like it.

ROCHDALE TOWN CENTRE'S OUTSTANDING FOOD & DRINK SCENE Rochdale Town Centre's impressive and continually evolving food and drink scene is cementing its reputation as a must-visit destination in the North of England.

There is something for everyone, to suit every occasion, taste and budget, from rustic wine bars to historic pubs; Indian street food to authentic Italian cuisine; gin trees to cheeky vimto fishbowls!

The town centre recently welcomed three more exciting venues - house music bar The 13ar, micro pub D'Ale House and social hub and bar Hoochi Koochi, where you can enjoy everything from comedy nights to Northern Soul nights - bringing the grand total to over thirty food and drink venues, all within short walking distance of one another, in the heart of Rochdale.

Tom McNeeney, Business Development Manager at The Lancashire Hospitality Co-operation - the team behind The Flying Horse, The Baum and Bombay Brew - commented:

Rochdale has recently been compared to Manchester's Northern Quarter, due to the number of quality, independent eateries and the outstanding variety on offer in such close vicinity... and who are we to argue?! Paul Ambrose, Business Improvement District Manager, said: "Rochdale’s food and drink scene has gained momentum and recognition over the last few years. The impact of the growing food and drink offer cannot be underestimated as it boosts footfall, it makes a significant contribution to the local economy and it is helping to change the perceptions of a centre that it is transforming. "The recent Food and Drink Festival showcased some of the very best of Rochdale’s diverse offerings and patrons took advantage of tasty offers at our lauded local businesses who strive for ensuring a great customer experience. I encourage everyone to connect with our town centre food and drink businesses and their owners."

The Medicine Tap

La Mancha

"While the last 18 months have been a real challenge for hospitality, since we’ve been able to reopen the offering in Rochdale is just going from strength to strength! There’s finally a real sense that the town centre is changing, that it’s finding a real identity of it’s own, with incredible new venues opening their doors every month and the existing businesses constantly reinvigorating what they do best it’s really a place that’s starting to turn heads. Whether it’s cocktails with the girls or live music, fine dining or street food, Rochdale can honestly say it’s got the lot." Helping to diversify the offering even further, Rochdale BID has been successful in introducing the popular Food & Artisan Market and Vegan Market into the town. The Food & Artisan Market takes place on the first Saturday of every month and the Vegan Market will be returning on 18th December 2021. Live music is well and truly back throughout many town centre venues, including at The Flying Horse, where you can find local bands, jam nights, sunday sessions, along with a huge range of real ales and homemade dishes. The pedestrianised outdoor dining area on Packer Street is still proving popular post-lockdown, serving customers of The Flying Horse Hotel, The Empire, Yate’s and KoKo’s.

The Baum

Mannerist

Hogarths

The Baum

Just across the road, The Medicine Tap retains its historic character and charm of the old central Post Office and offers a unique place to relax while enjoying the finest coffees, quality locally sourced food and a fabulous choice of ales. The outdoor terrace at Bean Cafe at Rochdale Riverside is also a firm favourite with visitors, providing a stylish, relaxing environment in which to enjoy lunch, fresh coffee and cake. The Baum in Rochdale’s historic Toad Lane always turns heads with it’s enviable beer selection but now boasts a modern British menu and newly transformed walled beer garden, beautifully lit with festoon lights.

Next to Hogarths, lively Wetherspoons pub The Regal Moon remains a firm favourite. The Reed, just off Yorkshire Street, is another fun, friendly venue and the perfect place to start a night out.

The much improved and re-branded Baillie Street Quarter is home to Petit Bistro where you can find everything from bottomless brunches to club sandwiches and delicious hearty meals. Above Petit Bistro is the fabulous Treehouse bar - the place for cocktails and rum. Just around the corner is La Mancha, offering authentic Spanish Tapas in a relaxed atmosphere.

Street food and craft beer emporium, Bombay Brew, has now reopened with a new menu of reinvented Indian classics alongside a fantastic beer line out and a dreamy cocktail list. They serve beautiful small dishes which are made to be shared alongside their take on traditional curries.

Also in the Baillie Street Quarter is hidden gem, Vicolo Del Vino, a beautiful rustic wine bar combining real traditional Italian food with an array of specialist wine, beer and gin from around the world. There's also outdoor seating on a quaint cobbled street and live music nights. Situated above Vicolo Del Vino, quirky micro pub The Pint Pot offers rotating cask ales, a fantastic range of bottled beers, wines and a light lunch and nibbles menu. Located on South Parade in the former Union Bank of Manchester, is the impressive Mannerist bar and restaurant, offering an exciting cocktail menu and a fusion of Italian and American cuisine where diners can enjoy everything from pizza to chilli beef tacos to mouth-watering steaks.

The delectable Heavenly Desserts, based at Rochdale Riverside, provides the very finest in sweet treats and a new addition to The Butts is Jamaican restaurant, Caribbean Vybz. Austrailia's leading gourmet pizza brand Crust has opened at Rochdale Riverside and is already proving popular.

The Cask and Feather, at the top of Drake Street, boasts a comprehensive and varied selection of cask and keg ales which can be enjoyed in the cosy interior or the charming beer garden. Other fantastic venues for lunch with friends or coffee and cake include Pudding Paradise, Cafe Grand Abaco, M&S Cafe, Costa (within Next) and the newly reopened Russells Cafe. Many venues featured are part of the LoyalFree app where you can find exclusive deals and loyalty schemes. WATERGROVE

HEALEY STONES

Wardle, Rochdale, OL12 9PL FREE Although parts of this walk are do-able with a pram, in order to get all the way round you will need a carrier. Similarly, only parts of this walk are suitable for kids’ bikes (as there are a variety of terrains including cobbles and steps).

Easiest access points - Road Lane (off Whitworth Rd) or top of Dewhirst Road (Syke)

Situated at the top of Wardle Village, Watergrove Reservoir offers spectacular views and is a dog's paradise (although watch out for deer!). Another plus is that there is a large free car park.

Who knew there is a miniature Stonehenge in Rochdale? Standing not far from Brownhouse Wham Reservoir and Hamer Pasture Reservoir is the Healey Stone Circle. Large boulders to climb on or hide behind (for the kids) and the most stunning view (for you)!

PIETHORNE RESERVOIR Ogden Lane, Newhey, OL16 3TQ You have to park at the bottom of the road and walk upwards along the road for a while (but it’s a very quiet road). At the top you will see the path around Piethorne off to your left (with the very pretty gate). There are other reservoirs lower down such as Ogden Reservoir but we chose Piethorne because of the circular, pram-friendly path (I love a circular route). However, there were a few gates which couldn’t fit the pram through and I was forced to be The Hulk and lift it over. It's a lovely, child-friendly walk with beautiful views, a waterfall, woods (bluebells in the spring) and wildlife.

Catherine Aspinall, a local mum of two lively children and an equally energetic pug, shares her top family day out ideas. Near Tesco, OL11 3EX Prices start at £5.95 for the trampoline park up to £14.95 for both the trampolines and inflatables. There is “Toddler Time” in term-time

The toddler sessions at Sparks Gym are back! Here the kids can run riot on all the gymnastic equipment; balancing on beams, jumping on springboards and hanging off bars... EXACTLY like they have seen on the Olympics. There’s also more play houses than you can shake a stick at, foam building blocks, a huge springy floor area and a few slides. Plus a little cafe for drinks and snacks. 14 | Rochdale Style

Starting 11th November until Christmas Eve there will be a huge, spectacular, floating, rotating replica of the Earth 'in Rochdale. We went to see Gaia back in 2019 when it was in Liverpool Cathedral and it really is quite a sight to behold. Gaia will also be accompanied by a new surround sound musical composition so the whole experience should be quite awesome and inspiring, or even relaxing and meditative (if you are not going with my kids).

For a whole lot of bouncing fun get yourself down to Flip Out! There are what feels like A MILLION trampolines plus towers to climb, buckaroos to ride, tumble tracks to charge down and a car to launch yourself off! It’s a great place to let the kids run wild with guaranteed soft landings and without anything in your house getting broken!

Rochdale, OL11 1DN Adults £7, children £5, under 4s free (family tickets £20)

I’ve loved crazy golf all my life and my son appears to have inherited this obsession. We’ve played many crazy golf courses and I did once possess the title of “Crazy Golf Champion of Agadir” (no word of a lie)… but still, Puttstars in Rochdale did not disappoint.

The much anticipated new fire station museum - along with the brand new Fireground Cafe - finally opened on 14th August and for the fire engine fanatics amongst us (I know a few) it was worth the wait…

The holes were exciting and unusual, including a Ferris wheel, a bridge and a surfboard, and everything was so bright and clean. The scores were also done electronically so you didn’t have to carry a little wooden pencil and scorecard around with you (although I do quite like the baby pencils).

It is much different from the previous museum. For starters, you can now dress up as a firefighter and slide down a pole! There are lots of different engines on show, from ancient to the present day, and other little artefacts to look at too. There's also interesting information to read about the Great Fire of London and The Blitz.

Fun was had by all (and no one was knocked unconscious with a putter).

My favourite part (being the history geek I am) was obviously the old Victorian street section (although I was also partial to a bit of dressing up). The kids' favourite part was the interactive fire engine driving game where you have to make the correct decisions to save a lady from a flood and a cat from a tree!

A good activity for a rainy day with three different courses to choose from and an arcade if you want some extra fun!

The Fireground is open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday (10-4) and keep an eye out for extra events happening throughout the year.

Food and drink was also available (including wine… which is often needed when dealing with kids with putters and golf balls).

ROBBIE STOCKDALE

Rochdale Football Club recently welcomed Robbie Stockdale as their new First Team Manager. The ambitious 41-year-old has played across the leagues notching up over 250 appearances at clubs including Middlesbrough, Sheffield Wednesday, West Ham, Rotherham United and Hull City. He started his coaching career at Grimsby Town in 2010 before going on to join Sunderland two years later. Robbie spent six years at Sunderland and was part of the first team set up under the likes of Sam Allardyce, as well as having three stints as caretaker manager. After leaving the Black Cats, he was appointed as Paul Heckingbottom’s assistant at Hibernian in 2019, before reuniting with Allardyce in 2020 as first team coach at West Bromwich Albion. He was also capped five times by Scotland during his career. Style caught up with Robbie, who has joined Rochdale on a two year contract, to discuss his first managerial position, his hopes for the season and why Dale supporters will always be the 'lifeblood of the club'... 18 | Rochdale Style

exclusive Style: How are you settling into the club? Robbie: I’m settling in very well. Everyone’s been very welcoming. It’s really good to be back on the grass working with the players - that’s what I enjoy doing. Why did you want to come to Rochdale? Obviously the job came up and I’d been waiting for an opportunity to get in as a manager for some time. I feel like I’ve done the hard yards; I’ve worked at every level from youth teams to Premier League and you know, sometimes it’s just a good fit. I’ve turned down jobs in the past, I’ve missed out on jobs in the past but when I spoke to the board it felt quite fresh and exciting to be part of a club that’s fan owned. It’s certainly unique in many ways; there’s not many of those types of clubs around and if we can get it going and everybody is aligned and we’ve got the same goal, we’ll have a good chance of success. What convinced you to take your first step into management? I felt that it was the right time for quite a while to be perfectly honest but the opportunity or the jobs that come up haven’t really appealed. This one just felt a little bit more like an opportunity that I could be successful at rather than going into a team that was really struggling. Coming in before the season was also a big factor; quite often jobs come up, Christmas/January time and those are jobs which are really difficult to get the team back up the league and they might be in relegation trouble. So, this one is almost a clean slate, for everybody. What’s your aim for the season? My aim is to be as successful as possible which is ultimately promotion back to League One. Now people have sort of criticised me for saying that and setting too high standards or too high targets, but I think realistically we should be aiming for that. I’d imagine that every other manager in this industry and this league would be saying the same thing; nobody wants to settle for second best, so our aim is to be promoted. Now, we will work ever so hard to try and achieve that and if we don’t, then we’ll obviously have to review that at the end of the season, but fingers crossed we’ll achieve what we want to achieve.

Have you had chance to get to know the Academy players coming through?

What advice would you give to young, aspiring footballers?

Yeah, we’ve had five training up with us all the time - Ethan, AJ, Jordan, Ben and Kacper. They took part in nearly all our pre-season games and have done very well; I’m very impressed. I’m big on personality and character and they all seem grounded and very hard working. I know the club’s history with producing players and hopefully that will continue with my sort of background in developing players and working closer with the academy.

The ability gets you into the building, it’s your attitude that keeps you there. What I mean by that is, that I played with many a player who was better than me growing up but maybe didn’t have the attitude, application or the drive to carry it on. Believe it or not, being a footballer is quite difficult, it’s almost a 24/7 job. You have to live your life right, off the pitch, and on the pitch you’ve got to be dedicated and work hard. Also - you’ve got to have fun; there’s a time to be serious and there’s a time to relax. The environment you want to create in a football club is for players to enjoy coming in and that’s what we try to develop here.

Who are your role models? I don’t think I have a role model - I think you’re influenced by many things such as people you work and play with. I suppose I always enjoyed playing in a team which was on the front foot, attacking, trying to score as many goals as we possibly can and not sitting off the opponents. That was kind of my mantra in the best teams I played in. Obviously, I’ve worked with some outstanding managers as well and you steal little bits from each one and I’m very keen to say that I’m a young person and I won’t try to imitate anybody. I’m going to try to be authentic to me. You have a new Assistant Manager, Jimmy Shan – have you worked together before? What will he bring to the club? I’ve known Jimmy for a long time but this is our first time working together. We’ve known each other through our coaching badges for 6/7 years, maybe even longer. I know Jimmy will bring absolute quality on the training pitch, he’s a fantastic coach. He’s very enthusiastic and able to take the strain off me when I’ve got other things to deal with as the manager and again we trust each other implicitly. I know Jimmy will give his all to be successful, as I will.

Do you have a message for the supporters? It’s really exciting to see you back and hopefully we’ll give you a team to be proud of. We hope to entertain you and hope that if we win, lose or draw you can come away from the game having enjoyed yourself and having seen a team that’s given its all for the supporters. I guarantee we’ll demand 100% every game and I think if supporters see that on the pitch they’ll forgive maybe not winning a game, but if the players are leaving it all out there then that’s the bare minimum. Supporters are the lifeblood of the club, they’ll be here long after myself and all the players - it’s their club and we want to make them proud.

A ROCHDALE CATERING PARTNERSHIP

"Putting real food, made in Rochdale, into fans' hands" Rochdale AFC are delighted to announce a new catering partnership with The Lancashire Hospitality Co-operation, who will be providing matchday catering services in all of its catering kiosks. Dale Chairman Simon Gauge said: “We are extremely pleased to bring fans a matchday catering provision that they deserve. Our aim is to deliver the best quality matchday food unrivalled in any League and make it so good, fans will come early to the game, just to experience the food. We want to be a club that puts the fan’s experience first.” Tom McNeeney, Business Development Manager of The Lancashire Hospitality Co-operation - the company behind award winning local venues such as The Flying Horse, The Baum and Bombay Brew - commented: “The opportunity to create a partnership like this comes once in a lifetime. We’ve worked tirelessly to design a matchday offering that is familiar but trendsetting. We are a local company, staffed by local people, fronted by Rochdale businessman of the year, Ben Boothman and some of the finest catering minds in the industry. We want to prove that great food can be anywhere, even pitch side.” "As a local company it’s incredible to see the changes in Rochdale AFC, a club that is making the fan experience the driving force behind each and every game, from the legendary music in the stadium to the food on offer to every fan. The opportunity to create an memorable match day offering for such a committed community club is something we’ve taken the upmost pride in, we’ve devoted countless hours of research and development into giving the fans a quality and variety not often seen pitchside. "We’ve partnered with an incredible local pie maker, given jobs to local people, committed to reducing the club’s carbon footprint and even giving out easy peelers to kids on match days, we want to be everything a fan wants from a club catering partner. From meat potato pie made with proper meat, cheese pies made with proper cheese and chicken balti pies with a proper kick we’re pushing the boat out with a pie selection that is something really special. And if that’s not enough we’re proudly offering for those after something really different, a range of kebabs made with fresh ingredients pre wrapped for a taste on the terrace with a difference, made of fresh chicken tikka or smashed samosas on a hot naan, with salad, sauce and pickled chillis - it’s time to throw out the rule book and concentrate on giving the crowd what they want.

We’re bringing our incredible “beefy beef soup” to every kiosk, a Bovril based broth packed full of beef and chunky vegetables that will have us looking forward to midweek games on a freezing day…almost. As well as sausage cheese and bean slices for the kids, more vegetarian and vegan choices, no more processed meat, just real food, made in rochdale, put into the fans hands. "Not to mention our commitment to offering a free piece of fruit to every single child attending a game as a reminder of the fantastic things football and hospitality can do when they work together, something we hope to inspire more and more clubs to follow Rochdale’s lead in.

"We’re starting strong and want to listen to the fans, adapting and evolving season after to season to make the fantastic food at Spotland one of the real talking points of any home game. We just can’t wait to get started." Frances Fielding, Rochdale AFC Commercial Director, added: "We are very excited to work with The Lancashire Hospitality Co-operation and The Northern Pie Company and are confident that fans will be not just impressed, but blown away with new offering and left with a lasting impression long after the final whistle." Rochdale AFC working in partnership with The Lancashire Hospitality Cooperation and The Northern Pie Company are proud to finally be "putting real food, made in Rochdale, into fans’ hands."

foodfood & drink

Tom McNeeney from The Lancashire Hospitality Co shares a few of his favourite autumn recipes... When it comes to autumn those short days and cold nights hit real hard in Rochdale, it’s my favourite season for the crisp mornings and the golden afternoons but also because autumn brings with it the best food too, slow cooked wonders that hold up to the cold and windy evenings. Light the fire, draw the curtains and knock up one of these little beauties, it’s almost enough to make you excited for winter. Almost.

3 garlic cloves - sliced 4 white onions - sliced Pinch of brown sugar 175ml white wine Unhealthy amount of black pepper 1 heaped teaspoon Branston Pickle 1 tablespoon brown sauce 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar 2 bay leaf 1 litre beef stock 10 slices of french stick 120g grated gruyere

French onion soup

Start by putting a lug of olive oil into a big saucepan on a medium heat, pour in your onions, garlic and a pinch of brown sugar.

When those dark nights are incoming there really isn’t anything better than a french onion soup complete with it’s cheesy hat for fighting off the winter chills. 22 | Rochdale Style

The thing that separates a good French Onion soup from a bad one is nerve. It’s going against your instinct and getting those onions good and coloured before you do anything else to them.

Now this is the difficult bit, keep cooking those onions until they really start to caramelise, they’ll go translucent, then begin to brown, then finally start to go darker and stickier.

Move them very occasionally but let the heat and that sugar do all the work. Once your onions are good and brown pour in your wine and scrape, scrape, scrape. All that cooked on flavour on the bottom of the pan will come loose and you’ll be rewarded with a clean pan and the best tasting fried onions in the world. Turn the heat down after a few minutes and lob in the Branston, brown sauce, balsamic and give it a good twenty twists of a pepper grinder, I’d say even more but it’s probably a bit excessive. Cook it down for five more minutes until it’s dark brown and almost sticky. Then pour in your beef stock, lash in a bay leaf and turn down the heat. Cook down for an hour or so at least. Turn on the grill while you ladle your soup into bowls, top each bowl with slices of French stick and a generous helping of grated gruyere then grill till it’s a gooey, bubbling bowl of perfection.

Corned beef cobbler You know what’s better than corned beef hash? Corned beef hash topped with blue cheese dumplings and even more cheese. 1 large white onion diced 4 carrots (leave the skin on) chopped 1/2 a swede, diced 4 potatoes, skin on, peeled & diced 1 tin of corned beef A good few dashes of Worcestershire sauce A tablespoon of brown sauce White pepper 500ml bovril 200g self raising flour 100g suet 100g stilton Bunch of chives (finely chopped) 80g grated mature cheddar

Right, I’m guessing you don’t need to know how to make corned beef hash but lets recap; Sweat off your onions, add in your carrot and swede, then season.

food Cook down the veg for five, give it a good few splashes of Worcestershire sauce and some white pepper, add in your potatoes and Bovril. Whack a lid on and give it 15 minutes, uncover, stir in a chopped tin of corned beef and a spoonful of brown sauce, cook it for 10 more minutes. Get it? Got it? Good. Now in a mixing bowl combine the suet, flour and stilton using your fingertips until you have a breadcrumby consistency. Then add in about 75ml of warm water and bring together into a dough, roll into balls smaller than a golf ball and place on top of your corned beef hash in an oven safe bowl or pan. Sprinkle over the cheddar and put the lot in an oven on 180ºc for about 25 minutes. CAREFULLY get it out the oven and admire.

My best ever sausage & mash This is always going to be my favourite, my go to, my hangover remedy, birthday tea, cheer up tea, death row dinner… in short, the one. 6 decent sausages 3 red onions - sliced 2 slices smoked back bacon finely diced 2 garlic cloves - sliced 75ml red wine Rosemary, thyme or bay leaf 500ml beef stock 1 heaped tsp tomato puree Few dashes of Worcestershire sauce A sprinkle of smoked paprika About 400g mashed potato Bunch of spring onions, finely chopped 160g grated cheddar 1 heaped teaspoon of wholegrain mustard

First things first you’re going to want to seal off your sausages in a deep frying pan over a medium heat, take them out and use the fat from them to fry your red onions, smoked bacon and garlic. After all, where there’s fat, there’s flavour.

Once everything’s well on it’s way pour in a small glass of red wine and scrape the bottom of the pan to deglaze. Give it five minutes to cook off the alcohol then stir in your tomato puree, season liberally with black pepper and add in a little Worcestershire sauce and a pinch of smoked paprika. Pour in your beef stock, reintroduce your sausages to the party and add some herbs - anything rough and ready like rosemary, thyme or bay is perfect - don’t worry about chopping them just Jamie Oliver it, chuck 'em in. Cover for 20 minutes to cook then uncover for ten minutes until the gravy has began to thicken up nicely. For your mash: I’m not going to tell you how to make mash and I’m not going to judge you if you just buy mash. But get your mash pipping hot and fold though a decent pile of grated cheddar to melt though it, a whole pile of spring onions for some texture and some wholegrain mustard for bite. Divide your mash between two bowls, crown with sausages and pour over that dark, rich gravy. There’s nothing not to like here. Rochdale Style | 23

mental health

"Admitting that you're struggling is one of the hardest things you can do, but it's also one of the most liberating opportunities you can gift yourself with."

STRUGGLING, PAIN AND THE LIBERATING FEELING OF TALKING BY BRAD GARTLAND On 19th August 2016, aged just 45, my dad, Stephen Gartland, known as ‘Garty’, sadly took his own life after a battle with depression. He was a loving, thoughtful, and generous man who always had a smile on his face, giving up a lot of his time to help others. Although he always had a huge smile, he couldn’t express his thoughts or emotions, and felt like he couldn’t reach out to people.

From the outside perspective, my dad looked like he had ‘everything’: a caring family, a great job, successful rugby league career, so many supportive mates. But, no matter how good someone’s life looks from the outside; you never know what that person is truly going through. Knowing that my dad felt like he had no other option breaks me, as I know there was so much help out there for him. But my life goal is now to make a difference for others.

3. And - no matter how bad you feel, please remember that your situation is temporary and there is so much help out there.

What have I learnt from this life changing experience?

Since Andy’s Man Club opened in Rochdale in November 2020, over 100 men have walked through the door, talked, listened, and now have a fantastic network of support. Some of these men now even help run the group alongside me. Andy’s Man Club now has over 50 groups nationally, and is a safe, confidential, and non-judgemental place where men can come and talk about their problems, every Monday (excluding bank holidays) at 7pm.

1. No matter how big or small your problem is, it is so important that you talk about it. 2. Being positive doesn’t mean you have to be happy all the time. Being positive means that even on your darkest days, you know that there are better ones coming. 28 | Rochdale Style

Since my dad’s sad passing, with the help of some amazing individuals, I now run a weekly male mental health talking group, Andy’s Man Club in Rochdale at Mayfield Sports Centre in Castleton, as well as being a trustee of the Stephen Gartland Foundation.

mental health Of course, admitting that you’re struggling is one of the hardest things you can do, but it’s also one of the most liberating opportunities you can gift yourself with. Once you accept that you’re struggling, you’re no longer hiding from your demons. You can start to look internally, the next step into proactively making a positive difference. One of the most inspiring and empowering things for me, is seeing 30+ men in a room, some for the first time, and some that have been coming for months, openly talking about their week, month, and life. Before walking into the room for the first time, these men thought that they were alone - they felt isolated, and they thought no one could relate to them. Instead, by taking that brave step, they have listened, talked, and now made connections with so many different blokes. The fact is these groups are more than a Monday. These men now know that they’re not alone, and they will most likely go home and start to open more to their family/friends, creating a culture shift in their home and workplace, bringing this environment of no judgement with them, significantly crushing the stigma associated with mental health. These men, once worried to admit that they were struggling, now become proud of the fact that they made that first step. They’re no longer ashamed, they’re empowered. They’re no longer silent about what they’ve been through, they’re inspiring people with their stories; creating a ripple effect of more people stepping forward. This is real life. People can feel depressed, anxious, and develop low self-worth for many different reasons, whether it is due to a relationship breakup, losing a job, losing a relative, or some people may not be able to pinpoint a reason why they feel this way. All these feelings are natural, and I can assure you that you’re not alone when you feel this way. One important point to remember is that these events do not change who you are as a person. You are still the same amazing person as before. Remember how much you’ve already been through and you’re still here fighting… that is something to be proud of!

A mental health emergency should be taken as seriously as a physical one. You are a loved, valued, and appreciated person, and you deserve to be here. I thought I’d leave you with some positive and heart-warming comments, from men that at one point felt so low they could not see a way out. Sending love, Brad Gartland - Andy’s Man Club Facilitator and Stephen Gartland Foundation Trustee

“Good session tonight, thanks guys for a positive start to the week as well as a laugh and meeting new people” “A massive, massive thank you to the group and the support in the past few months. When I first came to the group, I didn’t think I’d make the wedding. I was worried I’d be anxious and not enjoy the day. I was, quite simply, broken. The team and all the members have made such a difference, which culminated in being able to have the best day with my beautiful wife”. “Thanks guys, tonight you were all amazing and welcoming to me. You made it easy to talk about my problems”. “I grabbed hold of some life-changing techniques at AMC and I do try to use them on down days. Stuff like responding rather than reacting, recognising that things do pass. Not every day is a belter, and the rollercoaster still exists, but with the help of a set of blokes I hardly know at AMC, I deal with myself and the challenges of life in a different way. I now attend AMC to give myself a weekly check in... it just works.”

Style met local nurse and entrepreneur, Caroline Gizzi, to discuss her exciting new Littleborough business, The Skin Studio...

We offer dermal filler which is an anti aging treatment that plumps, adds volume and lifts the skin leaving it smooth, contoured and youthful. Popular treatments include nose to mouth grooves, mouth to chin lines, cheeks, chin and jaw line definition, smokers lines, nose refinement, lip volumisation, acne pits and scarring.

After working for the NHS for 30 years, what made you decide it was time for a career change? I've worked as an adult nurse, health visitor and children’s advanced practitioner and then worked my way up to being an executive director. It was more than full on and at times very stressful trying to juggle home life and work. After some reflection I decided to choose a better work/life balance and I wanted to return to a patient facing role. It took me two years to decide which path to take but last year I finally took the plunge and have absolutely no regrets!

We can also treat excessive sweating by using the prescription only medication botulinum toxin. Micro needling is an advanced treatment using a sterile micro needling medical device to stimulate the skin to rejuevenate and repair itself naturally. This treatment is great for excessive pigmentation, acne, scar tissue and roseacea. Sunekos skin boosters is another treatment ideal for those who wish to maintain a natural look. Sunekos is an injectable forumla of amino acids and hyaluronic acid and stimulates the skin to produce collagen and elastin, to treat lines, wrinkles, loss of skin tone, skin ageing, sun damage etc.

How did you spend lockdown? We built The Skin Studio! We are fortunate to live in the countryside in Calderbrook, Littleborough, so I decided to place my Skin Studio sign outside our house. As all people were able to do during lockdown was walk, the foot fall past our house was constant. Many passers by asked for leaflets and also commented on the lovely setting in which we live. It made sense to build the studio as we have the outside space and because of our location it is very private to visit, which is important to our patients.

We also offer Alumier MD home care and in clinic treatments to suit every skin type, tone and condition. Our offer of in-clinic treatments includes customised medical grade skin peels and skin treatments to acheive optimum skin health.

As well as working on setting up The Skin Studio I worked throughout the pandemic as a clinical specialist at North West Ambulance Service. They were super busy so it seemed like the right thing to do to utilise my clinical skills and help out. Demand for ambulances hasn’t reduced, so I still do occasional work for them. They are such an amazing group of colleagues and it gave me a focus during the difficult months of the pandemic. What makes The Skin Studio unique? Quite simply we are a medical service, so clients benefit from nearly 30 years of clinical experience and an in depth understanding of the anatomy and physiology of skin. We use only the very best quality products and provide a pre-treatment consultation and follow up appointment. Clinical safety before, during and after treatment is paramount to us and we are also able to prescribe prescription medication. We are set in the tranquility of Calderbrook, with a stunning view and relaxed, confidential environment. What treatments do you offer? We pride ourselves on offering a diverse range of medically led, contemporary and modern skin services for all ages, such as line and wrinkle treatment, which is the world's most popular non surgical treatment of the face to combat fine lines and deep wrinkles. The results are remarkable, with very few clinical risks and no recovery time.

What are your future hopes for The Skin Studio? That our patients continue to come back to us time and time again, feel confident and safe in our care and are happy with the results. Patient satisfaction and recommendation is so important to us. We have future ambitions to offer quality teaching to fellow clinicians so that we are able to support safe, quality services. Contact The Skin Studio for advice on the best treatments to suit you or to book a free consultation.

Bluebird Care Rochdale celebrate three successful years On Bluebird Care Rochdale's third anniversary, Director John Keogh explains why the company continues to go from strength to strength: "I cannot believe it has been three years already. So much has happened in that She's liketime. a Registration, our first care assistant, first customer, office break ins and ceiling collapses, video calls with bag and of gold. the Mayor presentations, an office move, not to mention the obvious over the last 18 months or so. "After thousands of hours, hundreds of customers and scores of care assistants, I am so inspired everyday by our team to constantly strive for improvement. "I considered myself a pretty empathetic individual when we started, but I would hope my emotional intelligence is so much deeper and wider now. I am humbled by our team. They deliver so much more than the tasks put in front of them. They have delivered a touch point during times of unprecedented isolation." "We are independently rated the best locally and have been for some time. Of that I am rightly proud but we can always do that little bit better. We have come a long way, but there is still plenty of places we want to go. We are so grateful to everyone that has been part of the journey so far." Todd Neilson, Head Coach at Rochdale AFC Ladies recently met Bluebird Care customer Steven and care assistant Dreu, presenting Dreu with a card and flowers for her outstanding efforts over the last couple of years. Dreu is leaving Bluebird Care Rochdale to pursue her studies in nursing after delivering hundreds of hours of Care across her hometown of Heywood. Dreu commented: "I have worked for Bluebird Care for just under two years now; it has been amazing for me in building my confidence and getting my foot in the health and social care sector. It has also shown me that helping others is what I want to do as a career and my dream is to become a nurse."

Have you ever thought about a career in care? Bluebird Care Rochdale is always looking for kind, compassionate, reliable, dedicated individuals to join its amazing team. In return, the company offer full training, a friendly, supportive working environment and an extremely fulfilling role making a difference to people's lives. Here's what some of Bluebird Care Rochdale's current team members have to say about their roles... "I'm Georgia and I've recently returned to Bluebird Care Rochdale after maternity leave. I have worked here for over two years and have been given opportunities to support the business wider than the delivery of Care. Whilst I will still carry out visits in support of customers, I have been given the key role of recruitment for the company. It is a great opportunity for me to showcase additional skills and talents and assist the company to grow our team." "My name is Mobeen and this is a picture of me receiving carer of the month even though I only came to the company in August last year with my sister. I have not previously worked in care before but the support we are given from the online training and office is second to none. I really love my job and am really grateful for the opportunity." "Hi, I'm Claire and have been working for Bluebird Care since December 2020. This is a picture of me receiving the Carer of the Month award from Heywood and Middleton MP, Chris Clarkson. Having not previously worked in the sector before I am very grateful for the opportunity that Bluebird Care has given me and the support they give to all our team. I really love my job as I know it makes such a difference and have been actively encouraged to attain formal vocational qualifications with the company."

LIVE THEATRE RETURNS TO THE HEART OF ROCHDALE Hands up who has missed seeing a show over the past year and a half? Ok, Ok, quieten down, we have too! What’s not to love about live theatre? The excitement as the lights go down... the tingle as the orchestra strikes up... and then... relax and be entertained as a piece of unique theatrical magic begins. A wondrous escape from modern day troubles, a chance to be transported into a new, fantastic world for a couple of carefree hours. Fortunately, Rochdale Musical Theatre Company (formerly Rochdale Amateur Operatic Society) have persevered with virtual get-togethers, online and socially distanced rehearsals, to bring the uplifting show Legally Blonde the Musical to Champness Hall Function Room, Rochdale, in October 2021. This feel-good, all singing, all dancing romantic comedy is the perfect remedy for those who have been longing for a night out at the theatre. Rochdale Musical Theatre Company Chairman Dan Killeen explains, "All of the committee at Rochdale Musical Theatre Company (RMTC) are delighted that we are able to bring musical theatre to the centre of Rochdale through our partnership with The Champness Hall Trust. After all of the COVID challenges of the past 18 months, we are hoping that our production of Legally Blonde will bring lots of joy and laughter to the people of Rochdale. The cast and production team are working really hard to bring you a show that you will never forget. We look forward to welcoming you to the Champness Hall Function Room in October." Many may be familiar with the iconic movie, Legally Blonde, which was based on the 2001 novel by Amanda Brown and starred Reece Witherspoon.

Rehearsals are in full swing for RMTC's upcoming production - images: Sam Cooke

Originally premiered on Broadway in 2007, the musical production went on to be a commercial and critical success when it opened at the Savoy Theatre in the West End in 2009. The show picked up the Olivier Award for Best New Musical – and with high energy dance routines and toe tapping songs it is easy to see why! The story revolves around sorority president Elle Woods, who appears to have it all, however, Elle’s life is turned upside down when her boyfriend, Warner, dumps her so he can attend Harvard Law. Determined to get him back, Elle charms her way into the prestigious school. With the support of some new, loyal friends, Elle overcomes her struggles with peers, professors and her ex. Elle quickly realises her potential and discovers that she can use law for the greater good. With oodles of pink, a pinch of sass and bucketfuls of frivolity, this show is guaranteed to Ellevate (do you like what we did there!?) your mood and put a smile on your face. A show not to be missed! If you fancy a cheeky drink and something to nibble as you watch the show, then you will be glad to know that food and drink will be provided at Champness Hall Function Room by the Flying Horse Hotel. RMTC are proud to be working in partnership with Rochdale Style Magazine, What’s Occurrin’ Rochdale?, The Flying Horse, Legacy Dance Academy and Storage World. Legally Blonde the Musical runs between 1st - 9th October at Champness Hall Function Room, Drake Street, Rochdale. Please see website for dates and times. the arts

What's On in the Arts Readers of this column will be aware of All Across The Art's (AATA) belief in the efficacy of the creative arts in supporting individual and community well-being, involving both creative artists and their audiences. It is therefore wonderful to see our creative arts community springing into life as artists and arts organisations emerge from lockdown. Encouragingly there are signs that the time taken from us by the pandemic was not totally wasted as creatives have been planning and plotting to be part of a better normal.

Steve Cooke Arts Columnist

A shining example of this is the work being done by the Culture Team at Your Trust [formerly Link4Life] on a new Strategic Plan. The Your Trust’s Charity’s manifesto ‘We Are Your Trust’ identifies Culture as one of three threads that enable and empower individuals: "We’re here to support you to live your best life. We hope to inspire healthier, happier, creative people through our commitment to 'Your Culture, Your Health and Your Community'." Your Trust’s Culture Team delivers Rochdale Borough Council’s festivals and events, indoors and outdoors, across both Events and Programmes and Arts and Heritage. The team’s underlying aim is to appeal to a broad audience, working across a very wide range of cultural and creative activity, from open-air festivals to community events, theatre, entertainment, arts, museums, and heritage in outdoor spaces across the Borough and in three main venues – Middleton Arena, Heywood Civic Centre, and Touchstones plus the Arts & Heritage Resource Centre (collections store) – and beyond, through touring, collaborations, and networks.

Rochdale is known internationally as the home of co-operation so it very apt that ‘co’ is an essential element of the culture team’s desire to become an internationally recognised, and locally relevant centre for co-creation, co-curation, and the empowerment of individuals through involvement in creativity and cultural activity. Touchstones Rochdale has had a very successful make-over and has already provided us with four engaging, entertaining, and stimulating exhibitions such as: Grayson Perry – The Vanity of Small Differences, We Can Do It. War’s Other Voices and What’s Changed? In addition an eclectically stimulating series of workshops for creatives of all ages across the whole range of abilities.

Middleton Arena has reopened with a wide ranging programme including the much missed pantomime which has been announced as Peter Pan. The Arena has already re-stablished its go-to status on the stand-up circuit with five top performers this autumn: Jason Manford, Clinton Baptiste, Milton Jones, Dave Spikey and Ed Byrne.

The talented Rochdale group Sign Along With Us who finished second in last year's Britain's Got Talent will also be taking to the road for their upcoming fun-filled tour, the first stop being Middleton Arena stage on 26th September. Visit: www. yourtrustrochdale.co.uk

the arts Another arts organisation that is back up and running is Rochdale Antiques Society - one of our wonderful not for profit community organisations. They exist ‘To stimulate interest and appreciation of antiques and other works of art.' Each year the members of the society elect a committee. All officers of the society are volunteers. Any funds raised are used in the running and development of the society. The society does not trade in antiques and does not provide valuations. The society’s Felicity Guthrie informs me that they are delighted to have secured a wide range of speakers and subjects for its re-scheduled season. Wednesday 13th October will host the irrepressible and cheerful Adam Partridge, auctioneer and frequently seen on Flog It and BBC Antiques Roadshow. Entry fee for each meeting is £4 per person and Felicity commented, "We can’t wait to meet up again and hear fascinating, expert talks on Antiques". ROCHDALE ART PROJECT CELEBRATES HUMANITY THROUGH THE PANDEMIC Rochdale Town Centre recently welcomed a new art piece to Baillie Street – the ‘Radical Kindness Project’. We spoke to R. Khan, a local artist who was integral in the creation of the eye-catching artwork to find out more about the inspiring project: "Over the past year, Covid-19 has upended everything about our lives. We have lost so much, and yet people and communities have come together to support each other through it. "Key workers and the NHS, volunteers and communities have been at the heart of our crisis response and we want to mark and celebrate this. These volunteers and communities were the driving factor of creating the public art piece. "This piece of public art is a celebration of the community's contribution to the power of kindness and the vital work of neighbours, communities and volunteers." Action Together recruited three artists local to Rochdale, Oldham and Tameside to articulate a celebration of day-to-day kindness and mutual aid within the communities. R. Khan and Bushra Sultana were the commissioned artists for Rochdale. R.Khan said: "Through safe collaborative practice, we worked with local people to find the best way to mark the importance of this moment and the radical importance of everyday kindness. We spoke to participants via Zoom, in person - in a Covid secure way, to share stories and experiences. Some of their artwork and quotes were incorporated within the piece." The public art was inspired by the stories that were told and shared within the different communities of Rochdale. Within the piece there are numerous inspiring quotes such as 'to be there, is kind' and 'caring is kindness'. Various Rochdale landmarks can also be seen within the artwork such as Rochdale Town Hall and Rochdale Riverside. R.Khan explained: "The piece tells a story of the many acts of kindness, using participant quotes, visuals, and changing experiences that have affected many people’s lives during these unprecedented times. 40 | Rochdale Style

"Rochdale and its residents are unique, with the many communities it serves. The landmarks incorporated in the piece are recognisable and represent the whole of Rochdale. "Had I not created this piece with Bushra, I don’t think we would have interacted with so many different, wonderful groups and individuals, or known about the many acts of kindness that Rochdale’s citizens were doing every day. I was humbled, in awe and inspired by the various acts of kindness." The colourful art piece has already proven popular with members of the public. R. Khan said: "The community reaction has been phenomenal. Even when the work was being installed, before the launch, members of the public had said that they really like the artwork and it represents Rochdale very well. "It was fantastic to see so many people react positively to the Kindness artwork." Lucy Fieldhouse Community Arts Writer

SMP can also be used to disguise thinning hair in both male and female clients by around 50-70%. The colour shade is tailored to your natural follicle colour and is suitable for grey/white hair through to black. It is permanent and can either age with you, (it lightens over time) or you can have a touch up every 4-6 years. This would be dependent upon your lifestyle, metabolism, immune system and sun exposure.

UPLIFTING MAKEOVER FOR QUEENS PARK BANDSTAND

the arts

The iconic bandstand in Queen’s Park, Heywood has had a rainbow themed makeover.

In July this year, the Friends of Queen’s Park community group unveiled the new makeover of the well-loved bandstand, in collaboration with local artists Toni Lane and Victoria Ash. With a large rainbow and floral mural hand painted on the bandstand, this Heywood community space has had a positive reaction from local people. Friends of Queen’s Park chairperson Ellen Yates explained how they first came up with the idea: "At one of our monthly meetings, we discussed giving the bandstand a face lift because it was looking drab and dreary. We agreed we could give the building a facelift making an attractive effect ready for the opening of lockdown. I asked for permission from the council and it was agreed that we could go ahead.

"Two local artists (Toni & Victoria) hand painted the rainbow and the meadow of flowers, giving their time for free. People really got behind our project and donated towards the cost because we're a voluntary group and rely on donations. "The response was overwhelming as word spread across our community and people came to the park to watch the work progress." As well as having a beautiful new mural on the bandstand, the community group also decided to include a John Lennon Wall inspired area for children to decorate. The John Lennon Wall is an iconic street art welcomed wall in Prague, Czech Republic.

Ellen explained: "We wanted to give the children a section which is theirs; to give them some ownership and responsibility to protect the bandstand from vandalism." On 25th July, the park welcomed bands and local families to a Grand Opening event to celebrate the new makeover. Ellen said: "It was a lovely sunny day and it was wonderful to see so many families sitting on the grass enjoying the day!" If you are interested in booking the bandstand for a performance you can get in touch with the Friends of Queen’s Park on Facebook or contact the council.

Lucy Fieldhouse Community Arts Writer

"Because our park is so loved by so many people it was decided that we would put it to the people who use and love the park to offer us their help. The suggestion of a rainbow kept coming up repeatedly and we agreed it would make a beautiful feature.

How lockdown has changed our beauty habits

Pre-lockdown beauty trends included contouring, big volume lashes, full coverage foundation and lips. However, when masks became part of our everyday wardrobe, make up - especially lip colour - seemed insignificant and many of us began to wear less and less make up. Now skin has become the focus of our attention. Face coverings, stress and sleepless nights mean our skin may have become dull, lacking in radiance and often congested with blackheads and breakouts or the dreaded 'maskne'! Our priority within the industry now is to help you to get your glow back and reveal newer radiant skin.

Coined by Pinterest, "skinimalism" is all about embracing your natural skin with very minimal makeup. A good homecare daily routine with quality products suited to your skin type and regular facials is the key to getting your skin in the best possible condition.

Highlighter is a great must-have that can be added to accent the features of the face and bring light and glow to your complexion. Apply highlighter sparingly to cheekbones, forehead, browbone and cupids bow above the top lip - remember less is more.

Microbiome health has been a buzzword in the beauty industry for some time now - restoring and maintaining the natural balance of the skin. Your skin microbiome (also called skin microbiota) is an ecosystem of bacteria that live on the skin's surface, pathogens on the skin guard against harmful aggressors.

Due to the dressed-down approach to make up, in order to still look defined and groomed, we need to make it all about the eyes and brows.

When your microbiome is balanced, your skin looks and feels healthy. It is therefore essential to not over treat the skin with harsh peels or exfoliators and be mindful of the products we are feeding the skin to ensure they are working with the skin's balance. To achieve a glow, mild exfoliation can be used weekly and peels can be used monthly to renew and resurface the skin. Serums to hydrate and plump the skin are always a good idea - I would recommend hyaluronic acid by Juliette Armand. And of course, a moisturiser to restore the skin's balance and leave a dewy glow to the skin - I would recommend My Payot Jour cream. For a minimal make up routine, start with a cc cream or bb cream as opposed to a full foundation; this can be added to with the use of concealer if there are blemishes or darkness around the eyes.

There are plenty of options when it comes to brow grooming, from a simple shape and tint, to brow lamination and High Definition brows. Each treatment can define brows in their own way and each have their own merits. Shape and tint helps to add colour and define while brow lamination involves straightening and lifting the hairs using chemical solutions and relaxants, which allow the hairs to have more flexibility to move them into your required shape - they are then set into place and look groomed for up to a month. HD Brows is a bespoke brow treatment to create a brow shape that is completely tailored to suit your face shape. Brow hairs are tinted above and below the brow and allows the vellus hairs to be incorporated into your brow shape, meaning instantly fuller eyebrows. Around 80% of HD Brow clients are on a regrowth programme and will work towards achieving growth in certain areas. Specialised brow products can be purchased to help fill in any gaps naturally whilst awaiting re growth in those areas.

Moving onto the eyes... Options to define the eyes include eyelash tinting, lash lifts and lash extensions. Lash lifts are a great way to lift your own lashes and make them look longer with a slick coat of blue/ black tint. If you feel you’d like some extra definition, you could opt for a set of classic lash extensions. Lash extensions are individual lashes that extend each of your lashes in length and volume. All that’s left to do once your brows and lashes are groomed and defined is to add a coat of lip colour or a touch of gloss to add plumpness fullness and shine to the lips and a dust of bronzer to the cheekbones and forehead to warm the skin colour. A touch of blush can be lightly dusted onto the apples of the cheeks for a healthy glow. The 'no-make up make up' is definitely the stand-out beauty trend for 2021 and I feel that this will be the case for years to come too. Be kind to your skin and remember less is absolutely more. Glowing skin, is always in. history

ROCHDALE IN 1921 1921 – like 2021 - was a census year. For many Style readers the prospect of the publication of that year's census is very exciting. Census details are published a century after they took place and the 1921 census will be available early next year. This led to this writer thinking about Rochdale a hundred years ago. The Great War had finished in 1918 and Rochdale was recovering from the terrible losses of that conflict. This was before radio, television or the NHS. People's lives were harder and certainly shorter. Most children left school at just 14. What did Rochdale look like in 1921? First of all, the most noticeable difference was the transport. There was a well established electric tram network with routes to Bacup (via Whitworth), Heywood, Norden, Castleton, Newhey and Littleborough.

Town Centre c1920s 46 | Rochdale Style

Yorkshire Street c1920s

There were also through services to Manchester and other towns. These were usually double decker trams similar to Blackpool's heritage trams. There was little motor transport in 1921 so mostly bicycles and horse-drawn vehicles were seen alongside the trams. Things were slowly changing; in July 1921, Rochdale's old horse ambulance was replaced by the first motor ambulance. A company called Hills were advertising motor coach tours. Without the dual carriageway of St Mary's Gate, the main road from west to east twisted around the centre of Rochdale, hence the name: Yorkshire Street! Manchester Road was narrower and surrounded by mills and terraced housing. A century ago, our town centre had far more industrial buildings and housing close by. People generally lived and worked in the same area.

Broadway c1925

history Without the widespread use and ownership of telephones, the postal service was essential and some areas even had same day delivery! At this time, my grandmother lived in south Manchester and would send a letter in the morning to her sister in the north of the city announcing a visit for afternoon tea. The letter was delivered to my great-aunt by midday! So, some things were better! The next bit is hard to visualise; there was a railway line between Rochdale and Bacup. The line diverted from the main Calder Valley route at Milnrow Road and two viaducts took the trains over both Entwisle Road and Yorkshire Street heading towards Cronkeyshaw Common and beyond.! The line crossed over Yorkshire Street on a 60 foot span iron bridge and continued to the right of Rugby Road. This bridge was demolished in 1972. Nearby was Wardleworth Station which was far closer to the town centre than Rochdale Station and preferred by many shoppers and workers.

Yorkshire Street c1925

The early 1920's were a difficult time for many northern mill towns. Unemployment in Rochdale grew from 800 at the start of 1921 to over five times that number by the end of the year. "Short time" was the term used for reduced hours for the mill and factory workers; in June of 1921 nearly 25,000 employees had to endure this. Back issues of the Rochdale Observer have a wealth of information; there are advertisements for the larger shops and for remedies for such problems as back ache, sore throats and indigestion. There are match reports for both Rochdale A.F.C. and Rochdale Hornets. Billiards seems especially popular, a sport rarely seen these days.

Town Centre Esplanade c1927

But what about the town centre itself? There was, of course our Town Hall, along with the major bank buildings and Yates Wine Lodge. The main Post Office and the Regal cinema (now the Regal Moon) had yet to be built. The River Roch was in the process of being covered up in the town centre to allow trams and cars to move more easily and safely. There were already several cinemas showing silent films to packed houses. Many buildings were blackened with smoke. What we now know as Touchstones was then the home of the town's main library as well as its museum and art gallery. The main shopping streets were Yorkshire Street and Drake Street; Drake Street tended to have larger shop units and was wide enough – as nowadays – to have trams travel up and down. The main stores included Iveson Brothers on Drake Street, Crooks on Yorkshire Street and Hardman & Sons who had branches on both of these streets. Rochdale Market was in the town centre and sold meat, fish, fruit and vegetables and much more. The Co-op was also an important retailer.

There is only room here for a taster of Rochdale a hundred years ago. Why not book a visit to the excellent Local Studies Library at Touchstones? They have hundreds of photographs of bygone Rochdale, as well as the outlying villages. You can also access the censuses from 1841 to 1911. The library holds old street directories and town guides which give fascinating information. Key trends for your AW21 wardrobe by our new Fashion Editor Mollie Butterworth

Hi! I am so thrilled to be writing my first article as Fashion Editor for Rochdale Style Magazine. I have been working in the fashion industry for 4 years with experience in personal styling as well as owning my own retail store (Pretty Parade Boutique, Littleborough) and clothing brand (Sorelle The Label). The fashion industry is constantly moving forward and changing, so I am hoping these quick and simple ideas will result in a seamless transition into your autumn wardrobe. Here are six key trends to follow for your AW21 wardrobe; BRIGHT COLOURS are IN - They inject a much needed sense of energy and optimism into our daily lives. The key colour trends for this autumn/winter are blues, greens and reds. A pop of colour whether as an accessory, dress or a blazer will bring immediate zing to your look. FLORALS are also here to stay. That’s right, get ready to welcome muted florals into your wardrobe for AW. Expect to see printed dresses, blouses and even headwear. A floral headband is the perfect way to introduce this trend into your AW wardrobe.

FUZZY - i.e the softest // fluffiest fabric you can imagine! You're probably thinking at this point, have I lost it... Nope (not yet anyway)! Fuzzy knitwear is a must for your AW wardrobe. The fashion gods have been listening to us. If you're an advocate for comfort this one is for you, whether it’s a cardigan or jumper make sure you jump on this trend. OVERSIZED CARDIGANS are back once again and they are a MUST. If you had told me this time last year I would be a cardigan lover I would never have believed it. But I have well and truly fallen for this trend. BOTTOMS are making a comeback Dresses have been the biggest trend for sometime, and thankfully here to stay, however bottoms are coming back and a key piece for your AW wardrobe, especially a ‘good pair’ of jeans. Denim will forever be a favourite mainstay of a fashionable wardrobe. PRINTS & SLOGANS are the perfect way to create your very own unique style. Choose a bright quirky print or perhaps a slogan that makes you smile or inspires you. A slogan tee or sweatshirt is an easy staple and will never go out of fashion. Perfect for everyday or dressing up for the weekend. MY TOP TIPS Shopping with local and small businesses benefits YOUR style. We have some amazing businesses in the area that will help you choose the key trends that suit you and your lifestyle the best. There are no set rules for fashion, just tips and advice, if something works for you go for it but don’t feel pressured to do something that doesn’t. Lastly, be you, be beautiful, be confident. Rochdale Hornets aiming for one last push to Championship as club continues to grow Rochdale Hornets continue their play-off push in the 2021 Betfred League 1 season and will be aiming for a return to the Championship in 2022. Matt Calland’s side recruited strongly ahead of the 2021 campaign, including the signings of rugby league cult hero Fuifui Moimoi, Wales international Gavin Bennion and former Swinton half-back Rob Fairclough. Add that to the likes of club captain Sean Penkywicz, Shaun Ainscough and Ben Moores who were already signed with the club, Hornets were gaining positive publicity ahead of the season start in a campaign that includes teams like Barrow Raiders, Doncaster and Workington Town. However, a mixture of long-term injuries and Covid-19 has seen the squad impacted throughout the season and head coach Calland has struggled to name a consistent 17 throughout the campaign, but they remain around the play-offs. Injuries have seen chairman Andy Mazey, who took over the club alongside his board of directors through the 2020 season, bring in the likes of former England international Rangi Chase, winger Shaun Robinson and experienced forward Paul Brearley into the mix. Sat in sixth spot in the League 1 table, Hornets have just four games (at time of print) to cement a place in the top five to keep their Championship hopes alive and that continues this weekend at North Wales Crusaders. "The comeback against Hunslet was a strong show of character from the group to come back from 32-16," said Mazey. "We now need a big week as we head to League 1’s form team in North Wales Crusaders this weekend. "We have had some good results recently, especially the 44-8 home victory over Doncaster, and we’re now having some key players return to the squad as we push for the play-offs.

"Rob Fairclough has shown his skills and leadership since returning from injury and we’re still yet to see Rangi Chase return since breaking his arm in his Hornets debut against Crusaders. We’re hoping to have him back and fit for our play-off push, alongside powerful forward Fuifui Moimoi." While on the field results seem to be improving, off the field the club and its Foundation has been working hard to spread the game of rugby league while also keeping kids active during the summer holidays. The Foundation team hosted two full capacity summer camps at the beginning of the summer holidays with more than 100 children attend across the two weeks, including the supply of food and kit thanks to the club’s partners. "We remain excited and incredibly focused on forward planning to ensure progression on and off the field" added Mazey. "The Foundation team have been doing some incredible work while the club also has strong women and wheelchair teams representing Hornets. "The club had officially announced that it would host England’s only warm-up test match ahead of the Rugby League World Cup 2021 against Fiji, as part of the club’s 150th anniversary celebrations. "While that game is in current discussions due to the postponement of the World Cup until 2022, I believe it shows the progression being made by the club. "The board came to the club excited, and that excitement remains, and we are all looking to grow and develop with the massive help from our coaching staff, team, the board, key stakeholders, sponsors and just as importantly, the fans." MARLENE SKYDIVES FOR 70TH With very little chance to celebrate her 70th Birthday and Golden Wedding anniversary due to Covid-19, Marlene Taylor decided what better way than to jump out of a plane! Especially if she did it for a good cause and "what better cause than our local hospice".

TREKKERS BATTLE THE RAIN TO TAKE ON YORKSHIRE THREE PEAKS

Definitely an experience to remember, Marlene is a huge inspiration and, together with her Facebook Birthday Fundraiser, raised a fantastic £843.75 towards care at Springhill.

Despite the elements being against them, 30 Springhill supporters put on their waterproofs and kept smiling to complete the 24 mile Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge. The challenge is to complete the walk within 12 hours and qualified and experienced guides from local outdoor adventure company Mountain Edge were there to support the group every step of the way. Together the group has raised over £11,000 with many walking in memory of someone very special. The date of next year's Springhill Hospice Yorkshire Three Peaks has already been set for Saturday 30th July 2022. AIDAN COMPLETES ULTIMATE 10K CHALLENGE FOR JOLLY JOSH Earlier this year, Aidan Gleeson, gave himself the ultimate challenge of running 10K every day for 50 days, raising an incredible £1625 in aid of Rochdale charity, Jolly Josh. Jolly Josh provides dedicated peer support and safe spaces for children, families and carers of children with disabilities, complex and special needs. The charity was founded by devoted mum Carole Kelly in September 2017, exactly one month after her son Joshua James passed away at just 15 months old. Carole said the charity is "very grateful" for Aidan’s efforts, adding: "The funds will all be spent on the construction of our 'Place To Call Home'."

Carole commented: "The construction of our 'place to call home' is progressing swiftly, with thanks to businesses and groups who have supported our charity by providing their services, in addition to members of the public who have supported fundraising efforts. Our centre now has electricity, fire alarm and security systems, the walls have been plastered and a first coat of paint has been applied; the ceiling tiles are in the process of being fitted, as is our kitchenette and lighting. The outside of the building has been re-cladded and we’ve now got an accessible, electric entrance door. "In the near future, we can begin to plan for final fittings and furnishings such as the specialist resources and equipment which will enhance the accessibility, inclusion, support and positive experiences for our families when they visit the centre."

Pictured: Aidan Gleeson (left) with James Kelly, Joshua's Daddy and Jolly Josh volunteer.

The charity's 'Place To Call Home' is a much needed multifunctional venue in Rochdale to enable families who have a loved one with additional/complex needs, disability and/or Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities to 'Connect Support and Thrive'. It will also incorporate a 'Changing Places' facility (to provide toileting with dignity) and hydrotherapy pool.

Keep up to date with the charity by following Jolly Josh on social media and visiting: www.jollyjosh.co.uk

BLOOMING LOVELY GATED ALLEYWAY IS PICK OF THE BUNCH The winners of the 14th 'Alleyways in Bloom' annual competition have been announced as residents celebrate another success. Run by Rochdale Borough Council, the competition which received increased entries this year asks residents who have burglary reduction alley gates installed to share how they have transformed their alleyways into a blooming delightful space. Reigning champions, residents of Shaftesbury Avenue in Smithy Bridge took the judge’s vote for the fourth year running, receiving the first prize of a £50 Bowlee Garden Centre voucher. Richard Simpson, along with neighbours on Shaftesbury Avenue has created a beautiful tranquil space for residents to sit and enjoy, even adding additional features including recycled old tyres as planters. Richard said: "Residents are thrilled to have won the competition again. We have added even more this year, yet we’ve still managed to create a welcoming colourful space for neighbours to come together for a cup of tea or a glass of wine."

The runner-up prize of a £25 Bowlee Garden Centre voucher went to residents of Edenfield Road in Norden, who have also won the competition previously. Green-fingered residents Bernice Clark and Sue Thomas have been maintaining and enhancing the alleyway in Norden for many years making a huge impact in a small space. Councillor Susan Smith, Rochdale Borough Council’s cabinet member for communities and co-operation, said: "Gated alleyways are not just for preventing burglary, they can bring communities together to create a shared vision and provide a safe haven for neighbours to get together and children to play safely. "It has been wonderful to see such blooming delightful entries and seeing ideas flourish. We hope to see even more entries next year." More than 600 schemes are in place across the borough and funding is available for new gates to be installed. For more information and to apply visit www.rochdale.gov.uk/alleygating.

LOCAL CHARITIES ARE 'BETTER TOGETHER' The new Charity and Community Hub, housed in the ex-Marks & Spencer shop on Yorkshire Street Rochdale is now known as the 'Better Together' building. The building was officially opened on Saturday 24th July by the former Chief Prosecutor for the North West of England and the present Chair of Hopwood Hall College, Nazir Afzal OBE.

There was a good turnout showing support for the project, everyone was provided with refreshments topped off by this amazing 'Better Together' cake which was supplied by one of the Charity partners NESTAC. The two main charities linked with the project were represented by Shaylesh Patel of Temporary Use Aid/Rainbow Rising and Yusuf Bashforth and Junaid Rahim who are the founders of the Global Educational Trust. Yusuf said: "Allah says in the Holy Quran; 'We have made you into Nations and Tribes so you may come to know one another'. To truly know someone, you have to learn so much about them and in doing so you learn so much from them. This the very ethos of the Better Together and Rainbow Rising Brands. There will be 12 local and national charities using this retail space in the weeks and months ahead, giving them the opportunity to have presence at the heart of the town centre to promote themselves and the good works they do."

Other special guests included, Rev Charles Kwaku-Odoi Chief Officer of the Caribbean and African Health Network (CAHN), Maqsood Ahmad OBE Chief Executive Officer of the British Muslim Heritage Centre and Professor Erinma Bell MBE who co-founded the Community Alliance for Renewal, Inner South Manchester Area (CARISMA).

The building will be open 6 days a week between 10am and 4pm and everyone is encouraged to visit and play your part in supporting what can only be described as a very positive addition to the town.

Tweeting about the event, Maqsood Ahmad said: "Pleasure to say a few words this morning at the opening of 'Better Together Building' in Rochdale. Fantastic initiative bringing diverse communities groups together under one roof to support the most vulnerable within our society."

ROCHDALE COMMUNITIES SHARE EXTRAORDINARY STORIES A team of talented local artists has spent the month of August working on an ambitious new project, 'Stories We Tell', gathering extraordinary stories of Rochdale communities to build promenade style audio walks that bring the streets to life. The project, commissioned by Touchstones, and produced by Breaking Barriers centres around the diverse communities of Deeplish and Milkstone, where over fifty languages are spoken. It explores the ways in which people’s memories, life events, experiences are embedded in the very walls and streets of a place, rooted in its soil. Parvez Qadir, Creative Director of Stories We Tell, commented: "Stories We Tell is a really personal ambition of mine to do something in my hometown and the area that I grew up in, Deeplish. I've always had this ambition to do a project around technology and community voices to allow people to listen to stories that are at the heart of that community. The people we have interviewed have been so open and brave in sharing their personal stories and we have interviewed an eclectic mix of voices from in and around Deeplish. I wanted to use binaural sound technology and projection mapping as a great way to share those stories and for audiences to have an immersive experience in the heart of that community."

The team has interviewed artists, community leaders, teenagers, a lady whose family were one of the first Chinese families to settle in Rochdale and people from Albania, Africa, Pakistan, Myanmar, China and Italy. All of them have somehow found themselves living in Rochdale, and calling Rochdale home. All of them have a story to tell. From settling in Rochdale and setting up a successful business, to starting as a shepherd boy in Pakistan and becoming the Mayor of Rochdale. "The project has provided people with a chance to talk about their journey here, their hopes and dreams for their town. It is a love letter to Rochdale." The final show will be happening on the w/c 25th October, on the streets of Deeplish. Keep up to date with the exciting project on Instagram: @rochdale.storieswetell

AMBITIOUS TEENS ENJOY HOPWOOD HALL'S ANIMAL ACADEMY Teens flocked from far and wide to attend the exciting new Animal Academy at Hopwood Hall College.

In the process it cemented their ambition to become zookeepers, veterinary nurses and pursue other animal-focused career paths.

The programme ran across three weeks, with each weekly cohort enjoying incredible animal adventures at the Middleton campus.

Attended by teens aged 13 – 16, Animal Academy saw more than 60 people journey from all across Greater Manchester.

Just some of the weird and wonderful creatures they had the opportunity to care for included wallabies, meerkats, snowy owls, potoroos and armadillos. Much of the wildlife homed there is extremely rare and endangered – and from as far afield as Madagascar!

This includes 14-year-old Ethan, who attends West Hill School in Tameside. He said: "I seriously had the best time – there were so many cool animals and I really learned a lot. I want to do it all over again – I wish I could be there every day. It was awesome and so interesting!"

It was the perfect experience for those who want to work with animals as they were able to tap into the expertise of the college’s staff who have heaps of international zoological experience.

Sponsors who made these places possible included Crystal Doors, Yelloway, Sign UK, Reed, DDA Projects, XMA and Tenet Education Services.
