welcome... Dear Readers,
Welcome to our winter edition! This issue is packed with happy news about our town and its wonderful people. It was heartwarming to see so many people turn out to greet Little Amal at the start of November, as the nine-year-old refugee girl in the form of a 3.5 metre puppet brought an important message to the borough. Read more about her visit to Rochdale in this edition. We're excited to have an exclusive interview with actor, Tom Varey, who features on our cover. After starting off on the local amateur stage, Tom is now a well known face on our screens, starring in The Village, Ackley Bridge, Game of Thrones, No Offence and most recently, BBC drama Ridley Road. We also have an exclusive chat with popular Rochdale AFC forward, Danny Cashman to find out how he's settled into the club. Our new Mental Health Editor, Brad Gartland discusses how to look after your mental health at Christmas, while Kirsty Rigg explores how to improve both your physical and mental health over the winter season.
Rochdale welcomed Little Amal on 2nd November
Rochdale mum, Catherine Aspinall, shares some fantastic ideas for family days out this Christmas and Steve Cooke has put together a comprehensive guide to what's on in The Arts. There's also a Shop Local Gift Guide, Good Food & Drink section and a festive guide to Rochdale Town Centre. There's so much happening across the borough this season. From festive markets and pantomimes, to Christmas postboxes and grottos. You can even 'sail with Santa' on Hollingworth Lake! Plus, Planet Earth replica 'Gaia' arrives at Number One Riverside on 20th November until Christmas Eve. A huge congratulations to the team at Rochdale In Bloom for their many gold awards which you can find out about in this edition. Our community writer, Lucy Fieldhouse, talks to In Bloom award winner, Asrar Ul-Haq about his incredible work for the Amaani Initiative and Masjids in Bloom.

TOM VAREY
Talented actor, Tom Varey, first started out on the local amateur stage, performing with amateur societies in Rochdale, Mossley and Whitworth, before making a remarkable rise to fame. In 2010, Tom headed to London to join the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), but before finishing his studies, he had already secured the role of Bert Middleton in the second series of popular BBC period drama "The Village, starring alongside John Simm and Maxine Peake. He went on to star in popular series such as Game of Thrones, No Offence, Death in Paradise and Ackley Bridge before his most recent lead role as Jack Morris in BBC four-part drama Ridley Road (currently available on BBC iPlayer), alongside an award winning cast. Style caught up with Tom to discuss Ridley Road, his Northern roots, his love for football and his dream role... oh, and penguins...

Style: You filmed Ridley Road during lockdown – what was that like? Tom: Yeah, we filmed in Manchester when it was in the highest tier restrictions. But we were all properly grateful to be at work and to have something to do. I only really met the people I was in scenes with, so there were loads of the cast that I just never got to meet. I would have liked to meet Rita Tushingham. I met most people on the Zoom thing…! The hotel they put us up in had a football pitch on the roof so I spent a lot of time up there, I was quite happy. It was like the apocalypse and I was on my own on the roof kicking a ball about. Incase readers haven’t seen Ridley Road yet, how would you describe the story? And is your character Jack Morris based on a real person? So there never was a Jack Morris or a Vivien Epstein but they’re based on real people who were in part of a group called the 62 group; an anti-fascist group that would disrupt the far-right movement. It’s a thriller set in the swinging sixties and it’s a piece of history that’s not really been told at all. I had no idea about it. It feels like a really important show… Yeah, I think it’s something that never really goes away; anti-Semitism and discrimination in all forms is still very apparent in today’s society. Sarah Solemani who wrote it didn’t want the characters to use any language that was just specific to that time period. She wanted the language to be stuff that you could still hear nowadays. And it is. You still have those voices around now and those voices still have a platform as well, which is kind of crazy.
Photo: Ridley Road, BBC Pictures / Red Productions
Who first inspired you to take up acting?
Do you still live in London?
My drama teachers at college, Wynn and Rob, were brilliant. Wynn was the one who really nudged me towards drama school and then I was like, “oh right blimey, maybe I’ll actually think about this”. I learnt so much from her classes.
Yeah I’m actually living in London with Aggi who played Viv and Hannah who played Elise in Ridley Road. We were all looking for a place at the same time so that was good. I’ve been really lucky throughout all my jobs because I’ve always made really good friends with people - they’ve all been really nice people so I hope that continues.
We’ve heard that you had to be a penguin when you first started at RADA, please tell us more?! Haha yeah! So, we had to study an animal and then be that animal for many hours. So we did penguins, pigeons, monkeys… You study their weight and how fast they move, what direction they move, everything. I mean, once you’ve been a penguin your inhibitions are down and you’re up for doing anything; you’re not embarrassed anymore. So that’s good.
What do you miss about the North? I miss my family and friends and going to United games with my brother. I miss Am Dram and all the various societies I did shows with – I look back on it with a lot of fondness. Do you think amateur groups are important in developing future talent? Yes 100%, they’re so important. I owe a lot to the Am Dram world. I was dragged to a drama club at 12 years old by my mate Lee! If he hadn’t dragged me to that I don’t think I would ever have pursued a career in it. I was rubbish at first; I was just laughing at everything. I couldn’t be serious. But then I just gradually grew to love it. I stayed with it until I left for drama school at 19! And then I got very serious… with my penguins and my pigeons! What would be your dream role?
Photo: Ridley Road, BBC Pictures / Red Productions
I could say Doctor Who or something but that’s too obvious isn’t it. I’m well into new writing, so something really interesting and new and cool! I’d like to play a boxer or something where I have to learn a skill. Or a real person, that would be fun. (continued...) Rochdale Style | 5
(...continued)
Have you ever been starstruck? My first role in The Village was alongside John Simm, Maxine Peake and Juliet Stevenson so I definitely felt really lucky to be working with them. But drama school had set me up for that kind of life because we always had actors in to talk to us. So I tend not to get starstruck by actors, but I really do get starstruck by footballers or musicians. Do you watch yourself on TV? Yeah I do. Not obsessively! I’ve only watched Ridley Road once. It’s weird, I’m not at the stage where I’m fully comfortable with it - I don’t know if that will ever happen - but I feel like I have to watch it otherwise I ain’t gonna learn anything. So I watch it but all the while I’m always thinking, “oh god, is that what my face was doing then?!”. Do you have any advice for aspiring actors? Enjoyment is a big part of it and a very underrated part. Always remember why you got into it and never lose that passion even when times are hard.
What do you do in your spare time? I paint portraits! My style’s not very realistic - it’s quite cartoony but I like it. So I do that - it helps me to relax but also it’s very messy, so there’s some heart-stopping moments painting when you’re living in rented accomodation! I’ve started learning French, that’s fun. I’m learning how to say ‘your’ - ‘votre’. J’ai mal à la tête - I’ve hurt my head. All the phrases you need really! Haha, it’s very early on in the process! I play football a lot too. I’m playing tonight actually with my team – we’re called MatesLadsFC! Who would be on your dream 5 a side team? Oh right… in goal I’m having David Seaman ‘cause he seems nice. But like, prime David Seaman. He had lovely hair. And then, oh blimey, Rashford’s in there ‘cause I love him, and David Beckham. That’s four of us ‘cause I’m gonna be in there as well. Right, ok, probably need a defender… who’s at the back… Rio! Yeah, that sounds nice doesn’t it. Ruth Parkinson

GAIA
SANTA’S GROTTO AT TOUCHSTONES
BOOKSTART BEAR CLUB
From 20th November until Christmas Eve there will be a huge, spectacular, floating, rotating replica of the Earth at Number One Riverside in Rochdale Town Centre.
On weekends throughout December, Santa will be gracing Touchstones in Rochdale with his presence! For £10 per child you get a 45 minute experience, including storytime, a craft activity and a gift.
Autumn has seen the return of Bookstart Bear across Rochdale Borough Libraries and we couldn’t be more excited.
We went to see Gaia back in 2019 when it was in Liverpool Cathedral and it really is quite a sight to behold. The light and sound artwork by Luke Jerram is accompanied by family friendly activities and events.
Book your places at www.yourtrustrochdale.co.uk/whats-on/events/ santas-grotto and don’t forget to wear your Christmas jumpers!
Bookstart Bear involves story time, singing and the playing of instruments (loudly)! Children get a “passport” when they start attending and collect stamps each week in order to get a certificate. It is all VERY cute, but it also provokes a love for books and for reading from a very early age. Times and venues differ from week to week in order to include more libraries across the town, so keep an eye out on the Eventbrite website to book a place - www.eventbrite.co.uk (search 'Bookstart Bear')
Visit rochdale.gov.uk/events for more details.
Catherine Aspinall, a local mum of two lively children and an equally energetic pug, shares her top family day out ideas. The Festive Trail through Strid Wood is a lovely 2 mile winter walk (one mile each way) complete with Christmas themed exhibits to find and pose with plus mince pies and hot chocolate available to purchase at the end!
It is STUNNING in all seasons, but on selected weekends in winter they light it up in rainbow colours and it looks more amazing than ever! As well as a brightly coloured monastic ruins (what else could you want?), you will find a fantastic woodland play area and a nativity trail to complete!
Although the slots for visits to Santa’s Cabin might have sold out, you can still buy tickets to just enter the grounds and what a jolly time you will have! FIREGROUND CHRISTMAS OPEN DAY
SAIL WITH SANTA
On Saturday 11th December, Fireground will host their ever-popular Christmas Open Day between 10-4. There is free entry to the yard, where there will engines on display, but small charges will apply for the attractions, which will likely include mini fire engine rides, small fairground attractions and appearances from Father Christmas himself!
This year you will find Santa sailing around Hollingworth Lake on the Lady Katherine! For £10 per child and £5 per adult you can climb aboard the floating grotto, have a trip across the water, post your Christmas list in the elf post box and get a gift from the man himself (adults get a hot drink instead… and you might need it!).
You should definitely also go inside the museum whilst you are there, where (amongst other things) you can dress up, slide down a pole and walk down a Victorian street!
Various dates and times are available from 2nd December 24th December. Book tickets at: www.yourtrustrochdale.co.uk/whats-on/ events/sail-with-santa Afterwards, why not enjoy the two mile walk around the lake and try and find the new, very beautiful “fairy tree” sculpture (clue: it’s near the old navy cadets hut).
SANTAS REINDEER & POST BOX This little gem is situated at Hatters Farm in Middleton. A beautifully decorated Christmas scene, complete with a post box in which to send your letters to the main man! There is also a resident herd of reindeer, which you can feed by putting money in the honesty box and taking a bag of food. We parked on Oaken Bank Road (OL10 2LA) and walked along this street before turning right onto Stott Lane (M24 6XL). This is pretty much just a stony path and you will find the festive fun just a short walk along here! If you want to park elsewhere (or just want to keep wandering after your visit) you will find Hopwood Woods very close by, with streams to throw stones in, bridges to cross and tree stumps to climb on! DANNY CASHMAN
Rochdale Football Club welcomed forward Danny Cashman on a season-long loan from Coventry City, in August. By September, the fan favourite had been voted Dale Trust Player of the Month after a rip-roaring start to the season. The talented 20-year-old joined Brighton's Academy at the age of 12, progressing through to the Under-18 and Under-23 sides. He was a regular in their Premier League 2 side in the recent season, scoring 11 times and creating 11 more in 35 appearances.
After departing the AMEX Stadium in the summer, he signed for Coventry on a three year deal, the first of which he is spending with Dale. Style caught up with Danny to find out how he has settled into the club, his hopes for the season and what he really thinks about the Jack Grealish comparison... 18 | Rochdale Style
Style: How are you settling into the club? Danny: Yeah really enjoying it… it’s been easier than I thought it would be. Obviously, the boys have been class and the gaffer and coaching staff have been really good. It’s been a good learning curve so far! And how are you finding life up North? Manchester is quite the same as London and if anything I think it’s a bit better. I’ve settled in really well where I live and there’s lots to do. So on my days off I’m keeping myself busy, even just doing stuff with the boys, like we might go and play golf or something which is quite nice to do. How did it feel to be named Player of the Month in September?
How do you feel about fans often comparing you to Jack Grealish?
Who do you support? I’m a Chelsea boy.
It’s always a nice feeling to get Player of the Month but I know my performances can be better and I’m nowhere near where I know I can be. There’s a long season ahead so hopefully I can find my feet even more and push to where I think I can be, and help the team more importantly.
Haha, it's one of those where I wear a headband and we look a bit similar in terms of what positions we play, so I knew it was going to happen. It’s funny at the end of the day. If I was a Dale fan myself, I’d probably be saying the same thing!
We’ve heard you’re a good cook – if you could have any three guests over for dinner who would they be and what would you make?
What’s your personal aim for the season? I want to set high standards for myself and be one of the best players in the team in terms of my numbers, my assists, my goals. I want to be up there, not just in the team but in the league. What’s been your most memorable moment at Rochdale so far? Probably the Burnley game - that was a really good experience, not just for me but for the club and the boys. It was good to test ourselves. Other than that, the Tranmere game when I scored the winner that was a good feeling. How have you found the step up from academy football to the first team? Academy football is a lot of technical play where the ball is always on the floor, whereas we are now fighting for points and at the end of the day there’s fans here to support you and people’s jobs are on the line. So there’s lots of things which come into play with first team football but I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. I think I suit it and I’ve settled in well; I think the fans have taken to me very well which is another really good factor.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received since your move to Rochdale? Work hard! I’ve had about 17 appearances now and I’d say the majority of them have been off the bench. You’re never settled in first team football as it changes very quickly and one minute you’re in, one minute you’re out. It’s about being humble and making sure you’re doing the right things day in-day out, no matter who is making the decisions.
David Beckham, Michael Jordan and Cristiano Ronaldo. I’d have to make a pasta dish... linguine! Do you have any advice for young footballers? In terms of players that aren’t in the academy, I’d just say to keep working hard. In terms of players within the academy, never ever rush into something whether that’s a contract or joining a club. Some of my regrets so far would be not taking my time with things.
How old were you when you first got into football?
Were you always certain about coming to Rochdale?
I started quite late. I joined a Sunday league team because I felt left out with my mates and went from there with people coming to games and seeing me play. I got picked up from Crawley when when I was 11, then that folded because they couldn’t keep the academy running and I got picked up from Brighton about a week later and I was there for 8/9 years… and now I’m at Rochdale!
Yeah, my agent sat down and we spoke about the club and I knew a few players who’d been here before and they’d spoken highly of the club. Rochdale had come down which wasn’t ideal for the club, but I saw that as an opportunity for me to be part of something really good this year and something we're still aiming for. I want to help this club get promoted back to League One.
Who’s your footballing idol?
Ruth Parkinson
If I look up to a player it’s Messi because he’s the best player in the world and especially because he’s not the tallest player!

STUDENT MURALS BRIGHTEN UP THE DALE
Supporters attending Rochdale AFC’s recent home games may have noticed a touch of colour added to the back wall of the Sandy Lane end. Students from the local Falinge Community Hub have designed and painted a mural, paying tribute to both Rochdale Football Club and Rochdale Hornets, as well as thanking the NHS and displaying antiracism messages. The mural also contains a tribute to the Wonder Wall on Sandy Lane, and features paintings of rows of supporters watching on. Jack Donnelly from Rochdale Connections Trust, who headed up the project, said: "We wanted to give something back. The Football Club are a huge part of the local community, which is why we chose to paint the mural here. It was a fun project to take on. We had a long meeting about what we wanted to put on each part of the wall, and it’s turned out great!" Fourteen young people, aged between 7-23 years old were involved in the project, most of whom were either taking part in their Duke of Edinburgh Award or were from the Princes Trust. Councillor Rachel Massey, who has been heavily involved in the project, added: "I was thrilled to be able to link up with this creative group of young people in our community to engage their creativity, help build their confidence and show them what we can achieve when we work cooperatively together with our great football club in the heart of Rochdale. "The colourful crowds show people getting back together after Covid... The students chose to make the faces of the crowd grey as they felt it was important not to show any particular race or ethnicity."
20 | Rochdale Style
"Since the project each young person has grown tremendously some have applied to University and got in and some have part time jobs. It has been an absolute pleasure working with each of them and I can’t wait to see what is in store for each them next on their journey." Dale's Commercial Director, Frances Fielding, said: "As a club, we're delighted to have teamed up with the Falinge Community Hub. The students have done a brilliant job in turning what was once a blank and dull space, into a colourful and vibrant backdrop, and I want to say a big thank you to them. "We will certainly look to work on more projects with them in the future!"
LOOKING AFTER YOUR MENTAL HEALTH AT CHRISTMAS BY BRAD GARTLAND With an insight from Paige Gorton, Listening Lounge Lead Coordinator at Rochdale and District Mind Growing up, as with many people, Christmas was the highlight of my year. Travelling to see family, all the social events, no school, the huge Christmas dinner, not to mention the presents under the tree that I’d been waiting weeks for. It seemed like the most perfect time for everyone. Why would anyone find Christmas hard? As I’ve grown older, I’ve realised how difficult Christmas can be for everyone, and I say everyone because we’re all human. We can all get stressed, can all feel low, and can all overthink, and Christmas can be a time which heightens these emotions. No matter who you are, it’s so important to care for yourself around this time. 22 | Rochdale Style
The purpose of this article is to help you realise that you’re not alone in how you feel, as well as introducing helpful tips to benefit your mindset. Paige Gorton (Listening Lounge Lead Coordinator at Rochdale and District Mind) has also kindly provided her advice to support yourself and others during this period. To start, I’ve highlighted some of the reasons why people may find Christmas challenging and how best to overcome these challenges: When you’re told that Christmas should be one of the happiest times of your year, and you already feel low – Feeling low can be hard enough without being told you ‘should be happy.’ This can result in us putting pressure on ourselves, leading to added stress. Firstly, we have enough stresses in our life to start putting more on ourselves; remember that it’s okay not to be okay.
So, if you feel down around Christmas, this is completely normal and there are people that feel the same way. Please talk about how you feel, remember these emotions will pass and better days will come. Not having time for yourself – With so many social events planned, finding time for yourself may be a challenge and these events can become very draining. Scheduling in time for yourself is so important; I can’t stress this enough. But, when you schedule in the time, make this a priority as the biggest relationship is the one with yourself, but it’s also the one that can be most easily forgot. Once you start to make time for you, this helps to build a positive relationship with yourself, which in turn enables positive relationships to be built with other people. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup.
A loved one may no longer be with us – This is something very close to my heart and to be quite honest, made me not like Christmas for a few years. The reality of a lost relative/friend can be even more apparent at Christmas and it can make the time of year increasingly challenging. There is no right or wrong way of dealing with this. Some people may like to keep with traditions, and some may want to change completely (I’ve done a mixture of the two). For me, the most important thing is that I’ll always reminisce on the happy memories with my dad. We may compare our reality to the media’s portrayal of a ‘perfect Christmas’ – Of course, we can all be guilty of comparing our reality to other people’s highlight reel (especially on social media), but this most often leads to feelings of inadequacy, low self-esteem, and can make us feel unhappy with our life. The first step is to understand that someone’s hand-picked highlight reel only shows <1% of their life; and we never truly know what that person is going through behind the scenes. Everyone goes through struggles and hardships, but most people just never post about them. My advice is to limit your time on social media, spend time on what matters most to you, and be kind to yourself.
What Christmas means to me, and my words of advice Paige Gorton, Rochdale and District Mind "I love Christmas, but after losing all my grandparents, this time of year becomes difficult as they’re no longer there for our family events. Instead, reminiscing about the happy times with them brings me comfort. "We’re often told that Christmas is the season of giving, but we give so much to others we often forget ourselves. Treat yourself to something small for all that you have overcome this year, go out into nature, do something you enjoy, and be kind to yourself. "Speak to your friends and family and tell them how you’re feeling. Be open and honest; acknowledge when you feel sad and speak about it. You do not know who may be feeling the same!
"If you check in on a loved one and they feel overwhelmed about Christmas, listen to what they have to say, reassure them that you’re there, and discuss with them the possibility of seeking support from mental health organisation’s such as ones described at the end of the article." Paige is Listening Lounge Lead Coordinator at Rochdale Mind, which provides a safe, comfortable, and confidential space that is open out of normal working hours to support anyone over the age of 18 with their mental health and emotional wellbeing. If you’d like to attend the Listening Lounge at Mind (3-11 Drake St, Rochdale OL16 1RE), their doors are open: Monday & Wednesday 6.30pm – 9.30pm and Saturday 1.30pm – 4.30pm, and their contact number is 01706 752338. If you are to take at least one message from myself and Paige’s insight, please talk and be open about how you feel, be kind to everyone you come across as their stress may be heightened at this time and remember to make time for yourself. Christmas can have many different meanings for so many people and there is no right or wrong way to spend it. Wishing you a safe and healthy Christmas, Brad Gartland Mental Health Editor

PINK FLAMINGOS ARRIVE ON SECRET BEACH IN MIDDLETON A flock of pink flamingos are the newest residents to arrive in Greater Manchester. The mesmerising birds – collectively known as a ‘flamboyance’ – are homed on a secret beach at Hopwood Hall College and University Centre in Middleton. While they’re believed to be the only flamingos in the county, the group certainly isn’t lacking company in their lodgings. They instead join an array of rare and wonderful creatures being studied by learners of all ages who are completing qualifications in Animal Care. In fact, the birds even share an enclosure with a troupe of friendly wallabies and have neighbours such as meerkats and armadillos.
Those who undertake a course often go into a variety of exciting careers, including veterinary nursing, zoo keeping and husbandry.
The greater flamingos – which are generally found in Africa and Asia Minor – can grow to more than 5ft in height and live for 80 years.
Julia Heap, Principal and CEO of Hopwood Hall College and University Centre, said:
There are currently more than 30 living on the hidden beach, but this number could grow as soon as 2022, as it’s expected that the birds will begin to breed next spring – offering a fascinating experience for those who work with them every day.
“Our Animal Care courses are already very popular, but right now it feels like our new beach is the best-kept secret in Greater Manchester!
The students who care for them can be as young as 16-year-olds in further education to adult learners.
“The flamingos live in the most tranquil setting and just seeing it is a great reminder not to underestimate all the amazing things happening in Middleton.
Earlier this year the college also introduced its new ‘Animal Academy’ programme and began allowing school-aged pupils to spend a week caring for their the 700+ animals – eight of which are classified as endangered.
“We’ve no doubt that these fascinating birds will make for a truly unique learning experience and ensure our students go into a wide range of dream jobs.”

MASJIDS IN BLOOM
HOW ONE ROCHDALE FAMILY'S EFFORT LED TO REGIONAL FLORAL COLLABORATION Asrar Ul-Haq and his family started the Amaani Initiative with the aim to tackle climate change. The family led initiative aims to encourage the community to engage in activities that reduce carbon emissions, combat climate change and enhance the beauty of the local environment.
Five mosques in Rochdale took part in Masjids in Bloom. Each Masjid [mosque] put on beautiful floral and plant displays as part of the Royal Horticultural Society’s North West in Bloom Competition. Supported by Rochdale Council of Mosques, the five masjids – Neeli, Central, Golden, Jalalia and Bilal were visited by the In Bloom judges in August. Bilal mosque took the top spot at the awards ceremony on 4th November, after judges were wowed by the attention to detail, environmental efforts and splash of colour.
Over the years the Rochdale family’s initiative has had an extremely positive impact on the local community. They have planted over 400 trees in Kirkholt with Rochdale Boroughwide Housing, engaged with various organisations across the borough and the initiative also inspired ‘Masjids in Bloom’. 26 | Rochdale Style
A special trophy for outstanding contribution was presented for the very first time to Asrar Ul-Haq. The Bill Blackledge MBE Chairman’s Award was presented to him in recognition for his work in the local community and Masjids in Bloom. Roy Down, Chairman for Rochdale In Bloom, commented: "Asrar thoroughly deserves this prestigious award for his amazing achievements with the project. It's a real pat on the back for him. He doesn't go around broadcasting everything he does, so it's nice that it has finally been recognised that Asrar is making a real difference in the borough."
Style talked to Asrar to find out all about Masjids in Bloom and the work his family are doing with the Amaani Initiative… Style: What made you want to start the Amaani Initiative? Asrar: Firstly, it’s a part of our religion to look after the Earth. Islam teaches you to look after the environment. But what kick-started it was that I’d heard so much about climate change and we discussed it at home with the children [I’ve got two adult children]. My father had passed away as well, so I said: "I’m going to plant a tree and that’s going to regenerate some of the oxygen. It’ll be in his memory, but it will also be good for the climate." My kids turned around and said: "If that’s all you’re doing for the climate then you’re wasting your time; you’ve got to do something more substantive." That started the discussion off, and then we came up with the Amaani Initiative and the idea to engage with other organisations. I would give them a tree as a gift and then ask them, on receiving that gift, that they plant one more tree, so that would automatically double our family’s effort. And from that if I could cajole them into planting more trees, then that would be a plus, plus, plus! It was a family initiative; a family discussion. It’s been going for about three years now and started with olive trees! The Bible and the Quran talk about olives and olive trees and they’re relevant to both religions. I bought some olive trees, gifted them to churches and got a positive reaction. Then from that I asked Rochdale Council of Mosques to pay for trees to be planted in the church yards. And then I got the Imam from the mosque and the Reverend from the church to plant the trees together, so not only was it about planting trees, it was about all working together to achieve the same objective.
What made you want to start Masjids in Bloom? Masjids in Bloom started as a spin off from what we were doing with the Amaani Initiative. When I started gifting these olive trees to the mosques, I got them to plant a lot more than just one tree! Then I asked them to buy some hanging baskets as well! I was then approached by Rochdale in Bloom to link in with them and work together. I said: "We’ve got five mosques involved at the moment, this is going to grow, how about creating a separate section called Mosques in Bloom – Masjids in Bloom?" Rochdale in Bloom found that exciting; they spoke to North West in Bloom who found it really exciting, who then spoke to Royal Horticultural Society who oversee all the In Bloom competitions who really took interest in this. Rochdale Council of Mosques were instrumental in supporting the Masjids to partake in Masjids in Bloom and very keen to support the green agenda. In Bloom doesn’t just look at flowers and trees, it looks at what you can do for the local community, what you do for charity and what you do with your green fingers! What was the community reaction like to the Masjids in Bloom? The community were quite excited by what was going on. In fact, on Mere Street, because they'd heard what we were doing, all the neighbours got together and wanted to be part of the In Bloom competition. So, that was an immediate spin-off. On a national level, I’ve had other mosques contacting me wanting to be a part of it and asking how they can get involved in Masjids in Bloom. There’s been a lot of interest in it and hopefully next year there will be even more interest. It's beneficial to everyone because we’re talking about the environment; we’re talking about saving the Earth. Lucy Fieldhouse

THE "LONELINESS" PROJECT WHICH
HAS MORE IMPORTANCE THAN EVER When local woman Alex Hoskyn founded the Chatty Cafe scheme back in 2017, she had no idea of the importance it would turn out to have.
This extraordinary project has not only encouraged those experiencing loneliness to reach out and connect with new friends, but it has now grown from a small local scheme to one which has gained national recognition, with 1,400 venues nationwide. In Rochdale, you can find a 'chatter and natter' table at numerous locations around the town centre, as well as surrounding areas such as Milnrow, Balderstone and Castleton.
Her idea to tackle loneliness by setting up special 'chatter and natter' tables in local cafes was one which, although already very powerful, would go on to become a survival tool for those coping with pandemic-related isolation. As we all know, loneliness is a word which has hung heavy in the headlines over these months, and not without reason with over 3 million UK adults reporting to feel lonely "often or always". 28 | Rochdale Style
So what exactly is a 'chatter and natter' table? You only need to step into Costa Coffee in Rochdale to find out. In a nutshell, designated tables are set up with a sign on them, on which anyone can take a seat if they are happy to talk. This simple but effective idea has led hundreds of people to making new friends and, as some of them have reported, an overall increase in their emotional wellbeing. And it didn’t stop there. When the lockdowns took hold and people were forced to stay at home, founder Alex Hoskyn launched a telephone and online service where volunteers could speak with those who wanted to connect from the comfort of their homes.
Kirsty Rigg Features writer
Group sessions quickly developed and people from all over the country started taking part, and there's not a strong community of people who regularly connect through the scheme. Operations Manager Abi Murray said that the winter months can be a particularly hard time for those experiencing loneliness, and that the scheme is open to anyone who would like to join in Rochdale and beyond. She added: "The main inspiration behind the scheme was to offer a solution to those who are feeling isolated or lonely, both because of the pandemic but also before it too. That feeling of loneliness goes further than people think - it can be so debilitating that it can even cause further health problems and even physical problems. "We want to offer people a solution to this modern world of isolation by giving them people to talk to, in places they can access easily. The winter months are particularly tough for people who are experiencing loneliness, especially around here where it's typically grey and dark most of the time. People are going outside less and feeling less connected, which can really have an impact on their overall wellbeing."
The Chatty Cafe scheme has gone on to gain national recognition, and has won numerous awards including the Prime Minister’s Points of Light Award January 2020 and the Innovating for Ageing Award 2019. More recently, Alex Hoskyn was among those named on the Queen's Birthday Honours list 2021. She has now been awarded an OBE for her efforts in tackling loneliness. She said: "When I found out I had been awarded an OBE I was in complete shock, and I still am. It is a huge honour and wonderful to be recognised in this way. "The Team and I have seen time and time again how detrimental loneliness can be on a person and how simply having a conversation can make someone go from feeling invisible to visible. We will continue striving to create opportunities for human interaction to tackle loneliness and social isolation on a national scale. "This award has given us a real boost and I am incredibly grateful for the nomination."
GET INVOLVED The Chatty Cafe Scheme now offers virtual "chatter & natter" meetings hosted online weekly and/or one to one phone chats, as needed, between members of the public and Chatty Volunteers. Virtual meetings may also prove to be key in areas where geographical distances simply make physically meeting up impossible or in situations where people have to or prefer to stay at home. Research shows the success of telephone befriending programs and how chatting to another person can alleviate loneliness. Telephone befriending can: 1. Reduce loneliness and social isolation 2. Increase connections 3. Increase feelings of self-worth and improve mental health 4. Increase confidence FIND A CHATTER AND NATTER TABLE IN ROCHDALE The tables are open to anyone - those on their own, couples, friends, carers, mums, dads, grandparents and babies.

TOY APPEAL HOPES TO BRING JOY TO ROCHDALE FAMILIES Rochdale Borough Council is now collecting donations to this year’s Christmas Toy Appeal, which helps make sure local children who are less fortunate have presents to open on Christmas Day. The annual appeal, organised by the council’s staff-run 'Giving Back' charity for the past eight years will be accepting donations until 10 December. Cllr Rachel Massey, cabinet member for children’s services and education at Rochdale Borough Council, said: "Last year we were blown away by the response from people and businesses in what was already a really difficult year. People’s generosity to the appeal goes a long way, we know it’s a challenging time for many but if you can buy an extra present then you’ll really bring some festive joy to a local young person." If you can help, all you need to do is donate an unwrapped, new gift suitable for a child up to 16 years-old and leave it at your local library or Your Trust leisure centre. Gifts for babies and teenagers would be especially welcome as fewer were received for these age groups last year.
Council staff, who distributed a record 6,000 toys last year, will make sure they reach the borough’s less fortunate children in time for Christmas Day. Council policy advisor Helen Walton (pictured below), from the Giving Back charity, said: "The Christmas Toy Appeal is a way of spreading a little festive magic, ensuring children who have had the hardest of years have a gift to open, taking the pressure off their parents.
"Christmas will be a struggle for thousands of families but we still want to make sure that every child in the borough wakes up on Christmas morning with presents waiting for them and with your help we will do everything we can to make this happen. We ensure all gifts go to local homes who need them most and I know from experience how much joy your thoughtful gifts will bring." Organisers are asking people to consider donating a more environmentally friendly gift where possible. You can also order a gift online and send it straight to the appeal. The address is: Giving Back - Christmas Toy Appeal, Rochdale Borough Council, Number One Riverside, Smith Street, Rochdale OL16 1XU. The appeal is organised by the council’s 'Giving Back' charity in partnership with Action Together, Rochdale Football Club, Your Trust, Petrus and Rochdale Town Centre Management.

What's On in the Arts We all need things to look forward to as we strive to create a new normal in our uncertain world. Creativity and culture can have a particular role to play in making us individually and collectively develop resilience to the challenges we face and may face in the future, in building the identity and prosperity of our town, in creating stronger communities, and inspiring change. Engaging with creativity and culture also can allow us to reflect and comment on society, to better understand our own lives and those of others.
Steve Cooke Arts Columnist
Everyone can be creative, and each of us has the potential to develop our creativity further. Taking part in creative acts such as painting, singing, photography or writing delights and fulfils us, and helps us to think, experiment, and better understand the world. In our borough there are many opportunities for both: to be creative, and to experience high-quality culture. Museums play an essential role in helping us understand and shape culture. They connect us to the past and encourage us to think about the future. The Rochdale Pioneers Museum will be celebrating the 177th anniversary of the opening of The Rochdale Pioneers Store on Toad Lane on Tuesday 21st December from 2pm. To celebrate, the museum will be running an animal handling Christmas adventure in the learning loft (by Zoolab). This adventure is about 'Zola the Christmas Elf' and is all about a Rat who, with the help of their animal friends, saves Christmas. Booking required. They will also be serving Pioneers Soup and the museum will host several craft stalls. Visit: www.co-operativeheritage.coop

REVIEW: LEGALLY BLONDE THE MUSICAL In early October, Champness Hall Function Room played host to its first musical in over twenty years - and not just any musical - the ultimate feel good, insanely pink 'Legally Blonde' by Rochdale Musical Theatre Company (RMTC). The high energy show we didn’t know we needed. Triple-threat Leonie Picariello was fabulous as Elle Woods and rarely off stage. Throw in some lightning-speed costume changes (in every possible shade of pink) and all singing and dancing numbers and she gave an outstanding performance in a demanding lead role.
Photo: Ruth Parkinson
Unbelievably, the production marked Jess Bray’s directorial debut of her first ever musical and it was a credit to her. Alongside directing, Jess impressed as the suitably snooty Vivienne, really showing off her powerful vocals at the end of ‘Legally Blonde Remix’. Zac Grenier played an adorable, geeky Emmett Forrest and took everyone’s breath away with his rendition of ‘Chip On My Shoulder’. Cesca Astley showed great comedic timing and stage presence as the sassy but oh-so-lovable, Paulette. Steven Cheeseman was suitably arrogant as Warner while Terry Banham gave a convincing portrayal of the pompous, manipulative Professor Callaghan.

The Delta-Nu girls and Greek chorus were bursting with energy and sass, with Annabelle Taylor (Pilar), Jenya Robinson (Serena) and Isabelle Melling really standing out. Choreographer Nikki Wilkinson made full use of the unique, tiered space available with some dazzling routines. Fitness guru Brooke Windham was played by Maria Markland who managed to simultaneously skip and sing with ease in ‘Whipped Into Shape’ – a captivating, energetic opener to the second act. The supporting cast were fantastic, with some taking on two or three roles. Ben Maguire and Michael Thompson received one of the biggest laughs of the show as Nikos and Carlos in their brilliant rendition of ‘Gay or European’. Another priceless routine was the Irish dance between Paulette and love interest, UPS delivery guy Kyle (Dan Killeen). The Professors’ hilarious dance moves (Chris Robinson, Dan Fielden and Dave Edwards) also deserve a special mention. The lighting design by Jamie Jackson wouldn’t have been out of place in a West End production; neither would the fantastic band, led by talented Musical Director, Chris Addington. One final mention goes to the dogs - Bruiser played by the very fluffy Teddy and Rufus played by Eric - both a massive hit with the audience. A huge congratulations to everyone involved in this production. It’s exciting to see the Champness Hall being brought back to life and live theatre finally returning to the heart of Rochdale. 38 | Rochdale Style

ROCHDALE FOODIE LAUNCHES DREAM COOKBOOK Rochdale foodie, Richard Rodriguez, first started his Instagram journey as a hobby, back in 2016, developing and sharing simple, delicious family recipes. He's since gained over 22,000 followers, appeared on television and has now launched his debut cookbook 'Richard's Family Favourites!' just in time for Christmas. I love cooking but I especially love seeing my followers trying out my recipes. Having my very own cookbook has been a dream for a long time and finally it is a reality." 'Richard's Family Favourites!' includes 75 easy recipes to enjoy with family and friends and is now available to buy online at www.familyhomecook.co.uk. You can find more easy family recipes like the one below, on Richard's website or follow him on social media @familyhomecook.
LAMB, LENTIL & POTATO CURRY Not all curries have to be blow your face off spicy, although I love a spicy curry. This curry is mild, fragrant and will fill your kitchen with a beautiful aroma, but if you do want that kick add some chilli powder to taste. This recipe can also be vegetarian if you remove the lamb and you wouldn't miss it one bit. I also reckon this curry would make a brilliant alternative to shepherd's pie if you stick some mash on top and bake.
INGREDIENTS (Serves 4 / Prep time: 15 minutes / Total: 1 hour) 500 g minced lamb 1 medium onion 1 medium carrot 1 tbsp of minced ginger garlic paste 1 tbsp of tomato puree 500 g tinned new potatoes, cut in half 400 g tinned lentils, drained 400 g tinned chopped tomatoes 1 tikka masala paste pot 1 tbsp of garam masala 1 tsp of cumin powder 1 tsp of ground coriander 1 handful of fresh coriander, roughly chopped keeping the stems and leaves separate 600 ml of chicken or lamb stock 2 tbsps of natural yoghurt Put the onion and carrot into a food blender and whizz, this will save you chopping time. Then in a large pot, fry the onions, carrots and coriander stems with a pinch of salt and a good splash of oil. Cook over a low heat for 10 minutes giving it a stir every so often. Add the ginger-garlic paste and fry for a couple of minutes, then followed by the minced lamb. Turn the heat to high and cook for 15 minutes. As the lamb cooks it will release water so just keep cooking till that’s all gone. Add the spices and continue to fry for a couple of minutes, the kitchen will smell amazing. Next into the pot is the tomato purée and the tikka masala paste and cookout for a minute before pouring in the lamb stock and tin tomatoes. Bring up to a boil then reduce to a low light and simmer for 20 minutes. Add the lentils, potatoes and simmer for another 10 minutes. To finish the curry, stir through the yoghurt and remaining coriander leaves, check for seasoning and serve immediately with some rice and flatbreads.

Beauty: Lashes are BACK! Whether it’s a lash lift or extensions, lashes are back and better than ever! Take your pick, will it be a lash lift and tint, a set of classics or Russians? Maybe you’re confused as to which application would be best for you, so here goes...
Lets start natural, with the LVL lash lift... An LVL LASH LIFT is a lash lifting procedure that creates of length, volume and lift with your own natural lashes. No mascara. No extensions. No maintenance. It’s the perfect natural everyday look. Lash lifting is a great alternative to lash extensions and the perfect way to enhance what you already have, whether your lashes are long, short, thick or stubborn. This treatment will create the look of longer, fuller lashes that make your eyes appear more open and youthful as well as saving time in your morning routine. So, if you’re looking for a long-lasting, low maintenance, natural looking eyelash enhancement then the LVL lash lift is for you. If you're looking for a little more then why not try a lash extension? CLASSIC LASHES are a a semi permanent individual lash generally made from synthetic material such as mink or silk which are then taken and applied to each one of your single isolated eye lashes, thus extending them in length and thickness. Classic lashes are super lightweight, comfortable and look very natural. If classics aren’t enough for you and you feel you'd like a little more, or maybe even a lot more, guess what? Russian lashes can add up to 6 or more lashes to every ONE of your isolated lashes! 44 | Rochdale Style
Sounds crazy doesn’t it? Six Russian lashes are so lightweight and featherlike they weigh the same as one classic eyelash!
Lashes should be maintained with infills every 2-3 weeks with a reputable lash technician in a fully insured salon.
RUSSIAN LASHES are made into fans, these volume fans are indicated with the terms 2D, 3D, 4D, 5D, and 6D. This marks the number of lash extensions being used in a fan placed on to the real lash. 2D means 2x synthetic lashes in the fan, 3D means three lashes and so on. Anything over a 6D is classed as a Mega Volume set.
If you decide to have them removed, don’t pick them out, rather book in with your local salon for a removal where lashes will be carefully removed without causing damage to the natural lashes.
When using the Russian Volume technique, the lash technician fans them out to give the illusion that more lashes are growing from one lash hair follicle giving a dense lash line with fluffy ends; this is why Russian lashes are such a popular choice. As with all extensions whether hair, nail or lash a certain level of maintenance and upkeep is necessary in order to maintain them. Lashes can cross over during sleep and all they need is a quick brush now and then to get them back in shape. Treat them gently with care, try not to sleep on them, sleep on your back for the first day to ensure that the glue isn’t tampered with. Stay away from chlorinated pools and heat treatments such as steam rooms, saunas and sunbeds for at least 24 hours. Avoid oil-based eye makeup and makeup remover.
If you’ve had eyelash extensions before you’ll know that they are a serious confidence boost. Every woman needs this experience at least once in her life. The best thing is you can go mascara-free and your eyes will still stand out. Plus, you’ll wake up each morning looking amazing! Why not add a lash treatment onto your next appointment? WINTER BLUES IN ROCHDALE?
THE ANSWER COULD BE ON YOUR DOORSTEP It's the dead of winter, we're in the north of England, and the days are about as short as they get. There's not much that can be done to beat the winter blues when you live in rainy Rochdale, right? Wrong, apparently... According to some local fitness and mental health experts, Rochdale’s location is quite the ideal place to live if you want to tackle that winter sluggishness. Not because we have glorious sunshine as we all know that’s not the case, but because we live amongst some of the biggest "mood lifters" - which are scientifically proven to boost our health, mood and overall well being. No, we're not referring to the pubs (though there's no shortage of good ones in Rochdale), what we’re actually referring to is...our glorious, largely unmatched, outdoor beauty spots. Many of the hidden gems in and around the borough tend to be overlooked by the average Rochdalian, especially when the weather is less than inviting. But with physical fitness being so closely connected with mental and emotional health, one has to wonder what they truly have to offer in terms of banishing those glum moods. 46 | Rochdale Style
According to professional fitness and strength coach Andy Lavery, who runs his own gym in Rochdale, living in the borough has major benefits for beating the winter blues. A simple stroll around Hollingworth Lake, or a wander through Healey Dell, can be enough to kick-start those feel-good chemicals that ultimately change how we feel - making it much easier to tolerate those dark and cold days. Andy, who founded Apocalypse Training Systems in Rochdale, has been helping local people reach physical fitness since 2017, and runs kids' classes to help keep the younger generation more active. Also a keen walker and fan of the local outdoors, Andy says that our local green spaces could be used more for tackling mental health issues, as well as the common seasonal blues that some of us can experience at this time of year. He said: "There are tons of reasons people struggle more in winter. Obviously the darker nights and colder weather makes people less likely to move their bodies, which can lead to a decreased mood.
Kirsty Rigg Features writer
"But then, if you look at the time of year as well, it’s a time of increased stress with things like work deadlines, holidays, pressures at Christmas and so on. "To top it all people are generally out and about less and it can be a lonely time." He added: "It's great to join a gym community that only wants you to win, but you can start by arranging a walk with a friend. "Living in Rochdale, we're surrounded by some amazing walking routes with views that would match anywhere else in the country, and for most are less than a 10 minute drive away." According to the NHS, a brisk, 10 minute walk can improve your stamina, burn excess calories and make your heart healthier, all whilst keeping your mental health in check. But nutrition also has a huge part to play. David Leeming who runs The Health Food Centre in Rochdale town centre, says it's worth being mindful of the vitamins and minerals we are using throughout winter to keep our levels up when it’s needed the most.
He said: "Improving one's mental health through diet involves a multitude of things, eliminating junk such as excess sugars, alcohol, any food groups that interfere with the body's natural detoxification pathways, so gut health is crucial.
TOP TIPS FOR BEATING THE WINTER BLUES BY ANDY LAVERY - APOCALYPSE TRAINING SYSTEMS
"Minerals such as zinc are so important, as is anything that boosts our feel good hormones, some of which are manufactured in the gut. Supplements such as multivitamin are a useful adjunct to the diet. He added: "The winter months require a targeted approach to good health, so reducing sugar is good, as it can lower white blood cell count. Vitamins such as C and D work well, as well as zinc. Herbs such as elderberry and echinacea are good additions to the natural medicine cabinet, as they are anti-viral. "Probiotics are things everyone should consider, as their effect on immunity is well documented. This is an enormous subject, and we pride ourselves at the Healthfood Centre in recommending the right products for the individual." You can find the Health Food Centre on 2 Cheetham St, Rochdale OL16 1DL, Monday to Saturday between 9.00 and 17.00. Kirsty Rigg
3 - FIND A TRIBE Whether it's an online community, a walking group, a gym class or coaching group, you can find someone to help keep you accountable for your new lifestyle and create new, positive habits that promote the life and wellbeing you deserve. 4 - GET ENOUGH VITAMIN D
1 - MAKE A REPEATABLE SLEEP ROUTINE
I rarely promote supplements and vitamins, but I make sure I take vitamin D tablets when daylight is shorter than usual and I can’t get outside in the sun…or what there is of it at this time of year. There is a good amount of research linking vitamin D to reducing depression and anxiety too.
Use a phone as a reminder to start winding things down at a certain time each evening. I have a reminder set on my phone at 9:15pm to start winding down. That means the phone goes to 'do not disturb', TV volume is reduced and so on. 2 - WRITE TO-DO LISTS As someone who has suffered anxiety in the past, writing a list of things I am doing today is single handedly the most productive thing I’ve included in my daily routine. It gives me focus and structure, the lack of both of these were (and still are) the route of my anxieties. I recommend not making a list bigger than 3-5 main jobs for the day. For me, if I have more to-do then they have to wait for another day.
Photo Mark Jolly
5 - TAKE UP A CHALLENGE! Try something like a couch to 5k challenge, or learning to lift weights. It can even be learning to play a musical instrument, it doesn’t matter. Take on something that excites you… then implement point 3. Photo: Hollingworth Lake by Linda Glossop

KEY TRENDS FOR COSY SEASON by Style's Fashion Editor Mollie Butterworth
Mollie here.. I'm back with my second article as Fashion Editor for Rochdale Style Magazine and this time I am here to share some of my favourite styling tips for the season ahead! While it may feel like we have been in the depths of autumn for several months all thanks to the British Summer, the season has actually only kicked off a few weeks ago and we couldn’t be more excited to be indulging in the cosy season! The fashion industry is everchanging, so I am hoping this mini breakdown will help you shop confidently whilst heading into the busiest months of the year.
MEGA KNITS - This is the perfect trend for the comfort enthusiasts out there, and also those still trying to navigate themselves out of your lockdown wardrobe. Knitwear is of course always a big trend as soon as autumn comes around, but for this A/W it is bigger than ever, including maxi’s, endless layers, cosy accessories - there’s no limit to knitwear this A/W.
FOUR KEY TRENDS TO FOLLOW FOR THE SEASON AHEAD;
SPARKLE, SPARKLE - For those who are ready to go all out after last year’s quieter affair this trend is for YOU. Let me introduce you to the sparkle, sparkle trend. This doesn’t have to mean sequins, it just means that one style that makes you go “Can I really wear this?” before you remember YES, yes you can. Think glittery, flared, shimmery and in all honesty anything that is going to make you feel amazing!
PUFFERS - The puffer jacket is set to have a real moment this A/W - it is the ultimate winter warmer. Unlike previous years, this year's puffer trend is all about keeping it simple and wearable. From a short boxy style to a statement maxi puffer to team with all your dresses and jeans. For me the bigger the puffer the better, I like to feel like I am walking around in a sleeping bag... or is that just me?! Staying warm has never been so chic and easy.
WINTER BOOTS - Is there anything more exciting than a fresh pair of winter boots, after all they are going to be your ally during the colder winter days. After the monotony of our lockdown wardrobes, there has been a shift to more brightly hued pieces; in boot terms this has translated to comfort, practicality and ease, this is going to have a starring role in your day to day life. The chunky ankle boot is a must for this season, polished enough to team with all your dresses but will pair just as easily with jeans!
MY PERSONAL TOP TIPS - Accessorise, accessorise. It’s so easy to add a little something more to any outfit, whether it's a chunky scarf to add a pop of colour to your outfit or a statement necklace to add that extra touch to your out-out outfit. My advice to you is to invest in classic winter essentials then add something fun to your wardrobe with your accessories! Lastly, shop early, shop small, shop happy! See you again soon, Mollie x Instagram @mollieb_

Lantern Parade photos: Alan Hamer Photography
LITTLEBOROUGH UNDER THE SEA Littleborough Arts Festival held three events this year, under the theme 'Littleborough Under the Sea'. Through this, the festival aimed to engage young people and families from the local area in a conversation about the climate emergency.
The first two events held in June and August were storytelling events, with storyteller 'Creeping Toad'. The August event included outdoor artworks in Hare Hill park which linked to the stories, by artists Mary Naylor, Maryanne Royle, Natalie Sharp and Alison Cooper.
Using visual arts, music and stories, the festival invited people to imagine what Littleborough would be like if it were under the sea, with narratives of mermaids, fin-boys, the Hollingworth Lake monster and Sybil the stranded whale calf.
The incredible Lantern Parade took place on 15th October with children from Littleborough Community Primary School and Holy Trinity Primary School. Local families gathered to hear the Lantern Parade story which focused on Sybil the whale calf, who was stranded in Hare Hill Park.
52 | Rochdale Style
The festival will conclude with a final performance of the Story of Sybil the Whale at the launch of the Gaia exhibition on Saturday 20th November 4-6pm at The Butts, Rochdale.

SPRINGHILL HOSPICE: WHAT'S ON THIS CHRISTMAS The last 18 months have been very challenging for everyone to say the least. Here at Springhill we are looking forward to the festive period where we can add some fun and exciting events to help people celebrate and get into the Christmas spirit once again. LIGHT UP A LIFE will be returning as a virtual event launching on Saturday 4th December. The virtual service gives you the opportunity to remember your loved ones and dedicate a light in their memory. All dedications will be available to see in our virtual Book of Lights which will be available through our website. This years’ virtual service will include music readings and poems for you to reflect, remember and celebrate the memories of your loved ones. The service will be streamed on our website and social media pages at 6pm and will remain available throughout December for you to watch at a time that is meaningful to you. On Friday 10th December you can take part in our annual WEAR YOUR WOOLLIES DAY. Get your best Christmas jumper/ cardigan/socks/hats at the ready! Get your colleagues, friends and family involved and help raise money for Springhill Hospice. All we ask is a donation of £2 per adult and £1 per child and the rest is up to you! Why not make a day of it and have a best dressed competition, a Christmas bake off or even a festive quiz! Our annual SANTA DASH is back! This year we have a new location, Queen’s Park, Rochdale. Join us on Sunday 12th December - grab your Santa suit and get jogging, walking or sprinting around Queen’s Park with our 2km or 4km route. We can’t wait to see you all dash-ing around! To start off the New Year, our CHRISTMAS TREE COLLECTION service will return. After the success of the collection back in January we will be taking to the road again to collect your Christmas trees between Friday 7th – Sunday 9th January 2022. For a donation to Springhill you will not only be helping the Hospice provide care and support to our patients and their families but you will also be helping the environment. All the trees we collect will be recycled and made into chippings that will then be used in the Hospice gardens. Our CHRISTMAS BAKING KITS are now available to buy. They make a great gift for Christmas or are a perfect festive baking activity for you and all the family. For just £20 you can choose either a Christmas Cake kit or a Gingerbread House kit. Each one comes with all the dry ingredients you need to make something tasty for the festive season! Hurry though as we have limited stock available! CHRISTMAS CAMPAIGN Christmas is always such a special and cherished time and even more so for those under the care of Springhill Hospice. This year we have launched our Christmas Appeal with the help of our Associate Specialist Palliative Care Nurse, Nathan, and one of our wonderful Hospice at Home patients, Jackie, to raise vital funds towards making every moment count for those suffering from a life-limiting illness this Christmas. We ensure that treasured memories are made and patients and their families can spend quality time together, whilst receiving the best possible care. And this is only possible with the incredible support of our local community. If you would like to support Springhill’s Christmas Appeal, please visit www.springhill.org.uk/christmas-campaign 56 | Rochdale Style

ROCHDALE MASTERS RUGBY LEAQUE GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH Since forming in July of this year, Rochdale Masters Rugby League have already welcomed 50 members registered the Rugby Football League, played 10 fixtures plus attended a National Festival in Blackpool in September. And the Club is going from strength to strength with more new members joining their sessions each week. Carl Abraham, Founder of the club, commented: "Historically, the borough has had numerous successful amateur Rugby League clubs and I rightfully believed the town deserved a platform to encourage players aged 35+ the opportunity to get back playing and supporting grassroots clubs whilst having fun and making great memories on and off the field. "With the full support of the committee at Rochdale Mayfield I formed Rochdale Masters' - a club that allows players of all past and present clubs the opportunity to come together and represent the town of Rochdale in the greatest game of all. "The Masters concept has really taken off in Rochdale, we are averaging between 25-30 players of all ages (and even have players in their 70's), physiques and abilities at our weekly sessions. Weekly "training" is conducted at the home of Rochdale Mayfield ARLFC, bringing individuals back together in a familiar environment whilst establishing a habit of regular physical activity and a fantastic opportunity to catch up and reminisce about the old days."

The club is sponsored and supported by BRAND X, The Stephen Gartland Foundation, Rochdale Hornets Sporting Foundation, Jolly Josh, OnePT, Direct Flooring & Beds and Health 'e' Hut. Carl said: "The support that local businesses and groups have given the club since forming is massively appreciated by everyone involved and the players are grateful for all the kit and equipment that we’ve been able to purchase through their generosity." Local charities The Stephen Gartland Foundation, Jolly Josh and Rochdale Hornets Sporting Foundation have been chosen as the club’s nominated charities. All monies raised throughout the season will be equally split and donated to these worthy causes. Follow @rochdalemasters on Twitter or join the Rochdale Masters Facebook group for details on how to get involved and to keep up to date with news and events.

DAZZLING GOLD DISPLAY AT NORTH WEST IN BLOOM AWARDS The borough of Rochdale has pulled it out of the bag yet again in this year's North West in Bloom Awards after judges deemed floral displays and outstanding parks the pick of the bunch. After what can only be described as a tough year, the council and community volunteers were back scooping a very impressive 16 gold awards across the borough, presented by Bernard Pendleton, chairman of North West in Bloom at an awards ceremony at No1 Riverside, Rochdale on 4 November. Heywood collected 5 of these, which included a gold medal for 'town centre'. Heywood in Bloom group took the award for 'large town' and the Friends' of Queen's Park took gold for best 'large park'. An extra surprise was a well-deserved overall award for 'best feature in a public place'. The judges were impressed by the centre of Heywood, including the memorial gardens and recently upgraded space outside the Civic and Phoenix centres. The Old Police Station and Business Centre also took gold in the 'small commercial' category, with gold again awarded to Heywood Distribution Park in the 'large commercial' category. Other accolades included 8 gold medals across Rochdale, Pennines and Norden, with Rochdale also claiming gold in the ‘town centre’ category. The Rochdale in Bloom group were judged gold winners for the best 'small city', alongside Middleton in Bloom who achieved a gold medal in the same category, with more awards being announced for Middleton in the coming days. Rochdale in Bloom also achieved the 'best town centre' in the North West. A new entry this year was the Masjids in Bloom initiative. Supported by Rochdale Council of Mosques, the five masjids – Neeli, Central, Golden, Jalalia and Bilal were visited with the Bilal mosque taking top spot. A special trophy for outstanding contribution was presented for the very first time to Mr Asrar Ul-Haq, from the Amaani Initiative.
The Bill Blackledge MBE Chairman’s Award was presented to him in recognition for his work in the local community and Masjids in Bloom.
Luca Higginson - Young Bloomer
Councillor Billy Sheerin and Imran Aslam also were awarded 'outstanding contribution to North West in Bloom'. The Baum pub in Rochdale and Nutter’s restaurant won gold for the 'small accommodation' award. Healey Dell Heritage Centre and Tea Rooms took the gold top spot for 'small tourist attraction' and Norden's Jubilee Park claimed gold in the best 'pocket park' category again.
Heywood in Bloom - Best Feature in a Public Place
Norden in Bloom, which entered as a stand-alone village this year, captivated visiting judges claiming a 'best newcomer' award and a gold medal for 'large village', which can only mean bigger things to come for 2022. There were also awards for delightful displays and high levels of maintenance at Denehurst Park, taking a silver gilt award in the 'large park' category. Kirkholt also took a silver gilt in the 'urban community' award, and Stoney Hill community wildlife area took the best 'biodiversity award'.
Rochdale takes the Best City award
Zen Internet took gold for 'best small industrial park', and local resident Luca Higginson won the 'young bloomer of the year' prize. Cllr Liam O’Rourke, cabinet member for the environment, said: "This was another top-class triumph for our brilliant In Bloom groups and our hard-working teams who all deserve this ultimate recognition. They have literally pulled out all the stops even through recent tough times to still bring this haul of gold medals and additional entries this year." Roy Down, chairman of Rochdale in Bloom, said: "Despite all the setbacks during the recent pandemic, our Rochdale in Bloom volunteers have stepped up once again. Working in partnership with the council’s environmental management service, the volunteers have not only maintained their standards from 2019, but in many cases taken them forward to an even higher standard. New initiatives like the Mosques in Bloom have really put our town on the map. I am so proud of what we have achieved."

BIG ROCHDALE WELCOME FOR LITTLE AMAL
Rochdale town centre was brought to a standstill on Tuesday 2nd November as thousands of people lined the streets to welcome Little Amal – a nine-year-old refugee girl in the form of a 3.5 metre puppet. Rochdale was her penultimate stop on an 8,000 mile journey that has taken her from the Syrian border across Turkey, Greece, Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany and Belgium in search of her mother, stopping at just 65 places on the way. It’s a journey that represents those taken by millions who have been displaced by war or persecution, especially children and her urgent message to the world is ‘don’t forget about us’. Little Amal was met by excited school children at The Pioneers Museum on Toad Lane and presented with 'You are home here' welcome banners before making her way towards the crowds on Yorkshire Street where she was also greeted by community groups who provide help and support to local asylum seekers and refugees at the 'Better Together' building - home of ‘Caring and Sharing.’ There she was presented with a handmade quilt, before being greeted by Littleborough folk group Oakenhoof who led her and the crowds towards The Esplanade and into Rochdale Memorial Gardens. In the gardens she was welcomed by the Mayor, Councillor Aasim Rashid, who presented her with a copy of the heartfelt poem 'Why Rochdale?' written by Middleton resident Ann Robinson. Little Amal then spent over half an hour in the gardens meeting visitors, along with famous Rochdale singer Lisa Stansfield, pupils from nearby primary and secondary schools, students from Rochdale Sixth Form College and Hopwood Hall College. There was music performed by Wardle Academy Junior Brass Band and a group from Petrus joined Skylight Circus Arts entertaining Little Amal with circus skills. The visit concluded with a choir from Little Heaton C of E Primary School singing a traditional lullaby as Little Amal waved goodbye and moved to the next step of her journey, a community event at Kingsway Park High School.

Councillor Rachel Massey, cabinet member for children’s services and education at Rochdale Borough Council said she was very proud: "This was a day we’ll never forget. To welcome Little Amal to my home town has been a heart-warming experience and to see so many people come out to see her says a lot about how welcoming our wonderful communities are. This epic walk has an important role to play in changing the conversation about asylum seekers and refugees and bringing us all together, teaching us about kindness and empathy and showing that we care very much. Most of us can’t begin to imagine what it must be like to flee your home country with nothing more than the clothes on your back and we should continue to do everything we can to support families and children who put themselves at risk to escape war and persecution." The Walk is produced by Good Chance, Stephen Daldry, David Lan and Tracey Seaward in association with Handspring Puppet Company and is produced and presented in Rochdale by Rochdale Borough Council and Your Trust in partnership with Manchester International Festival.
